Exclusive: Jamie Lloyd, director of the history-making reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, reveals that his star Nicole Scherzinger initially “refused to consider” accepting his offer to play Norma Desmond in the show adapted from Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic.
“Nicole was not flattered,” he gasped, speaking to Breaking Baz backstage at the London theatre awards, held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night.
Lloyd says that the show’s “obviously associated with Glenn Close’s iconic performance and therefore people think about Norma Desmond being a much older woman.”
Mmm, that’s unlikely to amuse Glenn Close.
He tells me that Scherzinger, a one-time member of The Pussycat Dolls, called Norma Desmond a “has been” and stormed at Lloyd that she “still looks good under the bright lights.”
Lloyd encouraged her to study Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s book and lyrics and to listen to Lloyd Weber’s music.

Beau should not sleep. Earlier in the day, when he tried to leave his apartment to see his mother, Beau left his door open with the keys still in the lock. When he returned to the door after turning back to retrieve a forgotten item, his keys were gone.
Worse, when Beau asks a man in the hallway about the missing keys, the passerby shouts, “You’re fucked, pal!”
Yes, the above scene does occur in Beau is Afraid, last year’s weirdo epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular disturbed man. But before he made Beau is Afraid as his third feature film, director Ari Aster introduced Billy Mayo as the fearful lead of his short movie, “Beau.”
Although Beau is Afraid benefits from a much larger budget and A-list stars, including Patti LuPone as Beau’s famous mother and Parker Posey as his childhood love, and although it...

The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Ari Aster has assembled a star-packed cast for his next film Eddington, which begins production this week.
Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler are among the performers set to star in the feature that A24 will finance and produce. Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr. are also set to appear in the movie that does not yet have a release date.
Aster is directing Eddington from his own script that centers on a small-town New Mexico sheriff with lofty aspirations. Two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Darius Khondji will lens the title that Aster and Lars Knudsen are producing through their company Square Peg.
A24 has released all three of Aster’s previous feature films, beginning with 2018’s Hereditary and continuing with 2019’s Midsommar and last year’s Beau Is Afraid. This will mark the sixth collaboration between A24 and Square Peg.

Everything’s coming up roses for Glee‘s Kurt Hummel, and no one is more surprised than the actor who portrayed him.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with episode 8 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the nine remaining queens got to participate in the iconic “Snatch Game” with their best celebrity impersonations. The three safe queens this week were Dawn as Meghan McCain, Q as Amelia Earhart, and Plasma as Patti LuPone so they were the first to return to the Werk Room while the tops and bottoms received critiques from the judges.
Despite dreaming about winning “Snatch Game” for a long time, Plasma was “fine” with being safe because she wasn’t as confident with her performance as she thought she’d be. Dawn was equally fine with the decision, understanding that she didn’t stand out in the group. They both gave a “cheers” to Q for her first...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.
The queens still vying for the crown are: Dawn, Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige, Morphine Love Dion, Nymphia Wind,...

Joe Locke, the breakout star of “Heartstopper,” has always had dreams of being on Broadway. Now, at just 20 years old, the British actor has made his Broadway debut as Tobias Ragg in the Tony-nominated revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
After his first performance in late January, he posted photos and video of himself from the show with the caption, “Little Joe would be happy rn.” His “Heartstopper” co-star Kit Connor and music superstar Olivia Rodrigo were among those who messaged their congratulations in the comment section.
“It’s very pinch-me all the time, which is great,” Locke says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “But every night I’m like, ‘What am I doing?’ – in the best way.”
Locke acted in amateur stage productions until he was about 15 in an old Victorian theater in his native Isle of Man. “The...

