Helen Mirren hasn’t played that many historical characters in her storied career. But somehow when she has, she not only brings exemplary acting skill but also an imposing regality, obviously handy when she’s playing monarchs like queens Elizabeth I and II as well as Catherine the Great. That said, surely I’m not the only viewer who has felt that sometimes her portrayals of, say, Alma Hitchcock (in Hitchcock) or Hedda Hopper (Trumbo) are flattering to the women she’s impersonating because Mirren, in addition to being a great performer, is and always has been a great beauty. Her Elizabeth I in The Audience and The Queen, both written by The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan, is the Og screen Lilibet — wry, haughty … and too glam by half, even in a dowdy Barbour jacket and headscarf. Cheekbones will out.

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's overall deal at Starz may be over, but the star is still dedicated to developing hit series for the premium cabler.
Starz announced today it is in development on Fightland, executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
The scripted drama series is set within the high stakes, cash rich, dangerous world of British boxing.
Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith have signed on work on the project that follows a retired disgraced world champion fighter drawn into the corrupt underbelly of the sport after the disappearance of his childhood best friend and training partner.
To save his friend, the troubled fighter will have to return to a way of life that nearly destroyed him – one that cost him everything to leave behind.
“‘Fightland’ embodies the stakes, swagger and ambition that collaborations between Starz and 50 Cent have come to represent,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at Starz of the show entering development.

Nicholas Hoult had some interesting insight to share about the evolution of Emperor Peter III, his character on Hulu’s “The Great.” Hoult shared his thoughts with Variety senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv.
“He’s now a doting father, which is the transition for most sex slaves, I think,” Hoult said during the red carpet interview. “It’s an examination of Catherine and his relationship, and Elle [Fanning] is such a wonderful actress, we have a lot of fun.”
Hoult referred to the long-spanning relationship between the show’s two main characters, which has evolved drastically over the course of the show’s two-season run. Both Hoult and Fanning are nominated for their performances at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, for lead actor and actress in a comedy series, respectively.
At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept.

The winners in the Emmy Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 are once again in the race. The only catch is it could be one of three people: Donald Glover who took it in 2017, Bill Hader who nabbed it in 2018 and 2019, or Jason Sudeikis who won last year. Voters have given us all sorts of reasons to make a prediction for one of this trio. The other three in this year’s race are first-time nominees in the category, but two of them are true veteran showbiz icons. This group of heavy hitters presents us with a category that is not at all easy to prognosticate, one that could go any which way.
Donald Glover, Atlanta
Glover’s series Atlanta brought him Emmys in its first season in 2017, for directing and for this category. The next year he received five personal nominations, including four for doing everything on Atlanta.

From ‘Blonde’ to ‘Bones and All,’ Get to Know These Must-Listen Audiobooks Before the Films Come Out
It’s fall film festival season and there’s a whole new crop of literary-minded films coming to screens through the rest of the year. Since the films that premiere at festivals like Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York are the ones that fill awards nominations lists a few months later, the festivals provide an early peek at the movies that will be front and center at the Oscars, film critics awards and all the other end-of-year kudosfests.
But there’s a way to get to know many of these works even before they premiere at festivals and come to streaming or movie screens: get familiar with the books they’re based on. These titles won’t be winning the original screenplay prize, but there are at least eight adaptations of notable literary works coming this year that are worth diving into. If reading time is short, why not try listening on audiobook while commuting,...

“The Great” takes place in 18th century Russia during the reign of Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) and then Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) after she overthrew him. But the show is very much a revisionist history, and that extends to the visual details. “The palace that we built from scratch is inspired by so many different palaces all around the world,” explains production designer Francesca Di Mottola. We talked with Di Mottola as part of our “Meet the Experts” panel of Emmy-nominated production designers. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Being really wide with our research” is “a great source of inspiration,” Di Mottola adds. “There’s always something in the script that will spark the initial research.” Kicking off those scripts for season two was Catherine’s coup against Peter, which left the royal palace in chaos. “We literally had to rebuild part of the palace to be able to tackle the destruction.

