Notorious for terrorising at least two generations of top heroes – in reel life – with just his trademark glare, steely voice, and facial expressions ranging from ferocious to sneering, he especially stood out for his film relations with Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, whom he once bested onscreen with two words.
In one standard of the lost-and-found potboiler genre, Amitabh, with his role’s habitual insouciance, asks a stern-looking, impeccably-dressed character: “Aap kaun hai mai-baap?”. Pat came the terse reply: “Tumhara baap”.
This was “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977) – one of the 11 that Pran, born on this day (February 12) in 1920 – did with the Big B, playing with his father two times more or a reluctant ally. Of these, at least 9 are intrinsic to the Bachchan legend, including “Zanjeer” (1973), “Don” (1978), “Naseeb” (1981), “Kaalia” (1981), “Sharaabi” (1984), and “Shahenshah” (1988)

Naaz Cinema Building in South Mumbai was the address for the film distribution and exhibition trade in the city, besides all the peripheral businesses that served and survived on these trades. The cinema itself had seen some glorious days with a number of great hits screened there and the building above it was where just about every major film distributor and exhibitor worked from. Whether it was a first-time film producer, or a regular maker, a visit to Naaz was a must to sell his film.
I remember two such stories about unsold films, though there may be many more.
Producer K C Bokadia had made ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’ with Mithun Chakraborty and Padmini Kolhapure. Those days, when it came to a Mithun film, the distributors were spoilt for choice; they had flooded the market.
Bokadia took the proposal to the office of a distributor and got an offer which he did not like.

In the episode 21 of the quiz based reality show, host Amitabh Bachchan welcomed Neeru Yadav, popularly known as Hockey Sarpanch, from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, and Chhavi Rajawat former Sarpanch of Soda, a village which is 60 kilometers from Jaipur, Rajasthan — to the hot seat.

Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has reminisced about working with megastar Amitabh Bachchan and said that part of the reason they made a good onscreen “jodi” is their shared work ethic.
Zeenat took to Instagram, where she talked about working with Amitabh in the 1981 film ‘Laawaris’, which also stars Amjad Khan. The story revolves around an orphan who stumbles over reality in search for his parents.
The film became known for its song “Mere Angene Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai”. The second version became very popular due to Bachchan’s comedic performance in drag.

Amitabh Bachchan has penned a heartfelt tribute to Rakesh Kumar, director of some of his best-known films, including ‘Mr. Natwarlal, ‘Yaarana’ and ‘Khoon Pasina’. The actor took to his blog and penned an emotional note on Kumar, who passed away on November 10.
Big B wrote, “But morose is the day… for another colleague has left us and me in particular… Rakesh, first Ad to Prakash Mehra on ‘Zanjeer’… then independent director for other Pm films… and singularly – ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Khoon Pasina’, ‘Mr Natwarlal’, ‘Yaarana’, et al… and such great camaraderie on sets and elsewhere, socially, during events and Holi… One by one they all leave.”

On his 80th birthday, the thespian is not ready to call time on his career. Amitabh Bachchan has been a struggler, superstar, bankrupt, a small screen phenomenon, a celluloid colossus and has more or less essayed all types of roles to remain an iconoclast. The arc of his universe littered with peaks and troughs has been legendary.
In an age where hyperboles are common, he stands apart for his being and remains a true legend. Over the years, I have met him and spoken with him several times. Modest to the point of being self-deprecatory, he refuses to accept that his persona remains larger than life. Never afraid to speak his mind, he is distantly related to funambulism.
As he once told me: “I want to keep working, I shall continue to do my best.” He added, “Actually, I don’t know what else to do. Life is a blur...

Over his vibrantly colourful career, which has crossed the half-century mark and is still going strong, Amitabh Bachchan was paired with several generations of heroines and held his own against many male peers, as well as older and younger generations spanning Dilip Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan. His real test, however, was to maintain the upper hand when facing accomplished character actors, ranging from dastardly villains to steadfast friends, and even long-lost parents.
There are many such actors playing key roles in some of Bachchan’s iconic films – would Inspector Vijay Khanna been successful in tackling crime without the tip-offs from an anonymous drunk or proved his mettle against a lesser villain than Teja, would “(the fake) Don” have worked without the acumen of Dsp D’Silva or found himself in travails without the machinations of Vardhaman, or Sikandar found his ‘muqaddar’ without the advice of Dervish Baba.

