The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is about much more than a man who drew remarkable portraits of cats. According to the movie’s star, Benedict Cumberbatch, the Amazon Studios project is about an artist in Victorian London who pursues many subjects with passion: boxing, painting, composing an opera and theorizing about the mechanical workings of the world, including the mysteries of electricity.
“He felt this thing all his life about electricity,” Cumberbatch said on the panel for the movie at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event Sunday. But “the real electricity is love,” continued the actor. “That’s the flow, that’s the course that runs through his entire life. And, of course, it’s all from Emily.”
Emily is the love of Wain’s life, played by Emmy winner Claire Foy. When first they meet in the film, she...

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on a curious nickname in the trailer for his latest film: the “Cat Man.” And there are a lot of kitties to go around in this first look at “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.”
Will Sharpe’s tongue-in-cheek biographical film tells the story of British artist Louis Wain, who rose to fame for his countless paintings of cats that were as colorful and cloyingly cutesy as you might expect. His work hasn’t exactly stood the test of time, but the film explores how Wain was a troubled soul with a fascination for the mysteries of the world. And over time, you could say he even became something of an “expert” when it came to cats.
“They will turn blue and communicate with us in our own language,” Cumberbatch says in the trailer. “Did you say that they would turn blue… wow,” a character played by Claire Foy responds.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of eccentric Edwardian artist famed for his cute cats is brimful of star cameos but gets lost in mannered performances
Here is a sentimental biopic that buries you in a fusillade of quirks and tics and flicks, an overegged pudding of a film with producer-star Benedict Cumberbatch once again going into Sherlock Turing mode. He plays eccentric Edwardian artist and illustrator Louis Wain, a lively and arguably brilliant man who might today be considered neurodiverse, and who certainly suffered from depression. But for all his gifts, Wain finally became famous for just one thing: his hugely successful cute drawings of cats in jokey poses for the Illustrated London News. In Britain – and the US, where he was also popular – Wain could claim to have reinvented the cat as a lovable domestic familiar, the feline version of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. But Wain was stricken with...

Why is it that, when a horror film achieves something special, both the critics and the public tend to elevate it above and beyond the ‘lowly’ horror genre? David Lynch’s most humane and sympathetic film still makes our heads spin, and this new 4K remaster renders Freddie Francis’s great cinematography at its best. Lynch extends and develops the visual nightmares of his experimental Eraserhead for this true-life classic. Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller and Freddie Jones all give indelible, emotionally-moving performances. How many horror pictures hold up hope for social decency and personal dignity?

Written by Stephen Brady (1.05), Simon Donald (1.06, 1.07)

Holy crap, what the hell just happened?!? After weeks toying with the audience, teasing then backing away from genre elements and using the visual language of horror, sci-fi, and creature features, Fortitude commits in a big way with the viscerally disturbing climax of “Episode Seven”. Shirley’s attack of her mother is telegraphed somewhat, but that does nothing to prepare audiences for the intensity and transfixing horror of her actions, or her lack of remorse afterwards. It would seem Shirley doesn’t live there any more, hollowed out to make room for whatever spewed what looks to this critic like a clutch of eggs into Shirley’s mother’s (still living, let us not forget) body. From the atmospheric, tense scoring by Ben Frost to the detached,...

Previously: Review: 'Downton Abbey' Season 5, Episode 7 Lets Things Get Serious Upstairs Despite her tragic death last week, we're still treated to that iconic shot of Isis' backside in the opening credits. Too soon, "Downton." Too soon. We open with Rose trying on her trousseau and reminding everyone to pretend that her parents are happily married instead of on the verge of divorce. Everyone except her mother, the hideous Susan, goes along with this. All through this season, we've been reminded of how dreadful Robert is, but his brand of affable disinterest is nothing compared to Susan's martyred, passive aggressive bitterness. Phoebe Nicholls turns in an excellent performance, and hopefully "Downton" will give her career the boost she clearly deserves, because no one with a soul could watch Susan's clumsy machinations and not want to give her a good slap. She tries to frame Atticus -- whose real name turns out to be Ephraim,...

Tom Sturridge pushed his almost 1-year-old daughter, Marlowe, in her stroller for a walk around the West Village neighborhood of NYC with his fiancée, Sienna Miller, and his mom, Phoebe Nicholls, yesterday. Sienna and Marlowe also spent a bit of one-on-one time earlier in the day sporting matching hairdos. Tom is winding down from a big weekend at Sunday's Tony Awards, where he was a nominee for best actor in a play for Orphans. Although he ultimately lost out on the honor, Tom had the support of Burberry-clad Sienna and his mom on the red carpet. In addition to being recognized among his Broadway peers over the weekend, Tom is prepping for another special occasion. On Sunday, he'll celebrate his first Father's Day. We caught up with Sienna last week at her Just Like a Woman premiere in NYC, where she gave some insight as to what her fiancé has to expect.

Sienna Miller made the most of her Saturday afternoon with a family flea market trip in NYC. She kept her baby daughter, Marlowe, strapped to her chest while walking and chatting with Tom Sturridge's mom, Phoebe Nicholls. Sienna and Marlowe made an adorable pair as they browsed the racks, and at one point, Sienna stopped to try on a flower crown. Sienna's family shopping day comes on the heels of a big night for her fiancé - the couple will be heading to the Tony Awards on Sunday. Tom is nominated for best actor in a play for his work in this year's Orphans and is going up against Broadway bigwigs like Tom Hanks and Nathan Lane. Win or lose, the new dad will have lots to be excited about as he celebrates his first Father's Day. Sienna let us know her sweet plans for the occasion when we...

As the ITV1 continuity announcer said: "Your ITV Christmas wouldn't be complete without a trip to Downton Abbey." Leaving aside the queasy thought of an "ITV Christmas", it's the idea of completion that's key here. One of the greatest things about film festivals, something that can even get you through the worst films, the lack of sleep, and the terrible B.O. of your fellow moviegoers, is the chance to discover new talent. You'll see absolute newcomers blast off into the stratosphere, or relatively well-known faces suddenly show off what they've always been capable of, and it's never less than a thrill.
And this year's Cannes Film Festival was no exception. With the festival now in the rear-view mirror, we've picked out five major talents who broke out at this year's festival, and whom we're certain we'll be hearing more from in the years to come. Check them out below, and if you were in Cannes, feel free to weigh in with your own suggestions too.

Tom Sturridge may fit right in the midst of his generation of dark-haired, handsome British actors, but he refuses to consider his colleagues as competition. "If a film is being made by an intelligent director, they're going to cast the right guy," says Sturridge. "I shouldn't be right for every role, because I'm not." Indeed, the actor says he thoroughly enjoyed himself during a two-year gap between roles. And he won't plot and struggle for his next role. "You can construct something and make decisions and do film after film to try and get to this place, and never get there," he says. "And you can do nothing, and then get a phone call randomly saying X has just seen you do an interview on the Internet and thinks you'd be perfect for this film, and suddenly you're in Brazil shooting the best film ever made. All of it is circumstance.

Michael Martin's profile of Tom Sturridge is a perfect introduction to the young British actor:
