Stephanie Beatriz is opening up about a recent reunion she had with the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast which they used to remember their late co-star André Braugher.
The actor died in December 2023 at the age of 61 following a brief illness. Beatriz and her former co-stars, such as Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, and Chelsea Peretti, saw each other in March to remember Braugher.
“[It was] a chance for all of us to get together and make each other laugh,” Beatriz told People about the reunion. “And it was also a chance to talk about André. It came up immediately, and then we put it away for a while.”
She continued, “But at the end of the dinner, by the end, we were all just sharing stories about him and our memories of him. And he lives in our hearts forever and ever.”

Apparently eight seasons together was not enough. The cast of comedy-drama Brooklyn Nine-Nine gathered for a meet-up that was heavy on reminiscing.
Chelsea Peretti posted reunion photos on Instagram with the show’s other stars: Dirk Blocker, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joel McKinnon Miller, Joe Lo Truglio, Melissa Fumero, and Andy Samberg.
Of course, it was keenly felt that Andre Braugher was missing. The actor who played Capt. Raymond Holt died unexpectedly in December.

Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed to be lung cancer, his rep has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Braugher died Monday at 61 after what his rep then said was a “brief illness.”
He starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train and the platform was pushed onto the track — while also trying to comfort him in his dying moments.

Writer/director David Ferino’s feature directorial debut, “Wardcliffe,” starring Joel McKinnon Miller and Shane Coffey.
Inspired by real events, Ferino’s script takes place over the course of a single day as Dennis (Miller) and his son Ronnie (Coffey) quarantine together during the 2020 pandemic lockdown. Decades of tension escalate to a boiling point when the two find themselves confined inside. And as the outside world is seized by confusion and terror, the gulf between the men becomes ever more pronounced, and ever more destructive.
“Wardcliffe” is produced and independently financed by Roger M. Mayer through his production company, Brooklyn Reptyle.
“When I first heard of this news event in 2020, I knew it had the right criteria for a first feature. The film could be made on a small production scale, but with big emotional weight. It’s a tragedy that encapsulates the heightened anxiety we collectively shared throughout the pandemic,...

Even amid an unrelenting apocalyptic world, life finds a way. Ahead of The Last of Us Season 1 finale, HBO released a new image featuring a pregnant and seemingly stressed-out woman named Anna. Also known as Ellie’s mother, Anna is played by acclaimed voice actor and motion capture performer Ashley Johnson, who originated the role of Ellie Williams in the video game series. In the series, Ellie is portrayed by Bella Ramsey.
Within The Last of Us lore, little is known about Anna outside of her friendship with Marlene, leader of the Fireflies, and her death soon after giving birth to Ellie, leaving behind her favorite switchblade and a personal note, which Ellie carries in her backpack. However, knowing that series showrunner Craig Mazin and creator Neil Druckmann share a penchant for expanding and differentiating from the source material, we can expect to gather more information about who Anna is...

"The Last of Us" has been something of a case study in how to adapt a story from another medium. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have found the sweet spot between what works in a video game and what works as a more passive viewer, alternating between line-by-line reproductions of game dialogue and big changes.
Miraculously enough, based on what I've seen on social media, the usually incredibly demanding fanbase of the video game think that for the most part the big changes are for the better. To say I'm surprised by that is an understatement because the reputation of most fan bases these days is not exactly all puppy dogs and rose petals. If you deviate from the source material of a book, graphic novel, or video game in an adaptation, usually that results in Change.org petitions and review bombing, but "The Last of Us" has (mostly) skirted that.

HBO's "The Last Of Us" is a show that clearly loves its source material. If you couldn't tell that by the way series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the latter of whom made the video games as well) lift entire pages of dialogue straight from the game, or by listening to the official companion podcast in which they break down every filmmaking choice in detail with game actor Troy Baker, the latest episode makes it crystal clear. That's because Baker himself appears, not just in a cameo, but in a meaty (pun intended) role that's a major departure from his turn as Joel Miller in the Naughty Dog games that form the series' foundation.
In the latest episode of "The Last Of Us," Baker plays James, the doubtful right-hand man to pedophiliac, cannibalistic pastor David (Scott Shepherd). Before that,...

