"Do you want to hear the next bit of the story?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Stopmotion, a very strange and peculiar indie horror film from English filmmaker Robert Morgan. This first premiered at both Fantastic Fest 2023 and the Sitges Film Festival last year, where I originally saw it. Yes, there is stop-motion animation work in this, though it's really a story about a woman who is creating a film. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own. Then it gets really weird! "An unnerving display of psychological horror reminiscent of Censor (2021)." IFC also adds that this features "truly unforgettable, Švankmajer-esque animation." Aisling Franciosi stars as Ella,...

Top of the list is Timestalker, the debut feature film from actor and writer Alice Lowe. Billed as a “reincarnation romcom,” the film follows the tale of one woman’s unrequited love spanning several centuries. Lowe directs from a screenplay she wrote. She also stars in the film alongside Jacob Anderson (Game Of Thrones), Aneurin Barnard (David Copperfield), Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education), and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz). Vaughan Sivell and Western Edge Pictures are producers. The film is currently eyeing a 2023 release.

The Critics Choice Awards annually honor achievements in cinematic and television work. They often set the stage in terms of Oscar award winners as well. The Critics Choice Association is the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 525 media critics and entertainment journalists. It was established in 2019 with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the intersection between film, television and streaming content.

The hustle and bustle of awards season is nearing an end, with Oscar voting getting underway on March 17. So naturally, every contender is looking to gain an advantage, and the BAFTA and Critics Choice ceremonies, which take place March 13, provide that opportunity.
At Cca, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” lead the tally with 11 nominations apiece, including best picture. Still, with a group of more than 500 North America-based broadcast journalists and writers doing the voting, we shouldn’t expect either to triumph unequivocally.

At BAFTA, “Belfast’s” six-nom tally isn’t as robust as Focus Features would have liked, but prospects look strong for the film to pick up wins for original screenplay, outstanding British film and possibly supporting actor Ciarán Hinds, who is a legend across the pond. Last Updated March 10: “Cruella” and “Dune” received Oscar momentum as the period and sci-fi film winners March 9 at the 24th Costume Designer Guild Awards. This clearly puts “Cruella’s” two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven in the driver’s seat against “Dune’s” Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan, and “West Side Story’s” Paul Tazewell.
Last Updated February 10: The costume design Oscar nominees — “Cruella” (Disney), “Cyrano” (MGM/UA), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight/Disney), and “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney) — are all distinguished and eclectic, delving into a range of period styles that inform the characters and their worlds. It’s a race that boasts three Oscar winners — “Cruella’s” Jenny Beaven, “Cyrano’s” Jacqueline Durran, and “Nightmare Alley’s” Luis Sequeira (“The Shape of Water”) — two previous nominees — “Cyrano’s” co-designer Massimo Cantini Parrini (“Pinocchio”) and “Dune’s” Jacqueline West — and “West Side Story’s” acclaimed...

“Cruella” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on March 9 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over three of its Oscar rivals — “Cyrano,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” — plus “House of Gucci.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Dune,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Wednesday. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Coming 2 America.”
In its 23-year history, the CDG has previewed only 11 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; eight of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners two have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
In 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars.

It’s that guild awards time of year. A period where every night Los Angeles has a guild or union handing out their peer-reviewed honors. Happily, this year’s ceremonies have (mostly) returned to in-person events and that was the case for the 2022 Costume Guild Awards where Jenny Beavan looks to propel herself to her third Academy Award win thanks to her work on “Cruella.”

“Dune”, “Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” were the film winners at the 2022 Costume Designers Guild Awards on Wednesday night.
Back in person after the pandemic, the awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Andrew Rannells and Casey Wilson.
Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez discussed the role the awards and the guild played in the pandemic, saying, “As a community, we have survived a life-changing pandemic industry and been on the brink of work stoppage.”
Perez also called for “pay equity now.” This has been an ongoing plea from Perez and the costume designers who fight for pay equity. He said, costume designers, are “historically underpaid for too long. It’s about costume designers in the costume department being valued as a major asset to the industry and compensated accordingly.”

The mordant side of Jewish humor is pushed to an extreme in Shawn Snyder’s debut feature “To Dust.” This gently absurdist — yet also sometimes downright icky — tale revolves around a grief-stricken Hasidic widower who enlists a Gentile biology teacher in an obsessive quest to grasp the decomposition process of his late wife’s body. As story concepts go, that’s an exceptionally unappealing one, particularly for what plays mostly as a low-key buddy comedy. Nonetheless, the deft execution and astute lead performances ultimately make this acquired taste of a movie not only digestible, but rather charming.

The Tenant In Room 7 Is Very Small, Very Twisted, And Very Mad.
Fran Henenlotter’s Basket Case (1982) is currently available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video
The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter (Brain Damage, Frankenhooker), 1982’s Basket Case is perhaps his most revered – a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Duane Bradley is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial’s homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes.

Usually it’s a lot easier and quicker for me to review films one by one but I thought for this release from Vinegar Syndrome, it’s only right to review the release as a whole.

It’s an ancient debate that refuses to go away: Melbourne versus Sydney. Is the power in media and advertising drifting up north, asks Robin Hicks
The first story I wrote since moving from Sydney to Melbourne six months ago was on the closure of DraftFCB Melbourne, a decent but painfully shy ad agency with a 50-year history that, as it turned out, was too reliant on one major client.
A fortnight later, I covered Publicis Mojo’s Melbourne office making a bunch of redundancies. Some jobs were relocated to Sydney, leaving the once-great office on Southbank with eight staff, down from more than 100 just three years ago.
This news came just three months after the collapse of another ‘once-great’ agency brand The Campaign Palace, which started life on Melbourne’s Cecil Street more than four decades ago.
(By the way, this is a long read. You can read it...
