Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley sparkle in this tremendous telling of the story of Alan Turing, the cryptology and computer-science pioneer whose work broke Germany’s Enigma code during World War II but who later was hounded into suicide by the English government because he was gay.
As I say in my video review, this is easily one of the year’s best films, and I’m particularly impressed by the work of Cumberbatch and Knightley. The film also stars Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear and Matthew Goode.
Morten Tyldum directs, in his first English-language film, from a script by Graham Moore, based on Alan Hodges’ biography of Turing. Nora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky and Teddy Schwarzman are producers. The Weinstein Company is handling U.S. distribution.
After a long string of almost weekly film festival screenings – including Toronto, Telluride and London – the film finally debuts in theaters Friday.

After appearing on Good Morning America, Live! With Kelly and Michael and Charlie Rose, Benedict Cumberbatch entered the packed Terrace Room at The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City to a slew of flashing bulbs and familiar faces — his Imitation Game cast. "Can I have a glass of wine, or will I immediately face-plant into the table?" he asked screenwriter Graham Moore and author Walter Isaacson (The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution) at the intimate luncheon with reporters and Academy voters. Despite his packed press schedule on the rainy Monday

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in The Imitation Game, a drama about British genius Alan Turing. Here's Ryan's review...
Alan Turing was among the most important British thinkers of the 20th century, yet the story of his life only fully emerged decades after his death. Turing's work during World War II, where he led a team responsible for cracking Germany's coded communications, played a huge part in the Allied victory, and his pioneering achievements in computer science are still being felt today.
Beginning in 1941, The Imitation Game introduces the 27-year-old Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose mathematical genius far outstrips his interpersonal skills. Stationed at Bletchley Park in the south of England, Turing leads a team of linguists, problem solvers and mathematicians whose job is to crack the unfeasibly complex communications code used by the Nazis. As conventional attempts to break the code prove fruitless, Turing proposes a radical new approach: construct a code-breaking...

Telluride — While press and patrons were hustling into gondolas and over to the Chuck Jones Cinema for the World Premiere of Jean-Marc Vallée's "Wild," the 41st annual Telluride Film Festival was kicking off with a bang at an over-stuffed Werner Herzog Theater for the lead program of this year's schedule: a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." The ticket was so hot that well over a hundred pass holders were turned away at the door. In introducing a new Dcp of the original theatrical cut of the film (supervised for Coppola himself), Telluride co-founder Tom Luddy said it was noteworthy the event was unfolding at the Herzog, as "Apocalypse Now" holds a fair share of homages to Herzog's "Aguirre the Wrath of God," which screened at the fest last year to dedicate the new venue. A boat in a tree, a creeping vessel barraged by arrows, the general descent into madness,...

Hot script Imitation Game has been tumbling away in the development saucepan for a while now. And though at least one other director has come and gone, it appears that Headhunters director Morten Tyldum might finally be the man to get it made.Graham Moore’s script, which hit the Black List in 2011, is a drama based on the life of Alan Turing, who worked on cracking the German Enigma code during World War II.Despite his historic contribution to the war effort, he was criminally prosecuted in the early 1950s for his homosexuality and chose chemical castration over prison. But the witchhunt against him proved so stressful that he ended up committing suicide.Warners bought the script back in October 2011, with Leonardo DiCaprio hopping aboard to produce and, the studio hoped, star. But that never quite came together, despite The Disappearance Of Alice Creed director J. Blakeson negotiating to...

Leonardo DiCaprio has decided to quit "The Imitation Game." The actor was circling the historical drama, but has decided to pass. As a result, Warner Bros. has decided to kill the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producer Graham Moore was developing the film, based on the troubled life of WWII codebreaker and computer pioneer Alan Turing. J Blakeson ("The Disappearance of Alice Creed") was set to direct. DiCaprio will next be seen opposite Jamie Foxx in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," and in next year's delayed "The Great Gatsby," directed by Baz Luhrmann. Warner Bros. is letting go of its splashy World War II title The Imitation Game. The studio bought Graham Moore’s spec for seven figures last fall with the hopes of attaching Leonardo DiCaprio. Warners also brought J Blakeson onboard to direct in March. But DiCaprio is no longer eyeing the lead in Imitation Game, which centers on British cryptographer Alan Turing, who broke several German codes that helped the Allies win the war. Later in life, Turing was prosecuted for being homosexual, which led to his suicide. The project had a progress-to-production clause, which was one factor in the

Announced for development earlier this year , Warner Bros. has decided not to move forward with Imitation Game , which J. Blakeson had planned to direct. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, saying that the property is now available for other studios to pursue. Based on a true story, the Graham Moore script made the 2011 "Black List" of unproduced screenplays, telling the true story of Alan Turing, the man who cracked the Enigma code during World War II. Later in life, he killed himself after being criminally prosecuted for his homosexuality. Leonardo DiCaprio was once said to be interested in starring as Turing and the trade suggests that his lack of commitment is what ultimately lead to Warner Bros. passing on the rights.

