Fast growing, London-based VFX and animation studio group Cinesite said today it’s clinched a 235 million funding package as it continues to expand.
The firm’s longtime bankers NatWest and Barclay’s led the financing — a package of transactions that includes, debt, equity and mezzanine lines from existing shareholders.
Cinesite will use the fresh funds “to accelerate its growth by offering clients greater creative capacity, allowing the company to enter new geographies and business segments while building on its studio partnership model to expand its talent base & global footprint.”
Outside of London, Cinesite has facilities in Montreal and Vancouver and alongside partner studios in Berlin, Munich (Trixter), Belgrade, Skopje (FX3X), Montreal (Squeeze Animation & L’Atelier Animation), Quebec City (Squeeze), Mumbai (Assemblage Entertainment) and Vancouver (Image Engine), enabling it to scale to thousands of VFX & animation artists worldwide.
The deal with Assemblage was announced last month, marking Cinesite’s first foray into Asia.

The Juan José Millás novel is being turned into a psychological thriller by the Spanish filmmaker; the cast includes Leonor Watling, Paco León and Álex Brendemühl. The director behind half of the episodes of the series Patria (read the review), Félix Viscarret, currently finds himself in his home town of Pamplona, engrossed (as he has been for the last few weeks) in making the film From the Shadows, a big-screen adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Juan José Millás. Leonor Watling, Paco León, Álex Brendemühl, Juan Diego Botto, María Romanillos, Marcos Ruiz and Susana Abaitua will topline the feature. With a screenplay penned by the director together with David Muñoz (La estrategia del pequinés), the film revolves around Damián, who, in order to run away from his boss when he fires him after many long years of service in his company, hides in an...
In a powerful Spanish talent package, “Patria” director Felix Viscarret is set to direct “House of Flowers” Paco Leon and “Nasdrovia” star Leonor Watling in psychological thriller “From the Shadows” (“Desde la Sombra”), adapting a novel by Spanish writer Juan José Millas, winner of most of Spain’s foremost literary awards, including the Planeta, Nadal and National Narrative Awards.
A star of sitcom “Aida,” a free-to-air TV phenomenon over 2005-14, and more latterly Netflix Mexico hit “House of Flowers,” Leon co-wrote and directed “Arde Madrid,” a Movistar Plus Rose d’Or winning original series. Star of Pedro Almodovar’s Academy Award winning “Talk to Her,” Watling confirmed her comic talents most recently in Movistar Plus’ excruciatingly discomforting Russian mob comedy “Nasdrovia.”

Earning double points in the poor taste stakes of shameless self-promotion, straight-to-video horror mess Exorcismus – written by David Muñoz, a financial advisor by trade, who occasionally dabbles in film – has been sold not only on the basis that it is from Filmax, the studio behind the brilliant [Rec] films, but also that it “stars” Doug Bradley, better known to horror aficionados as Hellraiser’s iconic ghoul Pinhead. That the film shares practically no DNA with either [Rec] film (aside from also having a Spanish director), and that Bradley’s “starring role” actually consists of a two-minute cameo near the end, is quite the indication of quite how feverishly the film’s marketers had to scrape the bottom of the barrel in order to drum up some fuss about this ghastly horror pic.
Socially awkward, home-schooled teenager Emma (Sophie Vavasseur) one day begins to suffer from convulsions and act out in ways that she has no memory of.

Fifteen year-old Emma is a normal moody teenager, drinking, making-out with boys, baby-sitting her younger brother and ranting and raving when she doesn’t get her way. Just when you thought The Last Exorcism would be the final word on the current crop of exorcist films, think again. We’ve got two other titles coming up next month in the demonic form of The Rite and a low budget Spanish production set in England, with the gloriously B-movie title, Exorcismus. Even the poster is a knock-off from Eli Roth and Daniel Stamm’s shock-moc-doc. God bless exploitation cinema.
Exorcismus stars Hellraiser icon Doug Bradley as, guess what?, a priest! He’s got to save the life of a young girl (yawn) when psychological problems could indicate something much more sinister. Bet she suddenly develops a penchant for vulgarity, slagging off Christianity and speaking Latin despite never having studied it.

On Monday, October 5, shooting commenced on Exorcismus, the latest fear film to come out of Spain’s Filmax studios. As with so many Spanish genre productions of the last decade, this one is also directed by a relative newcomer to feature filmmaking, Manuel Carballo (taking over for originally slated Luis de la Madrid). And in common with most of the company's previous horror movies (such as Arachnid, Dagon, Darkness, The MacHinist and Beyond Re-animator), the movie is being filmed with a multinational cast in English, on locations in and around the city of Barcelona.
The cast includes Resident Evil: Apocalypse’s Sophie Vavasseur (pictured), Richard Felix from Filmax’s Fragile, which still has yet to see U.S. release, Hellraiser stalwart Doug Bradley and the first Resident’s Stephen Billington. The movie has already been presold to a dozen countries, including Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Poland, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Most...

Have you ever seen the Spanish short film HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU? If you haven't, try and find a way to see it, because it's absolutely extraordinary. After playing dozens of festivals, director David Alcalde is finally set to make his directorial debut here in the States with a remake to the '70s Spanish horror flick, WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? Co-written by Alcalde and David Muñoz, IN THE PLAYGROUND will follow a vacationing couple arrive on an island where the native children have gone crazy and are murdering adults. Sometimes it is just a better idea to stay on the mainland. If you're new to a certain area, don't go gallivanting off with your spouse to some mysterious island or cornfield where adults are strangely absent. It never bodes well.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that David Alcalde, director of the short "Happy Birthday to You", will be at the helm of the remake of Narciso Ibáñez Serrador's disturbing Who Can Kill a Child? (review). This info also appears on IMDB with Alcalde getting screenplay credit with David Muñoz. The title, which could change, is listed as In the Playground. It isn't really as snappy, eh?
The original film was based off a novel by Juan José Plans, but it changed around a few things and omitted the cause of the children's madness all together. Does this mean Mr. Alcalde and crew may try to make a more faithful adaptation?...
