Pffft, and here I thought that the first-look images of David Harbour as Hellboy was going to be the coolest bit of news that I'd report on today. As it turns out, there's something even more exciting (for me at least) going down, as it's been announced that Professor Marston And The Wonder Woman director Angela Robinson is teaming up with comic book creator Terry Moore... After the unpredictable success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” fans have been sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the new spin-off of “The Walking Dead” – “Fear The Walking Dead.”
“The Walking Dead,” based on the comic books created by Robert Kirkman and Terry Moore, first premiered in October 2010 and will be going into its sixth season this coming October. The drama series follows the lives of a number of people, specifically a group of people that came together, as they try to survive in the weeks and months following a zombie apocalypse. However, it is not only about how the group fights off the zombies but human strangers as well.

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

I had a pretty horrific nightmare on Wednesday night, after I got home from the comic book shop. I dreamt that I was Back in the comic book shop, looking for issues of the ongoing series currently being reviewed in this column. Anything would do; ‘Hinterkind’, ‘The Fox’, ‘Pretty Deadly’, ‘Letter 44′, anything… but as I scanned the “New This Week” rack, I found myself in a panic; There Was Nothing! Not a single ongoing title! Surely, I thought, I wasn’t look closely enough. But my intensified search was for naught; it was as I feared. I had no choice but to resort to picking up three New titles to review. Confidently, I once again perused the rack of fresh titles of the day, and the pit in my stomach sank to a depth beyond what I’d ever known. I Beg Of You, I screamed silently to the comic book gods,...

Mickey Rooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger were among the Hollywood figures who came out to pay their respects to a man who was eulogized as "Mr. Paramount."
A.C. Lyles, a beloved employee of Paramount Pictures for more than 80 years who passed away at the age of 95 on Sept. 27, was remembered by friends and family at a memorial service on the Paramount lot on Monday afternoon.
Among those who packed the Paramount Theatre -- the lobby of which was decorated with photos of Lyles with everyone from Prince Charles to Elvis Presley to Shirley Temple -- were legends of Hollywood's Golden Age, such as Mickey Rooney, Jane Withers, Terry Moore, Ruta Lee and Anne Jeffreys, as well as a spattering of more recent stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and more than a few people from other walks of life whom Lyles had befriended over the years.

It has been a while since I dropped into a random year’s field of Supporting Actress nominees. Still, as I have re/screened the relevant films in preparation for Saturday afternoon's Supporting Actress Smackdown, it’s startling how familiar the 1952 roster feels. Remember that “Best Supporting Actress” was only in its 15th year or so (having been introduced in 1936, almost ten years after the Oscar game got started) but, already by 1952, the category seemed to have established some of its most enduring quirks.
1952’s nominated roles are definitely cut from Oscar’s favorite cloth: the hooker with a heart; the hale helpmeet; the full force of youth; the long (briefly) suffering wife; and the shrewish “ex.”
Oscar loves a type - you see these types still!

We're having daily nooners with the supporting actresses of '52 in preparation for this weekend's Smackdown. But I hope I'm not burning out all our comment juice with these lead-up posts. So today, an "artistic" detour. Though we sometimes lament that movies are made by committee or that artistic decisions are determined by bank ledgers at huge corporations, it's always been true that the movies have been been hybrid babies, born from both business decisions and artistic concerns. Still, even for the fame-craving, what draws (most) people to showbiz is some kind of creative urge or spirit. So the movies have more than their share of artistically inclined characters within them. Moulin Rouge (the 1952 version) is about a famous artist, Singin in the Rain is about (singing & dancing) actors, and The Bad and the Beautiful is about all sorts of creative types: actors, writers, directors. Which led me to this train of thought.

Terry Moore has been self-publishing comics since the early 1990s and boasts a graceful, soft-spoken wisdom about storytelling and human life. Rachel Rising, Moore’s ongoing comic book involving resurrection and other supernatural goings-on, has recently been optioned for television, but he became a comic book legend far before that, drawing ordinary people facing daily struggles in Strangers In Paradise. We talked on the final day of San Diego Comic-Con, when both of us were exhausted. It was the perfect way to end the crazy weekend on a pensive note.
Famous Monsters. I wanted to talk about Rachel Rising, and specifically about its genre, which your books seem to defy quite successfully. A lot of people call Rachel Rising a horror book. I think I’d call it a “weird tale”. Is it a horror book to you, and why?
Terry Moore. I think of it as classic horror, like Hitchcock and Universal Studios horror.

