“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.
These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
Last year marked the first time in the nine-year history of these guild awards that the eventual Oscar winner was shut out here first. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” lost both period/character races (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to another Oscar contender, “Coming 2 America.” The other two Oscar nominees — “House of Gucci” and “Dune” — were also overlooked by the guild despite three and two bids respectively.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards on the eve of academy members starting to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, seven are vying for these precursor prizes.
“The Batman” and “Elvis” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Amsterdam,” “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Blonde” earned two each; and and “The Whale” has one.
Three films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Crimes of the Future” and “Emancipation” — were snubbed by the guild.
Conversely, several of the Muahs favorites — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Menu,” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

The films up for the 2022 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Coming 2 America,” “Cruella,” “Dune,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and “House of Gucci.” Our current odds show that “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (16/5) is favored to win, followed in order by “Dune” (4/1), “Cruella” (4/1), “Coming 2 America” (9/2), and “House of Gucci” (9/2).
Included among the 15 individual artists in this group are 11 first-time nominees, making this the fifth consecutive lineup with a newcomer rate of over 70%. This subset includes the entire teams from “Coming 2 America” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, as well as one craftsperson from “Dune” (Donald Mowat) and two each from “Cruella” (Nadia Stacey and Julia Vernon) and “House of Gucci” (Frederic Aspiras and Anna Carin Lock).
Farmer and Morris are the third and fourth Black nominees in this category’s history after Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, who won last year for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.
The Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup artist Michèle Burke and the Emmy-winning hair stylist Joy Zapata were feted with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

“It’s my first time at the rodeo,” said “House of Gucci” hairstyle artist Frederic Aspiras hours after the 2021 Oscar nominations were announced. Aspiras, a longtime stylist collaborator of Lady Gaga, was nominated alongside prosthetics designer Göran Lundström and wigmaker and hair stylist AnnaCarin Lock for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
It was the sole nomination that the Ridley Scott movie received – a surprise given that Gaga, who was cited by SAG and BAFTA, was widely predicted to make the cut for Best Actress.
The snub didn’t stop her from reaching out to her friend.
“Talking to Gaga this morning, she was very excited for me and very happy,” Aspiras told TheWrap on a Zoom call, during which he apologized for the puffiness of his eyes from crying. “She just reminded me that this is something that doesn’t happen often in your life, and how amazing it is. She...

In another blow to mass-appealing movies at the Oscars, Academy voters decided to deplete MGM/Uar’s Ridley Scott-directed House of Gucci of all but one nomination, that being for Makeup and Hairstyling.
While adults have been sluggish to return to theaters during the pandemic, House of Gucci broke through, launching over Thanksgiving with a five-day domestic debut of $22M and grossing $53.5M stateside to date and $151.8M global. It has been by far the highest-grossing U.S. drama during the pandemic.

“The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.

Even for a performer known for his physical transformations, Jared Leto reached another level with “House of Gucci.” To play the foolish and ultimately tragic Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s epic drama, Leto underwent hours of makeup and prosthetic work – and the result rendered him so unrecognizable that even costars like Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons weren’t aware they were initially sharing a set with the Oscar-winning actor.
“You have no idea how mind-blowing it is when this guy came in, dressed as Paolo, stood next to me — I was new in Italy — and I thought, ‘Who is this?,’ because he kept calling me ‘Papa!’” Pacino said last year. “Somebody, a sensitive person in the area, said, ‘Al, it’s Jared.’ I swear to you, I bowed to the floor. I remember, I said, ‘You are an inspiration. I can go on now.’”

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. For MGM/United Artists’ House of Gucci, Jared Leto plays Paolo Gucci, the middle-aged, overweight and balding cousin of Adam Driver’s Maurizio Gucci. For an actor who has grown accustomed to transformative work in films like 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club (which earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor) and this year’s The Little Things, one shouldn’t be surprised if Leto’s presence in the film’s cast goes unnoticed until the final credits roll.