For seven weeks now, we've watched smuggler Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) fight to get teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) safely to the Fireflies, but all along, we've also been watching him fight for something else: her right to be a kid. The HBO series set the stage early on with the death of Joel's own daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), familiarizing us with a world in which safety is far from guaranteed and the innocent are just as likely to die as the guilty. Ellie's own naivety perfectly balances Joel's cynicism, and it becomes clearer every week that he'll do anything to protect her as he would his own daughter.
But until now, we haven't actually gotten to see what being a kid...

The Last of Us is in the middle of a fungal zombie renaissance. HBO’s The Last of Us TV series has so far received stellar reviews and only gets better with each episode. We even now know that we can expect a second season. And if that’s still not enough, the show’s source material game (or at least a remake of it) will finally be released on Steam later this year. Truly, it’s no better time to be a Last of Us fan. Unless, of course, you already played The Last of Us Part 2 and still want more.
While we’re all waiting on pins and needles for The Last of Us Part 3 (assuming Naughty Dog ever makes it), at least there are quite a few games that can help you fill that Last of Us void in the meantime. While it’s hard to find...

HBO’s prestige show of 2023 was almost released in an entirely different way, with a very different cast. The Last of Us was originally planned as an adaptation for film. The known choices for the major roles were different from the critically-acclaimed HBO series that viewers are enjoying now.
This second take on the adventures of protagonists Ellie Williams and Joel Miller — after the original video game — aimed to condense the story into just one film. Elated by the announcement of the upcoming movie, fans came up with a few popular choices for the leads. And they may have been closer to the mark than they realized.

Pedro Pascal has been acting for decades, but his title role in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian skyrocketed him to stardom. Pascal quickly became a fan favorite, with many praising his ability to express complex emotions, even from behind a helmet. With The Mandalorian Season 3 set to stream on March 1, Pascal promises to earn further critical acclaim. Still, the actor revealed another star he thinks would do Mando justice.

Pedro Pascal enjoyed his first big break in the HBO series Game of Thrones. As Oberyn Martell, the actor had one of the show’s more traumatic death scenes (a feat for the notoriously violent show). But his charm and personality helped Oberyn resonate with viewers. A few years later, in 2019, Pascal broke out as the Mandalorian in the Disney+ series.

Joel Miller has done bad things.
We’ve heard the refrain several times over the course of The Last of Us’ first four episodes. Joel said it. Tess said it. Ellie asked about it. And we’ve seen it for ourselves: Starting in Episode 1, when Joel lost his mind on the guard blocking his exit from the Quarantine Zone, and as recently as Sunday’s hour, which found him finishing off an attacker he easily could’ve let live. In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo explores the post-apocalyptic landscapes of HBO’s latest prestige hit, “The Last of Us.” Adapted from the popular video game series and created by Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”)and Neil Druckmann (“The Last of Us” video game series), the show follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor of a fungal pandemic apocalypse, who is charged with keeping a 14-year-old girl (Bella Ramsey) alive, as she may be humanity’s last hope of survival.

Whether you’ve played the video games or not, you’ve probably heard the buzz surrounding The Last of Us TV series on HBO. Many people have declared it the best video game adaptation to date, in part because of the epic and accurate performances by stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Pascal’s depiction of protagonist Joel Miller is so impressive that it had Troy Baker, who played Joel in The Last of Us games, second-guessing his original performance. Here’s what Baker said about Pascal and the TV show.
Troy Baker, who voiced Joel in ‘The Last of Us’ video games | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic Why ‘The Last of Us’ recast Joel for the TV adaptation
Baker, an actor and musician, provided the voice and motion capture in The Last of Us (2013) and its sequel, as well as the Dlc. So, why couldn’t Baker just reprise his role in HBO’s adaptation?...

Annie Wersching, an actress known for her roles in TV dramas Bosch and 24, as well as her portrayal of Leslie Dean, the mother of alien superhero Karolina on Marvel’s Runaways, has died. She was 45.
Wersching died from cancer on Sunday morning in Los Angeles, a rep for the actress told The Hollywood Reporter. In a statement, her husband Stephen Full remembered his wife and the mother of their three children.
“There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today. But she left us the tools to fill it,” he said. “She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn’t require music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. ‘Go find it. It’s everywhere.’ And find it we shall.”
“As I drove our boys, the true loves of her life, down the winding driveway and street, she would yell Bye!

