A colourless rendition of George Miller’s action symphony was rumoured back in 2015, but it wasn’t until the end of last year that it would become a reality. Now released in cinemas for one day only, and coming to Blu-ray soon after, the “Black & Chrome” edition – editorially untouched but carefully re-graded – is more than a simple twiddling of knobs.
Monochrome may seem like a strange choice for a sun-saturated epic so rich and, well, colourful in its depiction of desolation. And while it may not become the default viewing experience like, say, Frank Darabont’s drained version of The Mist, it is a fascinating new perspective. It is also a good excuse to re-watch – and re-examine the underlying themes of – the greatest action movie of the decade so far.

The Art of Mad Max: Fury Road author Abbie Bernstein has put together concept art, production stills, behind-the-scenes photos, cast and crew interviews, and more, from George Miller’s action masterpiece. It was all drawn by Brendan McCarthy, Peter Pound, and Mark Sexton; the art dates back to the mid-’90s, before a script had been written for the film! The book provides an amazing glimpse behind-the-scenes on one of the most visually stunning productions in decades.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet for some reason, you can check out my review here. The franchise continues with the Road Warrior becoming swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. Seeking escape from the tyranny of Immortan Joe, what follows is a desert rock concert full of amazing violence and redemption.

Cannes — Awards season is no stranger to Cannes. From "Amour" to "The Tree of Life" to "No Country For Old Men" to "The Pianist" to "The Piano," every year there seems to be a player or two that pokes its head out from the crowded Croisette and into Oscar's waiting arms. This year's potential players may not include a true Best Picture contender, but they are evidence enough that the festival's presence will be felt throughout the upcoming campaign. Before you start second guessing which films have a shot and which don't, remember the actions of this year's Hollywood-influenced competition jury. The Coen brothers, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller and the Guillermo Del Toro, among others, awarded some interesting prizes that will absolutely affect the race. The critical kudos are important, too (as are those of us who cover the beat on a regular basis and took in this year's slate...

Who would've thought, even after the amazing first trailer was released, that not only would George Miller’s return to the wasteland (and live-action filmmaking), “Mad Max: Fury Road,” be the most highly regarded and heavily praised blockbuster of the year but also be one of the better reviewed films of the year (at least so far), period. With everyone’s favorite film heading into its second weekend at the box office, let’s keep this love train rolling by taking a peek at the first of “Fury Road” comic book prelude series. It’s widely known now that with “Fury Road” being delayed for so long, Miller and his writers Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris were able to devise backstories for every character of their slick and efficient film, even if it was something that wouldn’t be discussed or even seen on screen. Fortunately for fans of the film,...

Today’s Zen question: Can a movie be called a sequel even if it has a cast that hadn’t been in the earlier three movies but it stars the same lead character and the worldview remains consistent with those movies and all four movies have the same director, but the last one was released 30 years ago?
Today’s Zen answer: Who the hell cares? Mad Max: Fury Road is an absolutely terrific movie.
I saw this epic with my ComicMix comrade Martha Thomases and our mutual pal, Michigan’s own Penelope Ruchman. It was the beginning of an amazingly astonishing pop entertainment day; I’d give you those details but you know how I absolutely hate to name-drop. I won’t speak for Martha or Penny except to say that Martha enjoyed the movie at least as much as I did and I believe Penny liked it even more.

Subject to how strongly Mad Max: Fury Road performs globally, George Miller says the fifth edition of his action franchise will be called Mad Max: The Wasteland.
The director has revealed there are two other scripts, one a novella, the other what he describes as an .an in-between birth..
In the meantime, the prequel stories of the principle characters of Fury Road will be chronicled in a series of comics from DC Entertainment's Vertigo Comics.
The first issue, which launches in the Us this week, explores the earlier days of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and Nux (Nicholas Hoult), one of Joe's loyal War Boys.
The saga of how Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa met the Immortan's five wives will be released on June 17.
Two further chapters focusing on Tom Hardy.s Max Rockatansky and a hazardous trip to Gastown and Thunderdome Plus will come out on July 8 and...