Ranking pretty high on last year’s Black List was Eddie O’Keefe and Chris Hutton‘s When the Street Lights Go On — it came in second behind Graham Moore‘s Imitation Game, which is also making its way to the big screen. Now, according to Deadline, the team have landed Brett Morgen to direct their drama, through Anonymous Content.
Known predominantly for his documentary work (including the Robert Evans piece The Kid Stays in the Picture and Chicago 10), Morgen will make his feature debut with a story that “revolves around a teen boy who becomes obsessed with solving a murder case involving a young girl that has their sleepy suburban town in a panic in the summer of 1982.” If you’re getting flashbacks to Stand By Me, don’t worry — the project will be in a similar “vein” as the classic coming-of-age tale. Topping last year's The Black List, Graham Moore's Imitation Game tells the fascinating true story of English mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing. Since the spec script about the historical figure checks off so many awards-bait boxes, it obviously received a lot of attention from some big name actors including Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, after a few months of silence the highly-regarded project finally seems to be moving forward by approaching to J. Blakeson to direct. Variety reports that the director, who made his feature debut with the taut and (mostly) intelligent crime thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed, is in talks to take on Moore's Imitation Game. The World War II-set period piece is about Turing's famous efforts cracking the German Enigma Code during the conflict as well as his lifelong battle with hiding his homosexuality which, uh, didn't end well. Blakeson may not have much experience, but he' has...

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the film rights to Erik Larson's non-fiction book "The Devil in the White City" reports Deadline.
Set against the backdrop of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, it tells the intertwining stories of fair architect Daniel H. Burnham and serial killer H.H. Holmes, a charming sociopath who used a hotel he built near the fairgrounds to lure victims.
Complete with gas chamber and crematorium, Holmes would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study. Holmes killed at least twenty-seven people, mostly young women, though some say the number was closer to nearly two hundred.
A film adaptation was previously setup in 2003 at Cruise/Wagner and then a few years later at Paramount. Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way picked up the project late last year and Warners acquired the rights from them.

If it seems like Leonardo DiCaprio has been churning out one awesome movie after another for years now, well, it's because he has been. "J. Edgar," "Inception," "Shutter Island," "The Departed" "The Aviator" and next year's hotly anticipated "The Great Gatsby" -- most actors would be thrilled to have that many quality films over an entire career, much less a handful of years. The only question is, where can he go from here?
How about to the depths of hell itself?
Metaphorically speaking, of course: According to Deadline, DiCaprio is attached to star as notoriously sadistic -- and prolific -- serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes in the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of the acclaimed true crime bestseller "The Devil in the White City." Is there any juicy role DiCaprio isn't going to get?

Scriptwriter Graham Moore made the news last week when his script about British wartime code breaker Alan Turing, who cracked the Enigma code during World War II but killed himself after being persecuted for his homosexuality, became the top Black List vote-getter on Franklin Leonard’s 2011 Black List of the Best Unproduced Screenplays. According to Deadline, Moore’s ranking certainly helped persuade Warner Bros. to hire the Chicago-native screenwriter to adapt Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City; about a serial killer loose in Chicago's 1893 Worlds Fair. Leonardo DiCaprio remained committed to both produce and star in The Devil in the White City as Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who murdered 200 people during the World’s Fair.

He burst on the U.S. media scene first on William F. Buckley Jr.'s television series Firing Line, then on CNN's Larry King Live and Crossfire in the early Reagan Presidency. He (along with now presidential candidate Newt Gingrich) knew immediately that cable television was the new media play for serious public policy combat. The "disruptors," as our web friends say now. Hitchens didn't talk to the empty chairs each night on C-span as Gingrich did to make his points and show the American people that he was still at work, he just swung for the rafters with every comment on the only two cable shows.
Pat Buchanan, a great verbal brawler in his own right, is the only person I ever saw who could anticipate the blows.

