The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's '60s sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is laid out clearly in its theme song. Five passengers set sail on the S.S. Minnow with its captain and first mate, hoping to enjoy a three-hour tour of Hawaii. The ship hit rough weather, however, was dragged many miles off course, and washed up on the shores of an uncharted tropical island. The seven characters had to use their wits to survive, along with the contents of the inexplicably massive suitcases they all brought along. "Gilligan's Island" took place in a broad, slapstick universe, so any concerns of actual survival weren't addressed in any kind of meaningful way; Gilligan (Bob Denver) seemed to gain sustenance from energy-producing pratfalls.

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

Exactly 30 years to the day since Whoopi Goldberg officially became an Oscar winner, the entertainer is reliving the moment over Zoom.
Watching a clip from the 1991 Academy Awards telecast from her home in New Jersey, Goldberg breaks into a big smile as Denzel Washington opens the envelope and declares her the best supporting actress for her performance as psychic Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost.”
Listening intently, Goldberg takes in her earnest acceptance speech — which, though she’s been asked to recall the experience over the years, she hasn’t seen in a while — and shares her takeaways.
“I looked really good,” she says. “My hair was cool. Dress was cute.”
Goldberg chose a black sequined column gown from veteran costume designer Nolan Miller (with whom she’d worked on 1991’s “Soapdish” and who designed clothes for her mentor Elizabeth Taylor): “I couldn’t look glamorous like other people look glamorous.

After decades of A-list fame and high-fashion red carpet moments, one would think designers would jump at the chance to dress Jane Seymour.
But while reflecting on all things fashion during a recent interview with The Guardian, the 68-year-old actress revealed that’s actually not the case: “…nowadays not every designer will dress someone my age,” the Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman star told the outlet.
Luckily, Seymour doesn’t mind repeating outfits.
“I don’t care whether re-wearing clothes is acceptable or not — if I’m feeling the dress and the occasion, and if it fits, then I’ll wear it again,...

The relationship between costume designers and actors is an intimate one, veteran designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack, currently working on the CW’s “Dynasty,” knows. While the designer has a clear vision for a character’s look, he or she must also take into consideration actors’ needs so they are comfortable. For “Dynasty,” Markworth-Pollack often faces the challenge of making couture statement pieces extremely functional in order to withstand catfights.
What was your inspiration for getting into the world of costume design?
I was studying film at Ucsb and we watched [Robert Altman’s] “Nashville” — I think it was a ’70s cinema class — and I don’t know why but it was like the first time I was really paying attention to everyone’s wardrobe. And it was something that we addressed about the film, and I just remember thinking, “Oh wait, somebody dressed every single character.” And it was such a...

The original Dynasty was known for many things, including the big hair, the fashion and those knock-down, drag-out fights, usually between the female stars. The CW's Dynasty will have all that—just updated for the times. Sorry, you'll be hard-pressed to see any Nolan Miller gowns when the Dynasty reboot debuts on Wednesday, Oct. 11, but you will see women butting heads. "I did notice in the original catfights, if you go back and watch them, all of a sudden there will be a massive stunt man in a wig and you're just supposed to be like, 'Yeah, that's fine, sure,'" Elizabeth Gillies, Fallon Carrington in the new series, told E! Tuxedo-clad bear Alec Baldwin continues to be poked by the abusive handlers of the world, though his latest attack unfortunately goes beyond tussles with stewardesses or his own daughter that can be ameliorated with SNL skits and YouTube mash-ups. Baldwin is currently under investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force for an incident involving a New York Post photographer, G.N. He’s never been one for controlling his mouth, and Alec Baldwin may be guilty of committing a hate crime after a verbal assault on New York Post photographer/retired NYPD detective G. N. Miller.
According to a report, the “30 Rock” actor encountered the man outside his East Village apartment building on Sunday (February 17) at which time he called him a “coon,” “crackhead,” and “drug dealer.”
Baldwin also allegedly told Post reporter Tara Palmeri, “I want you to choke to deal. Suck my d*ck,” and Ms. Palmeri supposedly caught the whole exchange on her audio recorder.
However, Alec’s pregnant wife Hilaria insists it’s all a contrived mess. “Shame on anyone who says my husband is racist. If you could only see/hear the dangerous things paparazzi will do & the lies to get a ‘story.’ ”

