After Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos landed an Oscar nomination for “Dogtooth,” his twisted dystopian vision of a family trapped in deranged rituals, his agent took him around town. It was the usual routine: Promising young talent offered numerous pre-conceived projects, with no guarantee that he’d have any control over the final result. “I didn’t really know the landscape,” said Lanthimos in an interview. “I just realized it’s not what I’m interested in. I’d never be able to survive such a situation.”

That early decision paid off. After “Dogtooth,” Lanthimos churned out a series of movies that have continued to cement his status as one of the most original, visionary filmmakers working today. His movies present bleak, self-contained universes of despair, and they’re never predictable.

Hot off the critical and awards season success of Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea,” Amazon is continuing to ink major production deals with some of the art house world’s biggest stars, from newly-minted Oscar winner Barry Jenkins to the the delightfully original Leos Carax — and that’s just the start. Amazon’s relationship with creators also includes a number of television heavy-hitters, including Amy Sherman-Palladino and Matthew Weiner, but the keen eye they’ve turned on filmmakers is the one to watch.
Still, there is much work to be done. While Amazon has had major success working with filmmaker and showrunner Jill Soloway — and its latest batch of pilots includes a standout from “Gilmore Girls” alum Sherman-Palladino — the list of filmmakers who recently signed on to produce features with the studio is woefully lacking when it comes to female talents. If you can grab a Yorgos Lanthimos,...

Why the Greek director’s tragicomic sensibility is perfect for the subject matter.
Not to be outdone by Netflix’s upcoming string of auteur dramas, Amazon Studios just announced that director Yorgos Lanthimos will be reteaming with The Lobster star Colin Farrell for an upcoming original series. The topic? The Iran-Contra Affair. For those of you (like me) who are too young to remember, the so-called Iran-Contra Affair was a scandal that occurred during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, in which administration officials conspired to sell weapons to Iran (against whom there was an arms embargo) in order to funnel the profits to a right-wing Nicaraguan army known as the Contras (to whom Congress had forbidden funding). The initial plan was to use said profits to negotiate the release of several hostages held by Hezbollah, but then Colonel Oliver North got involved and devised a plan to use the money to also fund the Contras. Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell will re-team with director Yorgos Lanthimos for a third time on an as-yet untitled dramatic television series for Amazon. Having delivered the critically acclaimed 2015 comedy drama The Lobster, and while filming the upcoming drama film The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, Farrell and Lanthimos have confirmed that they will join forces once more for a re-telling of the Iran-Contra scandal – with Farrell starring as Oliver North.
The Iran-Contra scandal rocked the presidency of Ronald Reagan, as it transpired that senior administration officials had violated an arms embargo in order to interfere in the affairs of another country. Seven U.S hostages were being held by Hezbollah in Lebanon, and a deal was made for the secret sale of arms to Iran, to facilitate their release. Oliver North became a household name during the investigation into these events, as he was responsible for augmenting the plan...

Yorgos Lanthimos and Colin Farrell are teaming up for a third time. The director and star are attached to Amazon’s new television drama series about the Iran-Contra affair, Variety reports. Farrell will star as former U.S. marine Oliver North, who took part in the sale of weapons to Iran, with the profits being channeled to the Contras in Nicaragua. Lanthimos will direct the series, which isn’t titled yet and is being written by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson.

His collaborations with Terrence Malick, Michael Mann, and Martin McDonagh have given Colin Farrell some of his best performances, but it was with last year’s The Lobster that we saw a different side of the actor. After putting on a few extra pounds, he perfectly exuded Yorgos Lanthimos‘ dry humor in the dark comedy. They’ve already reteamed for the highly anticipated The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which will hopefully debut at Cannes, and now they’ve got another project in the works.
This time they’ll be heading to the small screen, as Variety reports Farrell will lead a limited series on Amazon series, portraying U.S. marine Oliver North and his hand in the Iran-Contra affair. As we look ahead to the arrival of new and exciting film projects this week, we also take a look back at some of the interesting and/or noteworthy projects in-the-works that were recently added to IMDbPro's growing database of in-development titles. Here are a few that grabbed our attention lately:
Swindle – Once upon a time we thought films like Jennifer's Body featuring Megan Fox and Colombiana starring Zoe Saldana's would be sure fire hits at the box office based on their stars' previous blockbuster success (not to mention their pin-up poster appeal). But, we were wrong. Now, the two actresses are joining forces to beat the box office odds by co-starring in this action-heist flick from writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson. Michael De Luca produces.
Action No. 1 – Reno 911! alumni-turned-Night of the Museum scribes Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon found real-life inspiration for their next comedy from actor Nic Cage. The theft of the Oscar-winner's prized comic book collection, including a copy of Superman's first appearance, by a crew of bumbling nerds is the basis for this film from Lionsgate. No word on who will portray Cage.
Untitled Barbara Jordan Biopic – The Help's Viola Davis is on a roll. Following up her recent Oscar nom with performances in the upcoming Ender's Game and Warner Bros.' Beautiful Creatures, the actress has formed her own company, JuVee Productions, along with her husband, Julius Tennon, to produce this feature film based on the life story of civil rights leader, Barbara Jordan, who became the first African American woman ever elected to the Texas senate.
The 5th Wave – Tobey Maguire's Material Pictures and Graham King's GK Films will team up to produce this sci-fi tale from writer Rick Yancey. The film centers on a girl looking for her lost brother after an alien invasion.
Zombie Broadway – Formerly one-half of the '80s New Wave act Eurythmics, musician Dave Stewart is now branching out into movies with this genre-crossing musical directed by Jonas Åkerlund. The pic follows a group of Broadway entertainers trying to stop a zombie invasion in New York City. Stewart's producing via his company, Weapons of Mass Entertainment.