Mad Max: Fury Road
Written by George Miller, Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris
Directed by George Miller
Australia/United States, 2015
Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) stands atop a sandy, rocky hill overlooking the unforgiving Australian desert, still haunted by the memories of his deceased family. Having perfected what it means to fend for one’s self, his ability to survive is seriously put to the test when kidnaped by a band of sickly, youthful warriors belonging to a secluded but powerful community run by Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne. They bring him back to their dungeons, torture him, and preserve him as a ‘blood bag’, a source of energy to help the citadel’s fighters, plagued by an unknown illness. Immortan Joe’s grasp on the people is simple: he controls the water supply. But not everyone is willing to simply abide by his tyrannical rule. Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a scarred...

'Mad Max: Fury Road' poster with Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky 'Mad Max: Fury Road' review: 'A good movie on its own terms' Mad Max, the first feature film of director George Miller and the second for the then 23-year-old Mel Gibson, premiered in North America in Feb. 1980. I was 17 years old, crazy about cars and revenge movies, and generally ripe for the picking. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, followed in 1981, deepening devotees' affection for the character and his car. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), was the third film in the series and was equally anticipated, though it has worn over time. It co-starred the Silent Dancer herself, Tina Turner, and her current hit of the day, the name of which I cannot remember and don't want to look.* I saw each of them at the time of its respective North American release and relished in them all. Yet I...

Chicago – It’s “the greatest action movie ever made,” so says the television commercials (which means it’s true). And it’s buoyed by other quotables galore including “what a lovely day!,” “from mastermind George Miller,” “pulse pounding,” “heart wrenching” and “teeth grinding”.
While these words are actually true, though, the film doesn’t need them to sell it.
Though a cinematic “thrill ride” is often marketing speak – sometimes rightfully earned and oftentimes overhyped – this $150 million film sells itself because it really is exactly that. Gritty, dirty, mad and fun as hell, you can’t get much more of a thrill ride than “Mad Max: Fury Road”. And there’s no other filmmaker for the job than George Miller yet again, who not only proves he’s still got it but reminds us that he’s more than just the “Mad Max” mastermind. He’s also the creator of the...

We Do need another hero.
But it's not an angry chap called Max. Instead, Charlize Theron's honourable heroine Furiosa dominates a bonkers and brilliant action movie that's relentlessly thrilling and full of surprises.
It's been three decades since Mel Gibson's policeman turned vigilante Max Rockatansky left the Thunderdome in the franchise's third instalment. The sands of time and pixels of TMZ have removed the leading star from the equation, but the infectious attitude and wild nature of this new incarnation are still the same thanks to co-creator, writer and director George Miller remaining at the helm.

Chicago – While “Mad Max: Fury Road” isn’t quite in the same league as director George Miller’s masterpiece “The Road Warrior,” it’s learned all the right lessons from that action classic. It’s a cinematic adrenaline machine that puts the pedal to the metal and rarely lets up.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
There’s a similar post-apocalyptic setting this time around with the deserts of Namibia subbing for the Australian outback. Tom Hardy plays Max, introduced as a shaggy-haired loner eating a live lizard and living by survival instincts alone. But he’s really a supporting player in his own movie. Charlize Theron is the star of this show as a renegade one armed war general who helps a pack of women escape from an evil warlord who’s using them as his personal baby making machines.

Mad Max: Fury Road
Written by George Miller, Brendan McCarthy & Nick Lathouris
Directed by George Miller
Australia|USA, 2015
Audacious and percussive, Mad Max: Fury Road is the action film of the decade thus far. The sheer volume of arresting visuals and surreal concoctions in every frame of George Miller’s return to Max is almost staggering. It’s an embarrassment of hyperkinetic riches; a gleeful celebration of nihilistic debauchery that somehow manages to deliver a powerful message of hope and redemption. More at home than ever before, Max has returned to raise the bar for action films.
We know Max. We met him 35 years ago and he’s still the same brooding, tormented soul he’s always been. As played by Tom Hardy, Max is almost monosyllabic. He grunts and gestures like some prehistoric beast; language isn’t necessary to convey the necessities of survival. “My world is fire and blood,...

There’s no way to get around this fact…”Mad” Max Rockatansky is coming back to the public consciousness. In just a few days, audiences are going to be blown away by Mad Max: Fury Road, the latest installment in/reboot of George Miller’s iconic franchise. This is the fourth time that writer/director Miller has looked at the post apocalyptic landscape through the experiences of Max, this time played by Tom Hardy instead of Mel Gibson. Here, with Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller has delivered what my colleagues are calling the best movies of the year so far. I won’t go that far, but it’s certainly one of the better action flick in some time…and yes, it’s essentially a two hour chase film, as has been the rumor. Plot isn’t a huge deal in this film, but it does work to mostly establish...