Authors discuss the inclusion of romantic elements in their action-packed novels. Protagonists must battle the forces of evil while trying to keep the world (and often their lovers) safe from destruction. I can bet that for horror fans, it feels like television is entering a Neo-Golden Age. Why, you might ask? Well, FX has the third season of American Horror Story coming this fall, The Walking Dead has achieved record ratings for AMC, A&E and NBC both reinterpreted classic movie characters for their prequel series Bates Motel – which already secured a second season – and Hannibal, which is slowly growing into a success. Oh, and Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove premieres on Netflix this Friday. Now, Alcon Entertainment Group’s TV branch, Alcon Television Group, will take on a small screen adaptation of comic-book horror mystery series...

I’ve never quite realized why comic book series are so sought after for adaptation into television shows. Rachel Rising, nominated for best new series at the 2012 Harvey Awards, is the latest comic book having its property picked up and it is because it’s so new compared to so many other books that I wonder if adapting it now is such a good idea. The plot of the books is cool – I’ll get to that in a bit – but what happens if the show catches up to the book’s story? It’s possible given how slow comics get through story. Would the show just make up its own story?
Those concerns don’t seem to matter to the Alcon Television Group, the division of Alcon Entertainment that picked up Rachel Rising. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Terry Moore, creator of Rachel Rising, will be on as an executive producer,...

Rachel Rising, the horror comic series created by critically acclaimed award-winning writer/artist Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise), is now on its way to television. According to the Hollywood Reporter, independent company Alcon is slated to produce the show; Alcon exec Ben Roberts served as a production consultant on The Walking Dead, and the producers will no doubt be shaping the series with an eye toward the same audience. Described as “a horror story for people who don't like horror stories,” Rachel Rising landed a Best New Series nomination for the 2012 Harvey Awards. It spins the dark tale of a woman who wakes up dead in a shallow grave and sets about solving the mystery of how she got there. Along the way, Rachel uncovers dark supernatural secrets about the surrounding town, while being tracked by a mysterious blond woman, and crossing paths with a homicidal girl named Zoe. Alcon...

Lancaster in director Robert Aldrich's superb 1972 Western Ulzana's Raid, one of many films to be screened in tribute to the Oscar-winning screen legend.
In-person:
Joanna Lancaster, Susie Lancaster, actor Ed Lauter and author James Naremore (4/5); actress Terry Moore (4/8); author Alan K. Rode (5/4).
Burt Lancaster was an American original. Born in 1913 in the melting pot of East Harlem, he first acted on the stage of the Union Settlement House before his natural athleticism drew him to a successful career as a circus aerialist. The strapping, blue-eyed, blonde with the legendary grin later referred to Hollywood as “nothing more than a big circus” and when fate brought him into the big top, he seized center ring. A chance meeting with a theatrical agent in 1945 (while picking up his future wife, Norma, for lunch) led to an appearance on Broadway and a contract with producer Hal Wallis who planned to introduce him...

2012 was such a remarkable year for lesbian and bisexual women that we're already psyched on 2013. Here are 50 reasons why.
1. Gay weddings
Photo: David Ryder/Getty
With marriage equality becoming a reality in more and more states by the minute, it's going to be a good year for the men-loving-men and women-loving-women who have been waiting to say "I do." Some of them for their whole lives.
2. Homophobia isn't profitable anymore

This fact was learned the hard way by Boy Scouts of America when they lost funding from both the federal government and big businesses because they refused to accept gay scouts and leaders.

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

Terry Moore has announced a Strangers in Paradise (Sip) prose novel and an all-ages project. The Sip project will mark the 20th anniversary of the acclaimed comic, the writer and artist revealed at San Diego Comic-Con International, reports Comic Book Resources. "I'm approaching 60 and I don't want to be 65 with a monthly deadline for art pages," said Moore. "I'm thinking about my future - I can be 75 and still write. [The readers] have matured, so I would like to write a deeper, more introspective story." He also revealed that his current Rachel Rising series will conclude in 30 (more)...