Two of Hollywood’s most desired ladies Megan Fox and Zoe Saldana recently approached veteran producer Michael De Luca (Moneyball) with the idea of teaming in a movie together. Thankfully he agreed (and seriously, how could he turn down Fox & Saldana’s double team proposal)…
Deadline reports that Fox & Saldana will co-lead the action/heist film “Swindle”, based on a spec script by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson at Paramount.
Saldana, who has become the genuine action heroine in cinema with Columbiana, The Losers and who apparently kicks more ass in the Star Trek sequel than she did last time around, has already proved she can open this kind of movie on her own but for Fox this is new territory. She is usually the eye candy damsel-in-distress so she’s due some time wielding a gun.
No story details yet and it’s unclear when this one is planned to shoot.

Zoe Saldana and Megan Fox have never been paired up to star in a movie, but now that is all about to change. Paramount has just acquired the rights to a heist thriller called Swindle. The movie scripted by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson will star Megan Fox and Zoe Saldana. Details about the film’s plot are currently being withheld.
Megan Fox is currently starring in Friends With Kids, and has the Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle comedy The Dictator coming up next. She also has the Judd Apatow-directed ensemble comedy This Is Forty with Paul Rudd, Chris O’Dowd, and Leslie Mann. She has bounced back nicely after leaving the Transformers franchise.
Saldana is currently shooting the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek sequel and will next star in the Guillaume Canet-directed Blood Ties, opposite Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, and Marion Cotillard. She starred with Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons in The Words,...

Apparently a movie starring Zoe Saldana and Megan Fox is a hot item around Hollywood. Go figure. Neither one has really shown any real ability to open a movie by their little lonesome, though I suppose Saldana can brag a bit about “Colombiana”. That’s apparently the notion Paramount is going with, as the studio has snapped up an “action-heist” spec script from writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson for Saldana and Fox to star in and produce. Apparently the ladies have been hot to work with one another for a while. No idea what the movie is about, but it’s called “Swindle”, so I’m guessing some type of buddy cop/heist film where the two women get to show off their hotness while swindling stupid men and such. Probably action-comedy would be my guess. This reminds me of “Bandidas”, which paired up Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek,...

An action movie starring Megan Fox and Zoe Saldana? That might sell some tickets.
The action beauties are set to break hearts and bones as they've signed on for the lead roles in the new heist thriller, "Swindle," according to Deadline.
Both ladies are veterans of the blockbuster action genre, having starred in "Transformers" and "Avatar," respectively, but this time they're leaving the boys behind and taking center stage. Fox and Saldana (sounds like a cop show, doesn't it?) had apparently been looking for a project to work on together and "Swindle" has obliged.
Details on the plot are being kept under wraps, but we have a feeling it will involve the two stunning stars shooting guns, crashing cars and seducing idiot men in order to gain access to secret rooms. Hopefully, anyway.

Talk about a hot steal! (Yeah, yeah, we know, we know...)
Megan Fox and Zoe Saldana are signing up to kick some ass in the action/heist flick "Swindle." Uh, and that's about all we know. Sony picked up the spec script from Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, that will be produced by Michael De Luca ("Moneyball") and apparently this all came about because Fox and Saldana wanted to do a movie together. And why not?
Fox already knows what it's like to be window dressing in action movies, so why not give her a chance to actually do something instead? As for Saldana, with "Star Trek," "Columbiana" and "The Losers" (she was the best thing in it), she's already more than proven she can deliver thrills, and has acting chops to boot.
No word yet on when this will shoot, and it will need a director first before that can happen.

She might have fallen out with Michael Bay and been unceremoniously replaced on the last Transformers film, but it would appear that Megan Fox still has plenty of cheerleaders at Paramount. And Zoe Saldana is on even better terms with the studio, since she's one of their Star Trek crew. Now the company has nabbed heist spec script Swindle to turn into a star vehicle for the pair.
Actually, the original idea to team up came from Saldana and Fox, who have been looking for something to appear in together. Spotting the possibilities (they've both got plenty of box office appeal and aren't exactly difficult on the eyes), Paramount acted quickly to snatch Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson's script from the bargaining table before Universal could get its hands on it.
What we don't yet know is exactly what it's about, beyond the heist concept. The only solid detail...

And the prurient internet fan fiction begins… now.
What, you’re saying this isn’t bound to spark some lewd comments? Deadline reports that Zoe Saldana and Megan Fox have signed with Paramount to lead Swindle, a heist film they’ll also produce with Michael De Luca (Moneyball). Any further particulars the film — written on spec by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson — are being kept under lock and key, unless the two actresses wanting to work together counts as relevant information. I would say it does not.
A complete and total dearth of anything that could be deemed crucial notwithstanding — when should that ever stop someone? — I suppose that, when all is said and done, a couple of fun things may lie in this pairing. There’s an evident mismatch in screen talent between Saldana and (the actually-not-that-terrible) Fox, sure, but a project starring these two could always sound so much worse.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has acquired the action-heist spec script Swindle, which will be developed by Moneyball producer Michael De Luca as a star vehicle for Megan Fox and Zoe Saldana. The actresses will produce with De Luca. Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson wrote the script. The storyline is being kept under wraps but the spec sold after both Universal and Paramount chased it. Fox is currently starring in Friends With Kids, and next stars opposite Sacha Baron Cohen in the Paramount comedy The Dictator and the Judd Apatow-directed ensemble comedy This Is Forty with Paul Rudd, Chris O’Dowd, and Leslie Mann. She has bounced back nicely after leaving the Transformers franchise. Saldana is currently shooting the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek sequel and will next star in the Guillaume Canet-directed Blood Ties,...
