“Moonlighting” was more than a watercooler show. It was an obsession. Episodes were taped and rewatched. And for good reason. There had never been a anything on the small screen like the 1985-89 ABC romantic screwball comedy detective series. The rapid-fire dialogue recalled such Howard Hawks’ classics as 1938’s ‘Bringing Up Baby” and 1940’ “His Girl Friday.” Fourth walls were broken. There was a black-and-white episode and even and wild and crazy take on William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” That was just the tip of the innovations.
Creator and executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron told me in a 2000 L.A. Times interview that ABC didn’t give him total freedom when it came to the episodes: “The truth is no one let me do everything. I just did it. Ignorance is bliss. There were rules and I chose not to listen to anybody. At a certain point, the network said- ‘This is working.

This is why I don’t do interviews,” says Simon Bird. “I regret everything I say.” I’ve just asked the 38-year-old star of The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner about Rishi Sunak. In his 2021 mid-pandemic stand-up special Debrief, Bird suggested that Sunak, then chancellor of the Exchequer, was “personally culpable for gross negligence manslaughter”, branding his Eat Out to Help Out scheme an “act of terrorism”. “There was definitely an element of comic hyperbole there,” he tells me, somewhat pragmatically. “I don’t feel like it’s my place really to get into politics. Although, I mean, the reason you’re bringing it up is because I literally did get into politics... I’ve totally contradicted myself. But how do I feel about him being prime minister? Well, I don’t think I’ll be voting for him. And I’ll probably leave it at that.”

The sitcom "Moonlighting" debuted on ABC on March 3, 1985, and it was unlike any TV show previously seen. It had the quick banter of a 1940s screwball comedy and crazy sexual tension between stars Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd as detective David Addison and former model-turned-detective, Maddy Hayes. "Moonlighting" broke the fourth wall long before "She-Hulk" and "Deadpool" did it on screen, employed a cold open before it was standard, and often showed sets and production staff on camera. The detective agency dramedy series broke with what viewers were used to fairly often, including an episode based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," entitled, "Atomic Shakespeare."
In the episode, Willis appears as Petruchio, a man who marries Katherina, played by Shepherd. If Petruchio can make her a docile wife, he gets her dowry. Look, no one ever said that Shakespeare's sensibilities would work for the 21st century. Still,...

Hal Ashby’s The Landlord, made in 1970, is probably the best movie of the 1970s not to be widely known by younger audiences, and even by some older audiences whose appreciation of the last great era of American moviemaking needs to be expanded beyond go-to classics like The Godfather and Chinatown and Taxi Driver. It’s Ashby’s first directorial effort, after work as assistant editor and chief film editor on The Diary of Anne Frank, The Cincinnati Kid and In the Heat of the Night, and it finds Ashby delighting in the freedom of fashioning experimental rules of editorial and visual expression in the process of translating a script from Bill Gunn (Ganja and Hess), based on Kristin Hunter’s novel, into what stands today as one of the funniest, most honest, cogent and probing explorations of race and American race relations in movie history. We had it on...

Simon Bird, Will McKenzie from the Britcom hit series The Inbetweeners, will make his feature film directorial debut with the adaptation of Joff Winterhart's graphic novel Days of the Bagnold Summer. Variety is reporting that the graphic novel was adapted by Brid's wife Lisa Owens, author of her debut book Not Working. Winterhart’s book, which was shortlisted for the 2012 Costa Award, tells the story of “an idle summer in the lives of a shy 15-year-old heavy metal fan and his librarian mother. It perfectly captures the ennui, tension, pathos and affection of a mother-son relationship,” according to a statement. Bird has one short film to his credit. He directed Ernestine & Kit, a short film about two ladies in their seventies on a road...

