The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

Justin Hurwitz met Damien Chazelle when both were freshmen in college. Nearly 20 years later, their composer-filmmaker synergy is perhaps the most dynamic in current movies. In Chazelle’s films, Hurwitz’s music is so intuitively synched to the storytelling that the visuals become more alive and happier, as his gorgeously repetitive riffs mix with each other and linger in our minds.
Hurwitz won a Best Score Oscar for Chazelle’s “La La Land” in 2017, along with another statuette for Best Original Song. He’s back at the ceremony again this year for his mighty, moody, idiosyncratic, intoxicating music for Chazelle’s extravagant 1920s Hollywood epic, “Babylon.”
Hurwitz, 38, chatted to TheWrap from his home studio, with a piano to his left and a keyboard to his right.

Carey Mulligan and Margot Robbie know each other, having worked together on Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” which Mulligan starred in and Robbie produced through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment. So when they sit down to discuss their recent projects — Mulligan’s turn in “She Said” as Megan Twohey, the New York Times reporter whose investigative work with Jodi Kantor helped bring down Harvey Weinstein, and Robbie’s portrayal in “Babylon” of Nellie Laroy, a self-destructive silent film star — it’s like watching two old friends chatting. During the conversation, Mulligan talks about getting to know Twohey, and Robbie gives insight into working with Damien Chazelle on the wild provocation that is “Babylon.” Naturally, Robbie’s upcoming summer film, “Barbie,” by way of Greta Gerwig, also comes up.

Reports of a “screaming match” between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh on the set of “Don’t Worry Darling” are “absurd gossip,” according to a Sunday statement signed by 40 crew members.
“As a crew, we’ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we’re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous ‘sources’ quoted in a recent article,” reads the statement obtained by TheWrap. “There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.”
The statement follows a Friday report from Vulture in which an anonymous source recalled a “screaming match” between Wilde and Pugh. The report said then-studio head Toby Emmerich had to intervene and moderate a “long negotiation process” to ensure that Pugh would participate in the movie’s press promotion and “not jeopardize the potential box office.”

They join Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, who are playing the “I Love Lucy” stars, as well as J.K Simmons and Nina Arianda as William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who played Fred and Ethel on the classic sitcom.
Hale will play “I Love Lucy” executive producer and head writer Jess Oppenheimer, and Shawkat and Lacy will play the show’s longtime writing partners Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr.
Also joining “Being the Ricardos” and rounding out the cast are Clark Gregg (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Nelson Franklin (“Veep”), John Rubinstein (“Family”), Linda Lavin (“The Good Wife”), Robert Pine (“CHiPs”) and Christopher Denham (“Billions”).

Amazon Studios has announced the start of principal photography on writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s next drama film, “Being the Ricardos.” Filming started this week in Los Angeles. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem star as real-life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the faces behind the classic 1950s TV sitcom “I Love Lucy,” which centered on the happy but idiosyncratic marriage of Lucille and Ricky Ricardo.
Working in a confined timeframe similar to Sorkin’s script for “Steve Jobs,” “Being the Ricardos” unfolds during one production week of “I Love Lucy” — starting with the Monday table read through Friday filming with a live audience — when Lucy and Desi face a crisis that could end their careers, as well as their marriage.
Kidman stars as Ball opposite fellow Oscar winner Bardem as her husband Desi Arnaz, the Cuban-American actor, musician, and president of their television production company, Desilu Productions.

While on the surface, director James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” is a story about racing, at the heart of it is a character-driven piece about a renegade named Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and the friendship he forges with Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) as he chases a lifelong dream. For the sound team, the characters of the story were far more important than the mechanics around them.
For production sound mixer Steven Morrow, the focus was capturing the dialogue and emotional arc of the characters. While post would record the brunt of the sound effects Morrow detailed a baseline for them to follow. Special microphones were used to record the dialogue during the intense racing scenes.
“We used Dpa 60 lavaliers both on the actors and for planting on the vehicles,” says Morrow. “You wouldn’t normally use those mics for dialogue scenes as they’re reserved for jet-engine-level noise, but...

When it comes to the Oscars, sometimes the fourth time is the charm. At least that could be the case for Bradley Cooper‘s “A Star is Born,” the fourth iteration of a classic tale of doomed love, this one concerning fading rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) and his romance with rising pop artist Ally (Lady Gaga). The box office hit earned eight nominations, including Best Picture. Gold Derby recently spoke with Best Supporting Actor nominee Sam Elliott, songwriter Mark Ronson (“Shallow”), and sound mixer Steven Morrow about their work.

Elliott plays Bobby, Jackson’s older brother and manager, and audiences have remarked how similar Cooper’s voice sounds to his costar. When Elliott first met with Cooper, the actor-director played a tape showcasing his extensive work with a vocal coach.

“A Star is Born” sound mixer Steven Morrow reveals, “This was the first time that a movie was recorded in this way.” Bradley Cooper directs and stars in this drama about a fading musician who helps propel a young singer (Lady Gaga) to stardom, and for the film’s many concert sequences Cooper wanted to create the sense that “everything was live” — no small task. Watch our exclusive video interview with Morrow above.

Cooper wanted to give the audience the feeling that they’re onstage, backstage and in the crowd during the performance scenes. Morrow, who earned a Best Sound Mixing Oscar nomination for “La La Land” (2016), needed to “come up with a system that could record their vocals and have everybody play along, but also record what that room might sound like.

While deep into the standard 7.1 sound mix for “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper was approached about doing a Dolby Atmos mix as well. But he was skeptical. After all, this wasn’t a Marvel superhero movie or a Disney/Pixar animated feature. This movie showcased Cooper performing live, intimate, musical performances with Lady Gaga.
Yet the first-time director and his mixing team experimented with Atmos and came away surprised at the way it isolated the vocals and instruments. Like Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” Atmos delivered a more nuanced and authentic soundscape.

“Atmos crept in at the last hour, but we didn’t think it was gonna work and we didn’t think it was necessary,” said Jason Ruder, the supervising music editor. “But we spent a week doing an Atmos delivery.

For Sony’s “The Front Runner,” which opens wide Nov. 21, director-co-writer Jason Reitman dealt with a very large main cast. The opening shot sets the tone for the movie as it takes in multiple groups of people with different points of view and overlapping conversations. In Robert Altman-esque fashion, various dialogues fade in and out as the always-traveling camera follows Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman), his family, his political team, journalists and the public during the campaign of 1988 as it moves headlong into a sex scandal and its aftermath. While this creative approach makes for a mesmerizing experience for the audience, it presented unusual challenges for Reitman’s below-the-line team. Here’s what he said about the crew.
Sound mixer, Steven Morrow
“Our movie centers on the idea ‘What is relevant? What is important?’ and the audience is often given multiple things to see and listen to.

I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

Governors act on recommendation of sound branch executive committee.
Greg P Russell, who worked on Michael Bay’s war film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, has been removed from the list of sound mixing nominees for an alleged violation of Academy campaign regulations.
The Academy announced the development on Saturday – one day before the 89th annual Academy Awards – after it emerged Russell had called fellow members of the sound branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film.
The action is in direct violation of campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying.
An additional nominee from the film will not replace Russell. The remaining sound mixing nominees from the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees for the 53rd Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2016 in seven categories.
On the film side, strong contenders like “La La Land,” “Rogue One” and “Zootopia” picked up nods, while television series like “Game of Thrones,” “blackish” and “Stranger Things” also received nominations. For the first year, the Cas is honoring Documentary films, with nods like “O.J.: Made in America” and “13th” rounding out this inaugural category.