My former colleague Adam Dawtrey had a good scoop about Harry Potter director David Yates helming a feature version of the long running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. That’s going to take several years to get a script, and he’ll need a job in the meantime. Warner Bros, which employed Yates on four Potter films including the finale, is trying hard to tempt him to direct Imitation Game, the script that the studio paid seven figures to buy last month. The Graham Moore-scripted drama is about Alan Turing, the genius and WWII hero who poisoned himself with a cyanide laced apple after being criminally prosecuted for being a homosexual. Studio has been waiting weeks to hear if Yates will bite. Stay tuned.

Warner Bros has snapped up first-time screenwriter Graham Moore's script The Imitation Game, based on the life of codebreaker Alan Turing.
Turing was the English mathematician and cryptographer whose work was key to deciphering Germany's wartime Enigma codes. He's regarded as the founder of computer science.
Prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952, Turing accepted female hormone treatment ('chemical castration') instead of prison and killed himself with a cyanide-laced apple two years later.
Deadline reports that the studio outbid several independent companies because it has Leonardo DiCaprio keen to star in the project and Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code, Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon) interested in directing.
The script is based on Andrew Hodges' biography Alan Turing: The Enigma. Producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowksy worked with Moore on the screenplay.

Leonardo DiCaprio ”has the inside track” to play Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game" which has just been sold to Warner Bros. Pictures says Deadline.
Graham Moore’s script deals with Turing, an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, computer scientist, criminally prosecuted and chemically castrated homosexual, and tortured soul who committed suicide by eating a cyanide-laced apple.
Turing was highly influential in the founding of computer science and artificial intelligence, along with devising techniques for breaking German ciphers. He was also one of the earliest to explore the biological process of morphogenesis.
Ron Howard is reportedly interested in directing the project which Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky will produce. The latter pair own the rights to Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography which was used to construct the script.

How Leonardo DiCaprio even has time to develop an outside interest in potential new projects is beyond me, what with his upcoming turn in J. Edgar, his new role in Django Unchained, and his apparent interest in starring in a Satori adaptation (and that’s just a quick list of the actor’s most recent attachments). But DiCaprio has apparently found a minute or two in his schedule to chase a project about math genius Alan Turing. Warner Bros. has picked up first-time screenwriter Graham Moore's spec script The Imitation Game, about the life and times of math genius Alan Turing, for a seven-figure sum today, outbidding several other indie companies. Although no stars or directors are actually attached at this time, the company is said to have picked up the script because DiCaprio is eyeing the lead role. (WB also recently [2] bought rights to the novel Satori as a possible DiCaprio film.) Ron Howard, whose last foray into truth-based dramas about brilliant but tortured mathematicians won him Best Picture and Best Director, is reportedly interested in directing. More details after the jump. Turing isn't exactly a household name, but among certain circles, he's a legend. The highly influential computer scientist, mathematician, cryptanalyst, and logician...

Warner Bros have secured the rights to the biopic of British maths genius Alan Turing, and it seems as though Leonardo DiCaprio is their top choice for the role.
Leonardo DiCaprio remains a busy man. With the lead role in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming J Edgar, as well as roles in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained lined up, as well as being rumoured to be paying the role of an assassin in the adaptation of Santori, Mr DiCaprio doesn’t exactly seem short on work at the moment. And he might just have a bit more on his plate: he’s linked with playing the role of British maths genius Alan Turing.
Turing was instrumental in breaking German ciphers during the Second World War, and later, in the development of computer science and artificial intelligence. Sadly, despite how brilliant he was and the...

Spies, codebreaking, and World War II, Alan Turing was the math genius who not only helped win World War II but also created one of the earliest computers and Warner Brothers just bought the rights to tell his story. If that wasn’t already interesting enough Warner Bros. wants Leonardo DiCaprio to play the part of Alan Turing.
First time screenwriter Graham Moore’s The Imitation Game was purchased by the studio in a seven figure deal in which Warner Bros. had actually outbid themselves because Leonardo DiCaprio has expressed interest in playing the lead with Ron Howard interested in the director’s chair.
Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky owned the rights to Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography Alan Turing: The Enigma and worked with Moore for more than a year to get the script just right. The script has been hailed as the best script they have read in years.

It looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is continuing his multi-decade "don't call me Jack Dawson" tour with yet another challenging role.
The actor, who rose to prominence with his Oscar-nominated role as Johnny Depp's mentally handicapped brother in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," may be taking on a new kind of troubled mind as British mathematical genius Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game."
Turing, who served as a cryptanalyst in an effort to crack German codes during WWII, played an integral role in the development of the computer as we know it today. Two years after being chemically castrated by the British government following his admission of engaging in a homosexual relationship, Turing committed suicide by eating a cyanide-laced apple.
Deadline reports that DiCaprio has been chomping at the bit to land the part and that Warner Brothers is interested in attaching his name to the Graham Moore-written project.

