Yes, we’ve all lived before; when I come back I don’t care who I am as long as I’m in the 1%. When Michael Sarrazin reaches into a previous life his big sacrifice is to abandon the gorgeous Cornelia Sharpe for the gorgeous Jennifer O’Neill, arousing the suspicions of his wife in his previous life, gorgeous Margot Kidder. The show looks great, Jerry Goldsmith’s music is beautiful, but it runs up against real trouble in the script and directing departments.

The Warner Archive Collection is a manufacture-on-demand (Mod) DVD series that specializes in putting previously unreleased films on DVD for the first time. Recently they dug deep into their vast history of classic horror and selected some winners to resurrect.
The Warner Archive Collection can make a wide array of films available because they don't actually create the DVD until it is ordered by a customer. This way, they are not taking a chance of getting stuck with a large amount of inventory if a selected title doesn't sell. You'll certainly recognize some of the horror films the Warner Archive Collection has added to its library, but there are a couple of really obscure ones in there as well. Take a look at the list of what's been made available and plan your shopping list now.

Chicago – Just as Peter Jackson’s adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” suffered from visual over-saturation, writer/producer Guillermo del Toro’s remake of John Newland’s 1973 TV movie succumbs to ineffectual excess. As soon as its fearsome creatures appear for longer than a flash frame, they instantly lose their scare-factor. Didn’t del Toro and his crew learn anything from “Signs”?
Audiences have become so accustomed to the fluid movement of computer animation that it has lost its power to truly terrify. The fantastical beings in del Toro’s 2006 masterpiece, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” benefited from fusions of intricate costumes and nearly seamless digitalized details. It’s clear that the filmmaker is most skilled at making creature features, yet his unrestrained approach is all wrong for “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” which is a thriller that’s meant to play on the mind.

Director Troy Nixey’s creepy tale of creature dentistry has been announced for a January 3rd 2012 release date for both Blu-ray and DVD. The Guillermo Del Toro production features Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as a couple renovating an old house. Guy Pearce’s character’s daughter soon realizes that they are not the only residents in this house. It’s remake of the John Newland directed TV flick from 1973, and although it hints at more than it delivers it is still a quite enjoyable flick that relies on atmosphere. The DVD and Blu-ray will both contain three featurettes, with the Blu-ray featuring an additional extra. Full press release below.

Let’s ignore that the recent remake of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark starring Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes was sold to audiences almost entirely on the premise that it was “from” Guillermo Del Toro even though it felt nothing like a Del Toro film, because if you’ve ever seen the original 1973 film directed by John Newland, you know exactly why the film needs all the help it can get to attract an audience: it’s so poorly constructed that it never cashes in fully on the tension of its two main conflicts. There’s nothing worse than a horror film that takes a great idea and then squanders it by never actually making it tense or scary. It’s like a mission to the moon where Nasa builds the rocket, trains the astronauts, prepares for launch…and then everyone just leaves and goes home. We all...

Apparently, Guillermo del Toro has been itching to make this one for years. In his youth, John Newland’s 1973 haunted house tale became a by-word for ‘creepy’ between himself and friends. Having secured the rights to produce his own version of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) over a decade since, del Toro’s adaptation finally made its debut here the UK at this year’s Film4 FrightFest, directed by newcomer Troy Nixey.

John Newland's 1973 made-for-tv drama "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is widely considered a high water mark for feature-length broadcast productions. Ugly monster in Troy Nixey's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark A Prometheus alien? Wrong. Ralph Fiennes about to eat Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2? Nope. The face above belongs to one of the creatures found in the Guillermo del Toro-produced, Troy Nixey-directed Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. A remake of a 1973 made-for-television movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison. A horror drama about a shy young girl who discovers ghastly creatures living right in the basement of her new house, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark has a few elements in common with del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, e.g., little girls, big monsters, a fantastic "underworld." Probably not coincidentally, Nigel McKeand's teleplay was adapted by del Toro, working with Matthew Robbins. True Grit's Kim Darby and Where the Boys Are...

Troy Nixey helms the remake of the new Guillermo Del Toro presented horror feature 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'. The ghostly tale is based on the TV feature of the same name from way back in 1973 from director John Newland. Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce ('The Hurt Locker', 'The King's Speech'), Bailee Madison ('Wizards of Waverly Place'), Alan Dale ('Lost', 'Ugly Betty') and Julia Blake ('X-Men Origins: Wolverine') all star. Toro himself co-wrote the screenplay along with Matthew Robbins from the teleplay by Nigel McKeand. Check out the new poster as well as the creepy-ass trailer below....

The first trailer for 1973 horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark has landed on the Internet and its already enough to get us excited.
The original, also known as Nightmare in Europe, was a TV only movie that gave the 70’s generation a reason to fear the dark. It quickly picked up its own cult following and was one of TV director John Newland’s more successful projects.
The remake being made for Miramax Films is being produced by visionary filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and helmed by first time director Troy Nixey.
Troy landed the job after impressing studios and Del Toro with his short film Latchkey’s Lament back in 2007, which used a blend of CGI animation and live action to tell a tale of love and heroism. Its unique art style was almost certainly what brought it to Del Toro’s attention.