This story about “The Great” stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In its second season, “The Great” found a new gear and Emmy voters noticed.
The relationships between Russia’s Catherine the Great and her tyrant husband Peter got messier and more complicated, the hormonal and sexual energy once Catherine became an expectant mother got more intense, and the stakes were raised to the point that it wasn’t clear if even Peter would make it out alive.
After voters bypassed them in the Hulu comedy’s first season, stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult both landed lead acting nominations this year, their first in each of their careers that date back decades despite their relative youth.
It’s clear the actors have a playful back and forth that has seeped into their combative, on-screen performances.

At last year’s Emmys, Gillian Anderson became a two-time winner when she added a shiny new statuette for “The Crown” (Drama Supporting Actress) next to her 1997 trophy for “The X-Files” (Drama Actress). Now, the versatile performer could add two more Emmy Awards to her mantel thanks to the one-two punch of appearing on “The Great” (Comedy Guest Actress) and starring on “The First Lady” (Movie/Limited Actress).
On Hulu’s period comedy series, Anderson takes on the role of Joanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp in the second season, the mother of Elle Fanning‘s Catherine the Great. Joanna is a German socialite who specializes in arranging marriages, and she comes to Russia with “sinister intentions” after learning of her daughter’s coup attempt. However, things soon take a turn for the dramatic when she begins flirting with Catherine’s ex-husband, the ousted Emperor Peter (Nicholas Hoult).

Elle Fanning is Hulu’s Mvp this year, in contention via both her edgy comedy series “The Great” and the dark limited series “The Girl From Plainville.” Not only does she star in both she also serves as an executive producer on the two projects.

It’s a valuable resource that has launched countless careers and contained work that led to great movies, but taking first place on the annual Black List — a collection of the best unmade screenplays in Hollywood, coming up to its 13th year — isn’t necessarily a guarantee that your movie will go on to greatness. Some have been produced only to be greeted tepidly (“Things We Lost In The Fire,” “The Beaver,” “Draft Day”), a couple of outliers did go on to awards-lauded success (“Recount,” “The Imitation Game”), but most, from Western “The Brigands Of Rattleborge” in 2006 to 2014’s “Catherine The Great” biopic, remain unmade to this day.

Angelina Jolie is developing two films at Universal, including a Catherine The Great movie. Bride Of Frankenstein could still happen too.
Angelina Jolie arguably remains one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood. Granted, the last time she appeared in a live-action film was for 2015’s underperformer, By the Sea. But prior to that misfire, the combination of her marquee name and Disney nostalgia propelled Maleficent to a $759 million gross during the summer of 2014. And along with a purported Maleficent 2, many producers have sought the star to reprise roles in potential blockbusters like a now dormant Wanted 2 and the abandoned Salt 2.
However, personal life aside, she has kept a low profile in Hollywood, electing instead to direct a movie set and produced in Cambodia (Netflix has since purchased the international rights). Apparently things are changing at Universal Pictures, however, since THR is reporting she has...

The end is nigh—or so we think. In the final episodes of House of Cards season four, we come to terms with what’s going on from the start: Claire and Frank never truly loved each other but rather are a political union made for world domination. A modern day Catherine the Great married to Alexander the Great, with the only question of who is more powerful and willing to do what it takes.
And that question keeps on leaning more and more into the grey area. For the first few seasons at least, we always figured that Claire supported Frank in everything he did, always there to provide support and some outside the box thinking. But as we delve further into her character this season, we understand that she may be more of a megalomaniac than we once considered. We knew that they both had it in them,...