We got an email alerting us that AMC had released a new image revealing the return of a character The Walking Dead fans haven’t seen since the first season of the hit AMC zombie show based on the Robert Kirkman/Terry Moore/Charlie Adlard Image comic. White trash Merle Dixon, played by Michael Rooker has a first season 3 look here in a production photo released by AMC. What’s slightly baffling to me about how this is being reported in some spots though is that I thought we already knew this was going to happen some three months ago.
related | Walking Dead Season 3 – The Governor Solo-style!
The AMC photo reacquaints us with Daryl’s brother, the racist we did see for a visage of for minute last season but really last saw left on the roof in season 1, which probably isn’t too far off with how dangerous Atlanta really is without zombies.

Book: Rachel Rising # 7
Written By: Terry Moore
Pencils By: Terry Moore
Publisher: Abstract Studio
Release Date: Out Now In Stores & Digital Download (Via Comixology)
Rating:
After the events of issues 1-6, Terry Moore could have been forgiven if this seventh issue repeated the key points of Rachel Rising in the hope new readers could find an entry point into this blossoming tale but instead he opts for adding further depth to the mysteries unfolding in this fantastic new series. Beginning with some very peculiar moments with talking snow as well a strangers weird chatting with Rachel as she visits the hospital, issue seven feels delightfully odd very quickly.
Moving on, we’re introduced to Detective Corpell, who as standard procedure is investigating the car accident from the previous issue. Talking to Rachel while visiting her injured Aunt Johnny, there’s a sense this detective will play a bigger part in the story going forward.

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

On The Road Letter: Jack Kerouac Wanted Marlon Brando for Dean; Kerouac Would Play Sal [Photo: Leslie Caron.] On the Road was never made into a movie during Jack Kerouac's lifetime. However, the lesser-known The Subterraneans, which Kerouac mentions in his letter to Marlon Brando, was turned into an MGM movie in 1960. Needless to say, the final film had little in common with Kerouac's semi-autobiographical novella about an interethnic romance. In the Subterraneans movie, Kerouac's character, Leo Percepied, is played by George Peppard. The "colored" girl, Mardou Fox, minus the color but with the addition of a French accent is played by Leslie Caron. Others in the film's cast were Janice Rule, Roddy McDowall, Anne Seymour, and Jim Hutton (as the fictional Allan Ginsberg). Former screenwriter Ranald MacDougall (Mildred Pierce, Possessed, The Hasty Heart) directed from a screenplay by Robert Thom. "While none of the portrayals is distinguished," wrote A.H. Weiler in the New York Times,...

In October 2006-2010, five annual Wonder Woman Day events raised over $110,000 for Domestic Violence programs in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. The five-year combination of auctions of over 1,100 original art pieces, plus collectibles, autograph signings, and photo opportunities garnered spectacular turnouts and four Portland Mayoral Proclamations.
This year, the event will take on a new name and an expanded mission! On October 30, 2011, the new Women of Wonder Day — again as a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month — will take place, returning to Excalibur Books in Portland, Oregon, and Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey, as well as at Heroes and Fantasies in San Antonio, Texas.
This year’s contributions for auction include not only artwork featuring heroines from the world of comics — Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Storm, Michonne from The Walking Dead, Leetah from ElfQuest — but also from the world of media as well, including Lisbeth Salander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer,...

Leonardo DiCaprio came of age as a star in the late nineties and his collaboration in the first decade of the twenty-first century with Martin Scorsese allowed the director to get his money to make three films together, the second of which is out this week on Blu-ray.
The Aviator is an epic telling of the rich story of the influential businessman and aviator Howard Hughes with his ambition and talents as a man of new ideas perilously coupled with his misplaced trust and his, initially, latent paranoia. A look at The Walking Dead season 2 has arrived online via rock smashing clip! The Walking Dead had a successful freshmen season for AMC and despite initial rumors of upheaval after the season’s conclusion, creators and fans seem to be back in the zone since, entertaining dangling, fun, rumors of Stephen King and Edgar Wright contributing to season 2. What we do know, however, and have been reporting on as they are announced, are second season additions to the cast. Pruitt Taylor Vince was cast as Otis last month, as was the duo of Lauren Cohan and Scott Wilson as Maggie and Hershel Greene.
The Walking Dead is based off of the comic book by Robert Kirkman and Terry Moore (replaced early on by Charlie Adlard), published by Image comics. Season 2 is scheduled for a 13 episode run starting this October. The teaser below was debuted on last night’s season...