Tis the Oscar season of expensive movie wigs. Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana wigs in “Spencer” added $12,000 to the budget, and now “House of Gucci” hairstylist Frederic Aspiras has revealed that Lady Gaga wore $10,000 custom wigs as Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s latest movie. Not only that, but Gaga had over 55 different hairstyles depicted in the film. Ten were custom wigs.
“For my job, it was about being able to use hair as a tool for the actress to really delve into the mind of this person, who she was portraying,” Aspiras recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “So I had to be as authentic as possible by using exact techniques of a 1970s hairdresser — wet set rolls, backcombing, French lacing, spiral perms. I wanted the texture. I wanted the vibe. I wanted the way it moved. Exactly the way it felt. Because it needed to transport you to that time.

From the moment the “House of Gucci” trailer was released, Jared Leto’s transformation from svelte, long-haired actor to pudgy, balding fashion designer Paolo Gucci has been the talk of the film world.
Leto’s Paolo is the family black sheep — a dreamer with a vision that deviates from the fashion house’s tasteful colors and designs. Hours of makeup each day went into Leto’s look for the Ridley Scott movie, which hits theaters Nov. 24. The concept began with prosthetics designer Göran Lundström, who worked off a 3D scan without having met the actor. “I didn’t know his hair color, his hairline and skin tone,” explains Lundström, who had just three weeks to prepare.
Instead, Lundström relied on pictures and videos of Leto: “He had so much hair — thick hair and a low hairline.” The designer started piecing together a puzzle that included a three-piece bald cap that...

If you thought “Borat” (2006) started a frenzy of pop culture and consumers quoting lines for years, wait until we navigate the next couple months with Lady Gaga’s take on famed murderess Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s campy “House of Gucci” — which cement Mother Monster herself as one of the leading contenders for the best actress prize.
Gaga checks so many of the boxes of previous Oscar winners for best actress: She’s a beloved pop icon, taking a role that has her playing a sexy, batshit crazy fame and money-seeker. You can just imagine the old-timers saying to each other over cigars, “She’s just like my first wife…”
At 35, Gaga has already won an Oscar for original song for “Shallow” from Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” (2018), for which she was also nominated for best actress. She lost the acting prize to Olivia Colman (“The Favourite...

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

This Oscar season Best Makeup and Hairstyling was all about dramatic transformations, making Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Christian Bale (“Vice”), and Tilda Swinton (“Suspiria”) unrecognizable as Freddie Mercury, Dick Cheney, and an 85-year-old male psychotherapist and horrifying witch.
Likewise, Eva Melander was made unrecognizable as a troll in the fantastical “Border,” Sweden’s Best Foreign Language entry. And the sprawling cast of Marvel’s “Black Panther” undergo dramatic transformations to become the citizens of Wakanda.
Transforming Malek into Mercury for “Bohemian Rhapsody” required reverse aging on the part of makeup and hair designer Jan Sewell. That’s because the climactic Live Aid concert was shot first. The task required an assortment of wigs, eye makeup, and artificial nose to compensate for Malek’s smaller eyes.
But the biggest challenge was re-creating Mercury’s legendary teeth because of his overbite. Sewell had three sets made to find the right fit for Malek.

With Little Money & Even Less Time, ‘Border’ Makeup Designers Transform European Talents Into Trolls
Called upon to design makeup for Ali Abbasi’s Border—a singularly dark and clever fantasy, which won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard prize and has been selected as Sweden’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film—Göran Lundström would do some of the most transformative work he’d ever done, turning two European talents into trolls.
Demonstrating the highest degree of artistic commitment, Eva Melander put on weight and lost herself inside of many prosthetic pieces to become Tina, a customs officer who can smell fear. Developing an attraction to a mysterious traveler (Eero Milonoff’s Vore), Tina helps the police come to a series of disturbing discoveries, questioning her own identity, and life as she knows it, along the way.
Known for his work on Beauty and the Beast, Cloud Atlas, the Harry Potter series and more, Lundström was well acquainted with the challenges that come with film production in his home country.
