- Totty started out her career as Totty Whately. She studied textiles at St Martin's School of Art in London from 1979 -1981. She left art school to take a job as a stock hire assistant at theatrical costumiers Bermans and Nathans ( now Angels) working on films such as Ghandi and Lady Chatterley's Lover. Totty turned freelance as a photographic stylist and window display designer during the years 1985-1989. From 1989-1991 she was engaged in recreating historical settings with researched authentic details for public exhibitions including Trowbridge Museum, the Dome Museum Plymouth and the Beethoven exhibition at the South Bank Centre. By way of prop buyer for music videos and runner on various productions she graduated to set decorator. During the 1990s Totty worked as prop buyer and set decorator for commercials, TV and feature films including Orlando ( Oscar nominated for production design), Emma, Fairytale a True Story, Princess Caraboo and Miss Julie to name but a few. In 1997 Totty got married to hill farmer Thomas Lowther and became Totty Lowther. Moving up to a hill farm in Cumbria she formed her own design company while bringing up her own family. Throughout 2013 Totty Lowther worked with Bafta nominated production designer Michael Howells to create a dazzling new look for the Vienna flagship store of a European fashion chain. For 2 decades Totty has built up her own business for decorative furnishings, fine art and wallpaper designs with a showcase in the Cumbrian town of Penrith.
