Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey are opening up about that scene in Fellow Travelers when Jonathan sucks on Matt‘s toes.
During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the guys were asked if the script actually called for Jonathan to “suck toe.”
“It was very, very precisely written down — it was as precise as it needed to be,” Jonathan said, before explaining why he had no issue with doing that scene.
Keep reading to find out more…
He continued, “I saw that as an incredible way to dissect power. I got it when I read it, and I wasn’t intimidated by it. I was just like, ‘If in the first episode that’s what we are doing, it’s going to be worth five months moving to Toronto, and it’s going to be a series that I would want to watch.’ Because not only is it incredibly complicated,...

We all know that Sundance is a welcoming launchpad for first-time filmmakers — and this was indeed the case for Daniel Minahan who shored up all the way in 2001 with Series 7: The Contenders. a gnarly comedy noir thriller that reminds us of The Running Man. Almost a quarter of a century later and tons of television series work later, the filmmaker might bring On Swift Horses — a period piece item featuring strained relationships, horses, gambling and the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi and Will Poulter. Ron Nyswaner, the executive producer and writer of the Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers, says that he feared there were three strikes against getting it made: “It’s period, it’s political and it’s gay.”
At a recent Washington, D.C. screening, though, he summed up some of the initial reaction to the completed project: “They love that it is period, that it is political and that it is gay.”
The eight-part Fellow Travelers, based on the book by Thomas Mallon, centers on the romance between the extroverted State Department official and cynical war hero “Hawk” Fuller, played by Matt Bomer, and idealistic aspiring Senate aide Tim Laughlin, played by Jonathan Bailey, a relationship that started during the McCarthy era of the 1950s and extends to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

In the most lacerating episode of Max’s dearly departed comedy The Other Two, the characters attend the premiere of a Broadway show titled 8 Gay Men with AIDS: A Poem in Many Hours. Wondering about future roles for his Method-actor boyfriend, who stars in the play, Drew Tarver’s Cary wonders, “Is there anything coming up that is prestigious and gay, but doesn’t have, like, nonstop trauma in it?”
The fact is, we’re not at a point, as a society, where we can stop telling stories of trauma. There remains a cultural need for narratives that foreground the AIDS epidemic, that acknowledge the horrors of the Holocaust and slavery. That said, if you’re going to do a trauma-fueled, decades-spanning odyssey of gay life from McCarthy to Reagan, weaving in the Red Scare and the early days of AIDS, comparisons to Angels in America are going to be inevitable.

There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon, the series is described as an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer will play handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. After being nominated four times since 1997, Ewan McGregor is now an Emmy Award winner, converting his latest mention into a gold statue for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in Halston. The Netflix limited series about the famed American fashion designer has given the Scottish actor some of the best notices of his career.
Accepting his prize tonight following fellow Brit Kate Winslet’s exuberant acceptance speech for her Mare Of Easttown win, McGregor quipped, “It’s quite difficult going after you, Kate.”
Thanks went to Ryan Murphy for “championing Halston and bringing it to Netflix.” McGregor also noted, “like so many people we shot through the pandemic in New York City” and thanked the crew for their “professionalism and passion; you kept us all safe.” Further, to executive producer Christine Vachon of Killer Films, and in a reference to 1998’s Velvet Goldmine, McGregor added,...

The limited series “Halston” premiered on May 14 of this year, but the period drama about the fashion icon of the same name was more than two decades in the making. Series director Daniel Minahan first read a biography of the famed designer in 1996 and felt that it needed a film treatment. After multiple failed attempts to bring the project to fruition, he teamed with Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon and superstar producer Ryan Murphy and the series found a home on Netflix.
“Halston” stars Ewan McGregor in the title role. The Iowa- born Halston first came to prominence designing high-end hats for women. After one of his hats is worn by Jackie Kennedy, Halston becomes a giant in the fashion industry, creating everything from designer gowns, to luggage and even perfume. The series is set against the backdrop of the New York party scene of the 1970s, replete with cocaine-fueled...

The practice of creating origin stories for well-known characters that are not the leading role in a narrative is reaching a fever pitch these days, but “Ratched” — Netflix’s 2020 series starring Sarah Paulson (above) as the younger, more stylish version of “One Flew the Cuckoo’s Nest” harridan nurse – might have kickstarted the craze given how much you could wring from such a scrupulous character.
“My biggest challenge was we had so much rich material”, said series editor Shelly Westerman, who was responsible for five episodes of the first season (a second one is in the works), “jaw- dropping dailies that you would call out your co-workers screaming ‘you’ve gotta see this’ — the acting, hair, makeup, costumes, cinematography, everything was just amazing. The hardest part was cutting it, especially since we had a nearly 90-minute pilot, I just loved it.”

In Halston, executive producers Dan Minahan and Ryan Murphy saw an unlikely parallel between the mononymous fashion legend who lost control of his own name and the culture of 2021 — one that often seems equally interested in turning people into brands and in tearing them down over the right misstep.
“He seemed to be the template of all of that stuff,” says Murphy. “It just felt modern, like a great big cautionary tale about the power of your name — and of selling your name.”
Speaking with THR earlier in June — Murphy, on a break from directing Impeachment: American Crime Story, and Minahan,...

“I love doing things that are about fashion,” Ryan Murphy tells us on the latest episode of Crew Call.
“A lot of people think fashion is frivolous and treat it as such. I think it’s true art, it’s how we live and it’s ‘the time’. I take it quite seriously,” adds the EP and writer who made Halston a priority as a limited series in his Netflix production deal.
Producer Christine Vachon and filmmaker Daniel Minahan tried to get the story about the rise and fall of Roy Halston Frowick made as early as 1996. The Des Moines, Iowa native went from being the milliner who made Jackie Kennedy’s famed pillbox hat to a roaring fashion icon known for shimmery, easy to wear one pieces and dresses. Halston was arguably the first among his peers to make couture available to the masses, and his selling-out remains a cautionary tale to the industry.

“They celebrate, to some degree, different kinds of LGBTQ storytelling,” argues producer Christine Vachon about two of her latests projects: the Netflix limited series “Halston” and the FX docuseries “Pride.” Vachon is the co-founder of Killer Films, the independent film company behind the Oscar-winning films “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Still Alice,” as well as groundbreaking LGBTQ films like “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Velvet Goldmine.” Check out our exclusive video interview above.
It took over two decades for Vachon and series director Daniel Minahan to bring “Halston” to television. Both Vachon and Minihan were at the beginning or their careers when they optioned the book on which the series is based, but Vachon says that only recently did the relevance of the legendary designer’s story become apparent. “I think it almost took all those years for us to figure out what the best part of the story was,...
