The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

As we start gearing up for the Holiday Shopping Season, there are a new batch of home media releases arriving this week, and a few of those titles might feel right at home on your wish list this year. Heathers, a personal favorite of mine is getting the Steelbook treatment this Tuesday, courtesy of Rlje Films, and in terms of recent horror releases, both 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Bliss are both hitting Blu-ray and DVD as well.
Scream Factory is showing some love to Stacey Keach and Road Games (1981) this week, and for those of you who enjoy your sibling survival stories with a bit of a nasty twist to them, Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Flowers in the Attic.
Other Blu and DVD films coming home on November 12th include Wicked World, The Attic, Polaroid, Darkslide, Small Town Killers, and Southern Chillers.

Prince Jackson inherited his father's spirit. In a live interview with Good Morning America's Robin Roberts Monday, Prince explained how he's keeping his late father Michael Jackson's legacy alive while also making a name for himself. "I'm not a fan of having my private or personal life being out there," the 20-year-old said at the top of his interview with Robin, "but I understand the importance of showing what I do and hopefully trying to inspire others to continue spreading the good and helping the community." Prince first discussed Heal L.A., an organization he and John Muto co-founded at Loyola Marymount University. "We primarily focus on child abuse, homelessness and...

In case you were trying to decide what to ask God when you die and are offered the answers to all the secrets of the universe, don't ask him/her/it about Home Alone. I mean, ask him if you really want to, but Slate's interview with Home Alone production designer John Muto pretty much has you covered. Muto, who might as well be an honest-to-God human wizard, talks about the nonlethal stunts he and his team devised for the film's half-hour climactic booby-trap scene. Setting. Fire. To. A. Mannequin. When is the solution to any dilemma "setting fire to a mannequin"? How could we have known? While bad guys Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern were completely out of harm's way during filming, the same could not be said for their stunt doubles Troy Brown and Leon Delaney. Oh, and yes, Buzz's tarantula really did walk around on Daniel Sterns' horrified face.

Arrow Video is excited to announce the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Night of the Comet, the 80s cult-classic which since its initial release in 1984, has gone on to amass a legion of loyal fans with its hugely entertaining riff on the apocalyptic sub-genre of movies, paying homage to such classics as The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth. In fact, this might be the most purely entertaining depiction of the aftermath of a catastrophic event, not just in movie history but possibly... well, ever. The movie will make its UK Blu-ray debut on 22nd September 2014 in a newly restored transfer with a host of extra features including interviews with stars Kelli Maroney, Catherine Mary Stewart, Robert Beltran and Mary Woronov. The disc will also feature audio commentaries with writer/director Thom Eberhardt, stars Kelli Maroney and Catherine Mary Stewart and production designer John Muto. Alongside this,...

"This movie has been written about in books — go figure — and there's discussion about whether or not it's actually a zombie movie. And I can tell you it's not; it's not a zombie movie." So says director Thom Eberhardt about 20 minutes into the commentary for his low-budget 1984 movie Night of the Comet, which Shout! Factory is releasing in a DVD/Blu-ray edition this week. There's ample evidence contradicting Eberhardt's "not a zombie movie" claim, not the least of which is that, on the other two commentary tracks, stars Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney as well as production designer John Muto independently confirm that when they first saw the script, it was titled...

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.

Over the weekend, San Diego Comic-Con announced the programming schedule for Saturday and Sunday at this year's convention. Usually, Saturday is the most impressive day as it's the weekend and has the biggest amount of people coming into the area while Sunday is usually the most unexciting day as it's the final day of the event and everything is winding down. For 2011, each day is going in the opposite direction. Saturday's movie programming is very underwhelming, save for a few films like Snow White and the Huntsman and Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, with more cool TV panels popping up than usual. Sunday is significantly better than usual, especially if you like TV, with Hall H panels on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Glee and more. Read about the highlights, with commentary and more after the jump. To be fair, most of these complaints stem from the fact that the...

HollywoodNews.com: The Art Directors Guild (Adg) Film Society and American Cinematheque will honor Production Designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai with a screening of the film “Devdas” (2002) on Sunday, August 29, at 5:30 pm at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood). Sponsored by Variety, this film is the fourth of this year’s screening series highlighting the work of renowned Production Designers and their creative colleagues. A panel discussion moderated by Production Designer John Muto will follow.
“Devdas,” based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novella of the same name, was the most expensive Bollywood film ever produced at the time of its release, and remains one of the most opulent Indian films ever. Filmed many times, “Devdas,” an Indian-style retelling of “Romeo and Juliet,” is considered a national treasure. The film features superstars Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit and is renowned for its elaborate palace sets, covering acres of backlot surrounding a reflecting lake.

So you just saw Zombieland and you're desperately looking for another fun zombie-filled end of the world movie with strong female characters? Look no further than the brilliant '80s horror comedy Night Of The Comet!
When a comet passes over the earth, rendering everyone witnessing it into red dust, the only survivors are two Valley Girl sisters, responsible Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her little sister, spoiled cheerleader Samantha (Kelli Maroney).
The two girls wander Southern California, enjoying malls without crowds, driving fast through empty streets and even DeeJaying at an abandoned radio station (Samantha cheerfully announces she'll be taking requests "from all you teenage mutant comet zombies!"). In a funny commentary on boy/girl relations, when Regina and Samantha run into some teenage box boys, they plan to kill and eat the girls!
Night brings in a secret underground lab, a virus, and other apocalyptic motifs, but never...

Nathan Crowley, Production Designer for most all of Christopher Nolan's films, will be part of a special 'Production Designers' panel speaking at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Production Designers Panel - These craftspeople create the physical look for a movie or TV program, be it Star Wars or a talk show. Without the designer, the actors would be performing in empty space. Here a group of these artists at the top of their game talk about the challenges and pleasures of their craft, and answer audience questions. Panelists include Stuart Blatt (Dollhouse), Scott Chambliss (Star Wars), Nathan Crowley (The Dark Knight), and Alex McDowell (Watchmen). Moderating the panel is John Muto (Terminator 2 3D). Friday July 24th from 4:30-5:30 in Room 30Ab.Crowley is reportedly not working on Inception, which will make it the first time since Insomnia that he hasn't worked on one of Nolan's films.
