Like many film fests, Sundance has recently acknowledged that the best of television is also worthy of honoring. But as other fests dip their toes in TV — and focus mostly on major productions already picked up and financed by major networks and studios — Sundance is going back to its independent roots, launching its first-ever Indie Episodics lineup.
As Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro told IndieWire, 2018 was the perfect time to take a major step forward and offer a diverse line-up of independently-produced television.
“It has been a very careful but steady thing that we’ve been slowly growing and kind of exploring over the years, ever since we first premiered ‘Top of the Lake’ [in 2013],” Sextro said. “That was the first episodic we did. We played the entire thing straight through in the Egyptian and we just loved being able to do that. That started to grow our idea of how we can expand the program,...

Blu-ray fans are now well aware that many great movies unavailable in the U.S., can be easily found in Europe. One of the best westerns of the ’70s is this jarringly realistic cavalry vs. Apaches drama from Robert Aldrich and Burt Lancaster, which used the ‘R’ rating to show savage details that Hollywood had once avoided. In this case it works — the genuinely scary movie is also a serious meditation on violent America.

What seemed too raw for 1955 still packs a punch, as Robert Aldrich takes a meat cleaver to the power politics of the old studio system. Monstrous studio head Rod Steiger has just the leverage he needs to blackmail frazzled star Jack Palance into signing the big contract. But will Hollywood corruption destroy them all?

Forgotten amid Robert Aldrich’s more critic-friendly movies is this superb suspense picture, an against-all-odds thriller that pits an old-school pilot against a push-button young engineer with his own kind of male arrogance. Can a dozen oil workers and random passengers ‘invent’ their way out of an almost certain death trap? It’s a late-career triumph for James Stewart, at the head of a sterling ensemble cast. I review a UK disc in the hope of encouraging a new restoration.

How did Kiss Me Deadly come to be restored? The real question should be, how did filmdom lose track of its original ending in the first place? Savant uncovers evidence that may explain when, and why, United Artists mutilated the finish of Robert Aldrich’s apocalyptic film noir.
(Note: The images below with text can be enlarged for reading, just click on them.)
Before home video the final home for Hollywood films was Television. Robert Aldrich’s 1955 Kiss Me Deadly never saw a theatrical reissue, and it dropped out of major TV visibility in 1962. I saw the documentation in United Artists’ legal folder on the film. To secure capital to launch more movies, Robert Aldrich sold all of his ‘Associates and Aldrich’ pictures back to UA after their original releases were concluded. More papers showed Kiss Me Deadly being included in at least two TV syndication packages, and then each time pointedly removed.

You can do whatever you want in the sewers," Animals co-creator Phil Matarese says. "When we're making episodes about rats, you can tell loose, crazy stories. You can tell a really fucked-up story about a rat hiding his boner from a girl, but it's mostly about this kid who just likes a girl a lot."

Ever wonder what goes on inside the mind of a dog? A rat? An insect making a nice snack out of some pubic hair? Those are just some questions HBO’s incoming animated series produced by the Duplass brothers strives to answer, in the crudest way possible. “Animals,” created by Mike Luciano and Phil Matarese, is one of the most comprehensive takes on anthropomorphous characters yet, as it explores rats and their need to procreate, pigeons with sexuality issues and more. Presented over the course of the first season through a series of vignettes taking place in New York, the show.

Five episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
HBO’s Animals wears its twin inspirations on its sleeve – in five episodes, the New York-set series often reflects both the existential ennui of Netflix’s BoJack Horseman and the urban absurdity of that hallowed Internet celebrity known to all as Pizza Rat. With the former’s anthropomorphic setup and the latter’s scrappy, go-for-broke spirit, the series is a lightweight sort of lark, filled with little observations and quirky, dialogue-driven comedy. It’s also one of the strangest shows HBO has aired in some time.
Focusing on a menagerie of inner-city critters suffering from decidedly human afflictions, the series (from Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano, and produced by the Duplass brothers of Togetherness fame) has one, major hook: the idea that, in their daily struggles to survive everything from being poisoned to embarrassing themselves in social settings, the animals of the title...

The next chapter in the ever-expanding success story of Duplass Brothers Productions is set to unfold in February 2016, with its latest project – Animals – set to premiere on HBO. Filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed, The Skeleton Twins) are producing the adult animated comedy for the network, which is already home to their series Togetherness.

What would seem the perfect project for tough-guy director Robert Aldrich still commands a high reputation with some. Ambitious top-dog hobo Lee Marvin squares off against Ernest Borgnine's nearly demonic railroad conductor who routinely murders bums that dare to hitch a ride. The mayhem culminates in a battle on a moving flat car, between Ernie's log chain and Lee's fire ax. But the poetic dialogue and allegorical pretension may be more lethal. Robert Parrish's evocation of Texas and Mexico in the 1880s will be pleasantly familiar -- a testing ground of personal codes and shifting loyalties in a treacherous land. What's an overall deal? It's a sign that Hollywood companies are back fighting for talent. The Duplass brothers have already pacted with Netflix to deliver four indie films. (And after smash "Pitch Perfect 2," Elizabeth Banks is signing an overall producing deal with Warner Bros. TV.)
