In a competitive situation, Vendôme Pictures, the Oscar-winning banner behind “Coda,” has optioned the film and television rights to John Vaillant’s nonfiction book about climate change “Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World.”
It comes after the book was released to much acclaim in June 2023 and went on to win the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. It was also a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award, and was named a best book of the year by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Financial Times and The Guardian, among many other prominent publications.
Vaillant took readers halfway through the hottest year of the hottest decade in recorded history, as a new kind of fire introduced itself to the world. The author examines the multi-billion-dollar disaster in Fort McMurray, the hub of Canada’s oil industry and America’s biggest foreign supplier, which melted vehicles, turned houses...

Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.
Ethan Hawke is better known as an actor than a director, with a prolific career that has included many collaborations with Richard Linklater – the sublime Before trilogy, Tape, The Newton Boys and Boyhood stand tall. Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. It has not been confirmed if Hawke will appear.
However, he has also steadily built up an impressive career behind the camera. Besides co-writing the last two Before films with Linklater and Julie Delpy, he has directed several documentaries and three feature films – Chelsea Walls in 1999, The Hottest State, adapted from his own novel in 2006, and...

Laura Harrier is ready to go to war with Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård for the Andrew Niccol-directed sequel Lords of War. Harrier will star opposite Cage and Skarsgård for a follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2005 thriller, Lord of War.
Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.” The details of Harrier’s role remain a mystery.
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the...

Exclusive: Laura Harrier (White Men Can’t Jump) has been tapped for a major role opposite Bill Skarsgård and Nicolas Cage in Lords of War, the sequel to 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which Andrew Niccol (Anon) wrote and is directing for Vendôme Pictures (Coda), sources tell Deadline.
Lords of War picks up the story of Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, watching as he discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs — he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s bitter rivalry — even at odds over the same woman. Who will prevail when father and son go to war?
Specifics as to Harrier’s part are under wraps.

Exclusive: Anna Faris (Mom) has joined the cast of I, Object, the newest feature from Oscar-nominated Gattaca filmmaker Andrew Niccol, first announced during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. She takes over the role of Melanie Lynskey, who departed due to scheduling conflicts.
Faris is now part of an ensemble that includes Karl Urban, Thomasin McKenzie, and Jemaine Clement, as previously announced.
A live-action/animation hybrid, I, Object centers on Tom, a 10-year-old grieving the loss of his father. Unable to relate to the people in his life, Tom takes refuge in the everyday objects around him. Pop can lids, suitcases and untold numbers of everyday objects reveal their true faces and speak to him, helping him on his healing journey.

Although Nicolas Cage has been known to star in just about any kind of project when attempting to pay off his now-infamous expensive tastes, he has also starred in some great movies that have gotten overlooked. These films include some dramedies of the early 2000s, such as Matchstick Men, The Weather Man and Lord of War. 2005’s Lord of War came from writer and director Andrew Niccol, who had previously penned the Jim Carrey movie The Truman Show and told the story of Yuri Orlov, played by Nicolas Cage, who became a gun runner and quickly rose to become a wealthy and notorious illegal arms dealer of worldwide conflicts.
Variety has revealed that a planned sequel from Niccol is now set to start filming in Morocco locations next March. The sequel’s producer, Karim Debbagh of Kasbah Films, has expressed his zeal to start production now that the writers’ and...

Nicolas Cage and writer/director Andrew Niccol are returning for Lord Of War 2, which is going to start filming later than originally planned.
It came as something of a surprise earlier this year when it was announced that the excellent 2005 movie Lord Of War, from writer/director Andrew Niccol, was in line for a sequel.
If you’ve not seen the terrific original, it stars Nicolas Cage and – yes – Jared Leto, and for a start boasts one of the best opening credits sequences of that decade. It follows a rogue arms trader, where inevitably things go awry. And the $50m-ish production returned some $72m in cinema takings.
Over time, though, its reputation has grown, and thus the sequel news perhaps shouldn’t have been the surprise it was.
Nicolas Cage will be reprising the role of Yuri Orlov in whatever Lord Of War 2 ends up being called. Bill Skarsgard is also on board.