Being on Broadway wasn’t one of the goals Nicole Scherzinger set when she was listing off her dreams on the Pussycat Dolls single “When I Grow Up,” but the fame-hungry song is a perfect companion to her latest achievement. The hit London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard is heading to Broadway later this year and bringing star Nicole Scherzinger and the rest of the West End principal cast with it.
As Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye revealed before Christmas, Scherzinger will make her Broadway debut reprising her acclaimed performance as Norma Desmond.
Although production dates and venue are still to be announced, producers said today that the musical will star Scherzinger along with her West End castmates Tom Francis (as Joe Gillis), Grace Hodgett-Young (Betty Schaefer) and David Thaxton (Max Von Mayerling).
In addition to preview and opening night dates, additional casting will be announced shortly. A fall 2024 opening has been widely speculated.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)

It was the best of years, it was the worst of years. It was the year of ass-buster running times.
Yes, we are wading into the deep and murky waters of running times! With a cinematic release calendar stocked with two-and-a-half-hour-plus films, the conversation is a hard one to avoid. And as always, the men who make the movies Have Thoughts.
“People say it’s three hours, but come on,” Martin Scorsese said of his “Killers of the Flower Moon.” “You can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours. Also, there are many people who watch theater for three-and-a-half hours. There are real actors on stage, you can’t get up and walk around. You give it that respect, give cinema some respect.”
Let’s unpack this attitude!

Every school has that certain teacher who is a bully, heartless and at times sadistic. Everyone must take their class, but no one finishes the course unscathed. Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) of Alexander Payne’s acclaimed comedy-drama “The Holdovers” is one such instructor. Set in 1970, “The Holdovers” revolves around the by-the-books classics professor teaching at the same New England boarding school he had attended. Hunham is hated by his students, as well as his fellow teachers. And he’s also in hot water, after he failed one of the school’s largest donor’s son in his class. During the Christmas break, he is forced to supervise the “holdovers — -the students who for various reasons must stay on campus. He ends up sharing the holidays with one troubled student (Dominic Sessa) whose mother recently remarried; and the cafeteria administrator (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) grieving her only son’s death in the Vietnam War.

John Waters isn’t afraid to name Ari Aster’s existential dark comedy “Beau Is Afraid” as the best film of 2023.

It’s another big year for Joaquin Phoenix. After winning Best Actor in 2020 for his sick spin on a supervillain in Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” the Academy Award winner appeared as a journalist taking care of his young nephew in Mike Mills’ A24 family drama “C’mon, C’mon.” Then, Phoenix was back at the indie studio with another project: Ari Aster’s third feature, “Beau Is Afraid.” The surreal horror comedy expands on an Aster short from 2011, and stars Phoenix as Beau — “a paranoid man on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother” — alongside Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, and Parker Posey.
“Aster’s delirious third feature clarifies his artistic obsessions even as it expands them into surreal new shapes,” writes IndieWire’s David Ehrlich in his review of the film, hitting theaters April 21. “Once again, ‘Beau Is Afraid’ delivers another morbidly hilarious — and...

Kathryn Hahn is reprising her role of Agatha Harkness in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries on Disney+.
With the Blu-Ray release of WandaVision, Marvel Studios snuck a little preview of the spinoff where Hahn and creators tease the making of the series.
Jac Schaeffer, head writer and executive producer, said she talked to Marvel about developing something else and revealed that everything that she pitched “included a storyline about Agatha.”
“I remember Kevin [Feige] saying to me, ‘We really should think about an actual Agatha show,’ and I was like, ‘Where do I sign for that job?'” Schaeffer recalled.
“The character is so deep and heartfelt and dangerous,” co-executive producer Mary Livanos said. “Continuing the story of Agatha and getting to know her more was immediately an imperative for us as creatives. There would be nothing more delicious to Agatha Harkness than to be in a spinoff.”

