Some of Off-Broadway’s best recent productions will soon be viewable from the comfort of your living room. PBS Thirteen is premiering an exciting new television series titled “Theater Close-Up” on Oct. 2 at 9 P.M. New York theater fans who may have missed some of the most talked-about plays of the last year can tune in to see carefully filmed versions of John Van Druten’s “London Wall,” Richard Nelson’s quartet of dramas “The Apple Family Plays,” Hamish Linklater’s “The Vandal,” Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson’s “An Iliad,” Brian Richard Mori’s “Hellman v. McCarthy,” and Steven Banks’ “Looking at Christmas.” In addition to receiving widespread critical acclaim, these shows are for the most part intimate, family-oriented dramas that enable PBS to continue a tradition of bringing live work to a wider public audience. Wnet-13, New York’s Public Broadcasting Service station, will air weekly installments on Thursdays at 9 p.

The Drama Desk announced nominations this morning for the 59th edition of its awards ceremony, which will take place June 1 at The Town Hall in NYC. The group, which includes writers, editors, academics and others, can take credit for its refusal to segregate Broadway from its off- and off-off- siblings, and therefore reflects a wider range of choices (and quality) than the Theater District-only Tonys. (The nominations also guarantee the group a high-profile in display advertisement in the run-up to the Tony Awards.) And so, for example, the competition for Best Musical includes not only Broadway’s Rocky, Aladdin, The Bridges Of Madison County, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder but also the Public Theater’s well-received productions of Fun Home and Love’s Labour’s Lost. Best Play nominees include Broadway’s Outside Mullingar and All The Way as well as five plays presented off-Broadway.

The American theater suffers from a serious case of Chekhov envy. Dead almost 100 years, the great Russian has his fingerprints on nearly every wistful drama now produced. I’m not complaining; at least it’s not Strindberg. But Chekhov is easier to ape than to assimilate. His unhurried, sideways approach to the kill is too often mistaken for gentleness, a substitution that turns tension to mush and lets the quarry escape. So Richard Nelson tempts fate in setting his wistful drama Nikolai and the Others, a Lincoln Center Theater production, among a bunch of sentimental Russians in a country house over a spring weekend. References to The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya, and, most overtly, The Seagull abound. The set is sun-dappled and wicker-filled. In the play’s first moment, a woman named Vera picks up her embroidery and says, “Nikolai Dimitrievich, I told Natasha you were here.” Can the samovar be far behind?...

Chicago – Franklin Delano Roosevelt – father of the New Deal, leader through the Depression, war president – and according to the new film “Hyde Park on the Hudson,” he’s horny, baby. Bill Murray portrays Fdr, with support from Laura Linney, Samuel West and Olivia Williams.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
This angle on history – that Fdr had multiple mistresses and collected them like stamps – is probably the least interesting and most salacious aspect of the man. That part of him simply isn’t compelling, so the film meanders through the soap opera-type liaisons with a low energy, as if the production itself knows that they’re peddling some sleaze. There are some terrific performances in the film, including Samuel West as England’s King George VI (portraying Bertie from last year’s “The King’s Speech”) and Olivia Colman as his wife Elizabeth, but the usually memorable Laura Linney is reduced to tentative wallpaper as Daisy,...

Bill Murray has joked that playing ex-us President Franklin D Roosevelt was far more intimidating than many of his previous roles. The actor explained to Flicks and Bits that playing such a legendary historical figure came with tremendous responsibility. "It's not like Dr Peter Venkman of the Ghostbusters, his history was pretty much a thumbnail sketch. But the history of these people, the Roosevelts, it's deep and well documented," Murray said. The star further commented: "There's a lot to swallow and a lot to digest. You have a lot of responsibility so you feel like you've got to get as much of a picture of them as you can. Roosevelt is the most formidable character I've ever been asked to play, and this story that I hadn't known about showed his personal side. "There was a humanity to Richard Nelson's script. (more)...

Two Sandys dominated the New York theater scene this week. One was the canine star of the beloved musical Annie, which opened Thursday night to generally mixed reviews (despite a near rave from EW’s Jessica Shaw). The other was the hurricane that disrupted numerous productions last week. The storm even became the unlikely scapegoat for the producers of the Al Pacino-led revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, which pushed back its opening date from Nov. 11 to Dec. 8 despite being in previews since Oct. 9 and canceling only a handful of performances due to Sandy. Here’s our take on recent openings:...