Peter Chernin’s North Road Company has hired Amy Israel in the role of president of television.
Israel was most recently the head of scripted for Showtime, though it was announced in September she would be stepping down from that role by year’s end. In her new role, Israel will oversee all of North Road’s scripted television development and production. The role reunites her with fellow Showtime alum David Nevins, who currently serves as North Road’s CEO and to whom Israel will report.
“Amy is among the best in the business, the driving force behind a long list of the most impactful shows in our time,” Nevins said. “I know first-hand the value of her unique combination of creative leadership and producorial drive, and I am fully confident she will make a fantastic addition to North Road’s leadership and the ongoing expansion of our industry-leading content portfolio.

Every year, dozens of science-fiction films hit theaters but only a few feature enough intelligence and power to leave a mark. The best ones challenge our minds with captivating ideas and cause us to rethink the world and our place in it. Think Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," or John Carpenter's "The Thing," all drastically different tales with unique perspectives on the universe. Or, for a little more fun, hit up Spielberg's "E.T.," George Lucas' "Star Wars," or Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," then explore the darker nature of life with Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca."
The point is that science fiction caters to all crowds—even those needing a good twist. Luckily, the genre features several pictures designed to make heads explode with stunning third-hour revelations. Often, these plot...

I remember going to the movie theater in 1998 to see “The Truman Show” for the first time and being blown away. It was the scariest non-horror film I’d ever seen up to that point (and maybe still), showing us a world of utter consumerism and commodification and its horrific impact on a man who didn’t know he was born to literally be a reality show. It seemed inconceivable that something like what happens to Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) could really occur. This was, after all, the era before we started carrying around smartphones and mini computers in our pocket, before anything called Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and years before even MySpace came into being – and before we were all deputized as amateur filmmakers thanks to the still camera and video we keep with us and use to publish sometimes hourly.

25 years ago, The Truman Show star Jim Carrey proved to the world that he was somehow even more than just a generational comedic talent. Combined with the Oscar-nominated screenplay of Andrew Niccol and the direction of honorary Oscar winner Peter Weir, Carrey showcased his gifted dramatic chops by way of Truman Burbank, the unknowing star of the world’s most popular reality television show. On day 10,909 of his life’s 24/7 broadcast, Truman gradually begins to recognize that there’s something off about his seemingly idyllic existence on Seahaven Island, which, unbeknownst to him, is actually the world’s largest soundstage in Burbank.
Niccol originally wrote The Truman Show before his 1997 debut as writer-director of the cult hit, Gattaca, and so he considers both pieces to be companions in a way. After all, Truman is about a man’s discovery that the world around him is fictitious, while Gattaca is about...

Showtime has passed on developing a previously announced live-action episodic TV series based on writer/director Andrew Niccol's 1997 ‘dystopian’ sci-fi thriller, “Gattaca”:
‘…a future society is driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. ‘Vincent Freeman’ conceived outside the eugenics program struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of going into space…”
The film draws on concerns over reproductive technologies that facilitate eugenics, and the possible consequences of such technological developments for society. It also explores the idea of destiny and the ways in which it can and does govern lives. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world and who they are destined to be according to their genes.

Update: Three months after the Gattaca reboot TV series was first announced comes the news that the project has been scrapped by Showtime. In addition to the Gattaca series, Showtime also axed Seasoned, a comedy inspired by the lives of real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, as well as Sweetness and Split, two projects that had been in development. Gattaca will have the opportunity to be shopped elsewhere, so it’s possible we may still see the reboot series.

Chris McCarthy continues to slim down Showtime’s content pipeline.

Also getting the pass are two projects that had been in development — Split and Sweetness.

There’s a little moment in The Truman Show which I think about a lot. Truman and his college pals are at a ‘50s-style dance in their tuxes, twisting to a twangy, yee-haw version of T Rex’s ‘20th Century Boy’ which sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records. It is, as a guy who’s very much not Marc Bolan sings, just like rock ‘n’ roll.
But it only clicked the second time I watched the film that it was a snapshot of the weirdness which bubbles underneath the surface of The Truman Show. Jim Carrey’s Truman couldn’t possibly be exposed to actual rock ‘n’ roll in case it fired up a spirit of rebellion and mistrust of authority. The shadowy forces behind his life-as-entertainment couldn’t possibly risk their asset becoming a fan of the Beatles and deciding to turn off his mind, relax and float downstream,...

