Since 2015, there’s been no need to go on a minibreak to a cultural European destination. Richard Ayoade and Joe Lycett have gone for us. They’ve waited at airport security lines displaying their miniature toothpaste tube in a clear plastic bag. They’ve bought mystery crisps from railway vending machines. They’ve been to the museums, tried the local delicacies and gone on the sightseeing tours, so that we could stay luxuriously put.
Indeed, for a good chunk of 2020, staying put was the only option, which is when Travel Man: 48 Hours In…really came into its own. During lockdown, you could spin the globe, choose a location, load up All4 (as it was then known), and have a packed weekend there from the comfort of your sofa. All the experience of short haul travel with none of the having-to-mime-migraine-symptoms-to-a-Hungarian-pharmacist. Bliss!

It’s almost time for Claudia Winkleman to return to her cool, damp burrow, where she’ll remain, out of sight, for the remaining winter months. When her twitching nose smells summer, Winkleman will emerge refreshed, gorge on a pawful of hazelnuts from the forest floor to nourish her glossy coat, and begin the long journey to Scotland to film a third series of The Traitors.
That’s ridiculous, sorry. Claudia Winkleman isn’t a forest creature; she’s a human person, equal parts knitwear and eyeliner. Her oversized jumpers aren’t self-woven in an underground den; she buys them. From monks. Who knit them out of rainclouds and sin.
Apologies. Again. It’s hard not to tip into fantasy when it comes to Claudia Winkleman, because as a creation she is fantastical. A kohl-rimmed alien. She’s funny and weird and distinctive, with a way of speaking that’s...

Kendall. Robinson. Duker. Ó’Briain. Martin. The fight is On.
The winners of Taskmaster series 11-15 are currently doing sit-ups, drinking pints of raw egg, and running up and down the steps outside Chiswick Library. They’re in training for Taskmaster’s third Champion of Champions contest.
A little reminder of the contenders for this title now, on account of the internet having destroyed everybody’s attention spans, and shrunk our ability to retain information for longer than it takes a toaster to pop.
Champion of Champions 3 Line-Up Sarah Kendall
Representing series 11 is the magnificently-maned Sarah Kendall, Australian comic, writer and actor. She’s technically the dunce of this operation going in with a whole-series points score of just 158, but a dynamite chick like her isn’t about to let that get in the way. The woman’s ready for the apocalypse at all times, do not underestimate her.

Time is money, people! We’ve got busy lives these days, and even busier brains, and it’s hard enough to keep up with who’s prime minister, let alone get on top of our ever-growing TV Watch Lists.
So, much like 27% of people according to a recent YouGov survey, I watch a lot of TV at a higher playback speed. It’s easy – BBC iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube and Apple TV all have the option to watch shows at up to 2X the regular speed – so why wouldn’t you?
Yes, we’ll all have some off-limits shows that we want to savour in real time. Mine are Doctor Who, Line of Duty, and something tells me Strictly wouldn’t quite have the same charm if all the contestants were flailing their limbs around in double time. But these are the rare exceptions, the kinds of TV shows we want to thoroughly lose ourselves in.

The best podcast hosts are like friends, but better, because you’ll never have to go to their wedding and can click unsubscribe if they get weird. They’re company when you’re not dressed for company, officemates when you work from home, and family with a pause button.
Comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster on the Off Menu podcast are especially good company because they’re funny gluttons. A cheese boy and a dessert boy/genie who, alongside shadowy lever-puller the Great Benito, are the owner-operators of a dream restaurant that asks guests from Dan Aykroyd to Louis Theroux to name their dream starter, main, side dish, drink and dessert, in that order.
If you’ve yet to have the pleasure, do get involved with this pick of the finest Off Menu episodes from the 200 (!) so far. They’ve been expecting you for some time…

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

There are few bad days that can’t be remedied by watching an episode of Would I Lie To You?
This award-winning BBC panel show has been making us laugh for over 15 years thanks to hilarious repeat performances from the likes of Bob Mortimer and Rhod Gilbert, and the top-tier chemistry between team captains Lee Mack and David Mitchell and host Rob Brydon.
It’s created so many legendary funny moments that picking a favourite is almost impossible, but here are the Would I Lie To You? stories that have gone down in TV history:
16. Henning Wehn Goes Missing in Morocco
Henning Wehn appears to have gone to the Kevin Bridges School of Storytelling (more on that later) – his yarns have a similarly scatter-brained approach that are pleasingly impossible to predict. Here he claims Interpol listed him as a missing person when he went on a bike ride in Spain...