Barbra Streisand is planning a return to the director’s chair for her first dramatic movie since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces. Streisand, one of the most prominent female directors, is tackling the story of one of history’s most powerful women, Catherine the Great. She is attached to direct the biopic of the Russian empress, with the project, being produced by Gil Netter, not yet set up but in the process of being packaged. Born Sophia Augusta Fredericka to German royalty, Catherine took power after her husband was assassinated and ruled from 1762 to 1796, in the process reinvigorating the Russian empire

In a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver psyched out the viewing public with a fake factoid, claiming Abraham Lincoln once pardoned John Wilkes Booth of attempted bestiality because the criminal was intoxicated at the time. That information, he claimed, came from a fake-sounding book called Stranger Than Truth: John Oliver's 101 Favorite History Lies. But in his latest web exclusive, Oliver says that book is legitimate – and scheduled for publication next Spring via Simon & Schuster.

Exclusive: Producer Eric Newman’s new Studiocanal shingle Grand Electric has set its first project, an adaptation of Trevor Lummis’ Life And Death In Eden: Pitcairn Island And The Bounty Mutineers, which scribe Kristina Lauren Anderson has been set to adapt. The pic will tell the true tale of what happened after the famed Hms Bounty mutiny led by Fletcher Christian — the 1789 naval uprising that Hollywood has re-created often with the likes of Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson playing Christian.
The news comes just more than a month after Newman pacted on the multi-year joint venture with Studiocanal in his first tie-up since he and Marc Abraham split their prolific Universal-based Strike Entertainment. He has been busy since then, among other things exec producing for Netflix Hemlock Grove and the upcoming Narcos with Jose Padilha directing.

Cambridge, Mass. (AP) - Helen Mirren has been honored as woman of the year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals, twerking as part of the traditional spoof roast on Thursday.
Mirren at first tried to sign the word "twerk," then let slip a curse word and danced. She said she's tried to twerk privately in her bedroom and having to do it in public was humiliating.
She also joked that being honored by Prince Charles as Dame of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace didn't come anywhere close to getting the ceremonial Hasting Pudding pot at Harvard. The festivities also included a parade.
Mirren, 68, won the 2007 best actress Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen" and has been nominated on three other occasions. She also appeared in "Age of Consent, "Gosford Park" and "The Madness of King George."

The event series — described as “one of the most ambitious” ever produced for the BBC — will be made by BBC Cymru Wales and penned by Andrew Davies. Davies’ credits include screen versions of everything from the original House Of Cards to Pride And Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Brideshead Revisited and Bridget Jones. His serialized adaptation of the tome of tomes is due to air in the UK in 2015. Tolstoy’s War And Peace begins in 1805 Russia and centers on five aristocratic families set against the backdrop of the reign of Alexander I, the lingering effects of his grandmother Catherine The Great’s rule and the events surrounding Napoleon’s invasion...

Fitting in with the in crowd. That's just as important a part of school as achieving high grades. Some find this easier than others. If you're blessed with good looks, razor sharp cheekbones and buckets of charisma, bordering on arrogance, you've bypassed the queue and entered the inner sanctum of cool. If you're not so lucky, you have to work just that little bit harder. Finding a hidden talent can help - if you're in a band or croon a bit in the bathroom, this will come in useful. Sporty? Again, a useful cool card to be played. And judging by the latest Buffy episode, Witch, shaking balls of shredded paper while chanting at the top of your voice provides the girls with a pass into the trendy clique.
Having already established a reputation as a stake-wielding harbinger of death to all vampires, it's little wonder that Buffy's having...

Depending on what area of the world you live in, The Loved Ones may have been released in your country years ago. For those in the Us, however, it was just released on DVD last week and I had a chance to briefly talk with Robin McLeavy about taking on the role of the unforgettable Lola:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. Can you tell me how you became involved with The Loved Ones and what drew you to Lola?
Robin McLeavy: At the time, I was playing Catherine the Great with the Sydney Theater Company. We were performing political coups in the play and killing people, so I already had a hand in the murdering side of things [laughs]. I don’t normally go for horror films, but as soon as I read that there was a female antagonist, I was instantly excited.

