Dan Savage is not know to hold anything back, even when it comes to members of his own family.
The syndicated (and outrageous) sex columnist and gay-rights advocate behind the It Gets Better Project is releasing a new book this week called American Savage: Insights, Slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics.
In an interview with Canadian site Xtra on Monday, Savage detailed some of the book's main topics, including a touching anecdote about his teenage son's "coming out."
“My son had to come out to us as straight, and he was worried what we might think," Savage told Xtra. "Even with all the support we gave him to be whatever he wants to be, he felt allegiance to us and allegiance to his family, and thought we would be disappointed that he wouldn’t be gay like us. Matt Smith has confirmed that he will be starring in Doctor Who for the eighth season, to air in 2014. With the big 50th anniversary special, many had speculated we'd be in for another regeneration.
Republican Arizona Senator Jeff Flake doesn't support marriage equality, but as far as a Gop presidential candidate supporting it, “I think that’s inevitable. There will be one, and I think he’ll receive Republican support, or she will. So, I think that, yes, the answer is ‘yes.’”

MTV's revisiting the It Gets Better movement with a second special.
News
If you heard a collective sigh of relief from Community fans, that's because the comedy's debut on Fridays has been delayed. Whitney won't make its debut on October 19, either. The delay has prompted speculation that both series may get a more prominent time slot, once NBC takes a little more time to see how its new series do. Then again, NBC says the issue is that their promotion department is too busy with the new shows, so Community and Whitney could still end up airing on Fridays, just at a later date.
Fox has ordered more episodes of The Mindy Project and Ben & Kate. Mindy's got a nine-episode order, giving it a full season while Ben & Kate will make an additional six. I'm still waiting to see how Mindy develops, but I couldn't make it through the Ben & Kate pilot.

I have long admired Dan Savage's advice, especially to struggling queers. Like Kate Bornstein's advice to Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws, Savage's advice inspires me to keep in mind the invisible struggles of non-conformers. I have also found daily inspiration in the viral responses to Savage's (and Terry Miller's) "It Gets Better" campaign. It is revolutionary and empowering to watch videos on demand in which, as Chris Rovzar wrote in 2010 in New York Magazine, "grown-ups ... tell gay kids that things will be easier in the future, when they are out of school, or when they are simply older and more comfortable with who they are."
While the "It Gets Better" campaign initially intended to represent happy and adjusted older queers to struggling younger queers, the campaign evolved to encourage anyone to tell a struggling person that the future will be easier and more fun than the present.

Dan Savage has offered hundreds of thousands of words of advice since he began his "Savage Love" column two decades ago. But the most important are these three: It gets better. Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, recorded an online video with that simple message in September 2010 in response to suicides by bullied gay teens. Whoever you are, they promised scared, isolated kids, your life will be better once you finish high school. Though sex and relationship advice columnist Dan Savage is frequently taken to task by finger-wagging conservatives for his often-unorthodox views on coupledom, according to a terrific seven-page piece entitled "Married, With Infidelities" published in this weekend's New York Times Magazine, the openly-gay author, media personality, and creator of the life-saving "It Gets Better" Project isn't nearly as subversive as his reputation suggests.
"It Gets Better is, in the end, a paean to stable families: it is a promise to gay youth that if they can just survive the bullying, they can have spouses and children when they grow up", writes the piece's author, Mark Oppenheimer. "With Savage, the goal is always the possibility of stable, adult families, for gays and straights alike. Gay pride week here in New York City has been eventful to say the least (see previous post) and the parade today was fun. But I thought what you'd most be interested in, given The Film Experience's leanings (actressexual), was a shared moment with Ally Sheedy!

The internet, for all its stupidity sometimes, is still magic. The ability to connect with people that one might not otherwise meet has given rise to all sorts of opportunities -- bloggers become published authors, musicians grow their fanbases, and people from different locales can relate to each another and perhaps become friends. Still, occurrences such as those are mere serendipity compared to the real magic of the It Gets Better project. Founded by Stranger columnist Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller, It Gets Better started with one video that reached out to bullied gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, particularly young people, and told them exactly that--Life might be hard for you now, but hang in there, and the whole world awaits.

One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.
That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.

Hip-hop mogul Jay-z has won the latest round in an ongoing legal battle over the name of a restaurant in England. The rapper filed suit against celebrity chef Terry Miller five years ago over the name of his Rockafella restaurant in Newcastle, claiming the title would lead to confusion with his Roc-a-Fella Records music empire.
A judge ruled in Miller's favor and last year, he was granted the U.K. trademark for the restaurant and food-branding name Rockafella, while Jay-z was ordered to pay the cook's legal costs. But the "99 Problems" hitmaker appealed the decision and was handed victory during a hearing in London on Monday, February 21.
Professor Ruth Annand overturned the original judgment, claiming the previous case manager was wrong to say the two business names would not clash because Jay-z's entertainment ventures were not entirely separate from the catering trade.

Hip-hop superstar Jay-z has lost a longrunning legal battle with the boss of a British restaurant - four years after he sued the eaterie in a trademark dispute. The rapper filed suit against celebrity chef Terry Miller in 2006 over the name of his Rockafella restaurant in Newcastle, England, claiming the title would lead to confusion with his Roc-a-Fella Records music empire.
Miller, who launched the business after winning U.K. cooking reality show "Hell's Kitchen" in 2005, fought back and after years of legal wrangling a ruling in England has gone in his favor. The reality TV star has been granted the U.K. trademark for the restaurant and food-branding name Rockafella, and Jay-z has been ordered to pay Miller's legal costs.
Miller admits he is delighted with the result. He says, "I'm happy with the legal win because it's a moral win as much as anything."
