Over a single opening weekend, composer Pinar Toprak smashed all previous box-office records for women composers in film. She scored “Captain Marvel,” which made $153 million domestically.
Until now, the top-grossing films by women composers were Rachel Portman’s “The Vow,” which made $125 million domestic in 2012, and Deborah Lurie’s “Dear John,” $80 million back in 2010 — and those sums were for the theatrical lifetime of the films, not just a weekend.
The lack of work for female composers has been a frequent topic of conversation in film-music circles since the 2014 formation of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, which now boasts more than 400 members.
According to the latest “Celluloid Ceiling” statistics from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, just 6 percent of the 250 top-grossing films of 2018 had scores by women — but that number was double the 3 percent found in the list of 2017 films.

Clinton Moisey (Fran Kranz), the man-child in Murder of a Cat, calls his sleuthing alter ego Doghouse Reilly, after Philip Marlowe's jokey alias in The Big Sleep. This choice sums up the tone of Christian Magalhaes and Bob Snow's screenplay (on the 2010 Black List), which sprinkles hard-boiled detective jargon onto a comic mystery that mostly reveals Clinton's obliviousness to the world outside his mother's basement. Director Gillian Greene's debut feature plays up these elements with Deborah Lurie's full-throttle film noir score, but she never gets heavy-handed, even when things take a dangerous turn. The death of his beloved Mouser (played by a cat named Bogart) triggers Clinton to leave his comfort zone and begin investigating, albeit in a bathrobe instead of a tre...

The first ever film composer documentary Chasing Notes will debut film on September 6th at the United Film Festival (7Pm, Los Feliz 3 Cinemas, 1822 N. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA). After the screening of the film there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers and some of the composers featured in the documentary. Though music is the focal point in Chasing Notes, the overarching motif is the chase we all embark on to make our dreams a reality. By seeing a year-in-the life of emerging composer, Jaymee Carpenter (who also scored the film), we get to witness an inspiring message come to life through his resilience and artistry. Jaymee interviews many of today’s top working film and television composers, including Nathan Barr (True Blood), Marco Beltrami (Snowpiercer), Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek), John Ottman (X-men Days Of Future Past), Christopher Young (The Rum Diary), Christophe Beck (Frozen), Theodore Shapiro (The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty...

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

The Dear John soundtrack. Imagine, if you will, that musical quality is a beachside stretch of highway, bathed in California sun, with a big white line straight down the middle. One side of the road is the side of good tunes, and the other is the side of gloopy monotonous bilge. The Dear John soundtrack swerves from one side to the other and back like an outtake from Death Proof.
Dear John is adapted from a novel by the author of The Notebook and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, whose previous work includes Chocolat and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (his earlier Danish film My Life As A Dog is probably his best work), and it’s an old fashioned weepy romance from the Mills-and-Boon-with-pretentions end of the scale, so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack consists of ten sentimental love songs. What is surprising is just how alternately terrible/quite good the songs are.

When it comes right down to the bare essentials, the nitty-gritty facts of what makes a movie work for an audience on the most basic level, it always boils down to emotions. Good horror movies scare us, good comedies make us laugh, some movies make us feel good, some make us sad – whatever the emotion is, if the audience truly experiences that emotion through the film, that film has succeeded.
Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom is not my favorite filmmaker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy his movies. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, I am sure his career as a Hollywood director will. Hallstrom is known particularly for his often emotional, somewhat sentimentally-driven films, usually adapted from popular books, such as Cider House Rules, Chocolat, and What’S Eating Gilbert Grape? Personally, I’ve found his best work to be An Unfinished Life.

A song from "Dear John" soundtrack has been made available for listening pleasure as E! Online has just premiered acoustic ballad called "Little House". Described to be a wistful love song, it is penned and performed by leading actress Amanda Seyfried.
"Little House" isn't the first song the 24-year-old actress sang for a feature film. Back in 2008, the "Big Love" actress showed off her singing ability in "Mamma Mia!".For the particular comedy musical, she covered such Abba's songs as "I Have A Dream", "Lay All Your Love on Me" and "Thank You for the Music".

9 is the Tim Burton-produced feature version of the Oscar-nominated short film. It tells the story of an apocalyptic future where burlap sack dolls hold the last essence of humanity and must stay ahead of giant mechanical creatures seeking to destroy them. The 9 movie soundtrack is credited to Danny Elfman and Deborah Lurie, but while Elfman created the themes (see ‘Burial’ and ‘Winged Beast’) it’s young composer Lurie who’s responsible for everything else. 9 is her chance to shine, after ten years behind the scenes providing additional music for the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Wanted, heading up smaller films, and orchestrating /arranging for composing giants John Ottman, Mark Snow and Elfman.
The 9 soundtrack is primarily an action score, and Lurie brings the large-scale orchestral sound of Spider-Man and Wanted to an animated movie, somewhere it’s not typically found. ‘Winged Beast’ and ‘Slaying the Beast’ in particular are epic battle themes,...
