Peter Middleton and James Spinney have made a miraculous doc based on the audio recordings made by theologian John Hull after he became completely blind
After theologian John Hull lost his sight in the early 1980s, he began to document his observations on blindness on hundreds of cassette tapes. An academic dedicated to deep thinking, he spent years recording vignettes in a melancholy Australian lilt. This does not sound like the stuff of era-defining documentary, but Peter Middleton and James Spinney have made a miraculous piece of work that combines lip-synced recreations of Hull’s verbal adventures with stagings of Hull’s vivid dreams of sightedness.
Over 85 minutes, we dip in and out of the life of a man trapped in visual darkness, but whose imagination is ravishingly bright. Hull’s immaculately recorded tapes feature cameo appearances from his wife Marilyn and five children, documenting his gradual acceptance of blindness, understood through the comfort and routine of home and family life.

Further reminding us that the Academy Awards are irrelevant in year-end discussions for the best in documentary film, according to the experts at the Cinema Eye Honors’ voting committee, Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour, Steve James’ Life Itself and Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s 20,000 Days on Earth would be among the best docu films of the year, leading the pack in almost all categories. Not to be overlooked, Jesse Moss’ The Overnighters and Robert Greene’s Actress received kudos in Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking and Outstanding Achievement in Direction while the major surprise of the noms belongs to Orlando von Einsiedel’s Virunga (presented at the Tribeca and Hot Docs Film Fests) grabbing a total of three. Left completely off the scorecard, Manakamana failed to produce a single nom. The Cinema Eye Honors winners will be announced on Wednesday, January 7 at New York’s Museum of the Moving Image.

We're big fans of The New York Times' Op-Doc series, which offers a forum for opinionated documentaries produced in a variety of styles, all universally excellent. Recently, Op-Docs partnered with the Sundance Institute in a three-part series of videos produced by indie filmmakers. The New York Times's projects were among the first short films to screen at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival with "Allergy to Originality,” an animated Op-Doc by filmmaker Drew Christie and “Notes on Blindness," directed by Peter Middleton & James Spinney. All Op-Docs can be seen here. The third in the Sundance Institute of Op-Docs is "Sarah's Uncertain Path" by Andrew Droz Palermo and Tracy Droz Tragos, directors of the Sundance documentary "Rich Hill." Their short documentary profiles a pregnant teenager in Missouri. Watch it below:...

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite. In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments. "Into Darkness" Tweetable Logline: A journey into the world of blindness Elevator Pitch: In the summer of 1983, just days before the birth of his fist son, writer and theologian John Hull went blind. In order to make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. Over the next three years he kept this diary, excavating the interior world of blindness. The diaries were published in 1991 to wide critical acclaim. With exclusive access to these original recordings, "Into Darkness" is a cinematic documentary, encompassing dreams, memory and imaginative life, immersing the viewer in John’s experience of blindness. The odds of having your short film included in this year’s Sundance Film Festival are .008 percent. Out of the 66 short film line-up (selected among 8,161 submissions) we find actress Rose McGowan move behind the camera for her directing debut (Dawn), we have Ain’t Them Bodies Saints producer Toby Halbrooks shovel out Dig (see pic above) and Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) returns to the fest in between features with Rat Pack Rat. Filmmaker Magazine New Faces of Independent Film director Dean Fleischer-Camp rolls up his shirt sleeves with Catherine, Matthew Lessner returns to Park City with the helping hand Chapel Perilous while The Strange Ones (’11 accepted short) co-helmer Christopher Radcliff won’t be making a dissappearing act with Jonathan’s Chest. Finally docu feature-film helmer Lucy Walker moves into The Lion’s Mouth Opens. I’ll of course be covering several of these – look out for our coverage.

Short films can go a long way. Especially when they’re showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival’s Shorts program, which was announced today, has a tradition of identifying remarkable filmmakers as well as introducing stories that ultimately make it to the big-screen as features. For example, David O. Russell brought his first film, a short titled Bingo Inferno to Sundance in 1987, while Half Nelson, which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, grew out of Ryan Fleck’s 2004 Sundance short titled, Gowanus, Brooklyn. “If you look back at the directors who got their start by having a short at Sundance,...

As if we didn't already know how accomplished Kate Middleton is, it turns out that she can fly, too! Well, not all by herself, but in an airplane. While riding a Routemaster bus along with husband Prince William in honor of London Poppy Day and the Royal British Legion, the Duchess of Cambridge, whose late grandfather Peter Middleton was a Royal Air Force pilot, revealed that she has "had a few lessons on fixed wing." We're surprised that Kate didn't just take a turn driving the bus as well! Chatting aboard the retro ride with actress Barbara Windsor and newsreader Alastair Stewart, Kate said that their recently christened son, Prince George, had been "half...

Kate Middleton and Prince William proudly wore red poppy pins as they met with poppy sellers at London tube stations during Poppy Day in England. The two rode a public bus with several other Poppy Day VIPs and arrived at the High Street subway station to chat with volunteers with the Royal British Legion, one of the charities that sells red poppies to raise funds for members of the British Armed Forces and their families. The red poppies are popular ahead of Remembrance Day (the British version of what we call Veterans Day), and many celebrities can be seen wearing the red pins ahead of Nov. 11. The Duchess of Cambridge braved the chilly weather in a red coat by L.K.Bennett (which she previously wore to an event in 2011), black tights, and matching black heels, while the Duke of Cambridge wore a simple navy suit. It looked as if...

Prince William and Kate surprised commuters at a London tube station Thursday when they visited volunteers raising money for war veterans. They took a specially chartered red London bus a short quarter mile from their palace home to the High Street Kensington station. There, they met and chatted with charity workers who were selling the traditional red poppy emblems Britons wear to commemorate casualties of war. William and Kate, both 31, were helping to promote a Royal British Legion bid to raise £1.6 million (or $2.5 million) for the charity in a single day in the capital. The couple, who had left aides watching their 3-½-month-old son,...

Prince William and Kate will get a taste of the Old West when they visit North America next month - even if the cattle rodeo they'll witness will be in Calgary, Canada. Plans for the royal couple's 11-day tour were announced Monday, and, among the sights they'll see, the two will experience "the diversity, vibrancy of Canada, its geography and people," says a source at St. James's Palace. The full schedule will not be available until mid-June, those close to them already call the trip a "most significant moment, because it's their first royal tour." Related: William & Kate Set a...