January 21, 2011. Make sure you write this date somewhere, especially if you’re a fan of some good horror-stories.
Why? Well, because that’s exactly the release date of the 1973 TV movie remake Don’t be afraid of the Dark, project directed by newcomer Troy Nixey, and produced by well-known name Guillermo del Toro.
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark will center on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.
In case you’re not so familiar with the cast, Guy Pearce will star as above mentioned father, together with his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes, while “young girl” will be played by Bailee Madison.
Like we said, ABC’s 1973 cult classic will mark former comic book artist Troy Nixey’s directorial debut.

Anthology series are always a hit or miss. They usually depend on the producer’s ability to ensure a steady quality from one unrelated episode to another. The Twilight Zone has proved to be one of the best and most enduring in doing so, while One Step Beyond stays relatively obscure, even though they’re practically identical in format, with host John Newland stepping in to bookend each episode with soliloquies not unlike Rod Serling’s. He even opens with a kindred mantra:
"What you are about to see is a matter of human record. Explain it, we cannot. Disprove it, we cannot. We simply invite you to explore with us the amazing world of the unknown. To take that One Step Beyond."
The catch is, it made its on-air debut 10 months before The Twilight Zone.

Now that Jay Leno will be taking over the 10 p.m. slot from Monday to Friday (starting Sept. 14) on the Peacock network, viewers will get four hours of people sitting behind desks and talking directly to the camera.
Can the average viewer really handle going from Leno to local news to Conan O’Brien to Jimmy Fallon to Carson Daly? How many guys in suits and ties sitting behind a desk do you want to experience after an 8 hours of work day with guys in suits and ties sitting behind desks? They’re all going to stare at you through the boob tube and jibber jabber. Kinda like the doofus with the desk next to you at work.

From out of the blue Warner Bros. sent over three titles from their recently launched Warner Archive collection, a program the studio began back in March of 2009 allowing consumers to purchase and/or watch on demand several previously unreleased movies on DVD for the first time. I have not heard anything recently on the program's successes, but I know when it first launched it was a huge hit and the studio was actually surprised by the demand. Considering I have a limited knowledge when it comes to unreleased titles my excitement wasn't all that severe outside of an interest in purchasing Francis Ford Coppola's 1968 debut The Rain People (how about sending that one over Warner?). However, when films arrive unexpectedly I can't help but get look their way as my curiosity in the lesser seen films continues to rise in hopes of finding hidden gems outside the realms of the classics.

Miramax and Guillermo del Toro will together produce a remake of the horror film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark that first aired on TV in 1973. Comic book artist and writer Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut with the film. Del Toro himself and his writing partner Matthew Robbins (Mimic) will be adapting the screenplay for the remake. The original film was directed by John Newland and gained a cult following after its debut and on VHS. The story follows a young girl who is sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, only to discover that sinister creatures live underneath the stairs. If I remember correctly, this is movie that scared the crap out of me as a kid and here we are remaking it! Development on the film is only at the very early stages, as they haven't begun any research on the monsters.

Guillermo del Toro and Miramax will produce a remake of the horror-thriller telefilm "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," the specialty distributor's first big dive into genre filmmaking under president Daniel Battsek.
Comic book artist-writer Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut with the adaptation of ABC's 1973 cult classic. Del Toro is adapting Nigel McKeand's teleplay with Matthew Robbins, his writing partner on the 1997 horror film "Mimic" for Miramax's former genre label Dimension.
(Bob and Harvey Weinstein took the Dimension Films label and several genre projects with them when they left Walt Disney to form the Weinstein Co. in 2005)
"Dark" centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.
Michael Falbo, Miramax's director of production and development, will oversee the project for the studio under president of production Keri Putnam.
The film is in its early stages; research and development of the monsters hasn't begun yet, and other producers might come aboard. Moviegoers can expect an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth," with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.
Directed by John Newland, the original telefilm (known as "Nightmare" in Europe) gained a cult following through syndication and home video release.
Nixey wrote and directed the 2007 supernatural thriller short "Latchkey's Lament," a mix of CGI animation and live action. He has attained cult status for illustrating "Batman" and "Matrix" comics as well as writing and illustrating Dark Horse Comics' "Trout," which is in development at Phoenix Pictures.
"It has always been a dream of mine to work on a project with Guillermo, my favorite filmmaker," Nixey said. "I had no idea it would be on my first one out. Miramax's faith in me is everything a first-time director could ask for."
Nixey is one of several emerging filmmakers, including "Orphanage" helmer Juan Antonio Bayona, mentored by del Toro.
Peter McPartlin, vp business affairs and legal, negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax. Endeavor and Gary Ungar at Exile Entertainment, who rep del Toro and Nixey, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Robbins is repped by the Pitt Group.
