Making its California premiere at the Dances With Films Festival later this month, the indie werewolf short Let It Kill You looks to put a unique twist on lycanthrope mythology.
Bloody Disgusting has been told, “The story presents an intriguing concept that the Ancient Egyptian god of the dead—the Anubis—was perhaps the first-known werewolf.”
The clip that we’re exclusively sharing today features a very different practical effects werewolf transformation, with the creature emerging from a mummified-shaped cocoon.
In the film from writer/director/composer David Cornue…
“When a disillusioned American soldier unearths an alleged enemy combatant from a tomb, he fights to prove the man’s innocence, only to discover his new friend may have been buried alive for a reason.”
Let It Kill You will be screening as part of Midnight Shorts Block 1 on June 24, at 11:45pm. You can learn more over on the official Dances With Films Festival website.

Praise be to Steven Meyer, maybe Eddie Lane, and definitely Hulu, for “The Path” has been renewed for a third season. The streaming service announced early Wednesday that its critically acclaimed drama series would continue for 13 more episodes, answering the prayers of fans everywhere — and the cast.
“We’re willing it to happen,” Michelle Monaghan said, weeks before the Season 3 pick-up was announced. IndieWire spoke with Monaghan, co-star Aaron Paul, and creator Jessica Goldberg at an NBC Universal press event in March, covering everything from speculative Season 3 plans to the surprising Season 2 finale, which also debuted Wednesday.
And what a finale it was: [Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for “The Path” Season 2.] After Eddie Lane (Paul) discovered a devout following of “deserters” at his old house, he returned to the Meyerist compound to confront Cal (Hugh Dancy). Word had gotten out, to some degree, that Eddie was the rightful heir to Steven Meyer, not Cal, and after a season spent struggling with his faith,...

For anyone who’s been introduced to the world of cults through “Going Clear” (Lawrence Wright’s book or Alex Gibney’s documentary inspired by it), “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” or other, less celebrity-focused “movements,” the second season of “The Path” should serve as an ideal next step in learning how to think about the dangerous, addictive, and often completely legal faith organizations. Parallels to Scientology abound, especially when acquiring tax-exempt status drives the narrative.
But Season 2, like its stellar predecessor, isn’t trying to be a Scientology story. It’s not even primarily a cult story. Instead of aiming to recreate true events within its fictional world, Hulu’s compelling drama connects big bad cults and accepted religious institutions. Its subtle and direct threads carry immense power when tied together, making Season 2 neither a condemnation nor an endorsement of faith, but a call to see the light...

Warning: This post contains spoilers from both episodes of Wednesday’s Season 2 premiere of The Path. Proceed at your own peril.
Hulu’s cult drama The Path is back for Season 2, and although Wednesday’s two-part premiere cleared up some of the lingering mysteries from last season… it gave us a whole bunch of new ones to puzzle over.
What really went down between Eddie and Dr. Steven Meyer in Peru? Have Eddie and Sarah both moved onto new romantic partners following their separation? Is Cal going to sabotage the whole movement with his rash actions? If he doesn’t,...

Eddie Lane (Aaron Paul)
Where We Left Off: Eddie left the church after a series of disconcerting events — including visions of a giant snake — that forced him to question his faith. He separated from his wife, Sarah, because of his crisis of faith, as she could not remain married to a “denier” (someone who was part of the movement and left) under the rules of Meyerism. On advice from Richard (Clark Middleton), Eddie returned to Peru in search of explanations for his wild visions. There, he found the hospital where Meyerist founder Steven Meyer was incapacitated…but now he’s awake!
Prediction No. 1: Steve won’t give Eddie the answers he wants. Eddie arrived in Peru looking for proof that Meyerism was nothing but an ever-expanding lie, and finding Steve — awake, nonetheless — could provide him that very opportunity. But, even without meeting Steve, it seems unlikely he would turn into a denier himself.

You’ve heard of “binge viewing.” But video on-demand services are also popularizing another kind of TV experience: “snack viewing.”
According to Comcast Xfinity’s list of its subscribers’ most-viewed on-demand series in 2016, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” was easily No. 1. Not only are viewers catching up with recent episodes, but the very first episode of the first season of “Game of Thrones” remains extremely popular on the service, per Steve Meyer, Comcast’s vice president for data strategy and analytics. That means new viewers are beginning their “Game of Thrones” journey all the time.
“It’s No. 1 even though not all of our subscribers have access to HBO,” Meyer said. “All of our subscribers have access to broadcast and cable VOD. So not only is ‘Game of Thrones’ No. 1 but it’s boxing above its weight class.”

As longtime showrunner of Friday Night Lights, Jason Katims was responsible not only for one of the great family TV dramas of all time, but one of the most fundamentally spiritual. Church only occasionally became a major plot point (usually when Smash was around), but the characters' religion was presented upfront as a core part of who they were and what they cared about. On other shows like Parenthood and the short-lived Relativity, Katims and his writers have done a great job illustrating what happens when the lives of the devout get tangled up with non-believers, or with people who belong to another religion altogether. So when you put Katims on a show where religion — specifically, a religious cult — is the chief subject, and give him a cast with Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, and Hugh Dancy at the center, you should have something pretty special, right? Unfortunately, The Path — created...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

hollywoodnews.com: Over the weekend, the Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Ves Awards ceremony, recognizing summer tentpoles (“Harry Potter,” “Captain America”) and surprise hits (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Hugo”) for their outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.
“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We’re honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time.”