Paul Whitehouse has said he’s not normally as angry as he appears on Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
The BBC Two series follows Whitehouse and fellow comedian Bob Mortimer on various fishing trips around the UK as the pair discuss their respective heart problems.
Whitehouse is a keen angler and often gets frustrated with Mortimer’s lack of technique – the former’s constant reminders of “Don’t wind!” has become the show’s unofficial catchphrase.
Appearing on Kathy Burke’s podcast Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, Whitehouse was asked if he was “surprised” at how angry he got at his colleague “because you don’t half snap at him sometimes”, Burke said.
“I’m not an angry person Kathy, you know that,” the Harry and Paul star responded.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you lose your temper,” Burke confirmed.

Margot Robbie has shared her initial reaction to reading the Barbie script, admitting that she was skeptical that the studio would even allow them to make the movie.
The film, co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and directed by Gerwig, stars Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
The supporting cast includes Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman and Kate McKinnon, some of whom appear to be playing other iterations of Barbie and Ken.
Promotional posters for the film revealed that America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou will be playing “humans”.
“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day,’” Robbie told Bafta. “Because they are never going to let us make this movie.”

Jeremy Renner attended the premiere for his new series, Rennervations, on Tuesday (11 April), capping a remarkable recovery roughly four months after the Avengers star was nearly killed in a snowplough accident.
Renner was surrounded by family and supporters at the premiere in Los Angeles, where he posed for photos and did interviews, at times making use of a cane and a knee scooter.
Renner broke more than 30 bones after he was crushed by his seven-tonne snowplough on New Year's Day while trying to help free a relative's car at his Nevada home. The actor has said he also suffered a pierced lung in the accident.
Rennervations, which premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday (12 April), follows Renner as he transforms large vehicles into community spaces for young people in India, Mexico, Chicago and Nevada.
The purposes range from serving as a mobile music venue to a water filtration truck for a community in India.

Wicked fans have been left in awe of a first-look video teasing the set of the forthcoming screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical.

Netflix is getting a notable addition to its service next week.
Among the wide range of original titles on the streaming platform will soon be a licensed acquisition that users have been waiting more than a year for.
Typically on Netflix, the most recent season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been added between January and March.
However, the eighth and final season of the sitcom, which aired in the US in 2021, never arrived in 2022.
This was most likely due to the fact that the show’s network, NBC, had exclusive rights to feature the series on its specialised streaming service, Peacock.
Fortunately, enough time has passed for the 10-episode final season to be added to Netflix. It will arrive on 20 April.

Brett Goldstein has recalled the early years of his career when casting directors would typecast him “terrorist” roles.
Before the 42-year-old British actor found his breakthrough success starring as team curmudgeon Roy Kent on Apple TV’s heartwarming sports comedy Ted Lasso, he spent years trying to pursue dramatic roles.
Speaking to Variety, Goldstein explained: “All I would ever get audition offers for was terrorists. I guess they see my headshot and go, ‘Well, he looks like a terrorist!’”
It wasn’t until later when he finally realised he wasn’t having a “good time” in dramatic acting, that he said he finally gave in to his secret passion for standup.
“I f***ing stormed it,” he remembered of his first standup performance. “The adrenaline was so powerful that I had a great gig, and I was like, ‘Wow! F***!’”

Millie Bobby Brown’s Stranger Things co-stars were among the first to congratulate the actor after the 19-year-old hinted at her engagement to Jake Bongiovi.
On Tuesday (11 April), Brown shared a black-and-white photograph with Bongiovi, 20, who is the son of rock singer Jon Bon Jovi, wearing what appears to be an engagement ring on her left hand.
She captioned the post with lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song “Lover”.
“I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ‘em all,” she wrote, adding a love-heart emoji.
An excited Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers in Stranger Things opposite Brown’s Eleven, wrote: “Oh My God Congrats.”
The pair are close friends in real life, with Schnapp calling Brown his “partner in crime for life” on her 19th birthday.