While both Daniel Day Lewis and Benjamin Walker will portray Abraham Lincoln this year, Bill Murray as usual is going down his own distinct path playing a different president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt in "Hyde Park On Hudson." And this writer is anticipating it more than either "Lincoln" or "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and Focus Features has dropped a few new images to tease the film.
Directed by Roger Michell ("Morning Glory," "Notting Hill") and written by Richard Nelson—who adapted his own 2009 radio play—the story focuses on a rather curious moment in Fdr’s life. The movie is set over a weekend in 1939 when Brit royalty visits his upstate New York home for the weekend, and will shed light on his affair with his cousin Margaret Stuckley. Olivia Williams plays Fdr's wife, Eleanor, with Laura Linney as Margaret while British actors Samuel West and Olivia Colman will portray King George and Queen Elizabeth.

One of the better aspects of Rushmore – and that’s truly saying something - is the chemistry that Bill Murray and Olivia Williams exuded onscreen together. While it’s a shame that they haven’t worked together since, it looks like that could change soon. That’s because Deadline reports that she’s the front runner to take on the role of Eleanor Roosevelt in the upcoming Hyde Park on the Hudson, which has Murray as Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Olivia Williams is closing in on the role of Eleanor Roosevelt, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wife, in the upcoming film, Hyde Park on the Hudson, Deadline report.
The film will be directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Morning Glory), and already has Bill Murray and Laura Linney attached. Murray is to play Fdr, and Linney will play his distant cousin and lover, Margaret Suckley.
Fdr was the only American president to be elected to office for more than two terms, being elected four consecutive times, from 1933 through to his death in 1945, which cut his fourth term short, when Vice President Harry Truman was then sworn in.
It is to be written by newcomer Richard Nelson, and revolves around a weekend in 1939 when King George VI and his wife, the Queen Mother, visited Fdr’s private retreat, Top Cottage, in New York near the Hudson River, when (in the film...

In Wes Anderson's Rushmore, Olivia Williams and Bill Murray made for quite the interesting couple: she played a widow still in love with her ex-husband, while he was a miserable married man having an affair. It was an odd pairing to say the least, but it will probably only be weirder when they are playing the 32nd President of the United States and the First Lady. Deadline reports that Williams is now the most likely candidate to play Eleanor Roosevelt in Hyde Park on the Hudson. Directed by Roger Mitchell and written by Richard Nelson, the is set in 1939 when King George VI decides to visit the President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Murray) and his wife in their home in Upstate New York, known as Hyde Park. Dealing with the run-up to World War II, things are only made more complicated when Eleanor discovers that Franklin has been having an...

Franklin Roosevelt was one of the greatest American leaders of the 20th century. Bill Murray, the guy who’s portraying him isn’t too bad, either. And Olivia Williams, a British thesp who entered into the scene with a leading role in Kevin Costner’s The Postman, is the frontrunner to play Fdr’s wife Eleanor Roosevelt in Roger Michell’s Hyde Park on the Hudson.
Richard Nelson reworked his own 2009 radio play which centers on a rather intriguing moment in Fdr’s life. Set over a long weekend in 1939 when Roosevelt invited the British King and Queen at his upstate New York cottage. The feature will shed some light on both his presidency and the fact that he may have been more intimate with his cousin, Margaret Stuckley than usual.

What else can we say about the lovely and talented Olivia Williams except that she's consistently great in pretty much anything she's in. Most American audiences became familiar with her she when she starred in Wes Anderson's sophomore effort "Rushmore" and it looks like a reunion of sorts with another cast member is in the works. Deadline reports that Williams is the frontrunner to join Bill Murray in "Hyde Park On Hudson." Written by Richard Nelson—who adapted his own 2009 radio play—the story focuses on a rather curious moment in Fdr’s life. The movie is set over a weekend in…...

The Franklin D. Roosevelt biopic Hyde Park on the Hudson already made an unexpected choice by casting Bill Murray as the United States’ 32nd President, but the next addition is someone you’d expect to appear in a movie like this. Deadline says that Laura Linney has joined the movie in the role of Margaret Suckley (or “Daisy”) who was Fdr’s sixth cousin and mistress.
Written by Richard Nelson – who’s adapting his own play – and directed by Roger Michell, the movie focuses on the relationship that the two of them had, and how it was uncovered when the Royal Family made a visit to Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park, New York before the start of World War II. The first time any members of the British monarchy were in America, it seems like great material for a film. That Royal Couple happened to be King George and Queen Elizabeth,...