S1M0NE.Recently my MacBook showed signs of malfunction that I feared were fatal. I rushed to the Apple Store, where I was promptly introduced to Isaac, Apple's in-store virtual assistant—that is, a handheld device—to sign off on what was apparently a very standard procedure. Fifteen minutes and three Geniuses later, I was informed that numerous attempts had been made to restore my MacBook to its factory settings, all of which had inexplicably failed. “It just didn’t want to die,” said one of the Geniuses, directing me toward the newer models available for purchase. “It must have loved being yours.” I walked home in a state of devastation—and surprise at my devastation, too. At my desk I unboxed the machine, which I knew was in many ways identical to my former MacBook but for now felt uncanny. Powering up the screen, I was reminded...

Given how far reality television has come in the last 25 years, it’s hard not to think about how director Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show prophesized the TV format’s commercial prosperity. Nowadays, cameras are ubiquitous and with the prevalence of social media platforms and everyone’s persistently online existence, ordinary citizens can feel like the star of their own show broadcast publicly 24/7.
The Truman Show deserves at least some credit, some might even say blame, for ushering in the addictive spectacle of watching people’s lives unfold in real-time, day after day, as a popular form of 21st century entertainment. The big difference, of course, is that most reality show and social media stars are willing participants in their recorded stories.
But in the days before “Survivor” and “Big Brother” and the entire reality genre were omnipresent, how did The Truman Show itself become a reality?

Clearly not content with already gearing up a sequel to his 2005 Nicolas Cage-starring Lord Of War (with Cage back and Bill Skarsgård. joining the fun), writer/director Andrew Niccol is setting up another film. And he has quite the cast aboard, nabbing a pack of New Zealand talents including Melanie Lynskey, Karl Urban, Jemaine Clement and Thomasin McKenzie ready for I, Object.
With Niccol writing and directing, the film follows 10-year-old Tom, who’s grieving the loss of his father and, unable to relate to the people in his life, takes refuge in the everyday objects around him. Drinks can lids, suitcases and untold numbers of everyday objects reveal their true faces and speak to Tom, helping him on his healing journey.
It all sounds quite Pixar in nature, but we're expecting Niccol to give it a twist. It'll also be a blend of live-action and CG, so not a straight animated adventure.

"Lord of War" is one of Nicolas Cage's best movies, but not one that is usually brought up in a conversation about his work. After all, he doesn't give a deranged, larger-than-life performance like in "Face/Off," and the story isn't over-the-top or even based on a very known figure, like "Renfield." Instead, it is a drama from 2005 written and directed by "The Truman Show" writer Andrew Niccol.
The film follows Cage as an illegal arms dealer who works around the world, selling weapons regardless of what atrocities are committed, usually to both sides of a conflict. Of course, he eventually gets way in over his head and becomes the target of the very people he sells weapons to. The film also starred Ethan Hawke, Ian Holm, Jared Leto, and Bridge Moynahan. It got decent reviews and was a relative commercial success, but "Lord of War" is definitely not the...

Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are set to play Father and Son arms dealers in Andrew Niccol’s ‘Lord of War’ sequel.
Following on from the 2005 crime thriller, Cage will reprise his role as morally compromised arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Skarsgård will play his son who is said to be a chip off the old block.
The sequel finds Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, as he discovers that he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who is trying to top his dad. Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This triggers an intergenerational bitter rivalry, one that pits father and son against each other.

Following on from his run of high concept scripts (and writing/directing gigs), Andrew Niccol made 2005's Lord Of War, which starred Nicolas Cage as arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Despite it failing to set the box office alight, it is getting a belated sequel, called Lords Of War, which will see Cage return and also feature Bill Skarsgård.
In the original, Cage played Yuri Orlov, tracked from his early days in the 1980s in Little Odessa, selling guns to mobsters in his local neighborhood, through to his ascension through the decade of excess and indulgence into the early 1990s, where he forms a business partnership with an African warlord and his psychotic son.
Then there’s his relationship through the years with his younger brother (Jared Leto), his marriage to a famous model (Bridget Moynahan), his relentless pursuit by a determined Interpol Agent (Ethan Hawke) and his inner demons that...

