To celebrate the release of Enter the Clones of Bruce on Digital and coming to Blu-Ray 27th May, we have a Blu-Ray to give away!
When the world’s most famous martial artist and screen icon Bruce Lee died in 1974 at just 32 years of age, he’d completed only four films. Within hours of his funeral, Hong Kong studios began producing hundreds of unauthorised biopics, sequels, prequels and spin-offs, finding a new legion of stars whose main skill was that they were Lee lookalikes. Over the next decade ‘Bruceploitation’ would become a staple of global cinema.
Now following its hugely successful premiere at FrightFest 2023, Enter the Clones of Bruce, a cinematic story like no other, gets its UK release on digital and on Blu-ray from 27 May 2024, complete with a slew of special features thanks to Severin Films.

The success of Bruce Lee's films on the international scene saw several attempts over the years by Golden Harvest to try and recapture the lightning in a bottle. Some saw efforts to launch a new star, others like “A Queen's Ransom” featuring recognizable “talent” from the west. George Lazenby whilst not a big star at the time was still a “name” having appeared as 007 in “On Her Majesty's Secret Service”. So, it feels somehow apt that he was cast as the terrorist out to kill her here. Backed up by Jimmy Wang Yu and Angela Mao it should on the surface have been a bigger deal. With Eureka Entertainment releasing it on Blu Ray we can discover for ourselves whether it deserves to be.

After joining the Hong Kong film industry as a screenwriter in the early 1950s, Chinese-born Huang Feng's directorial debut was Shaw Brothers' “The Crimson Charm”. He then went on to direct more films for Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest starring his leading lady Angela Mao in “The Angry River” (1971), “Lady Whirlwind”, “Hapkido” (1972), “When Taekwondo Strikes” (1973) and “The Tournament” (1974). Widely credited to have discovered the hapkido trained martial artist and actress Angela Mao Ying, Huang retired in 1980.

Vintage martial arts film fans rejoice as the 70s classic, The Shaolin Plot, is set for a 2K restoration release on Blu-ray. The Mvd Entertainment Group has just released a trailer for Arrow Video’s new physical copy release of the Sammo Hung film. The Shaolin Plot comes from director Huang Feng (director of Lady Whirlwind & When Taekwando Strikes), the father of modern Kung Fu films and a mentor to John Woo (Face/Off) and Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx). The cast features Sammo Hung, James Tien and Cassanova Wong.
The release details read,
“In 1977, fight choreographer Sammo Hung made one last film under his mentor, director Huang Feng before graduating to the director’s chair himself with The Iron-Fisted Monk. That film was the rarely-seen martial arts ensemble thriller The Shaolin Plot, which sees the pair reunite with Hong Kong heavy Chan Sing (New Fist of Fury). Prince...

A singularly wacky moment in film history is poked in “Enter the Clones of Bruce.” It surveys the years immediately following Bruce Lee’s untimely 1973 death, when the sudden international thirst for martial arts movies that he’d awoken could seemingly only be slaked by the man himself — or by a host of imitators who popped up under lookalike pseudonyms.
David Gregory’s documentary won’t convince most viewers that the resulting flood of opportunistic cheapies are worth more extensive investigation. But they’re certainly cheesy fun in excerpt, and interviews with surviving participants provide an entertaining window into an anything-goes heyday for Hong Kong cinema. Premiering in Tribeca’s midnight section, this high-kicking flashback should appeal to the same fans who previously enjoyed such prior psychotronic excavations as “Not Quite Hollywood,” “Electric Boogaloo” or this director’s own prior investigations of cult figures Al Adamson and Richard Stanley.

In 1970, prominent Hong Kong producers Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho left the legendary Shaw Brothers studio to found the now iconic Golden Harvest. The new studio would grow to dominate the Hong Kong film landscape for the next thirty years, overseeing the rise of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and, of course, the immortal Bruce Lee.
Alongside these male superstars emerged another kung fu hero who has built a lasting cinematic legacy of her own – Angela Mao. Mao starred in Golden Harvest's first feature production, the magical wuxia adventure film “The Angry River” (1971). The film was helmed by the debuting director, Huang Feng, marking the first of nine successful collaborations between Feng and Mao.
Below are listed five of Feng and Mao's most electrifying joint projects, ranging from the bizarre to the brutal:

Released in 1971, “The Angry River” is a significant piece of Hong Kong cinema for several reasons.
For a start, the film served as the directorial debut of Hong Kong-based filmmaker Huang Feng, who would go on to helm several kick-ass classics, including “Hapkido” (1972) and “The Shaolin Plot” (1977). Secondly, the feature sees the queen of kung fu herself, Angela Mao, in a leading role for the first time. Mao would go on to become a martial arts cinema icon, partly through her further collaborations with Feng. Finally, “The Angry River” was the first film to be produced by the newly established Golden Harvest, which would become the dominant studio in Hong Kong over the next few decades.
Like all great wuxia films, a sense of magic and discovery runs throughout “The Angry River”. Mao plays the courageous Lan Feng, who ventures out to find a rare medicinal herb that will cure her dying father,...

