Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.
The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.
Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.
We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.

Pennsylvania police tell People they are hoping forensic testing will help determine whether or not a woman who vanished in 1989 was put through a wood chipper and then encased in a wall in the basement of a home where her ex-boyfriend’s sister once lived.
Sunbury, Pennsylvania, Police Chief Tim Miller says the department has already confirmed the presence of wood chips in a concrete wall at the residence in Milton, Pennsylvania. But investigators are waiting to find out if the remains of 30-year-old Barbara Elizabeth Miller are also entombed there.

I really like Better Things, FX's new comedy starring and produced by Pamela Adlon, who was Louis C.K.'s frequent on- and off-screen collaborator on Louie. (Here's my review from yesterday.) The show is deeply autobiographical, with Adlon playing a thinly-disguised version of herself: a single mom to three daughters, and a former child actress still plugging away in show business (finding more success in voiceover work than on camera) decades later. At press tour, I sat down with Adlon to talk about how (when she was still going by Pamela Segall) she got started in the business, her early '80s androgynous period — highlighted by Willy/Milly, where she played an adolescent girl who wished to be a boy, and woke up the next morning with a penis — the transition into voice work on shows like King of the Hill, the ways that her new art imitates her old...

A 14-year-old Wisconsin girl will be tried as an adult for the alleged attempted murder of her older brother's girlfriend, the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reports. Kali J. Bookey of New Richmond was charged Thursday with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and is in juvenile custody after she allegedly attacked the 15-year-old victim and slit her throat with shards of ceramic bowls on Wednesday, according to the Leader-Telegram. A criminal complaint obtained by the newspaper alleges that Bookey called police Wednesday morning to report an attempted abduction. When police arrived at her location, she sent them to a New Richmond home to follow her alleged attackers.

As the first half of Mad Men’s seventh season was playing out last spring, Barbara Miller was scurrying to meet with the department heads and creative team of the show at L.A. Center Studios, in preparation for her own production. In what she calls a “deeply collaborative effort,” the Museum of the Moving Image’s curator of the collection and exhibitions worked directly with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and his team to select the props, costumes, and handwritten notes that would make up the exhibit, “Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men.”Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the Mad Men writers’ room, filled with Weiner’s early handwritten notes and script pages dating back to 1992, which would eventually inform the show when it premiered 15 years later. Thirty-three costumes — including Don Draper’s iconic suit, Megan Draper’s “Zou Bisou Bisou” dress, and Pete Campbell’s preppy California look — are on display,...

The father of two Amish girls who were allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted has said he feels “sorry” for the suspects.
Father: Suspects In Daughters' Abduction Are "Sad"
Following the safe return of their two daughters, Delila Miller, 7, and Fannie Miller, 12, Mose Miller, 44, and his wife, Barbara Miller, 43, spoke to the press on Sunday at their upstate New York farm.
“It’s sad. They must have ruined their whole life,” Mr. Miller told the press.
Forgiveness is a highly regarded trait of the Amish community, and reports suggest that it is this exercise of forgiveness that prompted these comments, as the Millers have been working with authorities. Meanwhile, Mrs. Miller said she was happy to have two of their 14 children back at home. “We feel relieved we have them. It’s still not like it was,” she said.

It’s a great week for Entourage fans everywhere. From 2004 to 2011, the brilliant TV show was a perfect example of the increasingly exceptional programming on television, particularly from HBO.
When the final season concluded last year, it gave us all hope that more would be coming, and creator Doug Ellin has spoken over the last two years about his intentions to make a movie following on from where things left off.
Thankfully, it looks like we won’t have quite as long a wait as we’ve had for Arrested Development (which we can’t wait to see return with Season 4 this spring on Netflix). Deadline are reporting that Warner Bros. have officially given the green light to the movie!
And I couldn’t be happier.
Ellin will be directing the film from his own script. And we imagine that Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, who served as executive producers on the show,...

When 9-year-old Calysta Cordova went missing last week in Colorado, it was her family's worst nightmare. But little did they know that their daughter was listening when they taught her what to do in an emergency. Calysta dialed 911 from a convenience store in Colorado Springs last Friday after a man allegedly kidnapped her, police say. Police responded and arrested Jose Humberto Garcia, 29, for investigation of abducting the girl. Garcia appeared in court Monday and was being held on $250,000 bond. "Her mother always taught her to call 911 and to fight, fight, fight," police spokesperson Barbara Miller tells People. "She saw this...

This week, Beverly D'Angelo swung by Cougar Town to guest star as Laurie's mother, Sheila. While she did a fine job, her character wasn't given much material to work with besides ripping on Jules and Laurie's lesbian relationship and bringing out the crazy.
Being huge fans of the actress from her iconic role in the Vacation series and more recently as Barbara Miller on Entourage, we were hoping for a little more. In the end, the main storyline of "What Are You Doin' In My Life?" was mostly heart-warming and not loaded with the best laughs.
The main laughs last night were mostly brought by Bobby, Ellie, Grayson and Andy in their ridiculous plotline of Bobby being beat up by a female hobo. Only on Cougar Town and only with Bobby.
We're not even going to comment on Travis and Barb's storyline, which was as much of a throwaway in...
