The best golfers in the world will descend on Augusta National this week for the 2024 Masters. He’ll be looking to get fitted for another, along with big names like Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Tony Finau, and Rory McIlroy. The tournament gets started on Thursday, April 11, and runs through Sunday, April 14, with ESPN and CBS — as well as their sibling outlets and streamers — covering the entire weekend. In order to watch all of the action, The Streamable recommends a 5-Day Free Trial of Directv Stream.

The 2024 Masters Golf Tournament gets underway from Augusta National this week, with many of the names you’ve come to know like Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson, and some names you may come to learn – like Akshay Bhatia. Bhatia won the second PGA event of his career last weekend in an epic sudden-death victory at the Valero Texas Open, where he dislocated his shoulder while fist-pumping a must-make putt to force sudden death. He went on to beat Denny McCarthy in the extra hole to clinch his first-ever appearance at the Masters. How’s that for a Masters appetizer? The first round of the 2024 Masters gets underway on Thursday, April 11, and runs until Sunday, April 14, with coverage across ESPN and CBS. The two networks’ sibling channels and streamers will also be providing coverage throughout the weekend.

Noting that his first two appearances were “very controversial” sparking “a lot of discourse,” the revenant “Daily Show” anchor John Stewart figured he’d go with something easy (“an amuse-bouche”) for his third weekly shift: solving the eternal conflict between nations in the Middle East.
The 22-time Emmy-winner and two-time Grammy-winner called the segment “The Futile Crescent” Stewart did what Gen X-ers are born to do. He lampooned all sides.
First, he poked holes in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s master plan of (what seems like) bombing the Gaza Strip into ash as a way to solve problems. Stewart pointed out what many have been saying from day one—that this will only inspire the growth of several new Hamas-like militants, flashing back to the image of George W. The U.S. Department of Justice will review a proposed deal between the PGA tour and the Saudi Arabian owners of Liv Golf to determine whether it violates federal antitrust laws.
In a public statement, the PGA Tour said, “We are confident that once all stakeholders learn more about how the PGA Tour will lead this new venture, they will understand how it benefits our players, fans and sport while protecting the American institution of golf.”
The PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, or Public Investment Fund (Pif), negotiated secretly for two months about a merger. The deal would allow the PGA Tour, European tour and Pif to combine commercial business into an autonomous, for-profit entity. None of the players were made aware of the agreement prior to its announcement.

Ending two years of rancor and legal warfare, the PGA Tour has agreed to merge with Saudi-backed Liv Golf.
In a joint statement, the two organizations declared the stunning turn of events “a landmark agreement to unify the game of golf, on a global basis.” Technically, the pact that was announced is a framework for a deal, with a finalized version expected in the coming weeks.
The new spirit of comity represents a significant departure from the barbed exchanges between the parties in dueling antitrust lawsuits as well as players and fans on opposite sides of the split. The upstart Liv maintained that the well-entrenched PGA had engaged in anticompetitive practices by punishing its players, while PGA objected to Liv coming into its turf and poaching talent with hefty payouts.

In a move that practically no one in the sports or broadcasting worlds saw coming, it was on Tuesday that the PGA Tour and Liv Golf will merge in an effort to promote golf around the world. The two rival tours will also unite with Dp World Tour — the PGA’s European Tour — to form a new commercial entity to promote all of the brands in order to deliver “maximum excitement and competition among the game’s best players,” according to a press release issued by the PGA Tour.
While the three tours will continue to exist and operate independently, Liv’s parent company Public Investment Fund (Pif) will make a capital investment into the new commercial enterprise, whose name will be announced at a later date. Pif is run and funded by Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has been accused of crimes against humanity and the brutal murder of Suadi-American journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Augusta, April 9 (Ians) Brooks Koepka added one more birdie to his total to get to 13-under, even as his closest rival, Jon Rahm, slipped from 10-under to nine-under and the lead had swelled to four shots at the 87th Masters.
The play was suspended just as the lead trio approached the seventh green, which itself had a lot of water. That means the lead group, Koepka, Rahm and amateur Sam Bennett will need to play almost 30 holes on Sunday.
Augusta National officials announced that play will resume on Sunday at 8.30 am and the final round with players starting from first and tenth is expected to begin at 12.30 pm.
By the time play was called off, Koepka with a customary birdie on the Par-5 second — his seventh on a Par-5 apart from one eagle — had moved to 13-under, while Rahm, who started the third round at 10-under, picked a shot on...

