Written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first DC Elseworlds story, which was lauded following its alternate take on the Batman mythos. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Batman’s quest to apprehend Jack the Ripper, based on the infamous real-life serial killer, and the story was finally adapted into an animated feature in 2018.
However, the animated feature didn’t see Kevin Conroy return to voice the caped crusader, and per Bruce Timm, it was due to marketing reasons.

Comic book horror is thriving and there's no shortage of great storytelling in sight, especially with the announcement of a brand-new fictional universe from Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck. Starting this December, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the first release from Curious Objects, Mike Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse Comics that will "set the stage for more weird, wicked, and whimsical stories in the 'Lands Unknown' universe."
"In Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the stories are fantastical, odd and charming — from a search for the beating heart of a long-dead sorcerer, to a pirate girl who makes a deal with the devil, to the titular boy who wins a grim prize in a game with undead interlopers." The anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories is written and illustrated by Mike Mignola, with colors by Dave Stewart,...

"Invincible" season 2 just wrapped (read our review here). While the long gap after season 1 slowed down the excitement, the second season kept the show's quality soaring higher than a Viltrumite.
"Invincible" may stream on Prime Video, but its origin story lies at Image Comics. Image was founded in 1992 as counter-programming to the Marvel/DC comics duopoly; the founders included '90s comic superstars like Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee (the man who rebranded the X-Men for the '90s). The "I" on Invincible's costume? It doesn't just stand for "Invincible," but "Image" too.
At Marvel and DC, the publishers own the characters and cycle out writers/artists at the popular ones. Image, on the other hand, specializes in creator-owned comics where writers and artists retain authority. That's why "Invincible" was personally created by Robert Kirkman, author of the comics. It wasn’t until I started writing this article that I remembered something. A new Hellboy movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is coming soon, likely to see release sometime this year.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year to Millennium Media’s reboot, which will star Jack Kesy in the title role. But we’ll report more on that project in the coming months.
In the meantime, Deadline has announced today that a documentary on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, is also coming soon.
Deadline reports that Nacelle (“The Toys That Made Us”) has acquired the doc, with no release date announced at this time. The documentary “tells the story of Mignola — one of the most successful independent comic book creators, who has inspired generations of writers and artists — and how he came to create a world-renowned comic book universe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made Bruce Banner/The Hulk into just one more of the Avengers. His most recent MCU appearances, "Avengers: Endgame" and "She-Hulk," have ditched the man and monster dichotomy altogether; the Hulk is now just a green and buff Bruce.
For all his personal faults, Joss Whedon was the last writer/director to explore the Hulk's tragedy in his two "Avengers" films. The nascent team's climactic argument in "The Avengers," when Banner silences the room by revealing he "got low, so he put a bullet in [his] mouth, and the other guy spit it out" has real dramatic gravitas.
However, the MCU has altogether elided where that tragedy begins. In the comics, Dr. Bruce Banner was already a troubled man before the gamma bomb explosion that changed his life. Banner's father Brian was a nuclear psychist convinced his own radiation exposure turned his son into a monster.

Hellboy is one of the most successful superhero comic characters outside of the Marvel/DC duopoly; his adventures bridge the gaps between fantasy, horror, and good old-fashioned pulp.
In 1944, Nazis led by Grigori Rasputin opened a portal to Hell to summon the harbinger of the apocalypse. They succeeded — the being in question was a demon child named Anung Un Rama ( "And upon his brow is set a crown of flame"). The Nazis were defeated by Allied soldiers and the child was adopted by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and named Hellboy. Professor "Broom" raised his son into the top agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (The Bprd); Hellboy approaches his job with the attitude of a working stiff and is really unenthusiastic about his destiny to destroy the world.

"The holiday season is full of cherished traditions: gatherings with family and friends, exchanging gifts, and, for discerning readers, the publication of the annual Hellboy Winter Special. This year, ahead of the winter solstice, Dark Horse Comics will publish the Hellboy Winter Special: The Yule Cat one-shot, written and illustrated by Barbarian Lord creator and acclaimed cartoonist Matt Smith, colored by Chris O’Halloran, lettered by Clem Robins, and featuring a variant cover by legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. The special one-shot is inspired by the stories of Jólakötturinn, the ferocious Yule Cat of Icelandic folklore, who is said to come down from the mountains, on the prowl for people who have not received any new clothes to wear before Christmas Eve."
In Hellboy Winter Special: The Yule Cat, Hellboy travels to Reykjavik, "where children are disappearing and a giant beast has been spotted…could it be the infamous Yule Cat of Icelandic lore?...

