Dog movies almost always want to make you cry. The ones that just want to make you smile are few and far between. That’s usually the case with pet centric flicks, which is good for emotion, but sometimes rough for animal lovers like yours truly. It’s nice on occasion to not go into a film with a canine companion and have to fret about an impending death. Luckily, one look at Patrick, the new dog centric comedy, and your heart will melt without ever reducing you to tears. It’s far from perfect, but it’s more than cute enough to be worthy of a recommendation. The movie is a comedy about how a dog ends up leading a young woman to happiness. At the beginning, Sarah Francis (Beattie Edmondson) has a life that could charitably be called an absolute mess. After the death of her grandmother, for...

"Don't give up on him too easily. He's quite a cute little fellow, isn't he?" A new official trailer has debuted for a fun indie comedy titled Patrick, about a spoiled pug named Patrick who gets bequeathed to a young woman who is having some typical troubles in her life. As expected, the challenging pup provides some good laughs and plenty of pain, but he also helps her get back on track - with falling in love. Aw, how romantic, right? Beattie Edmondson stars as Sarah, and the cast includes Ed Skrein, Emilia Jones, Jennifer Saunders, Meera Syal, Gemma Jones, Emily Atack, Cherie Lunghi, and Peter Davison. This looks even worse than Dog Days, and that's a shame since lovable dog movies should be better than this. Oh well. Here's the newest official trailer (+ poster) for Mandie Fletcher's Patrick, direct from YouTube: Sarah (Beattie Edmondson) is a young...

Numerous actors have occupied the role of Sherlock Holmes over the decades, some more suited to the shoes of author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective than others. One of the finest portrayals is that by Ian Richardson. Yet, sadly, his is also one that is often overlooked, not leastways because he played the character just twice (in a pair of 1983 films made for television), but also because his light was to be quickly eclipsed a year later by the arrival on TV screens of Jeremy Brett, whose interpretation of Holmes is considered by many to be the definitive one.
Sy Weintraub – who produced several Tarzan movies throughout the 60s and was executive producer on the popular long-running Ron Ely TV series –teamed up with Otto Plaschkes (whose producer credits include Georgie Girl and The Holcroft Covenant) with the intention of making several Holmes adventures headlining Richardson.

This week's Wizards Vs Aliens is more than a little heart-breaking, thanks to a couple of stellar performances from its young cast...
This review contains spoilers.
3.3 & 3.4 The Quantum Effect
So farewell then, Benny Sherwood.
At the series launch event in October, executive producer Phil Ford promised that there would be some shocks this series, and they don’t come much bigger than the departure of one of the series’ two lead actors.
Benny has always been Wizards Vs Aliens’ genius-in-residence, and so it makes sense that sooner or later MIT would decide to snatch him away from King’s Park High to join their ‘Gifted Young People’ programme. Of course, before he’s able to head off to America he and Tom have to deal with an old enemy and a fiendish plot to take over the world…
In some ways, The Quantum Effect feels like quite a low-key story...

BBC The Crimson Field
2014 marks the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. The BBC have produced a whole array of dramas and documentaries to mark the occasion and the newest of those shows debuted tonight. The Crimson Field tells the tale of a group of doctors and nurses — both professionals and volunteers — manning a field hospital in the early days of the war.
The episode began when three young volunteer nurses arrived in France. There was the girl who tried too hard, the flighty one and the introverted girl. They soon encountered the stern Matron (Hermione Norris) who was less than impressed with their bedside manner. You could have been forgiven for thinking you were watching Jenny, Trixie and Chummy arriving at Nonnatus House were it not for the fact that the patients they were attending to were dressed in military fatigues and housed in tents. Even...

Brendan Coyle has revealed that the second series of Sky1 comedy drama Starlings will have a much "darker" tone.
The actor, who stars alongside Lesley Sharp in the series, said that the moments of "poignancy and conflict" had been the most successful in the first series.
"Series one started with a much lighter and more comedic tone. It had a more gentle tone than series two. But the writers noticed across the course of the series, the moments of poignancy and conflict were what the audience invested in," said Coyle.
"The boys are still very good at the gags and the slapstick and they know their comedy history very well, but they were more encouraged in series two to push the boat out with more drama.
"The characters are growing up and there's a huge conflict and trauma that happens in the marriage between Terry and Jan. We've also changed the way it's shot,...

For four seasons, British import "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" has shown off the glamorous side of high class prostitution, including lots of money, clothes and sex.
But as the series approached its long-planned end-date, it was clear that Hannah/Belle (Billie Piper) could not actually have it all. So they chose the finale as the first time to show how sad of a life it can really be.
Despite promising he could handle it, Ben (Iddo Goldberg) proved no different from the men who came before him. He gave Hannah the ultimatum of choosing between profession and being with him.
She spends most of the last episode considering the different paths. Clips from past encounters, a particularly eccentric party -- complete with a Scary Spice cameo -- for the newly sprung Stephanie (Cherie Lunghi) and the persistent cop Harry (Paul Nicholls) all seem to push her in different directions,...