Alan Turing isn't a name many (if anyone) would recognize, but it's often the low-key biopics like this one that make the more interesting films. Warner Bros. have just purchased "The Imitation Game," a spec script about the brilliant Turing from first-time scribe Graham Moore for a seven-figure amount, with none other than Leonardo DiCaprio "chasing" the leading role. The actor's potential involvement is reportedly a major reason why the script created so much interest with Ron Howard, who is rumored to be eyeing a return to math genius territory after "A Beautiful Mind," expressing his interest in helming a…...

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has acquired newcomer Graham Moore's script The Imitation Game as a possible vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio to star in. The film is based on the life of Alan Turing, an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist. The site says that first-time producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky owned the rights to Andrew Hodges' definitive biography "Alan Turing: The Enigma" and worked with Moore for more than a year. The book is described as follows: Alan Turing (1912-1954) was a British mathematician who made history. His breaking of the German U-boat Enigma cipher in World War II ensured Allied-American control of the Atlantic. But Turing.=;s vision went far beyond the desperate wartime struggle. Already in...

Inception actor may portray British maths genius in forthcoming biopic, The Imitation Game
Leonardo DiCaprio is the frontrunner to play Alan Turing in a forthcoming biopic of the British mathematics genius and codebreaker, reports Deadline. On Tuesday, Warner Bros bought a script by first-time screenwriter Graham Moore that centres on the second world war hero.
Turing was largely written out of 2001's Enigma, perhaps the best-known portrayal of the Bletchley Park codebreakers, even though he was the leading figure at Britain's wartime decryption centre. Michael Apted's film presents a character named Jericho, played by Dougray Scott, who is clearly resembles the man often credited as the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. However, Jericho is a heterosexual who becomes a love interest for Kate Winslet's character in the film, while Turing was a homosexual who was prosecuted by British authorities for his sexual activities after the war...

Warner Bros. has picked up a new spec script, The Imitation Game, written by Graham Moore, for what has to be one of the most promising projects I’ve read about recently.
The reason behind their acquisition of the script, Collider report, is that it already has two major talents interested in boarding the project in the form of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ron Howard.
The Imitation Game follows the life of genius British computer scientist and mathematician, Alan Turing, the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, whose work ultimately led to the creation of the computers we use today. And his life can be desribed as,
“absurdly suited for the cinematic ups and downs of a biopic. Turing was integral in the development of the modern computer, and a key codebreaker for the British during World War II. And the downs: Turing was criminally prosecuted for his homosexuality, elected chemical castration over prison,...

No one should be surprised that Leonardo DiCaprio is a busy guy. J. Edgar hitting theaters this fall and Django Unchained getting ready to shoot in the imminent future for a release next Christmas would be enough, but he may get into the franchise game with Satori, and Martin Scorsese has got a thing or two cooking at the moment.
We now have another film to put on his roster: Deadline tells us that Warner Bros. has picked up a spec script called The Imitation Game for the actor to lead. Said spec follows Alan Turing, a British genius who helped devise things that seem basic to us by this point — algorithms and artificial intelligence among them, the latter of which was greatly affected by the Turning test, a process that, you know, tests how well a machine can function in terms of its own intelligence. Not to mention, he...

The Imitation Game based on Alan Turing: The Enigma, may land Leonardo DiCaprio Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up a spec script from Graham Moore, a first time screenwriter, focusing on Alan Turing. Turing, born Alan Mathison Turing on June 23rd, 1912 was an English computer scientist, mathematician, logician and cryptanalyst who was highly influential in the development of computer science. With his Turing machine, he provided a formalization of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" which played a significant role in the creation of the modern computer. He is called the father of modern computer science and artificial intelligence.

Exclusive: To anyone with an interest in those Enigma codebreakers who helped win WWII and the math geniuses whose work led to the creation of the earliest computers, then the name Alan Turing holds quite a lot of fascination. This British historical figure most prominent from 1940 through 1955 is also the subject of a big spec script sale today. First-time screenwriter Graham Moore’s The Imitation Game was snapped up by Warner Bros in a 7-figure deal. I’ve learned that the studio outbid half a dozen indie companies because Leonardo DiCaprio ”has the inside track” to play the lead and was chasing the project. But so far no talent is attached. I hear Ron Howard is interested in directing. First-time producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky owned the rights to Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography Alan Turing: The Enigma and worked with Moore for more than a year to get the script just right.
