The classic Western genre wasn’t really known for its complexities; rather, it was known for its linear storyline. Fueled by a revenge-based story, morality drama, and iconic shots of the American frontier, if I’m being honest, Westerns were a simple pleasure for most people. While Calamity Jane does not offer much, it is, in all fairness, a decent twist to the white male-led genre. Starring Emily Bett Rickards as the female gunslinger, this movie follows similar tropes but from a female perspective.

If there’s any further proof needed that Hollywood tends to keep those that work together in the same orbit from time to time, the connection between Fear the Walking Dead and Deadwood would be another since Garret Dillahunt and Keith Carradine have been seen together in Deadwood a while back. Any fan of both shows would remember that Carradine, who portrayed Wild Bill Hickok, was gunned down by Jack McCall, who was of course played by Dillahunt. It’s kind of interesting to see how Dillahunt, who played John Dorie Jr., was followed up by Carradine, who came in playing the

David Arquette once dated Ellen Barkin. The 46-year-old actor revealed the two dated while filming Wild Bill during an episode of PeopleTV's Couch Surfing. "We were dating at the time," he told host Lola Ogunnaike. "She gets mad at me when I talk about it, but sorry." Barkin played frontierswoman Calamity Jane in the 1995 Western while Arquette played Jack McCall—a man seeking revenge against Jeff Bridges' character Wild Bill Hickok. However, it looks like the two developed an off-screen romance. "She's going to be made at me," Arquette said. "I'm sorry, Ellen. I can't help it." However, Barkin wasn't the only...

“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend,” is an often-quoted line from John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” And if director Walter Hill had stuck to that idea, his “Wild Bill” (1995) would be a great movie, instead of a near miss. Unfortunately, he mixed legend with pure hogwash and the result is a confusing hodgepodge of scenes connected only by the fact that James Butler Hickok (Jeff Bridges) hated it when somebody messed with his hat.
You know a director intends to make a “serious” western when he starts the film out by showing the central character’s funeral. “Wild Bill” begins not only with a funeral, but a funeral shot in high-contrast, grainy black and white. In fact the film keeps switching from color to black and white for numerous flash back scenes, depicting “events” from Bill’s early life, some of which are complete fiction.

A Deadwood movie is finally arriving, and it'll wrap up the series, promises HBO
This article is from Den Of Geek Us.
At long last, Deadwood is coming back from the dead just so it can be buried again. Creator David Milch has agreed to write a Deadwood reunion movie to wrap up the cancelled-too-soon series, according to HBO boss Casey Bloys.
“David is writing the script. We haven’t read it yet. I imagine it will be very good,” Bloys announced at a recent Television Critics Association panel.
If you've never had the pleasure of one of HBO's finest ever shows, Deadwood was set in a several-horse town in 1870s South Dakota where the language was as colourful as the sunsets and blood. Is "Deadwood" coming back from the dead?
The HBO series ran for three seasons and was canceled in 2006. At the time, there was talk of completing the drama with two movies, but nothing came of the matter (on a personal note: still mad about that).
Now, there are new rumblings that a movie might get made. Actor Garret Dillahunt (who played Jack McCall, then later Francis Wolcott) lit the first match on Twitter:
So uh....I'm hearing credible rumors about a #Deadwood movie. #Everybodypray
- Garret Dillahunt (@garretdillahunt) August 13, 2015 "What?! Please be true!" responded Twitter and the rest of the Internet.

The final episode of "Deadwood" aired nine years ago this month, and ever since the messy cancellation of one of the great dramas of all time, there have been rumors and wishcasting about the idea of a reunion movie. In fact, at the time the show ended prematurely, HBO tried to temper the bad publicity by declaring intentions to make two sequel movies, neither of which happened. When I interviewed David Milch a few years ago for "The Revolution Was Televised," it was not long after the latest attempt to bring his amazing cast back together had fallen apart. Recalling the initial struggles to reunite everyone, he said, "I thought there was a good chance that we would do the movie, but gradually, it was like sand. It washed away. I’d still love to do one.” Might he finally be getting that chance? Check out this tweet from Garret Dillahunt,...

If you were given a lineup of shows that have left a fingerprint on Justified, and asked to pick which series has had the biggest influence, the one many would point to would be Deadwood. Admittedly, the list of possible suspects is pretty slim, as the most widely known TV Western of recent years is the one set in space. But beyond just the starring presence of Timothy Olyphant, the greatest debt – really more of a hat-tip – Justified has always owed, particularly this season and episode, has been to David Milch’s short-lived but revered pioneer drama.
Aesthetically, the Old West of South Dakota and the new west of Kentucky wouldn’t pass for twins, and even dramatically, Deadwood and Justified have their significant contrasts. Many books have been written about Hollywood Westerns. After 45 years, the late William K. Everson’s “A Pictorial History of the Western Film” (The Citadel Press, 1969) remains one of the best: a coffee-table book with substance. Everson appropriately tips his sombrero to John Ford, John Wayne, Henry Hathaway, and Howard Hawks (with measured praise for “Red River”), and his comments on films spanning the history of the genre up to the end of the 1960s, from “The Great Train Robbery” (1903) to “The Wild Bunch” (1969), are incisive and thought-provoking. As a film scholar and preservationist, Everson was particularly knowledgeable about older and often obscure movies from the silent and early sound eras. Three of the classic titles he highlights are worthy of his approval and deserve to be better known than they are.