Andrew Niccol’s 2005 film, “Lord of War,” is the epitome of a decent film. The box office was fine, but not great. And the reviews were mixed but leaning towards good. All that to say, it is a perfectly adequate film. Well, in this world of sequels, reboots, and franchise fever, it was only a matter of time before Niccol had a chance to go back to the well for a new film in this budding franchise, “Lords of War.”

Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are teaming up for Lords of War, with Vendome Pictures producing. Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Showtime is currently developing a live-action episodic TV series based on writer/director Andrew Niccol's 1997 ‘dystopian’ sci-fi thriller, “Gattaca”:
The film's title is based on the letters ‘G’, ‘A’, ‘T’ and ‘C’ which stand for guanine,...

From Willow to Fatal Attraction, all kinds of movies are being turned into television shows on the various streaming services, and we’ve learned that “Gattaca” is next up on the menu.
THR reports that the dystopian thriller from 1997 – which received an Oscar nomination for “Best Art Direction-Set Decoration” – is being turned into a series over at Showtime.
Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa (“Homeland”) are teaming with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) on the series adaptation of the 1990s movie, THR notes in their report.
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman starred in the 1997 movie, which was “set in a not-too-distant future where eugenics is common and genetic discrimination is illegal.”
Andrew Niccol wrote and directed Gattaca, which also starred Jude Law. The film wasn’t a big success in theaters, grossing just $12.5 million against a $36 million budget.
As we recently learned, Showtime will soon be folded into Paramount+.

Andrew Niccol‘s 1997 directorial debut “Gattaca” is low-key one of the best sci-fi films of the ’90s. Now, Variety reports that Showtime will test the movie’s cultural cache as it has a series adaptation in development. Is that a good idea or another telling sign that the TV industry suffers from a dearth of original ideas? Too soon to tell there.

14 years ago, we learned that Denis Leary's Apostle production company was developing a television series based on Andrew Niccol's sci-fi drama "Gattaca." It was a vague announcement buried in a story about the conclusion of Leary's FX show "Rescue Me." There wasn't so much as a logline. All we knew was that Gil Grant, a relentlessly mainstream TV writer best known for working on "24" and "NCIS," had been placed in charge of developing this cerebral property for Apostle. Nothing ever came of it, and we all forgot it was ever a thing — until today.

Written by Gordon, Gansa and Craig Borten, the series takes place a generation after the events of the film, when science and humanity have evolved to the point where we can direct our own evolution. Genetic engineering has created a world in which parents can determine the future of their children before they are born (the Valids), which by default has created a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the color of one’s skin (the Invalids).

A series adaptation of “Gattaca” is in development at Showtime, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details on the series are still under wraps, but sources say that Alex Gansa is attached to serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon also executive producing. They co-created the show with Craig Borten, who also executive produces. Sony Pictures Television will produce, with Gansa and Gordon currently under an overall deal at independent studio. Sources stress that deals for the project are not yet closed.
Showtime and Sony declined to comment.
This is not the first time that a series adaptation of “Gattaca” has been attempted. In 2009, it was reported that Sony Pictures Television was developing their own police procedural version of the film, though that project ultimately did not go forward.

Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa may be heading back to Showtime.
The Sony Pictures TV-based duo is teaming with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) to develop an adaptation of the 1997 dystopian movie Gattaca for the premium cable network. Sources say the project is being eyed with a sizable commitment at the Paramount Global-backed cabler and marks the first new project to be developed since Chris McCarthy added oversight of Showtime to his purview.
Reps for Showtime and Sony TV declined to comment, as deals have yet to close.
The movie starred Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and was set in a not-too-distant future where eugenics is common and genetic discrimination is illegal. Andrew Niccol wrote and directed the movie, which was produced by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Gail Lyon produced the pic.
