He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He is survived by his three grandchildren.

He was an advisor to the September 11, 2001 Commission where he helped prepare it's 604 page report on the terrorist attacks published in 2004.
He was a member of the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.
He was Chairman of the History Department at Harvard College from 1976 to 1979 in Boston, Massachusetts.
He was the Dean of Harvard College in Boston, Massachusetts from 1969 to 1971.