Although it only aired for three seasons, there is no doubt that Deadwood is one of the greatest TV shows ever created. For the unfamiliar, the hit television series created, produced and largely written by David Milch, is a historical drama set in the 1870s in Deadwood, South Dakota. The show features a large ensemble cast, and many historical figures appear as characters on the show—such as Seth Bullock, Al Swearengen, Wild Bill Hickok, Sol Star, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, George Crook, E. B. Farnum, Charlie Utter, Jack McCall, and George Hearst. Shakespearean in tone and thematically epic, Deadwood features some of the best dialogue ever written for the smalls screen. Milch used actual diaries and newspapers from 1870s Deadwood residents as reference points for characters, events, and the look and feel of the show. Deadwood received wide critical acclaim, particularly for Milch’s writing and Ian McShane’s co-lead performance,...

Over the last decade and a half, much has been made in critical circles about the “coming of age” of dramatic television programming. Since The Sopranos began to become a cultural touchstone, HBO has been a central part of that discussion, with some broadly suggesting that its most beloved dramas – particularly The Sopranos (1999-07), The Wire (2002-08), and Deadwood (2004-06) – began to outstrip the greatness of contemporary American film by bringing cinematic flair to projects with a necessarily much larger scope. While that contention is subjective, it does begin to suggest what separates these programs (as well as other revered non-pay-cable series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, WB/Upn 1997-03) from many of their contemporaries: with each series, to varying degrees, the influence of the series’ respective showrunners/creators is plainly evident. Buffy is consistently informed by Joss Whedon’s sense of pop-culture awareness and devotion to clear emotional stakes,...

A Thousand Words takes the art of silence to another level. Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) struggles to find the meaning of life. McCall has a beautiful wife (Kerry Washington), a baby son, a beautiful, artsy looking house complete with a lovely pool/padio-backyard. For a living, McCall says he is the best: he can sell anyone anything. He is the talker, the man to close the deal. When a deal comes to light that involves a Buddhist monk, or spiritual guru, I wasn.t certain which, a Dr. Sinja (played by Cliff Curtis), McCall tries his best talker.s talk, his best sales pitch, and thinks he has won. However, Sinja turns the tables on him: a Bodhi tree appears poolside.

It's almost painful to think of how funny Eddie Murphy used to be, or how good he was in films like 48 Hours, now 30 years old. His creative descent has been both gradual and marked, but it may have reached a low point with A Thousand Words. He's been this unfunny before, but he's never looked this unsure of himself, or second guessed his own appeal more. Even though the film sat in the vault for a number of years, it's doubtful that its release would have made sense at any stage of his career.
Murphy plays Jack McCall, the kind of motivated, ambitious professional that Hollywood is obsessed with teaching lessons in humility. While pursuing the new age figure Dr. Sinja (Cliff Curtis) for a book deal, McCall's life is disrupted by the sudden appearance of a mysterious tree in his backyard which sheds a leaf every time that McCall speaks.

Does Eddie Murphy actually have any range, or is it just an illusion created by a few early edgy roles and, later, a lot of CGI makeup and fat suits? In A Thousand Words, the comedian doesn’t do his usual thing of playing multiple parts (à la Dr. Doolittle or The Nutty Professor), but he does have to run the full gamut of shtick, as he is transformed from Über-con fident motormouth to hapless victim of karmic circumstance to earnest Changed Man™. But his performance feels so disingenuous, so forced, that an otherwise perfectly acceptable high-concept comedy comes crashing down around him.Murphy plays Jack McCall, a powerful book agent and neglectful family man who prides himself on his powers of coercion and his total lack of genuine interest in the product he pimps. Chicago – The movie business is a funny thing in that Everyone involved with “A Thousand Words” has moved on and yet there are studio executives who still want you to care enough to open your wallet. Who didn’t care before you? The writers who delivered once of the worst scripts in years, the director who proved that his pedestrian work on “Norbit” and “Meet Dave” was the pinnacle of his abilities, and the producers who let this cinematic crime get even more stale than when it was shot. (For a fun drinking game, count the dated jokes from “Chili’s Baby Back Ribs” to Britney Spears’ tabloid life in a film that was shot in 2008). Everyone involved left it behind. Why should you care? Only the most masochistic connoisseurs of the truly awful need check it out.