The creator of Maternal has addressed its untimely cancellation by ITV.
It was revealed earlier this month that the channel would not commission a second run of Maternal.
Maternal, starring Parminder Nagra, Lara Pulver and Lisa McGrillis, followed three doctors who return to work in a post-Covid landscape after their maternity leave ends.
The drama began in January 2023, but sadly, for fans of the show, not enough viewers tuned in to warrant a second run.
On Tuesday (11 April), creator Jacqui Honess-Martin posted a broken-heart emoji on Twitter, writing: “We had a lot more to say.”
Explaining the reasoning behind ITV’s decision, the writer continued: “The show needed a high number of viewers for @ITV to sell advertising to break even. Maternal didn’t get that number.
“It hurts that it ends here but I am incredibly proud of the show, grateful and a bit amazed that we got to do it at all.

Anya Taylor-Joy has credited her Super Mario Bros Movie co-star Jack Black with her bilingual abilities.
The actor was born in Florida while her parents were on holiday, but was raised in Argentina until the age of six when her family relocated to London.
Taylor-Joy went viral this week after conducting an interview in fluent Spanish; many of her fans assumed the actor was English.
While discussing her role as Princess Peach in the newly released Super Mario Bros Movie with Buzzfeed, the 26-year-old said she was “super starstruck” meeting Black (who plays Bowser in the film) due to her love of School of Rock.
“At the school I went to, when I first moved to London, they would play School of Rock every Friday,” she told the outlet.
“At that time, I didn’t really speak much English, if any, so that and Harry Potter and Jumanji are like how I learned English.

Pedro Pascal has become a household name in Hollywood, but in the early years of his career, he went by another moniker.
Years before the Chilean-American actor, whose latest roles in HBO’s hugely successful apocalyptic series The Last of Us and the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian shot him to worldwide fame, he was booking small TV roles under his birth name, Pedro Balmaceda.
It was after the sudden death of his mother by suicide in 2000 – when he was 24 years old – that he decided to go by her maiden name Pascal professionally, to honour her, revealed the now 48-year-old actor in a new interview with Esquire.
“And also, because Americans had such a hard time pronouncing Balmaceda,” he said in an earlier interview with Variety. “It was exhausting.”

The news was announced by her agency Management S team, who shared a statement with Korean press on Tuesday (11 April).

She was set to appear in the TV series Wedding Impossible, which has halted production in light of the news.

The first trailer for the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film The Marvels has been released online.
A sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, the film also stars Samuel L Jackson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris.
However, while Marvel fans have praised the trailer itself, the footage also confirmed what many had already suspected: there’s going to be a lot of homework to do.
In the trailer, Carol Danvers (Larson) and Nic Cage (Jackson) can be seen interacting with Kamala Khan (Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Parris).
However, while Larson and Jackson both starred in the original Captain Marvel (and elsewhere in the MCU), Vellani and Parris have never appeared in any MCU films.
Rather, Parris’s character was introduced in the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision, playing a supporting role opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. The series covered her character’s backstory, and explained the origins of her powers.

The writers of Succession used an amusing secret code to keep the big twist in the latest episode under wraps.
Spoilers follow for Succession season four, episode three – you have been warned!
The episode, which debuted on HBO in the US on Sunday night (9 April) – and on Monday on Sky and Now in the UK – shocked viewers when its central character, the twisted media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox), was suddenly killed off.
On Twitter, writer Georgia Pritchett revealed that the writer’s room was tasked with keeping the death a secret after the plotline was first agreed upon in January 2022.
As a means of disguising the twist, they would substitute the phrase “Logan dies” with the words “Larry David”.
David, the co-creator of Seinfeld, is a figure often associated with HBO, thanks to his long-running sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm.

On 1 January, the Marvel star was rushed to hospital after being crushed by a large Snowcat plough outside his home in Nevada. Renner had been attempting to save his nephew from being hit by the vehicle, which weighed 14,000 pounds (6350kg).
Renner sustained blunt chest trauma and broke more than 30 bones in the accident. Other serious injuries included a collapsed lung and his liver being pierced by a shattered rib.
The 52-year-old stayed in two hospitals during his treatment, including one initial week at the first ICU.
However, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday (10 April), Renner explained that he’d been “kicked out” of the first ICU, which was in the process of being “under construction”.