Tom Carter, president and COO of The CW parent Nexstar Media Group, said the debut of Saudi-backed Liv Golf in late-February was a hit and could help pave the way for more sports coming to the network.
“It was very successful from our perspective,” Carter said during an appearance at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. He said the average hourly audience was about 500,000, which he said was one-quarter to one-third the size of rival PGA Tour broadcasts of the same weekend’s Honda Classic. “But the PGA’s been around for 40 years and this was Liv’s first broadcast. Nexstar acquired 75% ownership of The CW last fall for no upfront cash or stock considerations, instead agreeing to take on the debt of the network that had been a “financial disaster,” in Carter’s words. Prior joint venture partners Paramount and...

The debut of live sports on The CW didn’t make much of a dent with viewers.
The network’s inaugural broadcasts of the Saudi-backed Liv Golf league drew an average of 288,500 viewers and a 0.18 household rating on Saturday and Sunday. By comparison, the weekend’s PGA Tour event averaged just under 2 million viewers — about seven times as many — over the same two days on NBC. The two Liv rounds on The CW also came in behind four PGA Tour telecasts on the Golf Channel.
Despite the small numbers, however, the CEO of The CW’s parent company said on an earnings call Tuesday that he was pleased with Liv’s debut on the network.

Saudi Arabia and its sovereign wealth fund have quietly — and in some cases, not so quietly — built a multibillion-dollar foothold in Hollywood, four years after much of the industry cut ties with the country in response to the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
This time around, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, overseen by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, and other Saudi-affiliated firms appear to be betting that live entertainment, rich financial investments and sports can be the gateway to the American market.
In January alone, the Pif-backed Liv Golf scored a critical U.S. broadcast TV agreement with The CW, while the government-owned Middle East broadcast giant Mbc Group cut a deal with Vice Media to create Arabic-language content. Earlier, Saudi soccer team Al Nassr signed Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for 200 million a year. And if the second edition of the Red Sea Film Festival,...

The CW is officially getting into the Liv Golf business.
The Nexstar-owned broadcast network has signed a multi-year deal with the startup golf association, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Under the terms of the deal The CW will air 14 Liv Golf events in 2023, beginning with a tournament to be held in Mexico Feb. 24-26. The tournaments will air live on The CW and stream on the CW app on Saturdays and Sundays, with the Friday matches streaming on the app.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the two sides were “very close” to a deal.
Notably, Liv Golf will continue to produce its own event coverage for the 2023 tournament season (it produced the 2022 season, which it streamed on its YouTube channel). Arlo White will return as play-by-play host with David Feherty and Jerry Foltz serving as analysts.

After a rocky rollout, the Liv Golf tour is closing in on its first U.S. national TV deal.
A source familiar with the talks tells The Hollywood Reporter that the Saudi Arabia-backed golf tour is “very close” to a TV deal with The CW, the broadcast network now owned by local TV giant Nexstar. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount also have small stakes in the network.
Specific details of the deal are not yet known (after initially asking for rights fees like other leagues and tours such as the PGA, NBA and NFL receive, Liv is said to have been open to more of a revenue-sharing model), but would nonetheless mark a significant move for the tour, which has waged a bitter public battle with the PGA over the last year or so.

Berlin, Aug 25 (Ians) Rory McIlroy believes the announced enhancements to the PGA Tour are “a great step in the right direction” as the battle with the Liv Golf Invitational Series rages on.
On Wednesday, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan introduced several changes to the Tour, with the key emphasis on bringing the leading players together more often, reports Dpa.
The announcements came after Tiger Woods and other leading players met last week to discuss what the PGA Tour should do going forward.
Liv Golf has sent shockwaves through the sport with many high-profile players making the switch to the Saudi-backed tour, including Phil Mickelson, and the Open winner Cameron
Smith is reportedly set to follow suit.
Other alterations announced included a commitment from top players to feature in at least 20 PGA Tour events per year, an expansion to the player impact program and the guarantee of minimum earnings for full Tour members.