After a record-breaking debut, HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a second season. Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) as he takes a young girl, Ellie (Bella Ramsey), across the country. In a world ravaged by a fungal pandemic, her immunity to the Cordyceps infection could be humanity’s last hope at survival.
Mazin and Druckmann have both expressed their gratitude at the love that fans have shown the series. In an HBO press release, Druckmann said “I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. Interest in "The Last of Us" series is spreading just as fast as the fictitious Cordyceps pandemic. In case you've been in your own apocalypse bunker for the past few weeks, the series is an adaptation of the highly acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name, following the relationship between hardened survivor Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and plucky, post-apocalypse born Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) on their road trip through a ruined, dystopian version of America. In this universe, a mutation of the Cordyceps fungus has spread to humans, turning them into infected zombies. The U.S. military have taken it upon themselves to contain the remnants of American society in quarantine zones, the oppressed are rising up against Fedra in their own resistance groups, and somehow, Ellie might be the key to finding a cure to it all.

HBO drama The Last of Us adapts the critically-acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name, and some viewers are already comparing this TV version to hours of beloved, harrowing, dramatic scenes.
Those familiar with the original video game will see many meticulously reconstructed scenes lifted directly from that PlayStation classic. But one major departure is in the portrayals of the characters themselves. They look different, sure, but according to actor Anna Torv, the creative differences go much deeper than that.

If you thought the last “Last of Us” — also known as the HBO drama’s series premiere — reached a large audience, get a load of Sunday’s initial numbers.
Episode 2 of “The Last of Us” landed 5.7 million viewers in the U.S. on Sunday night, according to a combination of Nielsen data and HBO’s internal streaming metrics, up 1 million viewers — or +22 percent — from the previous weekend’s series debut. That growth (on a percentage basis) marks the largest Week 2 audience increase for an HBO original drama in the history of the network. Drama is a key word here, so IndieWire dug a little deeper into the archives for context.
In 2009, “Hung,” a comedy, experienced a greater Week 2 engorgement, rising nearly 41 percent from its own series premiere. “Hung” Episode 101 drew 3.7 million viewers; 102 soared to 5.2 million viewers. Those “Hung” episodes followed Season 2 episodes of hit vampire drama “True Blood.” At the time,...

HBO's "The Last of Us" is not only a faithful retelling of the beloved video game it's based on, but it has already improved upon several key elements. The television adaptation utilizes the full potential of the medium, often adding instead of subtracting from the dense material. From the opening moments of the pilot, it's clear "The Last of Us" will be a new experience built on a familiar foundation. However, as avid fans of the game, we cannot help but get giddy when the show pays direct homage to its predecessor. That won't be stopping soon, either, as clickers will be making their live-action debut. Joel himself, Pedro Pascal, may beg to differ, though.
Judging based on the latest trailer footage, the fungi-infested monsters have been translated to live-action in stunning fashion, bringing over one of the most terrifying aspects of the video game without mincing details. For the uninitiated,...

The Las of Us is a series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
The series premiere of The Last Of US drew 4.7 million viewers across linear and HBO Max platforms on Sunday night in the U.S., based on Nielsen and first party data. This is HBO’s second largest debut, behind only “House of the Dragon,” since “Boardwalk Empire” premiered on the network in 2010, before HBO programming was broadly available on a streaming app. Sunday night’s performance was nearly double the season two debut night for “Euphoria,” which went on to average 19.5 million viewers per episode in the U.S. Sunday night viewership for an HBO series typically represents 20-40 of the show’s total gross audience per episode.
The Last Of US was also a hit on social media, with the series trending #1 both in the U.S. and worldwide on Twitter Sunday night.

Hollywood is getting better at handling video games. From the surprisingly fun "Sonic" movies over at Paramount Pictures to Netflix's critically acclaimed TV series "Arcane: League of Legends", there's a noticeable upward trend in quality or, at the very least, attention to detail. Now, it looks like "The Last of Us" could prove the champion of them all. Distributed by Warner Bros. Television Studios on HBO, and adapted from Naughty Dog's narrative-driven action-adventure game of the same name, "The Last of Us" follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) as he begrudgingly cares for Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) in a post-apocalyptic America savaged by fungal zombies. Any more information than that and we're veering into spoiler territory, and you really need to experience this one first-hand.

