Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, who sang and played drums on “Don’t Turn Around,” “Shine” and other hits for the UK reggae band Aswad, died September 2. He was 62.
The band announced his death on its Instagram page but did not provide details. “It is with deepest regret and profound loss that we have to announce the passing of our brother Angus ‘Drummie’ Gaye,” the post reads (see it here). “Drummie was much loved and respected by both family, friends and peers alike. [He] has left us to join our ancestors and leaves a huge void both personally and professionally.”
Gaye and his bandmates Tony Robinson and Brinsley Dan Forde met at Holland Park School in London and released a number of singles that dented the UK chart before scoring big with “Don’t Turn Around” in 1988 (see the video below). The jaunty track penned by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren hit No.

Interview Louisa Mellor Jan 29, 2013
The countdown to Being Human’s fifth series continues, with a chat to the man behind werewolf Tom, Michael Socha…
Contains spoilers for Being Human series five (though we've left out any major revelations).
Though they've already given their interview, Michael Socha (the actor behind Being Human's naive but deadly werewolf Tom) has brought co-stars Damien Molony and Kate Bracken along with him to talk series five. As their characters do in the show, their company seems to bolster and relax him, helping Socha to make the majority of this chat unrepeatable either due to his frequent, punctuating swearing or the raucous laughter he provokes, usually with just a facial expression, every other question. We've salvaged what we could from it, and left out any of the major spoilers.
(Incidentally, you should know that today, Socha is in costume as an employee of Being Human's Barry Hotel,...

Actress Hilary Swank insists she only has herself to blame for the controversy that erupted after she appeared at a birthday party for vilified Chechnyan President Ramzan Kadyrov earlier this year - because she had no idea who he was and couldn't even pronounce his name.
The Oscar winner joined Seal, violinist Vanessa Mae and Jean-Claude Van Damme at the leader's 35th birthday bash in Grozny on 5 October - but she insists she was only there as a representative of a Turkish real estate company and thought she was a part of a peace tribute.
She explains, "I was invited by a Turkish real estate company to go and help be a proponent of peace by celebrating the rebuilding of a war-torn city in Chechnya... I thought, 'Absolutely, yes... I love to travel, I love to meet people...' Then, once there on the side of the stage, someone said, 'It's the President's birthday; could you wish him a happy birthday?'
"I'd never heard of him before and in fact when they said his name I couldn't even say it so I said, 'I'll just say, Mr. President'. So I went out and said, 'Happy Birthday Mr. President after I said my whole speech about it's great to be a proponent of peace and you guys are doing incredible things. Then, when I got back (to America), only then was I made aware of who he was... Now I can say his name. His name is Kadyrov and he's a bad guy."
Swank has already handed over the money she received to attend the party and she has linked with the human rights activists who tried to warn the actress about going to Chechnya and saluting a leader allegedly responsible for the brutality and torture of his own people.
Speaking to U.S. chat show host Jay Leno on Friday, she adds, "Human rights organisations had reached out to warn me before I went but I did not get those warnings, they weren't shared with me... I had never known and I thank the human rights organisations for reaching out... The silver lining is I'm actually working with the Human Rights Watch now."
And she insists there's no excuse for what she did - admitting she should have done her research.
Swanks adds, "Shame on me. I should know where I'm going and I should do better research and I definitely can guarantee I won't go anywhere ever again without doing full research... I actually didn't know that Chechnya was separate from Russia... I had no idea. "...