Rumors have swirled of late that the latest big name who may decamp to the Saudi-backed Liv golf tour is TNT NBA analyst and onetime owner of the worst swing in golf, Charles Barkley.
PGA legend Greg Norman is the league’s CEO, and big name U.S. players like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson have already signed on for eye-popping sums. Tiger Woods turned Liv down.
Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and questions about the country’s ties to the Sept. 11 attacks have many reluctant to partner with Liv for any price. Indeed, families of 9/11 victims have called the decision to go forward this weekend with an Liv tournament at Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, not far from where the attacks took place, “offensive, disrespectful and hurtful.”

The 122nd U.S. Open Championship tees off Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, for the year’s third major tournament. Defending champion Jon Rahm (pictured) faces top contenders in Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland, and world No. 1 and current Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. The controversy surrounding the Liv Golf Invitational Series — the new pro golf tour financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund — remains a top story surrounding the U.S. Open. Since the U.S. Open is a Usga event, players suspended by the PGA Tour can still participate. Phil Mickelson, who has been one of the most outspoken supporters of Liv Golf, will play in this week’s tournament after skipping the Masters and the PGA Championship. After an incredible comeback at this year’s Masters, Tiger Woods will not play in the U.S. Open and will instead focus on...

They don’t need pro golfers to keep the celebrity “Match” going over at Turner Sports.
In the first edition of the golf event to take place under the corporate aegis of the newly-merged Warner Bros. Discovery, four legendary NFL quarterbacks will take to the links on June 1 in a two-on-two competition that is, once again, sponsored by Capital One and broadcast on the cable network TNT. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, who competed against each other last year, will team up and square off against Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in a 12-hole challenge at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Originally launched in 2018 as a pay-per-view event, “The Match” represents a bid by Turner, which has historically kept one of the smaller sports-rights portfolios among U.S. media companies, to expand without having to rely on traditional sports leagues. Dave Grohl joined Jimmy Fallon at 30 Rock on Monday to co-host The Tonight Show. In their opening monologue—in which the pair went back and forth, with set-up and punchline—they touched on everything from the return of a canceled celebrity to Timothy Chalamet’s surprising new role.
“You know Dave, if things go well here, this could be the big break you’ve been waiting for,” Fallon joked, as he brought the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer to the stage.
“I’m really happy to be here,” Grohl deadpanned. “This is definitely one of the coolest things that I’ve done today.”
Turning to the news, Fallon noted that Covid cases in the U.S. have dropped to their lowest level in almost a year. “Pretty soon,” he predicted, “the only place you’ll see Dr. Fauci is popping out of a costume on The Masked Singer.

Phil Mickelson made golf history on Sunday, winning the PGA Championship to not only earn his sixth major title but also become the oldest player ever to win a major tournament.
The 50-year-old veteran broke a record that has stood since 1968, when Julius Boros won the PGA Championship in 1968 at the age of 48. It is Mickelson’s second PGA Championship victory, following one in 2005. It also joins his Masters victories in 2004, 2006 and 2010, as well as a 2013 Open Championship title on his list of major victories.
Mickelson held off challenges from fellow major winners Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen, winning by two strokes with a score of six-under-par. As Mickelson approached the 18th green to cement his victory, fans at Kiawah Island swarmed the course behind him in a scene reminiscent of Tiger Woods’ historic victory at the Masters two years ago.

An official statement posted to Tiger Woods’ Twitter account on Tuesday evening said the golfer suffered “comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula” in a car accident earlier in the day.
A comminuted bone is broken into more than two pieces. An open fracture, also called a compound fracture, is a fracture in which there is an open wound or break in the skin near the site of the broken bone.
The statement said the golf legend “underwent a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle.”
Woods is “awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room,” according to the post.
Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-ucla Medical Center where Woods was admitted said a rod, pins and screws were used to stabilize his injuries.

