Deer Tick have announced their new album, Emotional Contracts, out June 16th as their debut on Ato Records. They’ve also expanded their 2023 tour (grab tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Forgiving Ties,” alongside album track “The Real Thing.”
Emotional Contracts was produced by Dave Fridmann, who is best known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Sleater-Kinney. The 10-track LP includes a feature from Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and background vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, Vanessa Carlton, Kam Franklin, Angela Miller, and Sheree Smith.
In a statement, vocalist/guitarist John McCauley described letting loose during the recording process. “This time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit,” he said. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new direction.

As though the double helping of Deer Tick Vol. 1 & 2 wasn’t ambitious enough, Deer Tick is back with a fresh album of bonus tracks and alternate takes from 2017’s dual LP titled Mayonnaise, including a jangling cover of George Harrison’s “Run of the Mill.”
Originally released on the former Beatles’ solo debut, 1970’s All Things Must Pass — an even more sprawling triple LP — “Run of the Mill” gets a thoughtful, straightforward reading from the Providence, Rhode Island, ensemble, with a wall of layered guitars and a slightly pained vocal from Dennis Ryan.

The rumors came true in the final hour of Cal Jam on Saturday: Dave Grohl, back behind the drum kit, closed the second year of his annual rock festival with a six-song Nirvana reunion, including survivors Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, briefly reviving the classic grunge sound and attitude of one of the great acts of rock & roll.
The short set came at the end of a typically explosive and euphoric Foo Fighters performance, which charted 25 years of the massively successful band that Grohl built in 1995 after the sudden end...

As strongly hinted, Foo Fighters staged a Nirvana reunion to close out their Cal Jam as Dave Grohl and Pat Smear reconnected with Krist Novoselic and enlisted Deer Tick’s John McCauley and Joan Jett for a six-song set during the encore.
Both McCauley and Jett served as guest vocalists when the surviving Nirvana members performed together to celebrate the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Bands composed of people from other awesome bands is always a good idea in my book. Diamond Rugs, is a bevy of indie rockers from The Black Lips, Deer Tick, Los Lobos and Six Finger Satellite. The line up includes, John McCauley, Ian Saint Pe, Hardy Morris, Steve Berlin, Robbie Crowell, and Bryan Dufresne. They graced the ears of many angsty hipsters in 2012 with their eponymous debut album. It was any punk loving drunk kid wants to hear. Their first album was a fun and simple (in the best way). “We turned down a million dollars to make a song for one of the Twilight movies,” says John McCauley, the front man for indie rockers Deer Tick. “Those movies are terrible,” mutters keyboardist Rob Crowell, lolling on a couch in a plush townhouse in Clinton Hill, a giant Sour Patch Kid–shaped neon light hanging on the wall behind him. On this late afternoon in December, McCauley and his bandmates are in New York to play a string of six consecutive sold-out shows at Brooklyn Bowl—a celebration of Deer Tick’s decade together. A documentary is being filmed to memorialize the milestone, and the following night, New Year’s Eve, they’ll be joined onstage by Stevie Nicks for a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon.” It’s all evidence that even though Deer Tick has never quite made it big, they’ve done all right. Nashville, Tenn. — When Dan Auerbach moved from Ohio to Music City, he found a local rock `n' roll scene populated with bands that not only like each other, but also work toward a greater good. The Black Keys guitarist sees it as an uncommon harmony.
"It's really pretty cool and it's very much its own thing," Auerbach said. "There doesn't seem to be too much ego involved, which is surprising. I have been a fan of the “animal attack” sub genre since I was a very young boy, I vividly remember staying up until the sun rose watching weekend b-movie marathons and being extra excited when it was going to be a buffet of animal attack flicks. From killer bees to bloodthirsty whales, the genre has a never-ending cast of potential species to choose from. I felt it was only natural that I start this on going look at the genre with the very first animal attack film I remember seeing as a child, the 1976 classic John McCauley (Deadly Intruder) Rattlers.
The movie revolves around a herpetologist that has been called in to investigate a series of vicious rattlesnake attacks and his photographer. Soon the duo discovers the military’s disposal of a top-secret nerve gas may be the root of the snakes strange behavior.

Deer Tick hit Conan O’Brien’s show last night to perform “Funny Word,” which comes off our 15th Best Album of the Year Divine Providence. The track is a sloppy rocker that left frontman John McCauley telling the late-night host: “Let’s go get a beer.” Or maybe he was just announcing another single for his notoriously party-heavy band.