He had been in Bollywood for over three years and appeared in over two dozen films, but the ones that stood out had him in cameos and the ones he starred in were flops. Then came the indignity of being removed from a film halfway for a more saleable star – and a disheartened Amitabh Bachchan was ready to quit Bollywood. However, three men – a pair of steadily-rising scriptwriters and a director – ensured that he not only remained in the industry but rose to the top.
And with “Zanjeer” (1973), prime movers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, along with the initially reluctant Prakash Mehra, created a new Bollywood archetype, of the “angry young man”, and Bachchan was picked to give its definitive shape. He was also lucky that most of the reigning top actors rejected this paradigm shift for some reason or the other, based on their quirks.

The only thing I find missing is the Indian Post & Telegraph issuing a special commemorative stamp to honour him with a special denomination coin to follow in due time. This week, weekend and some days to come, it will be Amitabh Bachchan all over. In media, in cinemas, on television.
Most moviegoers would have learnt of the arrival of Amitabh Bachchan when producer-director Praksha Mehra’s film Zanjeer hit the screens.
The story and dialogue were by the Salim-Javed duo, who were charting a path to success with “Andaz”, “Adhikar”, “Seeta Aur Geeta”, and “Haathi Mere Saathi” to their credit. Probably, not big names enough to lure the veterans who were offered the film, to accept it. The film fell into the lap of a struggling newcomer, Amitabh Bachchan. “Zanjeer”, when released, went on to become a box office blockbuster.

"Saara Shaher Mujhe Loin Ke Naam Se Jaanta Hai," roared Ajit, the numero uno villain of the early 70s in Subhash Ghai's hit film Kalicharan. For the younger generation who do not recognize him can identify the stylish villain in Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer (who played Dindayal Teja) and in Dharmendra's hit film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (as Shakal). His other hit films include Dharma, Jugnu, Khote Sikkay, Warrant, Mr. Natwarlal, etc
Ajit's biggest contribution to cinema is his revolutionary, savvy gentleman style that he imparted to villainy, which for long had been typecast as loud and wild. Ajit's unique style became so popular that it became his trademark style till he breathed his last.
How Ajit invented this style is an interesting tale. In an interview, Ajit had revealed, "The character of Dindayal Teja which I portrayed in Zanjeer was actually inspired from a real-life personality.

Shimla, Jan 15: Just as you leave the Mall, the hill station's main shopping street, towards the chief minister's official residence, the narrow road meanders its way to a heritage hotel owned by the erstwhile royal family of Jubbal that has an enduring link to Bollywood.
Uday Singh and his grand Woodville Palace, now a heritage hotel with typical British Raj architecture, have over the years seen no less than 25 films shot there, among them Prakash Mehra's "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black" and Raj Kumar Hirani's "3 Idiots".
But then, the former royal has also witnessed the ugly side of the picture.

The producers of Zanjeer surely have a reason to celebrate since the court ruled in their favour and has also allowed them to release the film on September 6.
Writer duo Salim and Javed had filed a case against the producers, late Prakash Mehra's sons Sumeet and Puneet Mehra, for producing a remake without their consent as they claimed to own the rights of the film. Also, they had demanded for a compensation of Rs. 6 crores when the remake was announced. However, the Bombay High Court apparently ruled out the case of the writers on the basis of lack of evidence being submitted to them, on Monday afternoon. Adding further, the lawyer of Mehra brothers Jayendra Kapadia also revealed that the court concluded the case by stating that the film completely belongs to its old producer Prakash Mehra and the writers have no claim over it.