As good a basketball player as Charles Barkley was during his long NBA career, he never won a championship. Thus, today’s victory in the televised golf showdown known as The Match was extra sweet.
Barkley and pro golfer Phil Mickelson were easy winners over opponents Stephen Curry of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and retired Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning in the third iteration of The Match on Friday in Arizona.
Entering the showdown, Barkley was considered a longshot to come out on top. His basketball talents notwithstanding, he is widely known as a poor golfer, something frequently joked about on the TNT show. But Mickelson and Barkley easily won the modified alternate shot match play exhibition 4&3 at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona.

Golf’s next big TV event will only feature one professional golfer on the green.
On the day after Thanksgiving, WarnerMedia’s TNT will feature the latest iteration of “The Match,” a celebrity-golf showdown that pits big-name athletes and sports figures against each other in a telecast that nods to charity and owes as much to spectacle as it does to competition. Phil Mickelson, a regular of the series, will team up with Charles Barkley to take on Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning — all in a broadcast that weaves advertisers deeply into the proceedings.
“What we are thinking of is a pop culture event that makes golf much more fast paced and is looking to younger viewers,” says Will Funk, executive vice president of sports partnerships and branded content at Turner Sports, the WarnerMedia sports division, in an interview. “This is a world-class golf competition meets ‘Dancing With The Stars.

Phil Mickelson won’t have to face Tiger Woods for the third edition of “The Match,” but he’ll also be stuck with a far worse golfing partner.

WarnerMedia wants to take another swing at celebrity golf.
The AT&T-owned media operation unveiled plans Monday for another of its golf telecasts featuring two celebrity teams squaring off against one another. The new foursome will feature Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley taking on Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning. The live golf competition is slated to air Friday, Nov. 27, at 3 p.m. eastern at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona, and represents another effort by Warner’s Turner Sports unit to develop game properties it controls more directly, rather than relying on steep licensing deals with various big sports leagues.
Capital One, which put ad support behind Turner’s Memorial Day weekend match between Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning and Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, will serve once again as the broadcast’s title sponsor. Michelob Ultra will serve as a presenting sponsor, while DraftKings will serve as a content integration partner.

Shaquille ONeal’s new deal with WarnerMedia will have him analyzing NBA games, but it could also put him in the wrestling ring and in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
The AT&T-owned entertainment company said Monday that it struck a new “multi-year” deal with the celebrated basketball analyst that will extend his reach beyond his regular duties on Turner Sports. O’Neal, who has been with Turner Sports since 2011 and is part of a broadcasting team that is a central element of the company’s NBA coverage, will executive-produce projects for the company’s Bleacher Report; develop a new show for NBA TV; be part of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage “for years to come”; distribute his podcast via WarnerMedia; and, potentially, appear in TNT’s coverage of All Elite Wrestling.
“Shaq is so critical to our success, and such a huge part of the...

Walmart has figured out a way to get its goods in front of shoppers – even if the effects of the coronavirus pandemic are keeping them from visiting its stores.
As part of an advertising agreement struck with Discovery, the large retailer will have products and ad messages woven into and around a new Hgtv series that has homeowners record themselves as they make over a room with the help of designers stationed remotely. The “self shot” series, “Design At Your Door,” debuts Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern.
Discovery has launched several so-called “quarantine” concepts featuring Guy Fieri or Amy Schumer with quick-turnaround deadlines to help fill its programming grid as the pandemic has forced normal production to cease. But the fast pivot has spurred the company’s ad-sales teams to work even faster to line up Madison Avenue support.
“Normally, we’d have 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 weeks, but not here,” says Greg Regis,...

Madison Avenue is calling for a different route for the billions of dollars it sends to TV networks every year.
A group representing the nation’s biggest advertisers has called for massive changes to TV’s “upfront” market, an annual ad-sales process in which U.S. TV networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial inventory for the next programming cycle. For decades, the networks have kicked off negotiations in mid-May, and tried to wrap them by summer’s end. The haggling has deep ties to historic business cycles: car companies used to unveil their new vehicle models in the fall, and so TV began to launch its new season at that time.
Regular cycles, however, have been upset by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. And the Association of National Advertisers, an industry organization that represents 1600 companies that spend more than $400 billion each year on advertising and marketing,...