The first Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision is getting a collector’s edition Blu-ray release tomorrow (you can order a copy Here) – and apparently a featurette that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the spin-off / follow-up Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (which was formerly known as Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos) is included in the extras! Agatha isn’t expected to start streaming on the Disney+ service until the early fall of 2024 – possibly on September 19, 2024 – so this featurette gets the marketing started quite early.
Some fans have already received their WandaVision Blu-rays and decided to share the featurette on X:

To bring ‘Beau Is Afraid’ to life on the big screen, $35 million were spent. The film has been directed by Ari Aster, who is known for ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Midsommar’.
But, the film flopped at the box office with a global gross just over $10 million and became one of the most divisive releases of the year, reports Variety.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Aster spoke bluntly about the film’s disappointing reception. While he always knew he was making a polarising movie, he is still saddened by the public’s refusal to engage with it.
“The film ends on a theater just very gradually emptying out over the credits, with a very indifferent audience. I wasn’t quite ready for just how prophetic that ending was going to be,” Aster said, quoted by Variety.

Patti LuPone — the Tony-winning, brassy Broadway legend with a penchant for strong opinions — let everyone know exactly how she feels about Abba and their hit “Mamma Mia!” musical in a new joint interview with Nathan Lane on Wednesdsay.
To hear her tell it on “The A24 Podcast,” LuPone has never even seen “Mamma Mia!” on stage or on film out of protest against the Swedish pop supergroup of 1970s fame.
“I’ve never seen ‘Mamma Mia!’ I’ve never seen any of the movies. Every time their music’s on, I turn it off,” LuPone said, detailing her hatred for the band. “I protest them.”
“How can you hate Abba?” Nathan Lane asked, shocked.
Turns out, it has to do with LuPone love of rock ‘n’ roll from the same era. The pop-dance stylings of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad just never sat right with her.

Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.
This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.
In honor of another “season of Sondheim,” take a look back at every single Tony...

Michael Imperioli may be best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti on the TV series The Sopranos, but he has over 100 other screen acting credits and several writing credits (including multiple episodes of The Sopranos). His first writing credit came on 1999 crime drama Summer of Sam (watch it Here), which was directed by Spike Lee… and during an interview for the documentary Ghosts of the Chelsea Hotel (and Other Rock & Roll Stories), Imperioli revealed that he visited a witch and used otherworldly means in an effort to get Summer of Sam into production!
Scripted by Imperioli, Lee, and Victor Colicchio, Summer of Sam has the following synopsis: During the summer of 1977, a killer known as the Son of Sam keeps all of New York City on edge with a series of brutal murders. The philandering Vinny unwittingly almost becomes a victim of the psychopath, and soon he and numerous people in his orbit — including his wife,...

When JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray wrote his review of Hereditary and Midsommar writer/director Ari Aster‘s latest film Beau Is Afraid (you can read the review Here), he struggled to figure out which genre label best described it. He wrote, “While Aster is known for his horror films, this isn’t so easy to classify. It has horror elements and striking scenes of graphic violence, but it’s also blackly comedic. Yes, in some ways, you might call this a comedy, albeit not the ‘haha’ type. It’s also a Freudian psychodrama.” But as far as singer/songwriters Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers are concerned, Beau Is Afraid was a terrifying horror film, as they both talked about being scared by it during a conversation published by Interview Magazine.
Beau Is Afraid follows the mild-mannered but paranoia-ridden Beau as he embarks on a surreal odyssey to get home...

More changes are on the horizon for Disney+'s slate of series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Agatha Harkness spinoff of WandaVision has been postponed to late 2024.
The series, which wrapped production earlier this year, finds Kathryn Hahn reprising the role she played on WandaVision Season 1.
In addition to the delay, the series has also been given a new title... Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
The series has also been called Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Agatha: House of Harkness.
Hopefully, the third time's the charm, and this title sticks.
It is unfortunate that we'll be waiting much longer than planned for the series, but there's a good chance the delay is in response to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Agatha: Darkhold Diaries also stars Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Sasheer Zamata (SNL), Joe Locke (Heartstopper), Patti LuPone (American Horror Story), Emma Caulfield Ford,...
