Jeff Burr, director of “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” “From a Whisper to a Scream” and “Straight Into Darkness,” has died. He was 60.
Director-writer Jim Wynorski shared the news of Burr’s death on Facebook, writing that he “passed away last night [Oct. 10] in his sleep.”
Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. He later directed several entries in the “Pumpkinhead” and “Puppet Master” franchises, including “Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings” (1993), “Puppet Master 4” (1993), “Puppet Master 5” (1995) and “Puppet Master: Blitzkrief Massacre” (2018).
Burr was born in Aurora, Ohio, on July 18, 1963, and grew up in Dalton, Ga. He attended USC, but dropped out after his third year alongside fellow director Kevin Meyer to finish their American civil war short “Divided We Fall.” His feature-length directorial debut was 1987’s “From a Whisper to a Scream,” starring Vincent Price, Clu Gulager and Terry Kiser.

Jeff Burr, the horror specialist who directed Vincent Price in one of his last movies and entries in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, has died. He was 60.
Burr died Tuesday in his sleep in Dalton, Georgia, of apparent complications from a stroke, his longtime friend, actor Eric Spudic, told The Hollywood Reporter.
After several other directors had dropped out, Burr came aboard at the last minute to helm New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), this installment starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain.
He said it took 11 tries before the MPAA would sign off on an ‘R’ rating for the film, which grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
Burr went on to direct Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).

Now available for consoles and PC, Gun Interactive’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre pulls inspiration from Tobe Hooper’s original classic for a multiplayer horror game (read our review), featuring Leatherface alongside both new and classic villains from the original movie. The actor who did the motion capture work for Leatherface in the game? Kane Hodder!
This is insanely cool casting for multiple reasons, one of which is that Hodder actually did Leatherface stunt work back in the ’90s for New Line’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.
Kane Hodder was the third film’s stunt coordinator, which led to him actually playing the role of Leatherface for several scenes. R.A. Mihailoff is credited as Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, but from what we gather, Hodder did many of the stunts and action scenes.

A couple months ago, we looked back at the 1988 film Pumpkinhead with an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series. Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. To find out why we think Pumpkinhead II deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Jeff Burr from a screenplay written by Constantine Chachornia and Ivan Chachornia, Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings has the following synopsis: In a small Kansas town in 1958, a group of teenagers torture and kill a disfigured orphan named Tommy. After 35 years, another gang of teens robs the cabin of an old witch. Using some blood and a spell taken from her house, the...

Here is a list of some of the best. While a few of them are a bit obvious because we can’t skip on the classics, others will be harder to find titles that are absolutely worth looking for. Without further ado, here are our picks for the Best Slasher Movies Ever:
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Let’s start with the undisputed king, Mr. Wes Craven and his creation, the one and only Freddy Krueger. Now, why does this particular duo rule this sub-genre? Well, Craven established many rules with his take on the slasher and the...

His name’s Robert Englund, and for 35 years, you’ve probably referred to him as Freddy Krueger. Believe it or not, that’s about as long as it’s been since Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street first hit theaters, and among the several spinoffs and sequels it’s spawned, the film’s become a cult horror classic.
A lot of this acclaim can surely be attributed to Englund, whose eerie performance as the iconic dream-hunter has become a staple of scream cinema – showcased in seven additional films ranging from 1985 to 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. So it makes sense that people want to know his story.

Despite the fact that we were granted a Freddy vs. Jason movie in 2003, we never really got what fans had been clamoring for – and that was essentially Robert Englund vs. Kane Hodder. To many, Hodder was the definitive Jason Voorhees, so that wish made sense. Regardless, the studio went in another direction and placed Ken Kirzinger under the hockey mask instead.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to play favorites. I’ve met both Hodder and Kirzinger, and they’re great guys. Still, none of us can help pondering “what if?” scenarios had another director been at the helm or another screenplay settled upon.
Fortunately, anybody attending Monster-Mania Con later this summer will receive what’s probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a photo with both Robert Englund and Kane Hodder. But if that weren’t enough, Hodder will don his costume from Jason X for the shoot!

Although many actors have become typecast or mainstays in the horror genre (that’s certainly not a bad thing because it can keep you employed for life), there aren’t as many who can say that they’ve inhabited more than one iconic role. Fortunately for Kane Hodder, the former Jason Voorhees has kept lovers of the macabre entertained in recent years as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet series of films. Granted, the latter is less mainstream than the former, but our point remains valid.
In addition to having those two notches on his belt, Hodder can also lay claim to having played Leatherface for a few scenes, having been R.A. Mihailoff’s stunt double on Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III – which earned him the most bizarre of cameos in Freddy vs. Jason, mind you- in addition to Freddy Krueger for a brief moment. You know, I can get behind bad films; I can get behind films made intentionally to be bad (the “so bad its good” type of flicks) but there’s no way I can get behind a film whose sole purpose it seems is to rip-off other intentionally badly-made movies. That’s just lazy filmmaking.

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and Us horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

Sometimes you just don’t know who is a horror fan. I am surprised every now and again what I saw this past week was no exception. I’m talking about a film called Smothered which was directed by none other than Smallville and Dukes of Hazard’s John Schneider. Smothered boasts the largest collection of horror icons on one screen ever and it’s great to see them together. There is a lot of heart in the film and it shows when our group of horror actors are taking a moment to reflect on their careers. Kane Hodder and R.A. Mihailoff steal most of the show with great and very funny performances but everyone has their time to shine.

