Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Golden Lion Winner Poor Things is here with Searchlight Pictures sewing up nine theaters in four major markets for leg one of the Emma Stone-starring surreal-period-comedy-horror.
The film debuts in NYC and LA as well as San Francisco and Austin (Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar). Lanthimos, Stone and stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe join Q&As in New York and tickets have been selling out. Stone hosted SNL last Saturday, joining the exclusive “five-timers club”, and made stops in recent days at Good Morning America, Sunday Today and ABC News Live Prime to talk up the fantastical tale.
Stone plays Bella Baxter, a young Victorian woman mysteriously brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Godwin Baxter (Dafoe) who lives as the doctor’s ward.

The 2016 Tony Awards were something of a rout: With its 11 wins, Hamilton was the only new musical to take home any trophies at all. But it wasn’t the only Broadway smash of the season. Waitress, the smaller-scale, utterly lovely adaptation of writer-director Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, ran for nearly four years, finally closing in January 2020.
Like Hamilton, Waitress’s composer-lyricist would come to also star in the production: Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles appeared for three short stints in the lead role, causing the box office to surge each time. When theaters reopened, so, too, did Waitress, in a limited remounting in late 2021, designed in part to allow the cameras to capture Bareilles’s performance. This film was no doubt inspired by the artistic and commercial success of Hamilton’s “pro-shot,” as official films of stage performances have come to be known in the theater community.

The Broadway revival of Camelot is ending its run on July 23.
The revival of the Lerner & Loewe musical, which features a revised book by Aaron Sorkin, began its run on March 9 at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater and opened on April 13.
The revival of the 1960 musical received mixed reviews, but capacity dipped to 80 percent and grosses fell in recent weeks. Additionally, Camelot received five Tony Award nominations, including best revival of a musical, but did not take home any trophies. The production had planned to extend through at least Sept. 3.
The Bartlett Sher-directed revival, originally written by Alan Jay Lerner and centering on King Arthur’s creation of his kingdom and the love triangle between Arthur, Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, featured a slightly trimmed down story and snappier dialogue, courtesy of Sorkin, who also removed all supernatural elements from the plot. In hindsight, it’s quite amazing that anyone could watch Adrienne Shelly’s final film as a director and see it as anything but a movie. It was a good one, a simple story about a small-town woman who falls pregnant by her abusive lover and complicates matters by having an affair with her gynecologist. Starring Keri Russell, the film was funny, romantic, frankly feminist and pulled no punches when it needed to, and its modest success of the box office made it all the more tragic that Shelly, murdered in her own apartment by a construction worker in 2006, would never make another.
Taking that and putting it on the Broadway stage was probably not on anyone’s bingo card, yet this production — directed by Diane Paulus with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, and book by Jessie Nelson — sails by, even though it adds 40 minutes of running time to Shelly’s slender story.

“When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill, and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant, and which know me not, I am frightened, and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Who has put me here? By whose order and direction have this place and time been allotted to me?” —Blaise Pascal, PenséesA master without a masterwork: such, one might say, is the peculiar, paradoxical position of American filmmaker Michael Almereyda. Jeff Daniels takes up Peck’s mantle in the current production, playing lead character Atticus Finch.
Last week, the production broke the single-week record for the highest-grossing American play in Broadway history. It also holds the Shubert Organization’s box office mark for the highest weekly gross of any Broadway play in the organization’s century-plus history.

Gotham is enjoying a terrific run at the moment. With Bruce Wayne stepping up to become a vigilante and more of the villains coming out of the woodwork – like Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow – it’s thrilling to see the legendary Batman mythos slowly begin to form. Let’s hope the quality continues in the fourth episode of season 4, titled “The Demon’s Head.”
Yes, as the title indicates, Alexander Siddig’s Ra’s al Ghul is back in Bruce Wayne’s hometown to put a new evil scheme into action. This time it revolves around a mystical ancient knife that David Mazouz’s teen billionaire discovers. In the promo for the episode up above, we see the sought-after dagger catching the attention of everyone from Jim Gordon to Barbara Kean. Like the ominous voiceover says: “All tremble before the Demon’s head.”
Here’s the official synopsis for the episode:...