-- In the opening sequence of "A Thousand Words," Eddie Murphy starts with his back to the camera then turns abruptly to reveal a strip of duct tape over his mouth.
A very good idea, if the once hip fast-talker of "Beverly Hills Cop" is going to continue using hollow, stumbling comedies such as this as his mouthpiece to the world.
The notion of taking away motor-mouth Murphy's ability to spew words sounds like a bizarre filmmaking choice until you encounter the obnoxious clown he plays here, boorish literary agent and inattentive family man Jack McCall. He's so annoying you'll be aching for the moment the action comes around to that opening image when the duct tape gets slapped over Jack's mouth. That would be so he'll hold his tongue after a bodhi tree magically appears in his backyard and begins losing leaves each time he utters a word, and...

On Friday, the dreams of thousands (hundreds?) will come true when "John Carter" comes to the big screen. But will the film have enough strength to top the previous weekend's No. 1? Last Sunday, "The Lorax" surprised everyone by tallying a $70 million opening. (Don't underestimate the power of Dr. Seuss. Also, Taylor Swift!) To find out if Mars (erm, Barsoom) can hold off the rest of the competition, lets take a look at Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. Nationwide Releases "John Carter" What's the story: Based on the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs' series, "John Carter of Mars," "John Carter" is the first live-action feature film from Pixar vet Andrew Stanton ("Wall-e"). The movie follows John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), a Civil War soldier who gets mysteriously transported to Mars (it's called Barsoom in the story) and winds up in a battle to save its people. Willem Defoe co-stars as a Barsoomian named Tars Tarkas.

Eddie Murphy.s next bit of comedy will hopefully prove to be much funnier than Tower Heist. While amusing at times, the humor in the Brett Ratner directed film seemed spread a bit too thin across its promising cast. A Thousand Words seems to be entirely Murphy-focused, complete with a goofy scenario in which his character is entrapped. A Thousand Words puts Murphy back in the hands of Norbit and Meet Dave director Brian Robbins. The story follows Murphy.s character Jack McCall, a literary agent who should know a thing or two about the value of words. If not, he.s about to learn when he finds his life tethered to a magical Bodhi tree in his backyard. With each word he speaks, a leaf falls from the tree and as he soon learns, when the last leaf falls, the tree dies and he goes with it. From what...

We have an exclusive look at the new poster for the Eddie Murphy comedy A Thousand Words for you this morning to welcome you to the week. Hello.
The concept is as high as they get, Eddie Murphy’s character is a motormouth who, through some madcap contrivance or other, finds himself with a finite number of words to say before he dies. Think of a verbal Five Finger Death Punch from Kill Bill and you’re sort of there. With only a thousand words left to him before he dies there is bound to be some morality thrown in with all the Murphyesque swearing and related hijinks.
This film has been finished for over a year, and is out in cinemas in early April, and has Murphy reuniting with his Norbit and Meet Dave director Brian Robbins and the film was written by Steve Koren whose most recent work...

After joining forces for 1997′s The Saint, Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue are planning on reuniting for another movie. According to Moviehole, this time the dramatic duo is teaming up for a new western titled The Hard Ride.
Thadd Turner is writing and directing the project, which tells the story of “Wild Bill Hickok’s run-in with gambler Johnny Varnes in Deadwood.” Kilmer will play Varnes, who “allegedly paid off Jack McCall to kill ‘Wild Bill’”. Shue is set to play Agnes Lake, the late wife of Hickok. Ryan Merriman (Final Destination 3), Mark Rolston (Aliens), Wes Studi (Dances With Wolves) and Christopher Atkins have also been cast in the film.
We haven’t seen much from Turner in the ways of directing, his only other credits include the 2009 short Kids in the Yard as well as various acting and stunt jobs over the years. He does have the action...

The new trailer for A Thousand Words has Eddie Murphy facing a unique challenge. He has a gift for gab but he has to learn silence can be golden before his time runs outs.
In A Thousand Words, Murphy plays fast-talking literary agent Jack McCall. Jack has a golden tongue but he sometimes often stretches the truth a bit lies. After crossing paths with New Age guru Dr. Sinja, he’s forced to change how he does things when a magical Bodhi tree pops up in his backyard. Every time Jack speaks, a leaf falls from the tree. What happens when all the leaves are gone? Well, he supposedly dies but we know that won’t happen.
Maybe it’s just me but I think A Thousand Words might be a little behind the times. We’ve seen a similar set-up in Jim Carrey’s Liar, Liar, and it’s...

Back in April we learned that Paramount Pictures was planning to finally release Eddie Murphy's "A Thousand Words" comedy in 2012 after sitting on the film for over three years. The reason for this long delay is the failure of Murphy's "Norbit." Now comes word that the film, directed by Brian Robbins (Norbit, Meet Dave), is scheduled to hit theaters on March 23rd, 2012. And to promote the release, the studio has unveiled a trailer. Check it out below. Unfortunately, "A Thousand Words" will further hurt Murphy, who just stepped down from hosting the Oscars and saw "Tower Heist" fail at the box office. Plot: Jack McCall (Murphy) is a fast-talking literary agent who can close any deal, any time, any way. He has set his sights on New Age guru Dr. Sinja for his own selfish purposes.