Though she’s a familiar name to kung fu movie fans, Angela Mao Ying has never had the crossover recognition of contemporaries like Bruce Lee and Sammo Hung. Perhaps this 50th anniversary reissue of two of her films will do something to address that.
Both films in this set date from 1972, and were directed by Huang Feng, but Lady Whirlwind was made and released first. In this, Mao plays Tien Li-Chun, who is on a mission of vengeance against Ling Shih-hua (Chang Yi), who she blames for her sister’s suicide. However, Ling Shih-hua is engaged in a battle with some local gangsters. Tien agrees to spare Ling, but only until he can kill Tung Ku.

Angela Mao and director Huang Feng (The Shaolin Plot) were a superstar pairing that produced an incredible series of top-tier kung-fu classics including Deadly China Doll, When Taekwondo Strikes, and the two films presented here – Hapkido and Lady Whirlwind.
In Hapkido (aka. Lady Kung Fu in the West), a group of martial artists starts their own school to teach the Korean martial art, Hapkido, but a rival Japanese academy attempts to crush them – deeming Hapkido inferior to their Japanese fighting style. Similar to the plot of Bruce Lee’s Fist Of Fury, Hapkido was a huge hit in the West, even briefly beating Lee’s Enter The Dragon at the North American box office.

While not the first film to depict such a situation, the Angela Mao-led, Huang Feng-directed “Hapkido” is certainly one of the more enjoyable efforts to depict the time in the early 1930s, when Japan occupied Korea. Filled with fun action scenes and combined with a stellar period setting and a fun, breezy story that recalls the earlier Bruce Lee effort “Fist of Fury,” that makes this one of the best Golden Harvest efforts.

One of the highlights of the last year in the United Kingdom has been the release of several King Hu movies on blu ray allowing one of the true craftsman of Asian cinema to be re-appreciated. Given the prodigious output of his contemporaries, it seems astonishing that his whole canon only amounts to 14 Features, yet some of these are undeniably masterpieces.
Like “Dragon Inn”, this is more of a traditional wuxia movie as opposed to more fantastical works like “A Touch of Zen” but that is not to belittle it in any way.

On March 21, 1973, audiences lured by fliers promising a free flick delivering “Sights and Sounds like never before!” settled into the Loews State theater in the heart of Times Square, and watched one of the most important foreign film premieres of all time — King Boxer. Dubbed into English and retitled Five Fingers of Death, it left jaws on the sticky floor and opened the floodgates for a tidal wave of kung fu flicks to swamp American grindhouse screens in the Summer of ‘73. Bruce Lee died that July and his Enter the Dragon blew up the box office one month later. The King was dead! Long live the King! National General released his earlier Chinatown hits. After decades lost in the darkest corners of video distribution, on samizdat VHS tapes haphazardly dubbed and cropped, or edited by companies like Miramax and even less reputable organizations, the 21st century has been pretty good for the classics of Chinese-language cinema. At least, for those films in the kung fu genre, kickstarted by Celestial Pictures remastering and restoring the original audio of much of the 60s and 70s Shaw Brothers library in the early 2000s. This has led in turn to a growing recognition in the West of the work of directors like Lau Kar-leung and Chang Cheh, thanks to quality releases through imprints like the Weinsteins' sadly defunct Dragon Dynasty label. Recently the U.K. company Eureka Video has picked up where they left off, releasing restored version of 80s and 90s classics like the Police Story (1985), Project A (1983) and Once Upon a Time in China (1991–7) movies,...

Few cinematic genres are more polarizing to audiences than that of kung-fu cinema. For those who the genre rubs the right way, these are some of the most exciting and captivating works of pure cinema (bodies interacting with one another through space and time) around, while its detractors frown sternly in the face of its arch choreography and B-movie storylines. However, thanks to The Metrograph and its ongoing Old School Kung Fu Fest (now in its seventh iteration under the leadership of the team at Subway Cinema), these films are finding not only a new home among critics but also new found context within film writ large.

August can be a miserable time to go to the movies, and it’s almost always a miserable time to be in New York City. But, for at least one glorious weekend this month, neither of those time-honored facts will be true. Beginning on Friday, August 18, Subway Cinema’s Old School Kung Fu Fest returns to The Metrograph theater in lower Manhattan for another incredible weekend of flying courtesans, iconic sword fights, and even a little pistol action for people who like their body-chops and dropkicks with some bullets on the side.