Hinterland are set to release the first episode of their long-awaited story mode for The Long Dark in Spring 2016. The original sandbox version of the survival game has been available for PC and Xbox One since September 2014, but news about the story mode has been far from forthcoming during most of that time.
It’s said that this story mode will play out through the perspective of two playable characters: bush pilot Will Mackenzie and doctor Astrid Greenwood. The events of the story will follow these two as they fight for survival in the wintry landscapes, following the mysterious “Flare Event” that has devastated civilization. While the story mode is set to follow almost identical mechanics to the existing sandbox mode, concerned fans can be assured that the ‘permadeath’ feature will be replaced by a checkpoint system to facilitate narrative progress.

Luther star Idris Elba has allegedly expressed interest in appearing in The Inbetweeners Movie 2.
Actor Anthony Head, who played Will McKenzie's father in the TV series and first movie, claims to have heard the news from Elba himself.
"I was at a gig with Idris Elba recently and he says he'll do anything in it," Head told Empire. "He said he'd do a walk-on, so I've got to email them and say: 'Idris Elba wants to be in it'."
The Inbetweeners Movie 2 was officially announced by creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley earlier this month, ending long-running speculation about the project.
The film will shoot later this year with central quartet Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) reuniting for a new big-screen adventure.
Film4 and Channel 4 will co-finance and produce the movie through Bwark Productions.

Have you seen Britain’s most successful comedy of all time? If you haven’t been paying attention to the programming on E4 for the past few years, it might surprise you just what that movie is. The Inbetweeners started off as a sitcom on that channel that ran from 2008 to 2010. It was a high school-based comedy that resonated hugely with audiences, probably because it featured the sorts of characters who people relate to most, but who rarely get represented in stories about the teen years—not the absolute dorks whose lives are made miserable, and certainly not the popular kids who rule their schools, but those in between somewhere who anonymously go about their lives without too many people learning their names. The Inbetweeners Movie is the film in question. It was a 2011 followup to the sitcom, directed by Ben Palmer, that took the four nebbish but sex-obsessed leads from the show, Simon Bird...

If "Superbad" and MTV's "Awkward" had a baby boy, and that boy was dropped on his head during his formative years, that baby would grow up to be MTV's new U.S. remake of UK cult hit "The Inbetweeners." And we mean that as a compliment.
The series premieres Monday, August 20 at 10:30 p.m., chock-full of laugh out loud moments that will take you right back to your high school days. But not necessarily the good days, if you know what we're saying.
Joey Pollari plays Will McKenzie, who transfers to a new school after some problems with bullies at his old one. There, he meets the unlucky in love Simon Cooper (Bubba Lewis), the dimwitted Neil Sutherland (Mark L. Young), and Jay Cartwright (Zack Pearlman), who one television critic at this year's TCA Press Tour described as one of the most despicable characters on television. (He's our favorite.

The young-and-delicious slant of MTV Scripted (a phrase that still doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as you'd like it to) has produced a varied roster of mixed results. You can mark current landmarks Awkward. and Teen Wolf (both of which were given record double-sized third season orders) in front of the short-run mediocres (Hard Times of Rj Berger, Human Giant) and the arguable one-run failures, including the scandalous Skins and hipster I Just Want My Pants Back. But it's still not a guarantee that young comedy The Inbetweeners—an adaption of the same-named British series—will be a hit. What it does have going for it, however, is following a stride that the network's past two hits have hit relatively well: it's pretty goddamn funny.
And furthermore, instead of playing up the typical teenage losers-verses-populars debate, The Inbetweeners focuses on a gang of guys who fall somewhere,...

Seeking to emulate the success of the British television series of the same name, MTV’s new comedy series The Inbetweeners introduces us to a quartet of young men struggling to navigate the trials of high school. For everyone who survived high school, one recalls acutely how thorny, and at times hilarious, the social structure is for those four pivotal years.
In this ribald and rambunctious series, Will McKenzie (Joey Pollari) dares to make the move from private school to public school only to find that making new friends is trickier than he imagined. Quickly taken underwing by a well-meaning trio, Will discovers his new friends are perhaps not the most socially-polished, but they have good intentions and soon Will’s world becomes the epicenter of the wacky adventures of Simon, Jay and Neil, along with the girl who has caught their eye, Carli.

