MTV Entertainment Studios and Showtime’s creative leadership teams are merging, with four more executives being laid off as the latter company’s upcoming consolidation with Paramount+ looms. Nina L. Diaz and Keith Cox will take on expanded roles as chief creative officer/president of content and president of scripted for Showtime/Mtves, respectively, reporting to Chris McCarthy.
News of the restructuring quickly follows McCarthy’s announcement earlier on Monday that Showtime co-presidents of entertainment Gary Levine and Jana Winograde’s roles would be eliminated; the former executive will take on a senior creative advisor role at the cable-streamer, while Winograde was let go as her position was consolidated. The shake-ups are a result of the larger ramifications of Showtime’s upcoming integration with Paramount+ later this year.

That didn’t take long at all: Just after revealing that Showtime co-presidents Jana Winograde and Gary Levine are stepping down from their current roles, with Winograde exiting entirely and Levine moving into an advisory position, parent company Paramount Global has revealed that the remaining Showtime team will be merging with sister brand MTV Entertainment Studios.

After parting ways with co-president of entertainment Jana Winograde and shifting two-decade Showtime veteran Gary Levine to an advisory role, McCarthy has turned to his top lieutenants at MTV Studios, Nina L. The moves are part of a greater integration between McCarthy’s MTV Entertainment Studios with Showtime and come ahead of the cabler’s rebranding and consolidation with Paramount+.
As part of McCarthy’s new structure, outlined in detail via a memo to staff (read it below), COO and CFO Michael Crotty, exec vp nonfiction Vinnie Malhotra, exec vp and general counsel Rob Rosenberg, and vp and entertainment counsel Kent Sevener have joined Jana Winograde in leaving the network. You’d better redneckognize it: Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson is back center-stage!
People can exclusively reveal that on April 21, TLC will premiere Here Comes Honey Boo Boo: The Lost Episodes, a two-hour television event starting at 9 p.m. Et.
The original Here Comes Honey Boo Boo premiered on TLC in 2012 and became an instant hit for the network, chronicling “Mama” June Shannon and her four daughters — including Alana, the show’s fun, feisty title star — and documenting their day-to-day life in McIntyre, Georgia. Because explaining the glories of a project like this requires a length unsuited for a listicle, my favorite jazz album of 2014 gets an article all to itself. The rest of my list will follow later this week.
Allen Lowe: Mulatto Radio: Field Recordings 1-4 or: A Jew at Large in the Minstrel Diaspora (Constant Sorrow)
Allen Lowe has (at least) a double identity: jazz composer/saxophonist, and scholar of early American jazz and pop. This four-cd set combines those identities even more than usual as it contains a whopping 62 original compositions, many -- perhaps even most; I didn't do the math, but it feels that way -- inspired by the sounds and personalities of early jazz and pre-jazz (both kinds of ragtime, etc.), as detailed vividly in his accompanying notes: Bunk Johnson (we get many movements from a Bunk Johnson Suite), Bix Beiderbecke, Paul Whiteman, Ernest Hogan, James Reese Europe,...

We finally had our first network cancellation of the fall season last week, when ABC dropped the ax on "Manhattan Love Story." Had the Alphabet waited one more week, we'd have made it through the first season in a while where all the new fall shows got to debut before one was canceled. But that was not to be, and instead we have our final new network fall show (with plenty more on the bench for midseason, or whatever the broadcast nets are willing to call it these days) coming up this week, along with a new cable comedy. Both, oddly, feature Jack McGee in a supporting role (the result of cable and network shows often filming on different schedules), and that — along with the fact that I don't feel strongly about either one at this stage — is enough excuse to put them together in the same post for a...

The legendary movie palace The Redford Theatre in Detroit presents a Three Stooges film festival this weekend. Here is the press release:
It’s October and Halloween is only a few weeks away. What better way to start getting ready for that scary holiday than a “Three Stooges Horror Festival”? Join us this weekend for a few frights and loads of hilarity as the Stooges roll through six of their spookiest shorts. “Mummy's Dummies” finds the boys selling used chariots in ancient Egypt (and not quite on the up and up). Soon they find themselves appearing in front of King Rootentootin, (a large and rotund Vernon Dent). Hilarity follows. Strangely, in another one of our features, “We Want Our Mummy”, we find the Stooges back in Egypt several centuries later, looking for the mummy of that same King Rootentootin — who is discovered to be a midget. Go figure. That latter...