"30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin is being accused of using a racial slur against a photographer, in New York City Sunday, which he denies. The New York Post reports Baldwin accosted one of their reporters when she asked about the pending lawsuit against his wife, Hilaria Thomas.
According to the Post, Baldwin grabbed the reporter by her arm and said, "I want you to choke to death." He then allegedly addressed a photographer, G.N. Miller, using a racial slur, before calling him a drug dealer. Miller identified himself as a retired NYPD cop at a certain point, presenting an ID, which Baldwin supposedly dismissed as fake.
The police were called, with Baldwin and Miller filing harassment complaints against each other. The reporter evidently taped the confrontation, however TMZ reports that there is no evidence of a racial slur being used on it.

Last week saw the death of Nolan Miller, an Emmy-winning costume designer whose work spanned over 40 years yet will always be most closely associated with the 1980s and Dynasty, where his splashy, sequined dresses and broad shoulder pads defined an entire decade's sense of glamour. Miller was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago; he died at the age of 79. Rare photographs of a teenage Marilyn Monroe when she was just plain old Norma Jean Dougherty are to be auctioned off during a memorabilia sale next month.
The model shots, taken by Joseph Jasgur, are among the items that will be going under the hammer at the Julien's Auctions event, which runs from 1 to 4 December.
The lots also include a letter the aspiring star wrote to her foster mother, Grace Goddard, to describe her first meeting with U.S. Army photographer David Conover, who helped launch the 19-year-old icon-to-be's modeling career. The eight-page letter gives insight on Norma Jeane's marriage to Jimmie Dougherty and her hopes of a better career.
The letter is expected to fetch up to $50,000 (£31,250).
A spokesman for Julien's tells WENN, "With encouragement from Conover, Monroe took steps to join the Blue Book Modeling Agency where she met photographer Joseph Jasgur who took numerous photographs of the 19-year-old. These photographs and copyrights become available for the very first time and the complete archive and early image copyrights will be sold exclusively at this auction event. The settings for the photographs range from high atop buildings in Los Angeles to Zuma Beach."
Other highlights at the auction include the Nolan Miller signature black and red gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in Poker Alice, a collection of costumes and props from the 2000 blockbuster film The Grinch, Sean Connery's 007 Walther-ppk .38 calibre pistol from Never Say Never Again and costumes from the cult film The Big Lebowski.

Christina Applegate of Kelly Bundy and Samantha Who fame joined the judging panel last night, and she actually had a bit more dance cred than most guest judges this season, having been nominated for a Tony for the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. She wound up being a pretty competent judge, although at this point, with only six great dancers left, there's not a lot to actually criticize.
But me, I'm sure I can find something!
Like maybe Lil' C. Oh Lil' C. Can you just not talk and just sit there and be pretty?. Because you sure are pretty. (Or "buck" as you would say). But those inane extended rhymes you do with the highfalutin' adjectives make me want to tear my hair (and your cornrows) out. How I wonder do you keep getting invited back to the judging panel?
Another thing worth complaining about: choreographers that use a lot of gimmicky props.

Welcome back A-List fans and horrified onlookers! It's the finale, and what better way to kick things off than Rodiney shirtless in a kitchen in Maine ringing a cowbell.
It's all downhill from there.
The other A-Listers assemble for their morning coffee and Derek comes traipsing in wearing a padded-shouldered, belted nightgown that Linda Evans might have rocked way back on Dynasty. Who knew Nolan Miller was designing menswear these days?
But then T.J. shows up, also in a traipsy little number, and I realize that their outfits are supposed to be a joke. It's sort of hard to tell with these guys, given their usual fashion choices.
After breakfast the boys go jet skiing out on the lake, but eventually Reichen and Rodiney commandeer the Sea-Doos for a grocery run. That leaves Derek, T.J., Austin and Ryan stranded ashore and talking smack about Rodiney.
So what else is new.
