Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. The 1972 film remained blacklisted in the UK, where it was banned for nearly 30 years (finally seeing an uncut release in 2008). In 2006 Rogue Pictures made the shock announcement that Craven had agreed to produce a remake of his film. At the time, many people, myself included, were worried that any remake would have to be watered down for modern audiences – especially when the majority of horror remakes at the time were being released as PG-13. Going off to a secluded location always leads to disaster. Characters swap the bright lights of the city for a respite far removed from civilization, unaware that danger lurks in the woods. Toss in a tortured relationship, and it’s the perfect storm. In celebration of Pride Month, let’s take a closer look at two such films, Icelandic horror/thriller Rift and Canadian psychological terror What Keeps You Alive. Both films depict the maddening descent into chaos, each detailing how a relationship meets a bloody, grisly end. Along the way, you’re whipped into an emotional frenzy.
In director Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen’s Rift, Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson) and Einar (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) have split, yet find themselves still emotionally attached and unable to move on. We first meet them months after the breakup when they both attend the same party. Out on the balcony, Gunnar and Einar nurse drinks and try to reconnect.

Emma Stone is known for her fiery red hair, but did you know that the Academy Award-winning actress is actually a natural blonde? Stone began her career with her natural hair but has been best recognized for her red mane since the early 2000s. The actress dyed her hair for the first time to snag the role of Jules in "Superbad," the blockbuster comedy that launched her legacy.
"Superbad" is a hilarious cultural staple about two boys, played by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, who want to lose their virginity before heading off to college. When their classmate Jules throws a party on one of the final days of senior year, the boys think it may be their last chance to get laid. Emma Stone’s favorite place for sushi in Los Angeles is a no-frills spot in a Sunset Boulevard strip mall, tucked alongside a laser hair-removal clinic and a FedEx store. It’s here, having barely taken a seat, that she starts telling me about her hiatal hernia. “I can’t have spicy foods,” Stone says. The issue, it turns out, is that part of her stomach protrudes “into my esophagus,” which sounds gnarly but is actually pretty manageable, increased chances of acid reflux notwithstanding. “I was born with it,” Stone notes cheerfully.

Brie Larson is undoubtedly one of the biggest actresses in the industry right now. Back at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, she debuted her directorial debut in Unicorn Store, a quirky tale that mixed comedy and drama in equal measure. Since then, the movie has been in limbo, ultimately getting picked up by Netflix in a larger overall deal with Larson. Over the weekend, the flick hit the streaming service, offering the masses another opportunity to see Larson in new material, hot on the heels of the uber success of Captain Marvel. Though nothing to rave about, this debut is a confident and charming one, proving that there’s little Larson can’t do. The film is a dramedy about a potential influx of happiness into a woman’s life. Kit (Larson) has a strong artistic streak, but it’s not one easily understood. When art school doesn’t work out,...

"I'm building a home worthy of a unicorn." Netflix has debuted a trailer for indie comedy Unicorn Store, the feature directorial debut of actress Brie Larson (aka Captain Marvel). This originally premiered back in 2017 at the Toronto Film Festival, before Larson rocked the screen as Captain Marvel, and also stopped by the Edinburgh Film Festival last year. It received dismal reviews and was buried pretty quickly. Netflix is finally giving the film a release this April, if anyone is still curious. Larson's Unicorn Store also stars Brie Larson as a woman named Kit who receives a mysterious invitation that would fulfill her childhood dreams of having a unicorn. Described as a "quirky and offbeat story that's delivered with real charm and affection." The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, Joan Cusack, Martha MacIsaac, Karan Soni, Ryan Hansen, Annaleigh Ashford, Hamish Linklater, & Mamoudou Athie. Quirky but fun. Here's the first...

In the age of Tinder and Bumble, finding new love can be as simple as a single swipe. But sometimes the prospects of meeting a total stranger can lead down some dark paths only visible with time. That’s the central theme throughout “What Keeps You Alive,” a smart and timely thriller from director Colin Minihan.
The filmmaker reimagines old horror tropes — particularly one half of a couple turning on the another in a remote location — through a topical lens. “What Keeps You Alive” is a chilling look at the unraveling of a relationship, and what happens when inner demons come bubbling to the surface to turn betrayal into bloodshed, bolstered by superb performances and some truly shocking twists.

