An extremely engaging film showcased at this year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival, The Independents, a character drama with music, deserves to find an audience beyond the festival circuit. Greg Naughton, the writer-director and also one of the movie’s three stars, has an impressive musical theater pedigree. His father, actor James Naughton, is a two-time Tony winner, and his wife, Kelli O’Hara, is also a Tony winner. O’Hara and the elder Naughton have cameo roles in the film, but the movie really depends on the three leading actors—Rich Price and Brian Chartrand in addition to Greg Naughton—who form a folk rock...

Despite the devastating mudslides that overwhelmed the Santa Barbara, California community of Montecito last week — resulting in at least 20 deaths and the destruction of 100-plus homes — the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) will go on as usual. A reason to celebrate is “needed now more than ever,” wrote Sbiff director Roger Durling in a letter soon to be shared with festival-goers. He continued, “It is an opportunity for people to gather – reflect – experience – feel – and process,” noting that cinema attendance was strong during the Great Depression.
Launched in 1986, this year’s Sbiff will include films from 58 countries. Numbered among its 45 world premieres is opening night film “the public,” the first feature written and directed by Emilio Estevez since 2010’s “The Way.” Set at a Cincinnati public library, the film follows its homeless and marginalized patrons during a dangerous cold spell. The cast includes Alec Baldwin, Jena Malone (“Neon Demon...

The cockeyed optimist portrayed by Kelli O'Hara in her starring role as Nellie Forbush in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific doesn't seem to be entirely an act. O'Hara, an Oklahoma native who is expecting her first child this summer with her husband, singer Greg Naughton, waxed rhapsodic recently about her pregnancy and how it has changed her voice and made her a better performer. Interviewed before singing at the New York Philharmonic's spring gala at Avery Fisher Hall in New York, O'Hara said her pregnancy had "opened up my high voice, it's changed my tessitura, my breaking point. It has made it higher. So a lot of my stuff, especially South Pacific, became very difficult for me to sing, so I had to rethink it, but I did." O'Hara, who had a cabaret show last month at Manhattan's...
