Lion Forge Entertainment and Penguin Young Readers have struck a new TV and film development pact to produce adaptations of several children’s books.
The deal will allow the entertainment company to develop and adapt a slate of titles from the division of Penguin Random House — and one of the industry’s leading children’s book publishers — into animated and/or live action properties. Titles currently selected for development span readership ages three to 12 and come from Penguin Workshop, Grosset & Dunlap and Viking.
“The creative team at Penguin Young Readers are as passionate about storytelling and world-building as we are at Lion Forge,” said Lion Forge Entertainment president and chief content officer Stephanie Sperber. “Their publishing list aligns perfectly with the content we bring to market, and we are eager to develop these books for kids and family audiences globally.”

Ever wonder what it would be like if Gandhi met up with Benjamin Franklin? Or if Galileo sat down for a chat with Queen Elizabeth? What about a dance-off between Joan of Arc and Albert Einstein?
All those things and more can be found on Netflix’s new kids and family series “The Who Was? Show,” which launched on the streaming service on Friday.
The sketch comedy series is based on the popular “Who Was?” children’s books published by Penguin Random House and features a who’s who of comedy producers and writers who can boast 900 Emmys between them, according to executive producer-showrunner Richard Korson and writer-executive producer Brian McCann (“Conan”), who recently chatted with Variety about the silly, yet slyly educational show.

If we told young Scotty Smalls that Brett Gardner played him in a re-creation of a scene from The Sandlot, he probably wouldn't know who the guy is. And not just because he's a character from half a century ago. "Smalls" didn't even know who Babe Ruth was, and if the movie took place today, he surely wouldn't know any of the current roster of the New York Yankees. Of course, in the movie, that little ignorant kid grows up to be a very knowlegeable sportscaster covering Major League Baseball. He has to know who Gardner is, as well as his fellow Yankees Jacoby Ellsbury, Dellin Betances, C.C. Sabathia, Chase Headley, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann. And he'd get a big kick out of seeing those players redoing the memorable Babe Ruth scene from...

Scotty Smalls sure isn't small anymore! That's because a fully grown New York Yankee (outfielder Brett Gardner) is portraying The Sandlot's star! Gardner and teammates Jacoby Ellsbury, Dellin Betances, C.C. Sabathia, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann (as the Sandlot kids, of course) recreated a scene from the iconic 1993 baseball movie for Mlb.com. The fellas' acting chops aren't quite on par with their athletic talents, but what they lack in theatrical skill they more than make up for in charm. In this particular scene, Smalls (Gardner) swipes a baseball from his stepfather's office hoping to play with the other boys in his new neighborhood. He doesn't know, though, this particular ball is...

David M. Evans' The Sandlot is easily one of the most beloved baseball films of the modern era, and strangely enough, it's now is probably a movie that today's Major League players grew up watching. Certainly adding credence to that idea is this new video recorded by members of the New York Yankees, who recreated one of the feature's best scenes. As a fan of the New York Mets, it's kind of in my blood to feel a tad bit of scorn for the Yankees at all times, but credit is due to Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury, Cc Sabathia, Brian McCann, Didi Gregorius and the rest of the players in this video for making a funny, fitting tribute to The Sandlot. The short was posted by Mlb.com, and while it exists as promotion for the upcoming season of Yankee baseball, it still feels like something that team did...

Derek Jeter ended his professional baseball career on a high note, leading his Yankees to a victory in his final Mlb game.
Playing against their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees won 9-5 with Jeter hitting his 3,465th base hit -- the most in the franchise's history — and earning his 1,311th Rbi. After an emotional farewell in New York last week, the 40-year-old shortstop was on the lineup for his final game as a designated hitter. After he reached base on a single, he was replaced by pinch runner Brian McCann. Jeter hugged the Red Sox pitcher and then tipped his helmet to his Yankees crowd before going back into the dugout.

The ball, marked and numbered for the occasion, bounced high off the dirt and down the third-base line, where a rookie who was 4 years-old when Derek Jeter made his major league debut leaped into the air to attempt a bare-handed play. It went off of his palm and onto the grass, and by that time Jeter was safe at first with hit No. 3,465 - sixth all-time, and the most in franchise history - along with the 1,311th Rbi of a career in which he established himself as the New York Yankees' consummate captain and, for two decades, the face of baseball.

The trailers are starting to make the rounds for the digested, regurgitated and over-incubated adaptation of Michael Lewis' best-selling baseball novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Brad Pitt pushed for a film version of the novel, which highlights the change in direction of the Oakland Athletics under General Manager Billy Beane. The San Francisco Bay Area franchise was one of the highest spending clubs in the early parts of the 90s, but after owner Walter Haas died in 1995, the new ownership group slashed payroll and cut operating costs (apparently this sort of behavior isn't limited to the New York Knights or Charlie Sheen's Cleveland Indians).
Beane's strategies expanded upon statistical analysis with objective studies and regressions analysis and all sorts of mathematical approaches, embracing the field of "Sabermetrics". By developing a different idea about how baseball games were won, and a different idea about which...

Chicago – Reliving the 1980s is what Topher Grace, ironically known for “That ‘70s Show,” set out to do with the story line for his new film, “Take Me Home Tonight.” Comedian Demetri Martin has a supporting role in that film.
Grace developed the original story, about a post-collegiate guy named Matt working in a video store, trying to figure out the next stage of his life. When he encounters a high school crush named Tori (Teresa Palmer), he makes up a scenario where he works for the investment film Goldman Sachs. He then catches up to an actual Goldman Sachs employee, played by Demetri Martin, to back up his story. The rest of the movie is basically about Matt working through the deception.

The streak is over! On Tuesday night (July 13), the National League broke an incredible streak of futility and topped the American League by a score of 3-1 in the 2010 Major League Baseball All Star Game. In winning the Midsummer Classic, the National League will now have home field advantage at this year's World Series. Though Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann walked away as the Mvp of the game (his three-run double represented all of the offense for his squad), there were also great performances from New York Mets third baseman David Wright, Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd and pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez, David Price, Matt Capps and Jonathan Broxton. It was an excellent game, especially if you like pitching, as there were a tremendous number of strikeouts spread across nine innings.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.
