Alexander A. Mayer was born in Chicago and grew up in New York's Hell's
Kitchen. He served in the South Pacific for the US Navy, and settled in
Los Angeles where he studied Fine Art under the GI Bill.
He was an art director at Universal
Studios for over 20 years, and he worked with the best of his era
including Alfred Hitchcock, Paul Newman, Norman Lloyd, Lee Grant and
Fred Astaire. He was also an actor, featured in A Christmas to
Remember, and making an appearance in National Lampoon Goes to the
Movies.
He married in 1959. After a long and respected career, he succumbed to
cancer in 1982.