"The Inbetweeners" is one of the most beloved British comedies of the past decade, managing to garner enough international appeal to amass a sizeable cult following in the Us during its three-season run. So naturally, when MTV announced it was planning to adapt the series for American audiences, outrage ensued. (Especially after the "Skins" debacle.)
Luckily, the show has retained much of the charm of its predecessor without wholly retreading its steps. Similar to the way Showtime's "Shameless" utilized plots from the UK version before forging its own path, the Us "Inbetweeners" will use certain stories as springboards before heading in an original direction, usually riffing on the most embarrassing elements of the high school experience in a similar way to MTV's other charming teen comedy, "Awkward."

The Inbetweeners: Watch the First Two Minutes of the Series Premiere
They say that you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family, but new kid at Grove High Will McKenzie (Joey Pollari) didn't get to choose his friends either. In the series premiere of MTV's remake of British comedy The Inbetweeners, Will gets assigned a group of guys to show him around school and they don't exactly give him the warmest reception. Neither does the rest of the student body, though, which isn't the greatest sign for the young man going forward.
The Inbetweeners also stars Bubba Lewis, Zack Pearlman, Mark L. Young, Alex Frnka, and Brett Gelman. The show will follow the journey of the four guys (Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon) as they make the transition to adulthood and try to gain a little popularity in a high school where they're pretty much invisible.

Despite much desire from fans for more, “The Inbetweeners” star James Buckley has warned that we may have seen the last of these characters and that the E4 series is “unlikely to return”.
Reports spread last month that Buckley – who ironically played the compulsive liar Jay Cartwright in the show – hinted that a fourth series was planned and in the offing, which would include a major character’s death. Soon after those quotes appeared in the Daily Mail, the creators of the show vehemently denied that a follow-up to last year’s mega successful film was being worked on and called the reports “total b*llocks”.
Speaking about his alleged previous claims, Buckley recently told NME;

Speaking about his alleged previous claims, Buckley recently told NME;

The Inbetweeners co-creator Iain Morris has denied rumours that the hit show is set to return for a fourth series.
The Daily Star reported yesterday that a new series was in the works and even quoted James Buckley – who plays Jay in the E4 comedy – to say it was happening, allegedly hinting that one of the characters would even be killed off.
“Maybe one of them dies and the other three have to join up for the funeral,” Buckley was quoted as saying during a trip to the States. “But the question is – who are they gonna get rid of?”.
Morris took to Twitter and dismissed the claims outright by replying to a user’s question with”is ‘total b*llocks’ succinct enough? for those that care, the last time james was in the Us was my wedding last year, so the story is either a; v old or b...

The Inbetweeners star Belinda Stewart-Wilson has cast doubt upon a potential fourth series of the show. The actress - who plays the mother of lead character Will McKenzie (Simon Bird) - admitted that another full run of the E4 comedy is unlikely, but confirmed that she would return for any TV specials or a sequel to this summer's movie. "I'm sure I would do it - I've had such a great time working on this I wouldn't be able to resist," she told The Mirror. "But I very much doubt there will be another series. "Perhaps in the future a Christmas special, or some other one-offs might work, but because of where the story has taken the four guys I don't think it could sustain a series again." The 40-year-old added although she is grateful to have received her "big break" in The Inbetweeners, she fears (more)...

The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird has become engaged to his longterm girlfriend. The 27-year-old, who plays Will McKenzie in the E4 comedy, proposed to Lisa Owens during a romantic trip to France. "Simon took Lisa to Paris without any mention of plans to propose, but he had it all worked out," a source told The Sun. "He bought a ring - sticking to traditions and spending a month's wages on the sparkler. "They went for dinner and he asked her to marry him. Lisa immediately said, 'Yes'. They (more)...

A sequel to 'The Inbetweeners Movie' will see the pals reunited at Neil Sutherland's wedding. The first film - based on the TV comedy series - which sees Neil Sutherland and his friends Will McKenzie, Simon Cooper and Jay Cartwright and go to notorious Greek island Malia for a holiday after completing their A-Level exams and get involved in their usual sex and alcohol-fuelled misadventures has been such a success that producers are already planning a second film. A source told the Daily Mirror: ''Initially we said the characters and themes had reached a natural conclusion.