After three years of steamy romps, big secrets and heavy questions, Showtime's 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl' is about to hang up the lingerie forever.
Based on the anonymous autobiography of escort Belle de Jour, 'Secret Diary' has traced the trials, tribulations and, yes, titillation of high-end call-girl Hannah Baxter's (aka Belle) life in London. What has kept the series from crossing the line from guilty pleasure to soft porn has been, among other things, its balance between Hannah, lovely girl-next-door by day, and her alter-ego Belle, leading lady of the night. As the titular star, Billie Piper has ushered Belle over countless hurdles, from revealing her profession to her best friend, Ben (Iddo Goldberg), to falling for her editor, Duncan (James D'Arcy).

In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. Easy Rider (1969) is arguably regarded as the seminal ‘60s picture, about two hippie drug dealers (director Dennis Hopper...

It's official. Secret Diary of a Call Girl will return for a fourth season on Showtime. That will be the end of the TV show but the story could continue in another form.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl follows Hannah Baxter (Billie Piper), an independent and witty London graduate who secretly works as a high-class escort. Using the name of "Belle," she's always loved the single life, claiming she doesn’t need relationships because she gets what she needs from her work. Other actors in the series include Iddo Goldberg, Joanna Bobin, Cherie Lunghi, Callum Blue, James D’Arcy, Ashley Madekwe, Nadia Cameron-Blakey, Ace Bhatti, Toyah Willcox, and Stuart Organ.
The series is produced in the UK and debuted there on ITV2 back in 2007. Showtime considered producing an American version of the series but ultimately decided to purchase and air the UK series instead.

My father, Ian Warren, who has died aged 96, enjoyed the fine things in life: fast cars, dashing clothes, good food, fine wine and entertaining friends. He also loved music and rugby. He was one of the earliest jazz fans in Britain, had his own band while still a schoolboy (he played the saxophone and clarinet) and jammed with many of the big names of the day at his parents' house in Kensington, west London.
He befriended Duke Ellington and his band, and introduced himself to Louis Armstrong, who offered my father his first – and only – reefer in his dressing room at the Holborn Empire, central London. Later, in the Us, he met George Shearing, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Peggy Lee.
Ian's father was in the army before becoming an Egyptologist, and his mother was a member of the Seligman merchant banking family. Ian was educated at St Paul's school,...

Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil) and Warner Bros are collaborating on an effort to resurrect King Arthur and the knights of the round table. Warner Bros is currently still working on their acquisition of rights for remaking John Boorman’s 1981 film Excalibur and Singer is also not yet been officially secured for the project.
The 1981 movie starred Nigel Terry as Arthur and Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere and featured early performances from Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart and Gabriel Byrne. The movie told the well-known myth, in a gritty and dramatic fashion, of the young man who draws the sword Excalibur from a stone, is mentored by Merlin, establishes Camelot, loses his wife, Guenevere, to his best friend, Lancelot, and engages in the quest for the Holy Grail. — Hr
Currently, it seems Singer is only in talks to produce the film, however that’s not to say he wouldn’t ultimately direct.

Director Bryan Singer, who recently signed on to direct a new Battlestar Galactica, and Warner Bros. are in the process of developing a remake of the 1981 adventure-fantasy film Excalibur. The project is still in the early stages, with Warners only tying up the remake rights, which it shares with John Boorman, director of the original film. Singer's involvement is right now in a producing capacity, although the project is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for the X2 and Superman Returns helmer. Warner Bros. and Bryan Singer are unsheathing "Excalibur," redoing the 1981 John Boorman movie about King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable.
The project is still in the early stages, with Warners only tying up the remake rights, which it shares with Boorman. Singer's involvement is still in the talking stage and Legendary Pictures may come aboard the project.
If deals are made, Singer would produce with Julie Yorn. Former Warner exec Polly Johnsen (formerly Cohen) would also produce.
Matt Reilly is overseeing for Warners while Erik Olsen, who instigated the project by contacting Boorman, shepherds for the Yorn company.
Alex Garcia, an executive at Legendary and Singer's former partner at Bad Hat, was instrumental in bringing in Singer. If Legendary comes aboard, Garcia would oversee.

"[Creator] Ilene [Chaiken] is going to carry that story along on the Internet, which we think is an interesting way to keep The L Word experience going," he explained. "Then if we decide to go ahead with the spinoff that storyline...
