“I will never work on a more important film than this one,” declares Ken Burns of “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” the three-part, six-hour PBS film he co-produced and co-directed (with frequent collaborators Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein) and released last September. Coming from Burns, that’s a mouthful, considering he is perhaps the most celebrated documentarian of our time and the foremost chronicler of the American experience. He’s a filmmaker who is responsible for many of the most treasured nonfiction series and biographies ever put to film, among them “The Civil War,” “Baseball,” “Jazz,” “Jackie Robinson” and “The Vietnam War.” A two-time Oscar nominee and five-time Emmy winner, Burns is without peer on the documentary production stage. And he is as proud of “U.S. and the Holocaust” as anything he’s ever done in his four-decade filmmaking career. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“I’m Jewish, and I thought I knew a fair amount about this topic, and it was revelatory to find out how much I didn’t know, especially about the American side of the story,” admits Lynn Novick, the co-producer and co-director (along with Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein) of the powerful three-part PBS documentary film “The U.S. and the Holocaust.” What Novick and the filmmakers discovered in their deep and impeccable research was that the long-held assumption that Americans helped save the world from Nazism and totalitarianism and were in fact liberators is true only up to a point. During the late 1930s and ’40s, the United States was as guilty of turning its back on Jewish refugees and their brethren being slaughtered by the millions in Europe during Hitler’s industrial-scale program of extermination. Congratulations are in order for the producers of “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” which just won Best Competition Program at Monday’s Primetime Emmy ceremony. The Amazon Prime Video feel-good series beat out “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which was heavily favored to win its fifth consecutive Emmy in the category. “Drag Race” remains tied with “The Voice” by winning four overall trophies, while “The Amazing Race” holds the record at 10 total wins. The five shows “Lizzo” defeated this year were “The Amazing Race,” “Drag Race,” “Nailed It,” “Top Chef” and “The Voice.”
“Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” is now a three-time Emmy winner after claiming a pair of trophies last week for director Nneka Onuorah and the picture editing team. Watch our recent panel interview with Onuorah. The program premiered on March 25, 2022 and chronicles the story of Lizzo trying to find her titular “big grrrl” backup dancers.

It came as no surprise that “RuPaul’s Drag Race” emerged from the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations as the year’s most nominated reality show. It has eight bids overall, including Best Competition Program. If it keeps winning the top prizes, which it has been doing for years now, then RuPaul Charles will extend the record he set last year as the most awarded Black individual in Emmy history. Do you think voters will add to the RuPaul Emmys record?

No Black artists have won more Primetime Emmys than multi-camera cinematographer Donald A. Morgan and reality star RuPaul Charles. As it happens they both have multiple nominations this year. Will they add to their historic awards hauls?
Morgan currently holds the record as the most awarded Black individual at the Emmys with 10 trophies on his mantel, and a whopping seven of those came for his lighting direction for “Home Improvement”. Recently he won three more times for his multi-camera cinematography on Netflix’s “The Ranch” and is the defending champion in his category.

When you mention to Donald A. Morgan that he holds a distinctive place in Emmy history by being the Black artist who has won the most Emmys in history (10 to date), he takes a notable emotional pause to take it all in. Only RuPaul Charles has the capability to eclipse that record. But Morgan will not make it easy for the “Drag Race” superstar. In the Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series category this year, Morgan occupies three of the five nominee spots, for his work on Fox’s “Last Man Standing,” ABC’s “The Conners” and Netflix’s “The Upshaws” (seen above). And those odds might dictate one more statue on the mantle.
“What’s really crazy is the Academy told us cinematographers that we had to up the submissions in order to keep the category,” says Morgan. “So, we went from 15 [submissions], hoping to take it to 25. But they said,...

A letter from International Cinematographers Guild President John Lindley and 13 other top cinematographers was sent to Hollywood studios urging them to reduce excessively long workday hours on film sets as they resumed talks with IATSE on Tuesday on a new collective bargaining agreement.
Along with Lindley, the letter was signed by four Oscar-winning cinematographers, including Roger A. Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki (“The Revenant”), Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”) and John Toll (“Braveheart”).
“We are Local 600 Directors of Photography who are writing to express our ongoing concern about the hazards of unsafe working hours, a practice that continues despite all the medical and indisputable evidence of the harm caused by fatigue,” their letter says. “Most notable are the numerous car accidents our colleagues have suffered in recent years, including the weekend before we entered these negotiations.”

Hollywood cinematographers have signed a letter urging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to address “the hazards of unsafe working hours” that have plagued the industry for decades.
Among the signatories are Academy Award winners Emmanuel Lubezki (“Gravity”), John Toll (“Braveheart”), Roger Deakins (“1917”), and Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”), as well as Oscar nominee Rodrigo Prieto (“Brokeback Mountain”).
Also signed by John Lindley — president of the International Cinematographers Guild, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 600 — the letter asks producers “to create meaningful change” now.
The letter was obtained by Deadline and written ahead of Tuesday’s contract negotiations between IATSE and the Producers alliance. The letter “notes that drowsy driving after workdays that can last 14 hours or more have contributed to numerous auto accidents over the years, including one that occurred just before the contract talks began in May.”

With diversity among key nominees at the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards up 17% year over year, there is great potential for even more records to be shattered come the Sept. 19 ceremony.
Four of the six slots for lead drama actor went to Black actors, two of whom are former winners — Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) and Billy Porter (“Pose”). If either of those two win, he would be only the second Black actor to repeat a victory in this category.
In the Emmys’ 73-year history there have only been two people of color who won back-to-back acting trophies in the same category (and both were men). In addition to Cosby, Charles S. Dutton picked up statues for “The Practice” in 2002 and “Without a Trace” in 2003, both in the guest drama actor category. The Emmy nominations were announced Tuesday, and the TV Academy provided historic representation across its acting categories, despite a couple of questionable hiccups.

It’s also the first piece of visual art to have a Black actor nominated in every eligible acting category, with Michael K. Williams and Aunjanue Ellis also picking up mentions.