Deer Tick’s singer-songwriter John McCauley is obsessed with the regular young-man stuff—drinking, fighting, fucking, puking, sleeping, usually in that order—but on Divine Providence, it all comes out sounding like love songs. The object of McCauley’s affection is The Replacements; specifically, Paul Westerberg’s patented sensitive-asshole routine. “We’re full-grown men, but we act like kids,” McCauley bellows on “The Bump,” over a piss-drunk blues stomp that apes the spontaneous cacophony of Hootenanny’s infamous opening track. While the spirit is there, the sentiment is a little on the nose; at its weakest, like on the one-note ...

I am a huge fan of all three groups so anticipation for the collaboration was high, which can sometimes be a bad thing. John McCauley actually told me about Middle Brother when I interviewed Deer Tick well ...

A compendium of some of the best, young roots-rock songwriters to emerge in the last several years, Middle Brother pools the considerable talents of John McCauley of Deer Tick, Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. Typical for a “supergroup,” Middle Brother sounds more like a collection of strong musical personalities crowded into the same space than an actual band on its charmingly ragged, self-titled debut. McCauley is the craggy one, showing a sentimental soul and a drunkard’s disposition on the affecting album-opener “Daydreaming,” where the sound of a couple making love next door underlines his ...

Most of the music on Deer Tick’s third album, The Black Dirt Sessions, was recorded back in 2008, during the sessions for the rollicking Born On Flag Day, but it’d be a mistake to think of these songs as leftovers. Flag Day saw Deer Tick singer-songwriter John McCauley capitalizing on the buzz from the band’s first album by making a flat-out country-rock record, while The Black Dirt Sessions’ tracks are simpler and shaggier, even though Deer Tick has re-worked them some since ’08. Songs like the loping “Choir Of Angels” and the circular “The Sad Sun” find ...

The supergroup tentatively known as Mg&V have changed their name to Middle Brother. John McCauley of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit -- whom I've also heard called the "Monsters of Fuck" (not to be confused with the "Monsters of Folk") -- played their debut show at SXSW this year.
Their self-titled debut, recorded last fall in Nashville, will be released March 1, 2011 on Partisan Records. Here's Middle Brother performing the first track off the record, the sweet confessional ballad, "Daydreaming."
More Middle Brother (as Mg&V) from SXSW here.

Every once in a while you get lucky. Right place, right night, right band. That was the case at Los Angeles' El Rey Theate for me and a few hundred other fans of Rhode Island-based band Deer Tick.
Known for their raucous live sets the Tick did not disappoint, treating the La audience to a ragged and, at times, beautiful live performance of songs from their three albums. While some bands just play their songs live, trying to sound as close to the recorded version as possible, John McCauley & Co. fearlessly re-arranged and re-worked many of their best ...

You've heard of the Monsters of Folk, but you may not have been acquainted yet with the "Monsters of Fuck," as many have dubbed the supergroup, Mg&V. The band gets the name from John McCauley of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit.
They made their debut together this year at SXSW (each of the three full time bands were there too). Deer Tick played a show last week at Webster Hall in New York, before heading off on a European tour, and fellow Mg&V bandmate, Matt Vasquez, opened. He also sat in with Deer Tick and a few Mg&V covers got thrown down [Brooklyn Vegan]. It reminded me of this exclusive performance of Mg&V we shot back in Austin. Check it out:...

Intimations of mortality After two albums of wily, adolescent country, Rhode Island’s Deer Tick hits adulthood—and all the heartbreak and fear of mortality that comes with it—hard on these ragged, shadowy ballads. John McCauley III’s fiberglass croak couldn’t sound further from Neil Young’s whimper, but The Black Dirt Sessions is this band’s After the Goldrush, stuffed with devastating songs laid bare by weathered, redemption-seeking renegades. In the brooding “Twenty Miles,” McCauley howls, “If you’ve lost your way, I’m seeing you through” with my-time-here-is-limited angst; crawling piano dirge “Goodbye, Dear Friend” is hauntingly intimate (“You carry on . in the unmade...

It’s hard to surprise people when putting together a list of the best slasher movies and, in the interest of doing so, I thought I’d exclude all the genre mainstays from the list. This list doesn’t necessarily represent the “ten best”, but rather some of the slasher subgenre’s more ‘overlooked’ offerings.
10. The Mutilator (1985)
It can be argued that this film’s greatest asset is its amazing tag line (By Pick, By Sword, By Axe, Bye Bye!), but that’s doing a bit of disservice to director Buddy Cooper’s only attempt to run with the slasher big dogs.
First we’ve got one of the most preposterous killer motivations in the subgenre: a child, cleaning his father’s gun in an attempt to gleam his daddy’s affections, accidentally shoots his mother dead. Dad comes home, flips his lid and viola! Instant slasher!
If you track down the uncut version,...