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
Having written this column for over a year now I am starting to notice some distinctive trends in my monthly activity throughout the year. I had touched on elements of this in previous instalments but in a nutshell the trends can be defined as simply as this:
Busy months – January, March, May, October, November & December Busy days – Monday & Thursday Busiest hours – 6-8am Thursday
It will come as no surprise to regular readers that the busiest hours in the week immediately follow the release of new stock in the store on a Thursday. At a guess I would say that Monday is busy because people casually browse the website...

We used to call games like this “shovelware.” Hellboy Web of Wyrd wasn’t made to do much more than attract fans of the character. It kills time, and that’s about it.
It’s honestly a shame. This might be the single best video game recreation of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola’s atmospheric art style. The cel-shaded graphics and heavy use of shadow make Web of Wyrd, in its best moments, look exactly like the comic. It also features the late Lance Reddick as the voice of Hellboy, and Reddick never had a poor performance in his life.
As a game, however, Web of Wyrd is a shooting gallery. It’s not offensively bad, but it isn’t particularly entertaining either. You explore a surreal dungeon, punch animated statues, gather currency and upgrades, then go back to base and do it all over again. Every enemy is either a...

Having read the first issue of Giant Robot Hellboy, I can confidently say that Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo have, once again, created something truly special and I'm so excited for Daily Dead readers to check it out for themselves when it's released by Dark Horse Comics on October 25th. However, you don't have to wait until next week, as we have preview pages and details from Duncan Fegredo on the creative process in our Q&a:
You and Mike Mignola have worked together on some of Hellboy's best stories. How did your collaboration on Giant Robot Hellboy come about?
Duncan Fegredo: Giant Robot Hellboy was one of those ideas Mike has had prowling around his mind since he drew that fateful sketch during the pandemic. DC Comics will resurrect their 'out-of-continuity', "Elseworlds" concepts, with new titles available in 2024, including "Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age", "Batman the Barbarian", "Green Lantern: Dark" and a whole lot more:
"...'Elseworlds' was established to feature DC characters in settings outside regular comic book continuity, with 'The Batman' movie franchise a prome example if this imaginative shift."
"Out-of-continuity stories have always been a pillar of DC publishing, granting creators the ability to explore all the wild corners of the 'DC Universe'", said DC Editor Ben Abernathy. "We’re excited to bring a whole new slate of titles under the 'Elseworlds' banner in 2024, combining some all-new titles from top storytellers, as well as sequels from the current DC line that fit that same out-of-continuity aesthetic."
Writers and illustrators include Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola, Greg Smallwood, Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons.

Hellboy finally returns to video games on October 18th with Hellboy: Web of Wyrd. The roguelike brawler will put players in the shoes of the “world’s greatest paranormal investigator” as he encounters the mysterious Butterfly House that acts as a portal to the dimension of Wyrd. In Wyrd, Hellboy will encounter horrors beyond human comprehension and be forced to relive Groundhog Day-like scenarios over and over again.
What really makes Web of Wyrd stick out is its killer art style that brings to life the gorgeous comic book art by Mike Mignola. With this visual standpoint, developers Upstream Arcade have collaborated with Dark House and Mignola to craft a wholly original Hellboy story set in the world of the comics. While most fans’ first exposure to the world and character may have been the films over the years, for many this may be their first foray into the world of the comics.

For a comic book movie franchise that has never reached the heights of most Marvel or DC films of the last two decades, "Hellboy" has remained shockingly resilient. To that end, Mike Mignola's beloved character is set for yet another big-screen reboot in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." This time around, the character will be headed back to the 1950s for a folk horror adventure based on one the most celebrated storylines from the comics.
This will be the character's first film since 2019's "Hellboy." Starring David Harbour, it proved to be a critical and commercial disaster. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is set to try to bring the character to life once again with a lower-budget take on the material. So, when will you be able to see the movie? Who is playing Hellboy? Who is directing this time around? We've got all of...

There isn’t another filmmaker quite like Guillermo del Toro.
While he’s been working since 1993, he’s only made 12 films. But each one of those films is so singularly well-crafted and emotionally resonant, that they stand out as being unlike any other films being made today (or really at any other time). Del Toro stuffs these bejeweled treasures, made with clockwork intricacy, full of ghosts and ghouls and phantasmagorical creatures. But they are also populated with human characters who sport actual and psychic scars, made whole or irreparably damaged by their encounter with the unknown. Whether in English or Spanish, with the tiniest budget or the most expansive, del Toro maintains his creative vision through it all.
It’s with this in mind that we look back at his entire filmography, from the least to most mind-altering.

