How exactly does a 1964 musical, based on the impoverished and persecuted Jewish shtetl community in 1905 Imperial Russia, still connect to audiences around the world? That’s the question director Max Lewkowicz seeks to uncover in his documentary “Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles.”
Rather than exploring the 55-year-long success of “Fiddler on the Roof” and serving something akin to a highlight reel, Lewkowicz wisely chooses to take us on the journey of the show’s complicated and dramatic beginnings. He instead focuses on the key players of the original production through interviews with lyricist Sheldon Harnick as well as previously recorded interviews with composer Jerry Bock and librettist Joseph Stein, both of whom passed in 2010.
The story the three key players weave regarding the creation of the musical really touches on how the show pays homage to its source material, the original short stories of Russian-Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem. Each interview is wisely placed and timed,...

Channel 4 has announced that Homeland's third season will premiere in the UK next month.
The award-winning drama - starring Damian Lewis and Claire Danes - will return on Sunday, October 6 at 9pm. It will premiere on Showtime in the Us on Sunday, September 29.
Homeland triumphed at the 2013 Primetime Emmys on Sunday night (September 22), with Danes taking home the 'Leading Actress in a Drama Series' award for the second year running and writer Henry Bromell being recognised for his work on season two's 'Q&A'.
Fox 21's Bert Salke recently billed the new season as "Homeland 2.0", and claimed that viewers can expect a different, "more emotional" show.
Meanwhile, Lewis told Digital Spy earlier this year that he does not see Carrie and Brody's romance as "a story that has got legs", and argued that the pair would be "in the divorce courts very quickly".

Back to School Month + 1980 Retrospective- StinkyLulu doubles up for Fame (1980). A partial version of this article first appeared at StinkyLulu in 2007
When I was a wee lil Stinky, I watched the original Fame over and over and over again. 'Twas my movie. And possibly because I watched the film so many dang times, the starkly human performances by the actresses playing teachers in the film burrowed deep into my consciousness. I’m not just talking about Debbie Allen’s legendary cameo. Mostly, I’m thinking especially of Anne Meara as Mrs. Sherwood and Joanna Merlin as Miss Berg.
The roles of Sherwood and Miss Berg are quintessential “actressing at the edges” sorts of parts. Each is relevant to the film’s dramatic arc only insofar as she amplifies the narrative of one of Fame’s principal characters. As the language arts teacher, Meara’s Sherwood is Leroy’s obstacle, while...

"Homeland" Season 3 will continue the Brody and Carrie saga, but that's not all it will tackle. While appearing on ABC News' "This Week With George Stephanopoulos," co-creator Alex Gansa let some new details slip about the third season of Showtime's "Homeland."
"The issue in this season is, what happens if it were learned that a major attack on the United States was sponsored by a state? These are the big concerns that we're going to deal with in the first sweep of episodes," Gansa said. "And then there's the big question about, you know, where Brody is?
"Does anybody know that Carrie helped him get out of the country?" Gansa said. "And will they ever see each other again?"
Season 3 of "Homeland" will also see the addition of several new faces. Joanna Merlin, Nazanin Boniadi, Amy Morton, Lawrence Clayton and Tracy Letts will all appear in Season 3.

When Homeland returns this fall, we’ll be knee deep in the aftermath of the Season 2 finale. Many characters we had gotten to know through out the show’s run met grisly ends in the last couple episodes leading up to the finale, which concluded with a massive explosion and even more deaths. With so many characters now dead and gone, Homeland needs to replenish its well of talent. So far many great actors have joined for the show’s third season and the latest is Boardwalk Empire actor David Aaron Baker. Unfortunately for him, his character might have the hardest job there could be in a show like this.
According to THR, Baker is guest starring as Dr. Harlan, an assessment shrink who will be meeting with Saul, Carrie and other CIA survivors of last season’s devastating terrorist attack. I say his job will be hard because these...

Everyone flirts differently. That's the first thing you need to know if you choose the action "to flirt," whether in an audition scene or a performance. Consider the ways different actors flirt, says Los Angeles acting coach Scott Sedita, one of my go-to people for commonsense advice about acting.George Clooney has a confident, ironic flirt, with a glint in the eye. Kim Cattrall's flirt is sexually charged. Justin Long's is shy; Michael Cera's is awkward and self-effacing, like Woody Allen's. Angelina Jolie's is seductive. You can flirt coyly, teasingly, comically, innocently, any which way. I've noticed that some people appear to be flirting simply by lowering their voice and speaking in hushed, confiding tones.Ultimately, though, you must flirt in your own personal, honest way within the circumstances of the script and with the qualities of the character you're playing. Hopefully, what comes out...

"Stella was tough," recalls Kate Mulgrew of her acting teacher, the legendary Stella Adler. That description is an understatement. In 1931, Adler was a founding member of the revolutionary Group Theatre, which took Broadway by storm with a series of naturalistic productions of socially relevant plays, such as Clifford Odets' "Awake and Sing" and "Paradise Lost." In 1934, unsatisfied with Group Theatre co-founder Lee Strasberg's teaching of Konstantin Stanislavsky's techniques, the determined Adler traveled to Paris and studied with Stanislavsky himself. She returned to the Group with her own understanding of his work and offered acting classes to other members, including Sanford Meisner, Elia Kazan, and Robert Lewis. After a sojourn in Hollywood, where she appeared in such films as "Love on Toast" and "The Shadow of the Thin Man," Adler returned to New York and London to direct and act in numerous plays and to teach at the Erwin Piscator...