At the peak of her fame in the 1970s, martial arts star Angela Mao was marketed as the female equivalent of Bruce Lee. Her role as Lee’s sister in Enter The Dragon brought her to international fame in 1973, but she starred in numerous Hong Kong films of her own, including 1974‘s The Tournament. But Mao largely disappeared from the screen in 1983, and the woman herself seemed to vanish from the face of the earth entirely a decade later. In a New York Times article called “Searching For Lady Kung Fu,” writer Alex Vadukul catches up with the now-66-year-old Mao to find out what happened to the actress after her brief but memorable time in the spotlight. As it happens, the rumors circulating about her among fans were basically true. Yes, she left the business to concentrate on being a wife and mother. And, yes, she now ...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

Golden Harvest started in 1970, after Raymond Chow had left Shaw Brothers studios along with producer Leonard Ho and decided to start there own company and go up against the dominance of Shaw Brothers.
Shaw Brothers had been the leading studio for many years, showcasing legendary Directors, Actors and Marital Artists. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho knew they had to come with something big and make a huge noise in the world of cinema and indeed they did just that. They made a few movies in 1971 such as The Angry River, Lady Whirlwind and One Armed Boxer. But one Actor stood out over the rest, showcasing his incredible talent for the first time in a big movie and his name was Bruce Lee. When the Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong, the audience cheered and mobbed Bruce after the movie had ended.

Moon lee is simply one of the greatest female fighters in Martial Arts film history. Her high tempo fight scenes and hard hitting action ranks her among the greats, along with Angela Mao, Cynthia Rothrock and Yukari Oshima.
Some of her early movies roles which spring to mind are as follows – Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain, The Champions, Those Merry Souls and The Protector. After that we got to see her in the first two classic Mr.Vampire movies, but it wasn’t until the movie Angel that we finally seen what she could do. “Girls with Guns” genre was born, Moon teamed up with Yukari Oshima and delivered big time that females could fight as well and tough as men do and wow, she was not wrong.
Moon Lee stepped away from making movies around 1995, but as always continued doing her main passion which is dancing, something she...

The Interview and the geopolitical crisis it caused is arguably the most important movie-related story of recent weeks.
The story device featured in The Interview, the idea of a film featuring the assassination of the current ruling leader, is nothing new, and in fact is seen through much of film’s history. In 1941 a German-in-exile Fritz Lang shown an unsuccessful attack on Adolf Hitler in Man Hunt (this story was also told in BBC’s Rogue Male from 1976 starring Peter O’Toole). The Shaw Brothers used the actual newsreel footage of Queen Elisabeth visiting Hong-Kong (then a British colony) in their 1976 martial arts flick A Queen’s Ransom (a.k.a. The International Assassin) starring post-James Bond George Lazenby as an Ira assassin and Angela Mao as a heroine trying to stop him. In fact, the Queen of England might be the most popular assassination target among actual world leaders...

I have been waiting for this game a while now, i seen some of the early footage 6 months back and it looked great. Now, the game is finally released online through steam and in its full appearance, looks amazing. Every Kung Fu and Martial Arts fan needs to grab this, the characters are re-named but you can tell who they are instantly, such as Angela Mao, Jim Kelly, Jackie Chan, Bruce lee, Lau kar Leung, Gordon Liu, Tony Jaa and more.
The backgrounds on the levels looks fantastic, with traditional Kung Fu movie sets up like tea house fight, Drunken master training scenery and many more. Each fighter has there own style, Muay Thai, Drunken Fist, Karate and must face the lead villain called Red Ronin.
So, if you are a Kung Fu movie fan, this game is for you 100%. You have been waiting...

Two of the world’s biggest genre geeks, Quentin Tarantino and Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, discussed Asian cinema, casting and creative independence at the Busan film festival on Friday.
Tarantino said he was at an awards show in Macau when he heard his casting director on Inglourious Basterds, Jenny Jue, was going to hang with Bong in Busan and decided to tag along. The two directors have spent a few days eating, drinking and shooting the breeze and, much to Tarantino’s excitement, went to see the restored version of One-Armed Swordsman, starring Jimmy Wang Yu, at the festival last night. They met the crowds in a special Open Talk session at Busan on Friday afternoon.
“I saw The Host when it was released in Us theatres and was blown away,” said Tarantino, referring to Bong’s 2006 creature feature. “Of all the filmmakers I’ve seen out there, he has that thing that ‘70s Spielberg had – he...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences kicks off its new exhibition, “Kick Ass! Kung Fu Posters from the Stephen Chin Collection,” with a 40th anniversary screening of “Enter the Dragon” on Wednesday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will feature an introduction by Stephen Chin and an onstage discussion with the film’s cast and crew, including actor John Saxon, screenwriter Michael Allin, cinematographer Gil Hubbs and producers Fred Weintraub and Paul Heller. There will be special evening gallery hours immediately following the screening.
In 2011, producer and screenwriter Chin donated his collection of more than 800 kung fu film posters and related materials to the Academy. A six-sheet poster from “Enter the Dragon” is featured prominently in the exhibition, along with such collectibles as early English-language kung fu manuals, skateboards, trading cards and lunchboxes. A viewing station will feature action-packed...

10.Jean Claude Van Damme
Jean Claude is one of the best kickers i have seen out of the Asian movie market. His jumping spin kicks are brilliant, hitting with speed and power, which would take anyone’s head off. Van Damme was also a former member of the Belgium Team that won the European Championships in 1979 in Brussels.
Some of Van Dammes best kicking skills can be watched in movies such as No Retreat, No Surrender, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Double Impact, The Quest and so on. He recently starred as the main villain in The Expendables 2, which he did a great job,...
