Sky is to develop a major new UK studio for TV and film productions at Elstree with the backing of its parent company Comcast. The cost of the investment was not disclosed.
The British broadcaster will open Sky Studios Elstree by 2022 and it will work in collaboration with Elstree Studios, the famous home of films including The King’s Speech and TV shows such as The Crown. The two studios will be walking distance from each other.
Subject to planning permission being granted, Sky will open a 32-acre development, consisting of 14 sound stages covering over 20,000 sqft. Other facilities will include production offices, a set construction workshop, screening cinema and post-production and digital facilities.

The ABC in Bournemouth's closure - to make way for new flats - brings to an end the ABC cinema chain in the UK.
The ABC Cinema name has gone through many guises during its time, but we’ve just learned that the UK’s final ABC has closed its doors. The ABC in Bournemouth has shut down for the final time, and will now be developed into flats. These words have been as fun to write as they are to read. Another old cinema gone.
The ABC name dates back to 1928, with the chain formed by Elstree Studios owner John Maxwell. He wanted an outlet to show films made at Elstree, and ABC sort-of stood for Associated British Pictures Corporation. As a child of Birmingham, I remember visits to the ABC Bristol Road and ABC Queensway in my youth, both of which are now long gone.

The four acre studio space has received planning permission from the local council and is expected be completed by late 2017.
Elstree Studios, the UK home to Star Wars in the 1970s and more recently The Danish Girl, has received clearance for a plotted upgrade to its studio offering.
Planning permission has been granted by Hertsmere Borough Council for the four acre development which will be built at the back of the current complex.
The new-build is a 1,950 sqm stage [larger than the current George Lucas stage, pictured] with connected scenery storage, workshops and production offices. The facility is aiming to be operational by late 2017.
A planning committee voted unanimously in favour of the application. The councillors said in a statement: “Elstree Studios is a jewel in Hertsmere’s crown and we should encourage their endeavours in every way.”
Work begin on clearing the space in 2013, with the $6.5m project funded by the council.

Cannes film festival news in brief
A campaign to bring an exhibition devoted to the work of the director Stanley Kubrick to England, where he lived, will be launched in Cannes next week. Kubrick's controversial cult film A Clockwork Orange is to celebrate its 40th birthday at the festival with a screening this week and an appearance from its star, Malcolm McDowell. Kubrick's close friend and assistant for three decades, Anthony Frewin, is to use the occasion to join forces with Roger Morris, the head of Elstree Studios, to call for the popular international exhibition, originally set up in Frankfurt, Germany, to visit Britain. "I think it's time London housed this major exhibition," said Frewin. "Stanley lived in England, near Elstree Studios, for 40 years and brought thousands of dollars into the country and helped launch many careers. It's high time he got the recognition there that he deserves."

Warner Bros, Disney and Paramount thought to be bringing blockbusters to Borehamwood studio in megadeals that will benefit local people
In its heyday it was known as the "British Hollywood" – a world-class film studio where classics such as The Dam Busters and Moby Dick were shot, but in recent lacklustre years Elstree Studios was more likely to have hosted Big Brother than a big star.
Now, however, boosted by the fact that The King's Speech was partly filmed there, the golden age looks to have returned to the Hertfordshire studios once described by Charlie Chaplin as the "home of the British film industry".
After an era of hosting mass-market television shows such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Elstree Studios is exploring ambitious expansion plans. It has bookings from three major Hollywood productions, each with a $100m budget, and is inundated with inquiries from film producers worldwide.