Look. Indian cinema is like a massive bouquet of wildflowers of different colours and smells. You really can’t judge Policegiri, Sanjay Dutt’s hefty homage to hero-giri completed before his 3-year prison terms, against the soft gently-undulating movements of the week’s other release Lootera. If Vikramaditya Motwane’s film is soft-petalled rose Policegiri is a wild cactus flower from the desert.
Why cactus? The landscape is populated with pricks, you see.
It’s roaring 12-gun salute to the traditional mainstream cinema’s ongoing obsession with the corruption-cleansing cop who goes on a rampage. The anti-establishment figure from Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer has been slyly transformed into the Khaki-coloured law-enforcer with shades of grey .

Having extricated the legally-challenged project from its producer Amit Mehra, Amit Mehra's brothers Puneet and Sumeet Mehra are all set now go all-out to promote Zanjeer in preparation for a September release. Finally, the first trailer of Zanjeer would be out on the internet on Friday. Informs a source close to the project. "The Zanjeer team has so far been legally forbidden from any promotion and marketing. But now that Puneet and Sumeet have taken over Zanjeer to produce it under their father Prakash Mehra's banner (Prakash Mehra Productions) the decks are cleared for a September release." Shedding light on Amit Mehra's ouster from the project, the source says, "He brought it on himself. He kept telling the entire production team of Zanjeer that his brothers had no interest in the movie business when in fact Puneet and Sumeet were repeatedly requesting Amit to let them be a part of their father's production house.

Mumbai, May 12: Four decades ago when "Zanjeer" came, it not only rocked the box office, but also changed lead actor Amitabh Bachchan's fortunes in films and even won him the tag of Angry Young Man. On completion of 40 years of the film, Big B is ecstatic and thanks every one.
Released May 11, 1973, the movie starred Big B as police officer Vijay. It was his first blockbuster after a string of flops and after the Prakash Mehra-directed action-revenge thriller, there was no looking back for him.
"'Zanjeer' 40 years of release. Goodness... an entire lifetime, an entire change of my world... (writer duo) Salim-Javed, Prakash ji, thank.

Contrary to reports in certain leading newspapers, the Big B who played the iconic cop Vijay in Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer in 1973 won't be making an appearance in the remake. Efforts to get the Big B to be part of Zanjeer have failed. Apparently, the film's team was enormously keen to get the super-iconic star to do a cameo. It seems every effort was made to get the Big B into the picture, until the last minute. Finally the beard proved the villain. Says a source close to the project, "The neo - Zanjeer team was very keen to get Amitji on board right from the start. However, Mr. Bachchan's other commitments prevented him from putting in a token appearance as a senior cop. Finally when it seemed he would somehow accommodate the neo - Zanjeer's dream to have him in their film his beard became the villain." The...

Mumbai, March 26: Contrary to reports, Amitabh Bachchan, who played the iconic cop Vijay in Prakash Mehra's "Zanjeer" in 1973, won't be making an appearance in the remake.
When contracted, director Apoorva Lakhia said: "Although it would be an honour for any filmmaker to have India's most iconic actor in his film, Amitji won't be playing a role in 'Zanjeer'. That would put an extra pressure on Ramcharan Teja who plays the angry cop that Amitji had played in the original 'Zanjeer'."
Lakhia fondly recalls an incident from "Shootout At Lokhandwala", the last film in which he had directed Big B and Sanjay Dutt.

Apoorva Lakhia's version of Zanjeer starring Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra is almost complete but the makers are still in a state of limbo owing to copyright issues. Veteran writer Salim Khan (who co-wrote the original Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer along with Javed Akhtar) has demanded a compensation of Rs. 6 crores as royalty from Reliance Entertainment and Amit Mehra (producers of Zanjeer remake). Salim Khan has taken up the case with the Scriptwriter's Association demanding a fair share of royalty. Khan stated that he and Javed Akhtar had the copyright to the script of Zanjeer which they had licensed to late filmmaker Prakash Mehra even stating that if the film were to be remade again they would be eligible for royalty. Salim Khan is demanding a royalty of Rs. 3 crore for the Hindi version and another Rs. 3 crore for the Telugu version. It remains to be seen how...