Actress Hilary Swank has vowed to hand over the money she received to attend the birthday of controversial Chechnyan president Ramzan Kadyrov to charity following increased pressure from angry human rights activists.
Officials at Human Rights Watch have denounced Swank and Jean-Claude Van Damme for partying with Kadyrov in celebration of his 35th birthday on 5 October, amid allegations the leader is responsible for the brutality and torture of his own people.
The Million Dollar Baby star has already apologised for agreeing to attend the party and speaking onstage at the lavish bash in the country's capital city of Grozny, admitting, "If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone."
But her words of sorrow were not enough for Human Rights Watch executives - they responded by stating, "The more important question now is what is Swank going to do with the blood money paid from Kadyrov’s coffers? She sidesteps the issue completely."
The extra pressure has now prompted Swank to rid herself of the party money and a representative for the star tells The Hollywood Reporter that she will be giving away the appearance fee "to various charitable organisations".
Violinist Vanessa Mae and singer Seal have also come under fire for performing at the birthday gig, although the Kiss From A Rose hitmaker is refusing to be drawn into the fuss.
In a defiant post on his Twitter.com blog, he wrote, "By going there, I played Music for the Chechenyan (sic) people. I'm a Musician and would appreciate if you leave me out of your politics."
It is not known what fee Seal was paid to sing at the party but British musician Mae reportedly took home a $500,000 (£312,500) purse for her work.

Talk about backtracking: after the Human Rights Watch publicly criticized Hilary Swank for appearing at the birthday party for notorious Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov, the two-time Oscar winner actress has been doing serious damage control. The October 5th event was the glittering 35th birthday celebration of the Kremilin-supported leader, who has been accused by the organization of militant rule, torture, murder and other "crimes against humanity."
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the Human Rights Watch pointed to other celebrities who had in the past supported controversial political figures before singling out Swank and co-attendees Jean-Claude Van Damme, Seal and violinist Vanessa Mae, who attended the event in exchange for a rumored several hundred thousand dollars.
“We must remember the disgrace Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, Beyoncé and 50 Cent were exposed to after singing for the Gadhafi family and earning millions of dollars for it,” said Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation.

Moscow — Hollywood celebrity Hilary Swank said she "deeply regrets" visiting a concert held on the birthday of the Kremlin-backed Chechen leader, who is accused of torture, abductions and killings by human rights groups.
The two-time Oscar winner said that she was unaware of the disappearances, house torchings and extra-judicial killings reportedly orchestrated by Ramzan Kadyrov in the southern Russian republic.
"I deeply regret attending this event," Swank said in a written message to The Associated Press on Thursday. "If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone."
Swank issued the message after the Human Rights Watch criticized her – along with Belgian actor Jean Claude Van Damme and British violinist Vanessa Mae – for attending a show that, it says, "trivializes the suffering of countless victims of human rights abuses."
Representatives for Van Damme and Mae have not responded to AP's requests for comment.

Hollywood star says she was unaware of accusations of human rights abuses when she attended celebrations on his birthday
The actor Hilary Swank has reportedly said she "deeply regrets" taking part in a lavish concert for the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, following criticism from human rights groups.
The two-time Oscar winner said she was unaware that Kadyrov had been accused of orchestrating brutal extrajudicial killings and abductions.
Swank, who has built a career playing morally minded characters, joined action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, British violinist Vanessa Mae, and singer Seal to fete Chechnya's authoritarian leader on 5 October, his 35th birthday.
Despite building a massive personality cult in the mainly Muslim republic, Kadyrov had banned birthday celebrations and fashioned the concert as a city day party instead. After Swank included birthday congratulations in her gushing speech to the feared ruler, the master of ceremonies asked how she knew it was his birthday.

Actress Hilary Swank deeply regrets attending the birthday celebrations of Chechnya's controversial President Ramzan Kadyrov, insisting she did not have a "full understanding" of the event.
Swank was among guests at the lavish bash in the country's capital Grozny to mark the politician turning 35 last week. Violinist Vanessa Mae performed at the party, and a number of skyscrapers were illuminated as fireworks were simultaneously set off.
However, Swank's attendance infuriated human rights activists, who accuse Kadyrov of brutality and torture against his own people, and they publicly lambasted her for joining in the celebrations.

