The 24th annual Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival is the largest, most jam-packed edition of Chicago’s long-running avant-garde and experimental media fest ever! Held at the Gene Siskel Film Center on June 21 and at Columbia College on June 22-23, this year’s event features two days and three nights of fantastic experimental work, including both short films and feature-length productions.
Two feature-length films will get two screenings each. First, there’s collage animator Lewis Klahr‘s latest epic work The Pettifogger, a film noir about the year in the life of a ’60s era gambler; and Tributes – Pulse, a collaboration between filmmaker Bill Morrison and Danish composer Simon Christensen. Both films will screen on the 22nd and the 23rd.

Student-run at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Underground Film Festival will once again screen a selection of phenomenal experimental and avant-garde short films from all over the world. The 2012 edition will run May 4-5 at various locations around Milwaukee, including the Uwm Union Theatre, Walker’s Point Center for the Arts and the the Peck School of the Arts Kenilworth Studios.

The 23rd annual Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival presents four nights of international avant-garde and experimental media from all over the world. The fest runs June 23-26 with the Opening Night festivities taking place at the Gene Siskel Film Center and the rest of the screenings held at the venerable Chicago Filmmakers, which has been behind the event for the past 11 years.
The Opening Night presentation begins with the new short film from the Brothers Quay, Maska, which was produced in Poland and based on a short story by Polish author Stanislaw Lem (Solaris). The 2011 Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, which was held back on May 6-8, gave out awards to four deserving filmmakers and also gave Honorable Mentions to six filmmakers.
The three-day experimental and avant-garde short film festival is a student-run event organized by students of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Screenings took place both on campus and at the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts.
Jurors for this year’s edition were University of Florida film professor Roger Beebe; experimental filmmaker Lori Felker; and local curator Nicholas Frank.
Congratulations to the Uwm students who put on another amazing show this year. (The full lineup is here.) And special congrats to the festival winners, all of whom received $100. Here is the full list of winners:

"Mildred Pierce's" entourage is complete.
Mare Winningham has joined the cast of HBO's miniseries "Mildred Pierce," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The five-hour miniseries stars Kate Winslet in the titular role, as a Depression Era wife who splits with her unemployed husband (Brian F. O'Byrne and has to earn a living as a waitress to keep food on the table for her ungrateful daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood). Winningham will portray Ida Corwin, Mildred's friend.
Guy Pearce, James Le Gros and Melissa Leo have also been named as part of the cast.
Based on the 1941 James M. Cain novel, "Mildred Pierce" was adapted for the big screen in 1945 and starred Joan Crawford, who won an Oscar for the role.

Following the pattern now employed by studios pushing ensemble films to geeks, Paramount Pictures has released the first four one-sheets for next August’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