It has been confirmed that the legendary actor and iconic Bollywood villain Pran will be graciously making a cameo appearance in the remake to the 1973 classic Zanjeer. It is remembered by many for being the film which elevated Amitabh Bachchan to superstardom. Following its success, Bachchan was able to establish himself as ‘the angry young man’ of Hindi cinema. The remake is being directed by Amit Mehra, whose father Prakash Mehra directed the original film.

Producer Amit Mehra who is remaking his illustrious father Prakash Mehra's 1973 Amitabh Bachchan classic Zanjeer is embroiled in a remake-compensation battle with his own brother Puneet Mehra. Puneet has apparently gone to court for the compensation amount due to him to relinquish remake rights to Amit. But Amit says he has already submitted the due money in the honourable court and that the dispute is not between the Mehra brothers but between Puneet Mehra and Salim-Javed, the scriptwriters of the original Zanjeer, who have legally staked a claim to compensation for the remake. Says the harassed Amit, "The money is with the honourable court. Now it's up to the legal procedure to validate who's to get the compensation. Puneet or Salim-Javed." On his part, Amit is immensely embarrassed by the family dispute coming out into the open. "Among us three brothers, only I seem to have inherited our father's passion for cinema.

The very moment the news became public about the remake of (late) Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer (which is produced by his son Amit Mehra), everybody in showbiz was excited to the core. Now, the excitement seems to have run into rough weather, courtesy Amit failing to pay his two brothers who have terminated the remake contract. What happened was that Amit, after buying the film's remake rights from Sumeet (his Us based elder brother) and Mumbai based Puneet (younger brother) defaulted on payments. This resulted in Sumeet and Puneet terminating the said contract. And since the Arbitrator upheld the contract's termination, Amit approached the Bombay High Court. And as per the Hc order, Amit has been given a reprieve to shoot the film. At the same time, however, he can't release the film until further orders are issued from the Hc. While Amit said that he is making the payments and releasing the film,...

Remember the big dramatic sequence in Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer where the Big B playing the scowling ireful cop Vijay drags Jaya Bhaduri, the reluctant eyewitness for the villain Teja's crime, into the hospital to show her first-hand the mayhem that he has caused? This week director Apoorva Lakhia shot that sequence with Ramcharan and Priyanka Chopra for the neo-Zanjeer. And the venue of the shooting was Ramcharan's wife Upasana Kamineni's hospital, the massive pride of Hyderabad, the Apollo. An eyewitness from the scene of the melee says, "It was like a rally for big-time politicians, the kind of crowds that Narendra Modi attracts at his election rallies. That's how popular Ramcharan is in Andhra. And when you add Priyanka Chopra to the proceedings you've got a virtual stampede on hand. The minute news spread that Priyanka and Ramcharan were shooting in his wife's hospital, all of Hyderabad swooped down on the place.

On August 28, 2012 this writer had reported that Sanjay Dutt would be playing the iconic Pathan Sher Khan in Apoorva Lakhia's remake of Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer. At that time Dutt and his faithful team stoutly denied the reports and even accused the remakers of cashing in on his name prematurely. Dutt, we hear, was influenced by some of his friends and well-wishers against doing the film. Uncertain about the star's intentions, the makers of the new Zanjeer went and negotiated with Sonu Sood to play Sher Khan. The combination of Sonu Sood who is a major force in Telugu cinema and Telugu superstar Ramcharan Teja made huge box office sense in the South. Sonu was supposed to do both the Hindi and Telugu versions of Zanjeer. He had even begun to work on his 'Sher Khan' look. Turns out, Sanjay Dutt is doing the role after all.

Just yesterday we had reported that Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan were assembling a legal team to battle against the producer of the Zanjeer remake, Amit Mehra. Well, the duo has now sent a legal notice to Mehra claiming royalties for the script that they had penned decades back. Akhtar, who had been on the committee that reviewed the latest Copyright Amendment Bill of 2011, has been the first one to stand up for the rights that the Act ensures. The said bill upholds the Rights of an author in an entire product such as films. And though Amit Mehra, son of producer Prakash Mehra, may have the rights of the film, sharing royalties with the scriptwriters becomes essential. Akhtar and Salim have since hired a Delhi based legal firm, Luthra & Luthra and sent a notice to Mehra asking him to start a negotiation.