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
When "The Last of Us" was released in 2013, it significantly maximized the scope for video game storytelling by creating a survival-horror narrative rich in subtext and emotional resonance. The world-building in "The Last of Us" is terrifically etched starting with the game's prologue, which unfurls into a tense, high-stakes, often-traumatizing story about two souls struggling for survival in an apocalyptic setting. That prologue remains unforgettable to this day, as it not only sets the tone for the remaining tale but also features a heartbreaking death which shapes the trajectory of our protagonist, Joel Miller. The manner in which Joel's daughter, Sarah, is ruthlessly shot by a soldier despite not being infected is devastating; although brief, the prologue leaves a lasting impression on the player and plunges them into the action in-medias-res.

Video game adaptations have become more prominent in recent years, though many of these films and series haven't necessarily broken what's known as the "video game movie curse." While some have been financially successful, many adaptations have not been received favorably by critics. Ruben Fleischer's "Uncharted," for example, did not falter at the box office, but was critically panned. As someone who's deeply into the "Uncharted" series of games, I believe the film was sorely missing the hilarious and heartfelt chemistry between the two main protagonists, Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg brought the characters to life, but their dynamic and relationship evolution felt far from genuine.
Now along comes "The Last of Us," an HBO adaptation of another Naughty Dog video game that relies even more heavily on the dynamic between its two main characters, Joel and Ellie, portrayed by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson in the video games.

Pedro Pascal, our beloved Mando in "The Mandalorian," and Joel Miller in HBO's upcoming adaptation of "The Last of Us," is on one hell of a career trajectory. Pascal's journey as a television actor can be traced as far back as 1999 — the actor guest-starred in episodes of prominent shows over the years, including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Law & Order," and "The Mentalist." After he had his eyes gouged out as Oberyn Martell in "Game of Thrones," Pascal finally started getting the recognition he deserves, paving the path for his breakthrough lead role in "Narcos." Since then, Pascal has had an affinity for choosing characters who harbor complex motivations and often function on the fringes of society. Or maybe, these overlapping traits are mere coincidence.
In a recent interview with Wired, Pascal was asked whether he deliberately gravitates toward characters that play into the "tough, conflicted outsider status," such as Din Djarin and Joel Miller.

“The Last of Us” is considered one of the best video games in recent memory, if not of all time. Created by Naughty Dog and released for the Sony PlayStation in 2013, the action-adventure-horror game became a massive hit both commercially and critically — it won Game of the Year over 200 times, a record only beaten by its sequel, “The Last of Us II.”
This is why game fans have been cautiously optimistic about HBO’s “The Last of Us” live-action adaptation. And for good reason — video game adaptations rarely go well..
So what sets this adaptation apart?
Creator and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann is thankfully heavily involved in HBO’s “The Last of Us,” serving as co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer of the series alongside Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”), and together the team has done an excellent job of sticking close to the source material while also breathing life into new characters along the way,...

Beautiful storytelling is at the forefront of The Last of Us, an emotional but brutal postapocalyptic journey of survival based on the popular video game. In the United States of 2033, a mutated fungus has destroyed civilization, and single dad Joel Miller must smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie (Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey), out of a harsh quarantine zone. (Credit: HBO) “The characters are in a totally different place each episode, but the through line is always Joel and Ellie,” says co-writer Neil Druckmann, who also created the game. “Everything is built around that connection and its evolution, from when they first meet and don’t like each other to how they learn to care more and more and make greater sacrifices for each other.” Translating that to TV was a thrill for co-writer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), who dubs this his largest production — “and I’ve been involved with some big ones!

The eight-season run of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" was quite a ride. Premiering in 2013, the workplace comedy about the NYPD's 99th precinct capped its first season with surprise Golden Globe wins for best comedy and best television actor in a musical or comedy series for star Andy Samberg. The show continued to receive critical acclaim but never topped the television ratings, leading Fox to cancel the series just shy of its fifth season finale. Due in large part to the outcry from loyal fans, NBC swept in the next day and picked up the quirky comedy for an additional three seasons.

I, along with the rest of the general population, like to believe that there's nothing that Pedro Pascal cannot do. His filmography agrees. The Chilean-American actor has played a ravenous prince, a DEA agent, a lonely bounty hunter with fatherly tendencies, and a Nicolas Cage superfan. He's also going to play his most anticipated role yet, that of Joel Miller, in HBO's adaptation of "The Last Of Us," which is one of the biggest video games in the world.