"I'm done playing around... I know these woods..." IFC Films has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled What Keeps You Alive, which premiered at both the SXSW and Fantasia festivals this year. The film is about a female married couple who head to a cabin in the mountains near a lake to celebrate their one-year anniversary. From the moment they arrive, something changes in Jules' normally loving wife, as Jackie (if that even is her real name?) begins to reveal a previously unknown dark side. Ooh. Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen star, along with Martha MacIsaac and Joey Klein. "Defying expectations at every turn," the film is described as "a nerve-twisting cat and mouse thriller built around a shattering tale of heartbreak and betrayal." This looks totally nuts and thrilling as all hell. Enjoy. Here's the red band trailer (+ poster) for Colin Minihan's What Keeps You Alive,...

This year’s SXSW Film Festival kept this writer plenty busy, with a ton of great genre movies that were part of their Midnighters programming slate, and in many cases, there were even some that screened outside the genre-friendly section. Here are my thoughts on a terror-filled trinity of films that I had the opportunity to check out while in Austin over the last week: Colin Minihan’s surprising psychological thriller What Keeps You Alive, the newly revealed sequel Unfriended: Dark Web, and Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s Ghost Stories.
What Keeps You Alive: Last year, Colin Minihan really impressed me with his unusual zombie effort, It Stains the Sands Red, and less than 12 months later, he left my proverbial jaw on the floor with What Keeps You Alive, a shocking and intimately crafted thriller that effectively proves you can never really know everything about the people you love.

What Keeps You Alive is the latest horror film from director Colin Minihan (It Stains the Sands Red, 2017). Minihan has re-teamed with actress Brittany Allen to bring horror fans a mysterious tale of a relationship gone sour. What Keeps You Alive also stars: Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) and Martha MacIsaac. A teaser trailer has just been released for the film; it can be found here. As well, What Keeps You Alive is slated to have its World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, in Austin, Texas. The teaser pieces together a number of scenes. There is a boat race, a bit of hunting and a dinner party. Later, a character performs some illicit surgery on another. Anesthetic might have been nice. And, everything ends with bloodspray. Or, is that red wine? The World Premiere begins this week. On March 10th, What Keeps You Alive will show as part of SXSW's Midnighters program.

Sometimes, a movie just hits at the right time. Battle of the Sexes, initially just a baity biopic of Billie Jean King and the moment where he path crossed with Bobby Riggs, is now about so much more. Obviously, it’s a comedic sports tale as well, but it’s also in many ways a re litigation of the 2016 Presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Apolitical audiences will enjoy things besides that, but if that’s still on your mind, you’ll be incredibly moved by this one. This week, Battle of the Sexes hits theaters and serves up (no pun intended) a real good time at the movies. The film is a look at a pivotal moment in the fight for equality between the genders. In 1973, ex-champ and hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was looking to get back in the spotlight, so he challenged women’s World...

(Aotn) Fox Searchlight have released the official poster and trailer for ‘Battle of the Sexes‘. The comedy-drama, which stars Emma Stone and Steve Carrell, loosely follows the real life events of the tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973, which was dubbed “Battle of the Sexes”. The project was announced back in 2015 with Stone and Carrell attached as the leads. After Stone had some apparent scheduling conflicts, Brie Larson was in talks for a short period of time to play King, before Stone was once again confirmed to star in the film.
The film was directed by Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton, and was written by Simon Beaufoy. The project was produced by Christian Colson, Danny Boyle, Robert Graf. In addition to Carrell and Stone, the stellar cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell, Natalie Morales, Jessica Mcnamee, Fred Armisen, Lewis Pullman,...

Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson has long been eager to get behind the camera — she’s already helmed a pair of short films, including the Sundance award-winning “The Arm,” which she made alongside Jessie Ennis and Sarah Ramos — and her feature directorial debut, “Unicorn Store,” is reportedly set to bow sometime later this year. And now the film has snagged the backing of a brand new production shingle, one that sounds very much in line with Larson’s own outspoken and equality-driven attitude.
Long-time producer Lynette Howell Taylor has now launched a new production banner called 51 Entertainment, with a focus on filmmaker-driven content, and “Unicorn Store” is set up as its first feature. Larson directed the film from Samantha McIntyre’s script, and she also stars in the feature alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, Joan Cusack, and Martha MacIsaac. The film also boasts a crew that was mostly made up of female professionals.

"There's not a single thing I don't hate about Bobby Riggs." Fox Searchlight UK has revealed a new trailer for the indie sports comedy Battle of the Sexes, from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks. Set in the 1970s, the comedy profiles the true story of a wacky tennis match between Emma Stone as tennis champ Billie Jean King, and Steve Carell as chauvinist Bobby Riggs. The match earned attention as a true "battle of the sexes", but there seems to be more going on than just tennis. The full cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Morales, Alan Cumming, Eric Christian Olsen, Sarah Silverman, and Martha MacIsaac. Yesterday, Fox Searchlight began the process of creating excitement for one of their big Oscar hopefuls this year. They did that by dropping the first Trailer for Battle of the Sexes, a pseudo biopic that also could be the rare recent sports related movie to score with the Academy. Done properly, the story contained here is big time awards bait. That all remains to be seen, obviously, but the possibilities here are certainly strong. The Trailer pretty much suggests as much too. You’ll be able to see it at the end of this article, as per the usual, but first…a bit of analysis! The film is a look at the legendary tennis match between champions Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). King was the current number one player in the world in 1973, while Riggs was a former champ and basically a side show act at the time.

Emma Stone's favorite place for sushi in Los Angeles is a no-frills spot in a Sunset Boulevard strip mall, tucked alongside a laser hair-removal clinic and a FedEx store. It's here, having barely taken a seat, that she starts telling me about her hiatal hernia. "I can't have spicy foods," Stone says. The issue, it turns out, is that part of her stomach protrudes "into my esophagus," which sounds gnarly but is actually pretty manageable, increased chances of acid reflux notwithstanding. "I was born with it," Stone notes cheerfully.

The Pinkertons will air on Drama, UKTV has announced.
The crime drama becomes the first original and exclusive Us acquisition for the channel, and is premiering later this year.
The Pinkertons stars Angus Macfadyen as Allan Pinkerton, the founder of Pinkerton's National Detective Agency.
Together with his son William (Jacob Blair) and America's first female detective Kate Warne (Martha MacIsaac), they solve crimes throughout the Wild West of the 1860s.
Drama general manager Adrian Wills said: "2014 was a huge success for Drama, and it is the right time to broaden the channel's content lineup by premiering brilliant Us dramas to our viewers first, ahead of other UK broadcasters.
"The Pinkertons will complement the channel's existing slate of dramas, and I'm sure viewers will enjoy this compelling series."
The Pinkertons premiered in the Us late last year. The first season will comprise of 22 episodes.

Dead Before Dawn (2012)
Directed by: April Mullen
Written by: Tim Doiron
Cast: Devon Bostick (Casper Galloway), Martha MacIsaac (Charlotte Baker), Christopher Lloyd (Horace Galloway), Brittany Allen (Lucy Winthrop), Brandon Jay McLaren (Dazzle Darlington), Kyle Schmid (Patrick Bishop), Tim Doiron (Seth Munday)
Curiosity got the best of me for this one. After seeing it on the shelves in DVD form, I noticed that it was streaming on Netflix. “Awesome!” I thought. I can check it out without further monetary commitment, and if I like it, I can buy the DVD copy. I guess it’s kind of like calling it back after a hook up, except no one gets their feelings hurt. Even better. What I really noticed about “Dead Before Dawn” was Devon Bostick. He’s a really familiar face at my house as the completely douchy older brother in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” films.