If filmmaking is still considered a young man’s game, apparently no one has told prolific Australian director George Miller. At age 70, he’s about to unleash quite possibly the craziest practical action masterpiece you’ll see in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Daily Dead recently had the distinct pleasure of attending a special screening for the latest chapter in the Max Rockatansky saga that also featured a Q&A afterwards with Miller and our moderator for the evening, Edgar Wright. The duo chatted about the filmmaking business, the risks and rewards of doing practical stunts, Miller’s return to live action filmmaking for Fury Road and so much more. Here are some of the highlights from the pair’s highly engaging chat.
Miller on whether or not he had always envisioned Mad Max as a franchise: "I didn’t; I thought I was done on the first one, but then the sequel came around.

After 30 years, iconic antihero Max Rockatansky is back on the big screen in a huge way with George Miller’s post-apocalyptic epic, Mad Max: Fury Road. This time around, Tom Hardy is donning the leather jacket and he’s joined by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne (who portrayed the villain, Toecutter, in the original film), and more for another mind-blowing, octane-fueled adventure that’s truly unlike anything you’re likely to see in theaters this summer. If Miller set the bar for modern action films with Mad Max in 1979, with Fury Road he completely obliterates it and creates an entirely new cinematic standard all his own.
Fury Road transports us deep into the future where water is scarce, fuel sources are controlled by few and anyone who hasn’t already been taken hostage by one of the remaining Warlords scattered throughout the desolate Wastelands has a proverbial target on their back.

If "Mad Max" is "A Fistful Of Dollars" and "The Road Warrior" is "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly," then clearly "Fury Road" is George Miller's "Once Upon A Time In The West," the moment when his movies move from the archetypical to the profound. It seems impossible that George Miller has been away from live-action for 17 years. Then again, nothing about George Miller's career has ever really fit into any typical model. I always think of him as part of the Class of '82, the directors whose work really crystallized in what I maintain is the greatest geek movie line-up of all time. Most of those guys came out of the system, either through the Roger Corman training program or moving from TV to movies, trained at southern California film schools so they all had similar skill sets. Miller was different, though. He was never really one of them.

The summer is here, and with the arrival of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Jurassic World right around the corner, the heat is really kicking up. Still, no movie has had me as excited as Mad Max: Fury Road.
The trailers have been insane, and no movie in years has sold me so quickly with the theory of wild, adrenaline-rush like this one.
You’ve seen plenty in the trailers to get your mind racing, but the new set of images really give you a lot of information (I think) about how cool this really might be.
Just take a look at this one –
courtesy Warner Bros.
Sure, you’ve seen the idea in the trailer, but just the sheer insanity of everything in this image. If this movie doesn’t turn out to be the most fun of the year, that in itself will be a feat.

"You're not really in a movie, you're in George's head." In a new featurette from Warner Bros., Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and other members of the cast and crew of Mad Max: Fury Road reflect on what it was like to be a part of the latest grand vision from filmmaker George Miller.

We’re halfway through April dear readers, and that means the summer movie season is closer than ever. On this week’s Trailer Trashin’, I take another look at one of my most anticipated films of the year, George Miller’s action extravaganza Mad Max: Fury Road.
Premise: In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, loner “Mad” Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) meets Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman who wishes to cross the desert. Captured by the forces of warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), Max’s only hope for freedom is Furiosa, who is on the run from Immortan Joe because she stole his most precious resource: five young women who have been kept as objects and whose purpose is to mother the next generation. They need Max’s knowledge of the desert to safely cross it and escape the madness of their enemies.
My take: The trailer kicks off with Max, who...

"The Warrior Of The Wasteland! The Ayatollah of rock and rollah!" When I heard myself bellow both of those phrases into a mic on the stage of the Paramount theater in Austin, I got this weird out-of-body feeling that sometimes happens when I'm doing something that younger film nerd me would have freaked out about completely. In this particular case, I was bringing George Miller to the stage to discuss his classic 1982 film, "The Road Warrior," known around the world by its more-accurate-but-less-poetic title, "Mad Max 2." It is safe to say that I adore George Miller. I think he's one of the most remarkable filmmakers to emerge in the '80s, and one of the things that I find most amazing about the "Fury Road" footage we've seen so far is that it feels like he hasn't lost a step. If anything, he's taking all of his experience and then...
