Cinema numbers are shrinking again as Covid-19 cases rise across Europe.
France, opening Wednesday October 14
It has been a complicated few days for French distributors and exhibitors following the introduction of a night-time curfew from Saturday night in Paris and eight other major cities, as part of measures to slow the spread of Covid-19.
The measure, which obliges people to return home by 9pm, effectively wipes out key evening screening slots although exhibitors are lobbying the government for a special dispensation for cinemagoers. A final decision was expected late Friday or over the weekend, but if the answer is ‘no...

Richard Dreyfuss holds together an earthbound tale of an old widower who dreams of a voyage to the stars
Amid the pressures of the current crisis, we could all use some uplifting, unchallenging, bittersweet sentimentality. That’s exactly what’s on offer from Astronaut, a film with a small budget, a big heart and an A-list Hollywood star blessed with enough twinkly charisma to pull off a potentially preposterous role. More at home on a TV screen than it perhaps would have seemed in cinemas, this wistful drama from Shelagh McLeod (her directorial feature debut) may not be earth-shattering, yet it retains the power to charm, thanks in large part to a central performance by Richard Dreyfuss that ranks among his best work.

Richard Dreyfuss plays a retired engineer who wins a place on the first commercial space flight in an amiable, late-life adventure
A likable performance by Richard Dreyfuss livens up this easygoing drama about second chances and late-life adventure from actor-turned-director Shelagh McLeod. Dreyfuss plays a retired civil engineer who, all his life, has dreamed of going to space and is now in with a chance of winning a golden ticket. The role is a nice mirror to Close Encounters, in which Dreyfuss ditched his wife and kids to fly off with the little green men.
Here he is a family-oriented man who nursed his wife through dementia and is adored by his grownup daughter. He has lived a good life but perhaps stifles a pang of regret at the average-ness of it all. It’s a film of tender feelings, though perhaps a little predictable and bluntly sentimental.

The recently widowed retiree Angus (Richard Dreyfuss) might be in the gutter, but he looks at the stars. Indeed, despite his flailing health and tricky family situation, the hopeful septuagenarian lives by that famous Oscar Wilde quote in “Astronaut,” actress-turned-filmmaker Shelagh McLeod’s caringly observed debut feature. It’s a modestly scoped, visually amateurish film, but limited resources don’t stop McLeod from reaching for galactic emotions with the story of a fantasist chasing his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut. In the end, only a fraction of McLeod’s ambitions sticks a landing. But “Astronaut” stays afloat with sweetness, thanks to a measured performance from Dreyfuss.
And that might just be intriguing enough for Dreyfuss loyalists, as well as aging viewers starved for original stories centered on their own demographics — after all, it’s not only the below-60 crowd that deserves to have an outer space adventure. But even...

How long has it been since Richard Dreyfuss got a proper starring vehicle? No matter what answer you give, the most apt one is this: too long. Well, this weekend, that changes with the release of Astronaut, an independent drama about a man hoping to become an astronaut late in life. Dreyfuss elevates the material, which could get a bit of an extra push considering the recent anniversary of man walking on the moon. Renewed interest in Nasa and space exploration might help put a bit of a bonus spotlight on this one, though Dreyfuss himself is enough of a selling point. Nothing too special is happening here, but it’s a small scale movie that does just enough right in order to warrant a recommendation. The film is a light drama about an older gentleman finally trying to achieve a lifelong dream. Angus (Dreyfuss) was once a highly respected civil engineer,...

It’s the beginning of the end for Angus Stewart (Richard Dreyfuss). His wife recently passed after a difficult and costly bout with dementia, his heart isn’t what it used to be, and his family is unsure about what to do to help him adjust. While his daughter Molly (Krista Bridges) and grandson Barney (Richie Lawrence) want him to move in, his son-in-law Jim (Lyriq Bent) can’t help wondering if enduring the strain of another aging parent on a daily basis isn’t good for his wife’s health. Angus will honestly agree to whatever course of action they decide because he knows the inevitable burden being in their house creates whether they’d admit it or not. As long as he can still look up at the stars, he’ll live anywhere.
So of course he grows giddy with excitement when writer/director Shelagh McLeod gives him...

With a career stretching back to the 1960s and screen credits including American Graffiti, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, actor Richard Dreyfuss needs little introduction. In his latest role, the actor play an elderly widower, Angus, in moving comedy-drama Astronaut. With a long-held dream of space flight suddenly reignited by an independant space agency's open competition for everyday astronauts, Angus must battle prejudice against his age and health to realise his dream. The debut feature of writer director Shelagh McLeod, the film finds Dreyfuss turning in a sensitive performance as a man pushed to the margins by societal views of the elderly and even his own family's attitudes towards the percieved disruption he may cause thier lives. Bringing the film to Edinburgh...

In his latest interview/podcast, host Stuart Wright talks with actor, writer and director Shelagh McLeod about her debut feature Astronaut.
Richard Dreyfuss is excellent in this moving and enthralling new drama from writer-director Shelagh McLeod. Dreyfuss stars as Angus, a lonely widower whose long-held dream of becoming an astronaut is reignited when a nationwide competition is announced to win a trip to space with an independent space agency. Angus struggles against prejudice towards his age and increasing ill health, and with the help of his dysfunctional family his dream gets closer and closer to becoming reality.

Shelagh McLeod directs Richard Dreyfuss in Astronaut
Screening at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival, Astronaut is the story of Angus, an elderly man who is determined to pursue his dream of going into space. When a private company decides to run a contest for people aged 18 to 65, he decides to fudge his age to enter, but he also has to deal with the concerns of his family and some unexpected setbacks, with nothing quite going to plan.
Vancouver-born Shelagh McLeod, who grew up in England, has enjoyed a lengthy career in acting, including longstanding roles in Peak Practice, Doctors and Holby City. This is her first venture into writing and directing a feature length work, and I ask her what it was that made her want to tell this story.
"My mother died in a nursing home," she says. "In the nursing home gardens there was an old man in a wheelchair who.

"You know I have to do this..." "I know you do." Quiver Distribution has unveiled the official trailer for an odd little indie drama titled Astronaut, the feature directorial debut of Canadian-British actress Shelagh McLeod. The concept for this sounds like it could be a super goofy comedy, but it's really a straightforward drama - and it looks very, very cheesy. Richard Dreyfuss stars as a lonely widower who battles his family, ill health, and time, in order to win a competition for a golden ticket to visit space. The cast includes Lyriq Bent, Krista Bridges, Graham Greene, Richie Lawrence, and Colm Feore as the Elon Musk-esque billionaire who offers the once-in-a-lifetime trip to space. I'm stunned this film even exists, seems so bland. Here's the first official trailer (+ two posters) for Shelagh McLeod's Astronaut, direct from YouTube: Angus (Dreyfuss), a lonely widower, has his long-extinguished dream to...