A breezy account of how a Greek sailor, Varvakis (Sebastian Koch) survives the Greek Civil War, before ending up working out of a Russian brothel from where he discovers a method of preserving caviar. As trade with Greece booms, the money starts pouring in. Starting off with an older Varvakis secluded on an island chatting to McCormic (John Cleese), the clunky narrative is told in flashback and with a jaunty tone. There is not much to recommend as the story swings wildly from one set piece to another. Of minor note: Catherine Deneuve has a cameo appearance as Catherine the Great in director Iannis Smaragdis’ turgid tale. Criticwire grade: D [Kaleem Aftab]...

If you thought Carrie White flipped out at her prom in "Carrie," wait until you see the lengths Lola "Princess" Stone -- played by Robin McLeavy -- goes to in "The Loved Ones" to land her dream date. The critically acclaimed 2009 Australian horror film directed by Sean Byrne has been described as a combination of "Pretty in Pink" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" for its depiction of lonely Princess kidnapping and torturing (with the help of her dad) the guy she is crushing on. "The Loved Ones" is currently playing in select cities.
Aussie actress McLeavy, who turns 31 this month, comes from a theater background and jumped at the chance to play a girl who is a tad mental. McLeavy chatted us up about getting into her character's headspace and who she will be playing in this summer's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."

Oscar-nominated production designer J Michael Riva has died, Variety reports. The New York-born veteran had been working on the new Quentin Tarantino film Django Unchained. He was 63.
Riva's Oscar nod came in 1985 for his work on Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. He also won an Emmy in 2007 for his work on the 79th Academy Awards ceremony, his second time in charge of production design duties following a stint in 2002.
Part of a showbiz family – he was the grandson of Marlene Dietrich – Riva's long list of credits included work on forthcoming comic book reboot The Amazing Spider-Man as well as The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, and the first two Iron Man films. His father worked on Broadway as a set designer and his mother appeared in Dietrich's 1934 historical drama The Scarlet Empress, playing Catherine the Great as a child.

In Sean Byrne's Australian horror import The Loved Ones, Robin McLeavy plays spoiled "daddy's girl" Lola Stone, who isn't used to not getting her way, especially around prom season.
This year she has her eye on Brent (Xavier Samuel), but he already has a girlfriend named Holly (Victoria Thaine) and very little interest in going to the big dance. When Brent rebuffs Lola, she has her father (John Brumpton) kidnap Brent just so "Princess" can have the prom she's always wanted.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with McLeavy about her sociopathic character, the power of female protagonists in the horror genre and more. Check out highlights from our chat with the actress below, and look for The Loved Ones in limited theaters this weekend via Tugg and courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

Annette Benning is set to star in Gillian Armstrong’s "The Great", an irreverent comedy inspired by the life of 18th century Russian empress Catherine The Great for Macgowan Films and Lago Films reports Screen Daily.
The most renowned and the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, Catherine II ruled during the second half of the 18th century and revitalised the country into one of the great powers of Europe. Much like with Elizabeth I in the UK, Catherine's reign is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility.
Marian Macgowan and Marco Mehlitz are producing from a script by Tony McNamara. Shooting kicks off in September.

[1] Apparently, Channing Tatum is the guy you call when Bradley Cooper drops out of a project. Over the summer, Tatum's name came up [2] for Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's (now grounded [3]) The Crow remake when Cooper left the project, and now that Cooper's turned down Steven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Tatum's reportedly being "eyed" for the lead. Were Tatum to get the part, it would mark his third collaboration with the director -- the two have already completed Haywire [4] together, and are currently working on the male stripper pic Magic Mike. More details after the jump. George Clooney was originally slated to play American spy Napoleon Solo back in 2010 [5], but he dropped out, according to Deadline [6], because he was having surgery and couldn't manage the stunt work. Matt Damon and Johnny Depp both passed on the part before Cooper got his offer [7] last month, but Cooper declined [8] last week.