Adil Ray has criticised Laurence Fox after the Lewis star compared insults aimed at him as an actor to Ray’s own experiences of racism.
On Sunday (10 April), the Good Morning Britain host – who has been vocal about past experiences in which he was the target of racism – responded to a news story about Essex police seizing racially offensive dolls from a pub.
The dolls, traditionally known as “golli***s”, feature a racist caricature of Black people.
Writing on Twitter, Ray commented: “I was called golliw*** at school. Just hearing the word frightens me. I can’t think of any good reason why someone on balance might think it’s ok to display them in a pub.”
In response, Fox tweeted: “Stay strong bro. I feel your pain. [Theatre critic] Quentin Letts described me as having a face that belonged in the winners enclosure at Aintree in a theatre review once, which,...

Bruno Tonioli has praised David Walliams for reaching out with a “class” response after he joined the panel of Britain’s Got Talent.
The former Strictly Come Dancing judge will appear alongside Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell on the judging panel for the new series of the talent competition, which returns this week.
Tonioli replaces Little Britain star Walliams, whose departure was announced in January. Months earlier, Walliams had come under fire after a leaked set recording from 2020 heard the actor and author making sexually explicit comments about a Bgt contestant.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Tonioli said that Walliams had been the first person to congratulate him for joining the show.
“I haven’t seen David, but he was the first person to send me a message saying congratulations,” the Italian choreographer said.
“He also sent a fantastic bottle of Italian wine to my dressing room on my first day.

Veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby has turned down the chance to play a role in the BBC’s coverage of the King’s coronation, according to reports.
The BBC’s coverage of the 6 May event will be led by Kirsty Young, 54, in a studio outside Buckingham Palace, with Huw Edwards, 61, and Clare Balding, 52, providing commentary.
Dimbleby, 84, was offered a role in the coverage, according to a report in The Times, but opted against playing “second fiddle” in the presenting lineup.
The Independent has contacted Dimbleby’s representatives for comment.
It is not clear what exactly Dimbleby’s role would have entailed, but it signals a shift from tradition: his father Richard covered the funeral of George VI in 1952 and Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation the following year.
Dimbleby himself has been a prominent figure in the BBC’s royal coverage for many years and he came out of retirement last September...

Vic Reeves has admitted that he “never really speaks” to comedy partner Bob Mortimer.
The pair met in 1986, forming their comedy double act Vic and Bob, best known for their wacky panel show Shooting Stars.
However, in a new interview with the Radio Times, Reeves – whose real name is Jim Moir – admitted that he and Mortimer are rarely in contact.
“We never really speak much. Bob and I have never been ones for talking on the phone,” he said.
“[I’ll] see him now and then and have a chat about things.”
In recent years, Reeves has focused on painting, releasing his artwork under his real name.
However, he has often noted the link between art and comedy, saying that art, to him, is “just for laughs”.
“I’ve done straight drawings and paintings and things and I haven’t got as much pleasure out of them as if I’d done...

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?
Take a look at these similarly delightful TV shows, including plenty featuring previous Taskmaster series alumni:
Man Down (Channel 4)
Starring the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, this Channel 4 sitcom centres on his character Dan, a frankly terrible schoolteacher who is having an infinitely amusing midlife crisis. As you can see from the clip above, it’ll please fans of Davies’ scathing takedowns,...

At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.
And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.
The question is: does a special outfit give contestants special powers? The edge over the competition, even? Let’s crunch the numbers.
Tim Key: 1980s-style tracksuit and headband over a shirt and tie (Series 1) Series rank: fourth
Okay, so we’re off to a bad start.

Russell Brand claims he’s been “censored” by YouTube for making a “relatively small error” on the platform.
After having a video removed from the video streaming service, Brand has now swapped to alternative platform Rumble, which he claims will enable him to talk more “freely”.

“They took down one of our videos for misinformation, but why are big media organisations not censored for misinformation in the same way? Is it because YouTube are part of the mainstream media now?”
He said YouTube originally removed his video because it “cited information on official government websites, which we misinterpreted”.
However, Brand claims that he uploaded an apology video for the “error” made, which he has now deleted to mirror YouTube’s decision and avoid risk of accidentally making the claim again.