With Halloween in the air, we thought it would be fun to reach out to the horror genre's biggest and brightest stars - both legends in the industry and up-and-coming superstars - to ask them two quick questions: What's your biggest fear, and what's your favorite scary movie? Read on for the results!
Some of the results will make you laugh. Some will make you shiver... and some, well some are just too funny for words. Sit back and get ready to hear from the likes of Anne Rice, John Carpenter, Robert Englund, the "Ghost Adventures" crew, cast members from "The Walking Dead," George A. Romero, and many - Many - more. Who knows? You may even find some new movies you should check out or at least revisit.

Just to be up front with you faithful readers, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is my favorite of the series for both personal and sentimental reasons. While I watched the first two entries in the series countless times on VHS, the 3rd one was the first that I got to see on the big screen. And not only that, but because I was about 15 at the time, I had to wait several hours outside the theater and beg an older couple to pretend to be my legal guardians so I could get in. Thankfully, someone took pity on me and let me come in with them. And after it was over, I wasn’t aware of the tremendous production problems that delayed it from a November 1989 release date to January 1990. I didn’t know about the massive battle with the MPAA to get the film down to an R rating.

A couple of days ago we gave you your first look at Axelle Carolyn's latest short film, Hooked, and now? Well now, dearest reader, you can dig on the whole enchilada yourself! All one hundred twenty seconds of it!
With a tagline of "There's Always a Bigger Fish", Hooked is available now via FEARnet. The flick stars R.A. Mihailoff along with the lovely Clare Grant. Will Barratt (Hatchet, Frozen) handled director of photography duties, and Joe Bishara (Insidious) doled out the tunes.
"It's a very silly, very brief little twist on the slasher genre," says Carolyn. "We shot it in a few hours on a beach in La just before 4th of July. I just wanted to make something very different from my previous short, The Last Post (review here), which was sad and emotional."

Axelle Carolyn - who is currently prepping a feature film - found some time to knock out a short during a stay in Los Angeles. Hooked was the outcome, a small slice of horror that made its premiere on FEARnet today. The cast is minimal: R.A. Mihailoff ( Leatherface , Hatchet II ) and Clare Grant ( Masters of Horror , Team Unicorn) star. Neil Marshall, Carolyn's hubby, co-produced with Theresa Eastman and Joe Bishara of Insidious provided the music. Take a look. Carolyn, author of "It Lives Again! Horror Movies in the New Millennium," talks about the project here .

We’ve been following filmmaker John Michael Elfer’s Kiss Before the Slaughter since its down and dirty desert shoot earlier this year, and now we are proud to offer you, our Dread Central readers, an early look at the project's high-octane trailer! Read on!
Voted onto the ‘Blood List’ of 2010 (an industry insider list of the top not-yet-produced horror scripts in Hollywood), Kiss Before the Slaughter follows the exploits of ex-paramours Bradley and Raquel (actors Chandler Maness and Natalie Pero, respectively), who journey to Mexico for a black-market lung transplant for the latter, only to discover an underground organization who butcher the unsuspecting ‘donors’ on which Raquel had relied. Struggling with both their mortality and morality, Raquel asks Bradley - in an effort to save the group of complete strangers which the organization have ensnared as ‘donors’ - that instead he let her die. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose.

Stars: Danielle Harris, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, Tom Holland | Written and Directed by Adam Green
Hatchet 2 picks up right where the original film left off – only this time it’s Danielle Harris playing Marybeth, with all the gusto and heart that is befitting one of horrors true unsung scream queens – Marybeth has escaped the clutches of the vicious Victor Crowley, only to learn the true horror of her connection to the hatchet faced psycho courtesy of Tony Todd’s Reverend Zombie. Teaming up with Zombie and a handful of hunters and poachers, Marybeth heads back into the swamp to retrieve the bodies of her now-departed family and face off against Victor Crowley to take him down once and for all. Only the good Reverend has a slightly different plan…

It may have hit DVD stores stateside early last month as well as On Demand but us Brits have had to bide our time hoping that at least one day we would see the DVD winking at us from afar in our local store. Well by god we're about to get it so much better! Adam Green's 'Hatchet II' will be getting a brief theatrical run here in the UK in a select number of theatres (and one near me, a-woo-hoo!) from this Friday. Those good folks over at the BBFC have rated it 18 with no cuts! Kane Hodder is back once again as the notorious Victor Crowley who'll be slicing and dicing his way through the cast that includes Danielle Harris (Rob Zombie's 'Halloween'), Tony Todd ('Candyman'), Parry Shen, Tom Holland, R.A. Mihailoff and Aj Bowen. You can check out a list of...

See how simple that was? No police in theatres. No shutdowns. No silly controversy. Just pay for your ticket and see a movie about a swamp monster with a wireless belt sander. That's right, kids! The UK will be getting Hatchet II as it was meant to be seen when it opens there in theatres this week. Free of all the MPAA stupidity and hoopla.
According to Adam Green -- "Hatchet II has received an 18 Rating with No cuts enforced. When it opens in cinemas on Friday in the UK - you'll be getting the uncut film!"
We sure could take a page from our friends across the pond.
Below is a list courtesy of ArieScope Pictures of the first round of cinemas where UK fans can catch the film on the big screen starting April 1st. More screens will be added so check your local listings!

Following the release of Victor Crowley's return in Adam Green's slasher sequel 'Hatchet II' on VOD last month it seemed inevitable that this would get the sequel green light. Well, we didn't think it would be so soon but it appears that Dark Sky Films have in fact confirmed that 'Hatchet III' is indeed good to go. It seems Green already had an idea in mind for a follow-up so it looks like Kane Hodder will be returning as the psychotic Crowley. 'Hatchet II' starred Tony Todd ('Final Destination'), Parry Shen, Tom Holland, R.A. Mihailoff, Aj Bowen, horror hottie Danielle Harris and even the gorgeous Rileah Vanderbilt (below). Check out what Adam Green had to say on the subject of the proposed sequel below....