Human Rights Watch expresses concern as star seen alongside Jean-Claude van Damme at Chechen leader's lavish celebration
Oscar-winning actor Hilary Swank and action star Jean-Claude van Damme have been criticised for attending a lavish party in honour of Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov. Human rights organisations targeted the pair for agreeing to be part of the multimillion-pound event on a floating stage on the river Sunzha in the Chechen capital city, Grozny, last Wednesday.
In 2009, the American organisation Freedom House named Chechnya alongside Burma, North Korea and Chinese Tibet on a list of the most repressive societies in the world.
"Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a litany of horrific human rights abuses," said a statement from Human Rights Watch (Hrw). "It's inappropriate for stars to get paid to party with him. It bolsters his image and legitimises a brutal leader and his regime. And getting paid to be part of such...

Moscow — An international human rights watchdog lambasted an Oscar-winning actress and other Western celebrities on Wednesday for attending a concert held on the birthday of Chechnya's Kremlin-backed leader, who has been accused of grave rights abuses and spending taxpayers' money on his eccentric hobbies.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch said that American actress Hilary Swank, Belgian actor Jean Claude Van Damme and British violinist Vanessa Mae attended the concert in the Chechen capital, Grozny. The Oct. 5 show was held at a police-cordoned stage on Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's 35th birthday.
Human Rights Watch urged the artists to "avoid legitimizing people like" Kadyrov, who has been accused by rights groups of having orchestrated abductions, extrajudicial killings and the enforcement of sharia law in Chechnya, a Russian republic.
"Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a grim record of abuse," the group's Europe and Central Asia director Huge Williamson said in a statement.

Hollywood stars Hilary Swank and Jean-claude Van Damme have come under fire from human rights groups for attending the birthday celebrations of Chechnya's controversial President Ramzan Kadyrov last week.
The politician, who turned 35 on Wednesday, closed off central Grozny, the country's capital, to host a lavish bash, which saw a number of skyscrapers illuminated as fireworks were simultaneously set off.
He invited Oscar-winner Swank and action man Van Damme to watch violinist Vanessa Mae perform as part of his birthday party, and both wished him many happy returns.
However, the stars' attendance has infuriated activists who accuse Kadyrov of acts of brutality and torture against his own people.
A spokesperson for the Human Rights Watch organisation has urged the pair to hand any fee they received for attending the party to charity, saying, "Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a litany of horrific human rights abuses. It's inappropriate for stars to get paid to party with him. It bolsters his image and legitimises a brutal leader and his regime. And getting paid to be part of such a lavish show in Chechnya trivialises the suffering of countless victims of human rights abuses there."
Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation, adds, "Hilary Swank obviously has the right to earn a living entertaining the highest bidder, but this sort of venality should be exposed - especially after claiming she was not going.
"Would she have accepted an invitation to entertain (former Chilean leader Augusto) Pinochet? Al-Qaeda? The apartheid government in Pretoria? We must remember the disgrace of Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, Beyonce and 50 Cent (who) were exposed... singing for Gaddafi's family and earning millions of dollars for it."...

However, the 47-year-old musician admitted he had suffered a "complete blank" due to the pressure of being in the sing-off. Speaking to host Myleene Klass, he said: "It's not like doing a gig and I had a...

Andy Bell has become the fourth celebrity to leave Popstar To Operastar. The Erasure lead failed to win over the judges after landing bottom of the public vote alongside Toploader's Joseph Washbourn. Bell's fate was seemingly sealed after he forgot his words and appeared to lose confidence in his performance during a final sing-off against Washbourn. As host Myleene Klass threw voting over to the panel, judge Katherine Jenkins stated that she had "hoped [the decision] wouldn't be as clear cut", before accepting that eliminating Bell was the "totally fair thing to do". Jenkins's sentiment was echoed by Vanessa-Mae, who argued that "nerves got the better of" Bell and opted to vote him out. Simon Callow also decided to spare Washbourn - who has finished in the bottom of the public vote for the previous two weeks - (more)...

Speaking afterwards, Melody admitted she hoped her appearance would inspire people to try something new. She said: "Honestly, I just tried to relax as much as possible. I'm not here for me. I want people to be inspired and to do something they don't ordinarily do. I think I'm not in my home here and I could have used some more support.

