Dark Sky Films is set to release Dennis Bartok’s directorial debut, Nails, today on VOD, which features The Descent’s Shauna Macdonald doing battle with an evil entity that is stalking her in the hospital after she’s been laid up following a horrific accident that leaves her trapped in her own bed, unable to communicate with the outside world. Daily Dead recently spoke to Bartok about the project, and he discussed how his own experiences inspired the story of Nails, what it was like to collaborate with Macdonald, and more.
Great to speak with you, Dennis. Nails almost feels like a fairy tale meets an X-Files episode, particularly this character of Donnie Pfaster, who was this guy who collected fingernails. I just thought it was kind of interesting the way that you rounded out the mythology of the character of Nails with that, and then it all played...

Faith’s world is turned upside down when she finds out her father is dying. When the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young becomes her field hockey coach, Faith finds a compassionate spirit and much-needed mother figure. Little does she know that Sissy is the head of a centuries-old witches’ coven using the fruit of an ancient cherry tree in a secret ritual that restores life. And soon Sissy has enticed Faith into making a fateful bargain that is about to change everything…

Witchcraft captures an obscure subgenre of horror that’s rarely represented through similar methods (look at such varying titles as All Cheerleaders Die/The Witch/Lords Of Salem). Halloween imagery always includes green-faced, cackling witches, broomsticks and all, but films tend to focus more on their cultish behavior.
Ireland’s latest genre effort, Cherry Tree, is another such film about dark magic and satanic worship, yet even with Clive-Barker-inspired visuals, these deceiving looks are hollow to the core. It’s as terrifying as something like The Moth Diaries or Embrace Of The Vampire, which of course means there’s no terror at all – just centipedes, witches, and a fixation on cherries that’ll have your empty tummy rumbling in dissatisfaction.
Naomi Battrick stars as Faith, a misunderstood loner who struggles with her social status. Matters only worsen when she learns that her already ailing father, Sean (Sam Hazeldine), has received...

A new trailer has arrived for Harbinger Down ahead of the film's release tomorrow. Also in this round-up: a new teaser trailer for Cherry Tree, The Barn Indiegogo campaign, and DVD release details for horror-thriller Run, Hide, Die.
Harbinger Down: "A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without a mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for three decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

The pairing of director David Keating and writer Brendan McCarthy first made a splash a few years back with the release of the Hammer horror Wake Wood and the pair are at it again, this time with the witchy horror Cherry Tree.
The movie stars Naomi Battrick as Faith, a young woman who finds out her father is dying. Desperate to save him, she strikes a deal with the leader of a coven who offers to save Faith's dad in exchange for a baby. Faith agrees and suddenly finds herself pregnant and carrying a child that is growing faster than normal.

Ireland, 2015
Directed by: Corin Hardy
Genre: Gaelic Gothic
Alright guys and ghouls, strap yourselves in. I’m gauging expectations here, so if we`re to bump occular uglies, I need you to understand that I’m not going to spend the night and there will be no cuddling after. Fantasia 2015 is in town and I’m buried, face deep. Late with reviews, late with screenings, early with heart palpitations. Let’s get right to it shall we?
Now, I don’t know what the topic de rigueur has been at your last family get together. Frankly, I don’t want to know. The creepy thing is that I’m pretty sure it involved 1) discussion regarding a recent mortgage refinancing that go-getter Frank was lucky to get, 2) that new health insurance product snagged by Bubbie, 3) teenage pregnancies perhaps? or even 4) That strange smell coming from neighbor George.
One thing’s for certain though,...

Cherry Tree is another film coming this way via Ireland. Irish director David Keating is helming this feature, along with writer Brendan McCarthy. The film begins with a struggling family and a witches' coven. The film stars Anna Walton (Mutant Chronicles), Sam Hazeldine (The Monuments Men), Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson. The film's first poster is here. At the heart of the film grows a cherry tree. This cherry tree can help Faith's (Battrick) father, who is slowly dying. The tree's powers promise rebirth, but Faith must make a sacrifice, first. The film's poster shows a witch's gnarled hand and fruit from the tree. Reminiscent of an ancient biblical tale, evil tempts a young woman to eat from a forbidden tree. From the creators of Wake Wood, Cherry Tree will be released later this year! Release Date: 2014. Director: David Keating. Writer: Brendan McCarthy. Cast: Anna Walton, Sam Hazeldine, Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson.

The highlight of the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel Saturday wasn't "Batman vs. Superman." It was George Miller's return to Max Max, "Fury Road." And Warner marketing didn't miss a trick, releasing the trailer for the post-apocalyptic actioner and posters the next day. Here you go. When I interviewed Mel Gibson in Karlovy Vary (here), he told me that George Miller had initially considered casting him in "Fury Road" some years ago, but finally he was too old and they didn't see a need for a cameo. But new Max Rockatansky Tom Hardy did meet with Gibson to get his blessing, and he was impressed by the actor. Gibson says that Miller was trying to outdo not only his original trilogy, which reached its peak with the hugely influential "Road Warrior," but Quentin Tarantino in action mode. Miller wanted this movie--written by Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris-- to never stop moving,...

Brendan McCarthy has revealed concept art for a Wind in the Willows film.
The movie based on Kenneth Grahame's childhood classics was put in development in the mid-'90s before it was abandoned.
McCarthy provided development art for the film, which was to be directed by his Jim Henson's The Storyteller collaborator Steve Barron.
"These have been gathering dust, unseen, for twenty years... it's good to give an airing to what could have been a decent British film, from that 'handmade' era," the artist wrote on Facebook (via Robot 6).
"Sadly I have lost most of my film visuals material. I never thought it very important... I always considered my comics work to be the real deal...
"I noticed directors like to be able to show stuff to producers and investors before things are shot... It keeps them calm!"
The project was cancelled when it was eclipsed by a Wind...

Somewhere up in the hills is a group of true believers - believers in God and sin testing themselves to show their purity. Old fashioned snake handlers, with no love or tolerance for the outside world. Lonely, secretive bartender Charlotte's (Emma Greenwell) sister has disappeared up there somewhere, though, and she and her reluctant companion (Brendan McCarthy) are going to find out where.
Fans of the Butcher Brothers could certainly expect to be forgiven for expecting a blood-soaked romp of crazy cult killing and mad rituals out such a set up. For his newest film, co-writer/director Mitchell Altieri (one half of the Butcher Brother team) has gone a far more meditative, character driven route, however. Stitches stars popular British comedian Ross Noble and Tommy Knight of "Doctor Who" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures" and is directed by Conor McMahon (Disturbed, Dead Meat). Stitches falls victim to a fatal party mishap at the hands of a group of particularly nasty children. Years later the group of now teenagers attend a party at which Stitches is the uninvited guest of honor, returning to avenge his untimely death.