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. The film is a Millennium Media production, and since Millennium was also behind the newly released The Expendables 4 (or Expend4bles), our own Chris Bumbray was able to talk to the company’s Les Weldon, who is a producer on both Expend4bles and Hellboy: The Crooked Man. During their conversation, Weldon revealed that we should expect this new film to be the darkest, creepiest Hellboy movie yet.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

The video game Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is heading our way from developer Upstream Arcade and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment – but it’s going to arrive two weeks later than previously expected. While an October 4th release date had been announced for the game, it has now been pushed back to October 18th. The episode of Revisited covering the 2004 version of Hellboy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Comic book adaptations are everywhere these days, but in the early 2000s, they were a bit more of a rarity. There were some, but not a ton. 2004 saw a group of comic book adaptations come out including Immortal and Renegade and movies like Constantine, Aeon Flux, and Sin City were announced for 2005. One movie that came out in 2004 and made an impression, positioning the director, Guillermo del Toro, for much bigger things was Hellboy (watch it Here). This was his follow-up to the fantastic Blade II and, thus, not his first foray into comic book movies.

Fans eager to give Hellboy another chance on the silver screen rejoice! Ketchup Entertainment snagged the rights to Millennium Media‘s Hellboy: The Crooked Man, starring Jack Kesy as the kitten-loving, pancake-eating demon with an attitude and guns under his trenchcoat. Brian Taylor directs from a script by Christopher Golden, inspired by the Dark Horse comic book series created by Mike Mignola.
In Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Big Red and a rookie Brpd agent become stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia, only to discover a small community haunted by witches, led by the Crooked Man. “According to local legend, Jeremiah Witkins was one of the first settlers in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia,” says the Hellboy Wiki about the Crooked Man. “He built his house in an area called The Hurricane. He was also one of the worst men in his lifetime, amassing his fortune from the misery of others. Stirring...

At this year’s Gamescom we tried to stack our schedule with as many horror (or horror-adjacent) titles as we possibly could.
Rushing around the expansive halls of the Koelnmesse venue — trying to make each of our back-to-back appointments — we barely had chance to catch our breath across the jam-packed three days we were there. Among other things, we previewed nearly an hour of Alan Wake 2, got the inside scoop on Still Wakes the Deep, had a lengthy hands-on session with Lords of the Fallen, and then went on a perilous expedition into the bowels of Moria.
But that only represents a small fraction of the exciting projects we saw here. In addition to those big tentpoles, we also took a look at the efforts of some plucky solo devs and indie studios who’ve been working away on interesting little titles that you might be sleeping on.

Video games can break your heart. It is a business built on creativity, scheduling, manpower, collaboration, and customer demand. Not everything works out. A company can have a brilliant concept and all the talent, but due to a few bad decisions or lack of funds, it could come out as a husk of what it was meant to be.
At least those failed games get to hit the shelf, though. Some dreams lead to dead ends. Amazing game designs never see the light of day for one reason or another. Maybe you have an interesting idea for a Mario spinoff that Nintendo shoots down. Maybe you put work into a game based on a popular movie that the higher-ups decide is not economically viable. Maybe your violent fighting game is nixed because the people you work for are bought out by another company who do not agree with your vision.

We know what you’re thinking. You like Hellboy but think there’s something missing. Like, maybe a little…mecha.
Well, for those thinking exactly that, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has heard your cries of woe and answered them.
Mignola has reunited with artist Duncan Fegredo for Giant Robot Hellboy, a three-issue mini-series that promises to be exactly what the title lays out, a Hellboy that is one giant mecha.
Mignola wrote the series while Fegredo, with whom the creator worked on Hellboy: Darkness Calls, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, and Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury, is handling the art. The comic will mark Fegredo’s first interior work since 2019 as the artist has focused mostly on covers since then. Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and longtime Hellboy Universe letterer Clem Robins are also on the book.

Announced way back in December, Good Shepherd Entertainment and developer Upstream Arcade have finally given those interested in their upcoming action roguelite Hellboy: Web of Wyrd a taste of the gameplay with a brand-new trailer. Revealed during the ID@Xbox Digital Showcase, the gameplay trailer shows off and some of the gameplay features of Web of Wyrd, including its locations, and Hellboy doing what he does best in punching the crap out of enemies.
Featuring an original story created in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Web of Wyrd sends Hellboy “on a series of vastly different and wholly unique adventures” that are all tied to the mysterious Butterfly House.
Built in 1962 by occultist Pasquale Deneveaux, The Butterfly House is actually a gateway into a terrible and fascinating dimension called The Wyrd. A B.P.R.D. agent sent on a reconnaissance mission to the mansion and promptly goes missing.

Millennium Media is developing a new live-action Hellboy film, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, with Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Mom and Dad) directing the movie. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to social media to reveal that principal photography has wrapped.
Mignola said via Instagram, “I wasn’t on set for this one but they have been nice enough to send me dailies and I have to say I have loved what I’ve been seeing. If fans have been waiting for a Hellboy film that is actually an adaptation of one of my stories I think they are finally going to get one.”
The story is said to “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”
“The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches,...