Simon Bird believes that the popularity of The Inbetweeners and the box office success of The Inbetweeners Movie is "a double-edged sword". The 27-year-old comic actor - Will McKenzie in the franchise - said that he is worried his new sitcom Chickens with friend and fellow Inbetweeners cast member Joe Thomas will be judged alongside the secondary school series. Bird told Pa: "It's obviously great, The Inbetweeners has opened a lot of doors for us. "But at the same time it is a double-edged sword because it's obviously going to be judged in relation to The Inbetweeners, which is unfortunate because we want it to (more)...

The Inbetweeners cast have insisted that their movie is a "bigger and better" version of the E4 series. Simon Bird (Will McKenzie), James Buckley (Jay Cartwright) , Blake Harrison (Neil Sutherland) and Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper) have promised viewers that they will be both laughing and crying during the movie. Asked by Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio if the film is like a long episode of the sitcom, Harrison replied: "I think there is more to it than that. "The thing is, when you're doing like a 20-odd minute sitcom, and also with our kind of series, the way we do things, we don't necessarily have an arc throughout the series so every episode kind of stands alone, and with the film obviously you've got 90-odd minutes so you have to put in a lot more of an arc than you would in a 22 minute episode... also there's (more)...

James Buckley has jokingly played down the success of The Inbetweeners. The 23-year-old actor, who played Jay Cartwright in the puerile E4 sitcom, was promoting the upcoming film spinoff alongside co-star Simon Bird on Alan Carr: Chatty Man. Buckley jested: "I think we have rode our luck out. It's just a silly little programme, isn't it? It's a laugh. It's just s**t, isn't it?" The 'Inbetweeners' stars were bullied by British tourists while filming their upcoming movie. Robert Popper isn’t a name many people will recognize, but he’s been involved with some of the better British comedies in recent years; most notably his co-writing of ’70s school education film spoof Look Around You with Peter Serafinowicz, which even led to him working on a few episodes of South Park. Popper returns with his first solo project, Friday Night Dinner, which is another example of a recent trend to have sitcoms take place in a restrictive location. It even shares some conceptual DNA with Simon Amstell’s Grandma’s House, as they both involve young people mixing with their middle-aged Jewish relatives.
Friday Night Dinner concerns the Friday night ritual of twentysomething brothers Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) visiting their Mum (Tamsin Greig) and Dad (Paul Ritter) for Shabbat. Needless to say, their parents are an eccentric couple: Mum’s obsessed with recording the...

For those of you who haven’t seen The Inbetweeners – where have you been? It’s one of Britain's biggest shows, and enormously entertaining, following the lives of four distinctively average sixth form boys attending Rudge Park Comprehensive. Simon Cooper (played by Joe Thomas), Jay Cartwright (James Buckley), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Will McKenzie (Simon Bird) make up the verbally and physically clumsy Inbetweeners; four teenagers who - courtesy of the awkward years ‘inbetween’ childhood and adulthood - continuously suffer the indignity, embarrassment and insecurity of growing up. What makes The Inbetweeners so viewable is the relatable nature in which its protagonists are portrayed – I mean, who doesn't know a Will, Simon, Jay or Neil of their own?
First screened in 2008, The Inbetweeners has quickly become one of the most talked about (and quoted) shows of my generation and for good reason. Will’s awkward upper-class, private schoolboy behaviour...

BBC America's new high- school sitcom, "The Inbetweeners," maps every intricate conception of the teen lad's mind, capturing the nuances of four boys' pursuit of lager, booze and . . . well, that's about it. Not so nuanced, really. But supremely funny. Picture an across-the-pond version of "American Pie" that isn't actually aimed at cretins, or, better yet, call this bright series "Fast Times at Rushmore High." Sixteen-year-old Will McKenzie (Simon Bird) is the bespectacled new twit at a "comprehensive," i.