Yes, there's a big disparity in the lengths of these reviews. It's not intended to slight albums 2-4; they all gave me great joy, and, I am sure, will continue to. But the scope of the first box set here is vastly broader, and thus each ensemble featured on it requires explanation. And of course I assume you're familiar with the styles of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Keith Jarrett.

Sky have officially announced the UK airdate for the eagerly awaited final series of Spartacus, entitled Spartacus: War of the Damned. Launching on Sky 1 HD on February 11th at 10pm, this last-ever outing of the Roman thriller tells the final chapter in the story of Spartacus and shows how the man becomes a legend… With no intention of retiring quietly creator Steven DeKnight promises that, “this season is on a scale you just can’t even imagine” and his sentiments are echoed by leading man Liam McIntyre: “It ends with every piece of epic that you’d expect from the show”.
Having built on the defeat of Commander Gaius Claudius Glaber with a string of major victories, Spartacus (McIntyre) now leads an army of more than 30,000 rebel slaves, and he’s set his sights on Rome’s corrupt elite. Alongside returning favourites like Crixus (Manu Bennett) and Gannicus (Dustin Clare...

‘Spartacus’ Season Three Gets A Whole Lot Hotter By Adding Anna Hutchison, Jenna Lind, & Gwen Taylor
Filming has already begun in New Zealand for the international sword and sandal hit-show, Spartacus and the cast is adding Anna Hutchison (Cabin in the Woods, Underbelly: Tale of Two Cities), Jenna Lind (Burning Man) and Gwendoline Taylor (Go Girls) as regulars in the upcoming season.
Here is the description of their roles as provided by Starz:
Laeta (Hutchison) is the privileged wife of a Roman dignitary who becomes entangled in the struggle against Spartacus. Her life and those of the ones she loves are forever changed by the conflict.
Kore (Lind) is a loyal slave to Marcus Crassus (Simon Merrells), the Roman tasked to bring an end to Spartacus and his rebellion. Her deep feelings for her master will be sorely tested by spiraling events.

"Apart from being supersmart, Joss Whedon has the perfect credentials to write and direct a colossal commercial construct like Marvel's The Avengers," begins David Edelstein in this week's New York. "He plainly loves the opportunity to put these comic-book icons — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) — in one room and let them hang out, spar (with words as well as hammers, shields, etc), and weigh the merits of individualism versus teamwork. Really — debate is as important to him as 'Hulk, smash!' The movie would be all over the place if not for Whedon's centrifugal seriousness. And it would be overbearingly pompous if not for his nifty ability to spoof his subjects without devaluing them. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other Whedon wonders, The Avengers is both campy and reverential."

The path to the second season of "Spartacus" was not an easy one. The show itself was like a scarred, determined gladiator, in that "Spartacus: Vengeance" (premiering Fri., Jan. 27 at 10 p.m. on Starz) had to battle its way to the small screen.
After falling for its bold, graphic and emotionally compelling first season, the show's rabid fan base learned in 2010 that Andy Whitfield, the star of the first season, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," had cancer. While Whitfield was treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Starz produced the 2011 prequel season "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," but eventually, Whitfield had to step away from the lead role permanently. Given how vital and charismatic he was in the show, it came as a tragic shock when Whitfield passed away last fall.
Could "Spartacus" go on? How do you recast a lead role that an up-and-coming actor had so commandingly made his own? And once you've found your new lead,...

Spartacus star Liam McIntyre and show creator Steven DeKnight
While the word "epic" probably isn’t quite right when it comes to describing the journey taken to get to the third season of Starz’s Spartacus, which debuts on January 27th, it isn’t far off either. After becoming a surprise hit for the cable network, the show had to deal with the news that star Andy Whitfield was stricken with cancer. While waiting for Whitfield to recover, the show’s co-creators Steven DeKnight and Rob Tapert decided on very short notice to shoot a six episode prequel in order to maintain the show’s momentum.
Tragically, Whitfield never recovered, and that left the show having to face the difficult chore of recasting the lead role of Spartacus, something DeKnight did with the blessing of Whitfield who wanted Spartacus to go on.

Unfortunately, SyFy‘s Red: Werewolf Hunter hit in the midst of holiday and sporting options that took over the collective mindset, and the media push for the show was not quite what it might have been. An entertaining bit of fantasy fun somewhere in the “tradition” of SyFy’s other fable spins (Tin Man and Alice), Red: Werewolf Hunter stars new media sensation Felicia Day as a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood… sort of… or something.
The show will air again sometime in December, and Twitter clued me in earlier today that there are hopes it will be available online before that, so you will have a chance at it again, but the interview with Felicia Day was too interesting to let lie.