With the season 4 premiere of Gotham now just hours away, there’s a chance that you may be looking for a way to pass the time. Luckily, a few more related goodies have dropped that give us much to ponder over.
As you may have noticed, yesterday brought us a veritable bounty of images culled from the premiere episode, “A Dark Knight: Pax Penguina,” in addition to the first official group photo featuring the principal cast. Well, it appears that each actor stuck around for a few more minutes in order to pose for individual character portraits of their own.
In them, we see returning favorites such as Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), as well as newcomers Ra’s al Ghul (Alexander Siddig) and Sofia Falcone (Crystal Reed). 'True Grit' 2010: Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges. 'True Grit' 2010 review: 'Far Superior' to 1969 John Wayne Western I've gotten to the point with the Coen brothers where I just expect something wonderful every time they make a movie. For me, that was the case even with an effort like True Grit. For others, however, it was different. When the Coens announced their plans to adapt Charles Portis' novel, heads turned and were scratched by many. After all, not only were the brothers going to adapt a book, something they had done only once before (twice if you count The Odyssey), but they were going to remake a movie made famous by John Wayne in 1969. To many, especially lovers of Westerns, touching True Grit was sacrilege. But the Coens weren't deterred, and thankfully so. Their adaptation of True Grit is not only far superior to Henry Hathaway's 1969 version, it...

There are two sides to every conflict, and within each are intricacies and viewpoints that can cause either faction to erupt if the scales are tipped. The stakes for such a quarrel have rarely been higher than in the Cold War, a battle consisting of dueling ideologies rather than all-out warfare, one where a single word or gesture from a side could have unimaginable ripple effects. Despite the eventual outcome being apparent, Steven Spielberg rightfully found this sort of articulated combat to be ripe for drama in his latest film, Bridge of Spies.
Loosely based on a true story — with the timeline greatly condensed and more tightly intertwined — the script from Matt Charman, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen is a snappy, propulsive account of James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), an unblemished Brooklyn lawyer who becomes involved in defending a suspected Kgb agent (Mark Rylance). It shifts from a courtroom drama — although,...

It is, perhaps, a bit strange that the first movie being distributed by Nerdist Industries is an examination of the most hyper-antisocial people of all nerddom. Chris Hardwick’s company, starting off with his Nerdist podcast, has helped emphasize, along with all sorts of big-budget comic-book blockbusters, that nerd culture is now not just part of mainstream culture, but has become its foundation. Zero Charisma is a movie whose lead character becomes almost immediately suspicious of an interloper to his group, someone who professes to being a nerd while being personable, affable, and social. In short, it’s hard not to imagine this film’s lead looking at Hardwick askance, wondering if all his nerd cred is earned or a put-on.

Aside from nasty gossip, safecracking and lying, this Sunday's (Aug. 11) episode of Lifetime's "Devious Maids" is really very sweet.
It's as if everyone needed to take a little break from the over-the-top situations. It's still a telenovela, though.
A maid walks in a couple having sex in the kitchen, a housekeeper is diagnosed with cancer and the seeds to an unorthodox marriage are planted.
The sex on the kitchen counter is between married couple Taylor and Michael (Brianna Brown, Brett Cullen).
Odessa (Melinda Page Hamilton) is under treatment for cancer. The unorthodox marriage in the making is Genevieve's (Susan Lucci). And yes, this falls into the what-else-is-new department.
Broke, because her business manager ran off with all of her money, Genevieve decided the only way to strike it rich again was to marry rich, a scenario that's always worked for her.
You've got to hand it to her. Other people...

Movies about geeks have never been particularly flattering. Even in films like Revenge of the Nerds where the nerds win the day, there is plenty of dramatic license taken to make them badass so they can win the girl. But stories that cut to the heart of geekdom and reveal what true nerdery is all about? Those are extremely rare. It's even rarer when you find yourself pulling for the geek at the heart of those stories, despite everything else.
Luckily this year at SXSW we stumbled across Zero Charisma, a film about a gamemaster struggling to keep his RPG campaign alive after losing one of the main players. But problems arise when he has to battle with the replacement for popularity, and his world begins to unravel. The entire movie hinges on the fantastic performance of Sam Eidson as Scott Weidemeyer, and while he might seem a bit over the top,...

We've seen a few photos of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln on the set of of Steven Spielberg's historical film project Linclon. Today, thanks to Entertainment Weekly we bring you your first official look of the actor as the 16th President of the United States, and he looks fantastic!
The movie is based on the novel Team of Rivals, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. Tony Kushner wrote the script for the film, which will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.
Regarding the photo above, Spielberg said that Day-Lewis...
...captures not just the likeness of the 16th U.S. president, but also the intangible, pensive quality that made him a great leader. Lincoln had a very, very complicated – and at the same time, extremely clear — inner life.