Joe Washbourn has confessed that he never suspected he would be competing on ‘Popstar to Operastar’ “in a million years”.
The Toploader singer confessed that while his new role was an unexpected one, he has so far “thoroughly enjoyed” learning how to sing classically because it is so different to the style of the ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ hitmakers.
He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: “It’s pretty random singing opera. I didn’t think I’d do it in a million years but I thoroughly enjoyed it in the rehearsals, so I thought, ‘Why not?’
“It’s nice to do something completely different and get out of your comfort zone.”
Joe will sing in the competition for the first time on Sunday (12.06.11), and he thinks the judging line-up of classical violinist Vanessa Mae, theatre director Simon Callow, Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and Mexican-born tenor Rolando Villazon are much harsher than last year’s panellists.

Midge Ure became the first celebrity to leave ITV’s Popstar To Operastar last night, when he and former Pussycat Dolls star Melody Thornton found themselves in the bottom two after receiving the lowest amount of public votes.
The decision between the two singers was then in the hands of the judging panel and while Rolando and Vanessa Mae voted to save Midge, Simon Callow voted to save Melody, leading to Katherine Jenkins casting the deciding vote, as this week’s head judge.
The Welsh singer voted to save Melody saying:
“The biggest improvement for me, and if we were to give them another song, they could come up with more, is Melody.”
Upon being voted out, Midge Ure said: “I’ll have to go back to my day job. No-one wants to go in the first round but I think I did a reasonable job and I go out with great aplomb.

Things weren’t looking great for Cheryl Baker when she started on Popstar To Operastar this evening.
The former Bucks Fizz singer admitted that she has never been a fan if classical singing or music in the past, she confessed:
“I have always thought that opera is snobby and for toffs. Why does it always have to sung in French, German and Italian?”
However, as we watched her Vt we realised that as she received more and more training, the 57 year old star actually became more comfortable with the genre and when she took to the stage on the ITV live show, we were pleasantly surprised by her voice.
Surprisingly, her vocals were very strong, much more steady than those of her fellow female contestant Melody Thornton and we can see why bosses saved Cheryl’s performance for last….it really was the highlight of the show.

Midge Ure admitted that he was nervous about taking to the Popstar To Operastar satge tonight, because he has never had any classical or porofessional musical training….in fact he can’t even read sheet music.
The Live Aid legend told cameras that he doesn’t want to put on a ‘cartoon opera voice,’ adding ‘I don’t intend to be Pavarotti…because I’m not!’
He had a hard time acting out his song in rehearsals but when he performed on the live ITV show, Midge seemed a little more self assured.
The 57 year old singer took on Questa O Quella from Rigoletto and probably had a less typically classical voice than either Melody Thornton or Joe McElderry who sang before him. He was definitely uncomfortable with the genre of music, however there was something very likeable about him on stage.

Melody Thornton previously admitted that she is hoping to win this year’s series of Popstar To Operastar based on her electric personality, rather than her vocal skills.
Tonight, as we watched her rehearsal video, we thought she might need to show a bit more spark because her performance didn’t seem to be going well at all.
However, when she took to the stage and sang a piece from Carmen, Melody actually wasn’t half bad. It started well, got a little tired at the end and wasn’t half as good as Joe McElderry’s earlier effort.…but all in all we didn’t think it was too bad.

Joe McElderry had a distinct advantage over his fellow competitors on tonight’s Popstar To Operastar.
The 19 year old singer from South Shields is no stranger to reality TV shows and knows what it’s liked to be judged and criticised by a panel of experts, because he won the 2009 series of The X Factor.
Tonight, as Joe tried his hand at opera for the first time, he was asked to take on the role of a ‘dreamy lovestruck peasant boy’ by his mentor, Rolando Villazón.
We expected to have a little giggle at Joe this evening and we know many people have been making jokes at his expense about how far he has fallen since being dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label last month.
However, when he started to sing, we got a glimpse of the star that inspired all those millions of people to vote for him two years ago.