There's just one term season for 1600 Penn. NBC has cancelled the Thursday night sitcom after one season and 13 episodes.
1600 Penn follows the dysfunctional Gilchrist family as they adapt to life in the White House. When the public voted Standrich Gilchrist (Bill Pullman) into office, they likely had no idea that they were getting his goofy son "Skip" (Josh Gad) as part of the deal. The show also features Jenna Elfman, Martha MacIsaac, Andre Holland, Amara Miller, and Benjamin Stockham.
The sitcom previewed on December 17th to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.88 million viewers. For NBC, those are very good ratings.
Unfortunately, 1600 Penn couldn't hold onto those numbers. The second episode drew a 1.6 rating and 3.86 million on January 10th. A week later, the ratings fell to a 1.2 in the demo and...

On the season finale of "1600 Penn," due to a wedding license mix-up, it turns out President Gilchrist (Bill Pullman) and Emily (Jenna Elfman) aren't married. You know what that means in sitcom land -- quickie White House wedding!
But it can't be any old wedding. Skip (Josh Gad) decides to flex the golden pipes on Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," which it turns out is Becca's (Martha MacIsaac) birthing song, so it sends her into labor.
The first family rushes to the hospital -- after first tracking down D.B. (Robbie Amell) at the mall -- and Becca and her baby daddy welcome baby boy. Except D.B. is not the baby daddy. It's Marshall (Andre Holland), the White House Press Secretary.

Acting is a craft. Even the greatest of thespians must work long and hard to achieve the right emotions to believably play a part. So just think how tough it must be for Josh Gad of "1600 Penn."
We're kidding, of course. Gad is great. But even he might need some pointers now and then. That's when it's good to have someone like Andre Holland around for extra help. With him, a believable adult baby at a funeral might even be possible. Maybe.
What sorts of scenes are the actors really preparing for?
A date is Skip's goal in the next "1600 Penn" episode, "Game Theory." In this episode, Skip announces that he is going on a big date with Stacey (guest star Susan Park. On tonight's "1600 Penn" (9:30 p.m. Est on NBC), genre icon Bruce Campbell guest stars as President Gilchrist’s (Bill Pullman) brother, Doug. His visit to the White House ignites a long-standing rivalry which threatens their relationship and prompts Emily (Jenna Elfman) to take on the role of peacemaker.
Elsewhere, Becca (Martha MacIsaac) prepares for an interview and Skip (Josh Gad) decides to offer his own special version of the White House tour after witnessing one from an official tour guide (guest star Rory O’Malley).

At just 12 years old, breakout actress Amara Miller has already found success in both television and film. In just a short few years Miller has found herself on the big screen in the critically acclaimed project The Descendants and also starring alongside Josh Gad in the latest NBC series 1600 Penn. Talented in both drama and comedy, it's no wonder that director Alexander Payne immediately picked her out from an audition video to play George Clooney's daughter in the 2001 film.
Now playing Marigold Gilchrist in 1600 Penn, Miller is excited and grateful for the experiences she has had so far. In my latest interview with the up-and-comer, Miller revealed how she got into acting, her favorite moment so far in the industry, and who she would love to work with one day.
How's it been working on 1600 Penn so far?
Amara Miller: It's definitely a lot of fun. Everyone there is really hilarious.

Superbad is a lot of things. It's raunchy, hilarious, and gave audiences worldwide new sayings like "blood brothers" and "McLovin." But even more than that, the 2007 hit starring Michael Cera and Jonah Hill also helped fellow actors Martha MacIsaac and Emma Stone breakout in the film industry. While discussing her new role to me as first daughter on the NBC series 1600 Penn, MacIsaac looked back on her role as Becca and the comedy that instantly became a classic for today's generation.

For the most part, every family is dysfunctional. It's either a weird relative, rivalry between siblings, or in this case, because of a son named Skip [Josh Gad] that heads home after attending college for a bit too long. 1600 Penn is a hilarious new family comedy with one difference--it takes place in the White House. Starring Gad as the lead and co-creator, the clan has its ups and downs, but ultimately pulls off the idea that a story about the first family doesn't necessarily have to do with anything about politics.