Farmhouse Fixer presenter and ex-New Kids on the Block singer Jonathan Knight has responded after fans spotted something strange in one of the homes he was working on.
Farmhouse Fixer is a TV show in which Knight restores old homes with the help of designer Kristina Crestin.
The show’s recent episode, which aired last night (28 September) on HGTV, showed Knight and Crestin visiting Salem to restore a traditional 1950s barn connected with the Salem Witch Trails.
Salem’s historic Witch Trails saw the murder of 19 innocent people accused of practicising Witchcraft between 1692 and 1693.
Over 200 were arrested in the trials and it has since been recognised as one of the most prominent cases of hysteria, and the dangers of such.
Since the episode aired, viewers have spotted a strange figure in the window of the barn they were working on.
“Anyone else notice the ‘girl’ in the upstairs window of the Salem house?...

Strictly Come Dancing’s Giovanni Pernice has shut down rumours of a rift with his celebrity partner Richie Anderson.
The Italian dancer and reigning Strictly champion hit the dance floor with the BBC Radio 2 presenter for the first time on Saturday (24 September). You can find out more about Anderson here.
The couple performed a lively Cha Cha Cha to “I’m Your Man” by Wham!, but subsequent tabloid reports had claimed that Pernice was growing “frustrated” with Anderson “talking instead of listening” during rehearsals.
Appearing on Strictly’s sister programme It Takes Two on Wednesday (28 September), Pernice was asked by host Janette Manrara how they were enjoying rehearsals.
“We’re having a good time, we’re definitely having a good time,” Pernice said. “Obviously, it’s a dance competition at the end of the day, so we have to learn something.”
“But there is no-” he continued, before looking down the lens of the camera,...

Now, Julie Wilson Nimmo, who played Miss Hoolie, and Juliet Cadzow, who played Edie McCredie, have spoken about their hopes for a show reunion.
“It’s weird when you think about it, because different bands get back together, and I was saying the other day, we were kind of like a band, our gang could get back together,” Nimmo told BBC Radio Wm.
“You see The Rolling Stones doing it, so you think, why not?” she continued, before asking Cadzow: “I’d be up for it. Would you Juliet?”
“Definitely, absolutely, I could slide down that pole again, no bother!” said Cadzow, referencing...

Speaking at a BBC factual launch on Wednesday (28 September), the corporation’s director of unscripted programming Kate Phillips said that she hoped the BBC would be able to “to bring audiences together” with content that is “very British at its heart”.
This includes a new David Attenborough series set in the UK.
There will also be a week of programming specifically addressing the cost of living crisis, including shows such as Morning Live, The One Show and Stacy Solomon’s Sort Your Life Out.
“It’s about showing people we’re in tough times but also giving them tips and trying to help them navigate it… what can we do as the BBC to help [everyone] through a very challenging time ahead,” Phillips said.

BIlly Joel fans in the UK will be overjoyed to learn the musician will make his live return in 2023.
The singer-songwriter of songs including “Piano Man”, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Uptown Girl” has not played in the UK since June 2018.
These days, Joel almost exclusively plays in the US, but has decided to play in London to mark the 10th anniversary of BST Hyde Park.
Joel’s performance on 7 July will serve as his only European date. It arrives one day before friend and collaborator Bruce Springsteen plays with the E Street Band, which will no doubt leave revellers expecting some form of duet.
The announcement comes shortly before the release of Billy Joel: Live At The Yankee Stadium, a film made to celebrate the musician’s 50 years in the business.
Joel, 73, won his first two Grammy awards at the 21st annual awards ceremony for track “Just...

The Inbetweeners star James Buckley is continuing to take Cameo by storm in the UK.
The comedy actor joined the video platform in March 2020, where he swiftly gained popularity for his willingness to send personalised videos quoting his famous catchphrases from the sitcom.
Buckley, who played Jay Cartwright on the Channel 4 show, regularly responds to requests for clips, with reports in 2021 revealing that he was responding to as many as 37 requests a day.
At the time, company co-founder Martin Blencowe said that actor “takes it very seriously”, adding: “He’s ready to do the work.”
It seems this has paid off following reports that Buckley has now become the first non-us celebrity to make 1m from the platform.
Confirming the report, Blencowe commented on why Buckley continues to be so successful on the app.
“James was incredibly popular from the start, but he’s stayed committed to his fans,...
