Idris Elba gives a powerful central performance in a biopic that treads respectfully while not shying from the uglier truths of the Anc's fight against apartheid
Justin Chadwick's decent, respectful and respectable account of Nelson Mandela's life is vigorously scripted by William Nicholson, and intelligently acted by Idris Elba and Naomie Harris; it appears by a remarkable stroke of fate at almost at the same historical moment as Mandela's death, an event for which the western media had long prepared the shooting script of their own response. The memorial event was naturally expected to be as calm and uplifting as an Olympic ceremony, just the sort of moment which in movie terms would furnish the opening scene, and from which the main drama would then unfold in flashback. In fact, of course, the event was disconcertingly chaotic and even faintly surreal, with press and media unsure quite...

Director: Justin Chadwick; Screenwriter William Nicholson; Starring: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Jamie Bartlett, Terry Pheto; Running time: 139 mins; Certificate: 12A
A film that tells a remarkable story is not necessarily the same thing as a remarkable film, and Justin Chadwick's solidly crafted chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life falls very respectably into the former category. Watching the extraordinary facts of Nelson Mandela's life played out on screen will always be fascinating, and the conventional approach taken here is understandable if ultimately disappointing - you can sense at every turn the filmmakers' reluctance to risk overshadowing their subject.
Despite being adapted from Mandela's autobiography, which gives the film its subtitle, William Nicholson's screenplay is almost entirely devoid of psychological introspection, leaving Idris Elba to give a charismatic and physically nuanced performance that still feels emotionally undernourished.

When Steve McQueen's unflinching, unforgettable deep south slavery epic premiered at Telluride and Toronto in September, pundits identified it immediately as the likely big victor at March's Oscars. Despite young pretenders Gravity and plucky upstart American Hustle, that still looks likely to be the case. This is a film that's impossible to ignore, a challenge not to be moved by.

The Weinstein Company has acquired all North American, Australian and New Zealand distribution rights to the Nelson Mandela biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." The film stars Idris Elba ("Prometheus," "The Wire") in the title role of the former South African president and anti-apartheid revolutionary, and Naomie Harris ("Skyfall") as Mandela's wife of 39 years, Winnie. Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto co-star. The film is based on Mandela's autobiography of the same title, and is directed by Justin Chadwick ("The First Grader," "The Other Boleyn Girl"). Producer Anant Singh started communications with Mandela about a film based on his life while he was still in prison, and acquired film rights to the book at the time of its 1996 publication. The long-gestating project eventually signed Oscar nominee William Nicholson ("Les...

Les Miserables
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Isabelle Allen, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Colm Wilkinson | Written by Victor Hugo, William Nicholson | Directed by Tom Hooper
Victor Hugo’s epic novel Les Miserables is no stranger to big screen adaptations, with close to fifty different versions in various languages, but Tom Hooper’s version, (Oscar winning director of The King’s Speech) the first to adapt the stage musical, is possibly the grandest and most ambitious to date. The tale of Jean Valjean provides the plot for the longest running musical in the West End, and it took 27 years for someone to bring give it the cinematic treatment it so clearly deserves.
The story begins as Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released on parole after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, and trying to escape. However he breaks parole, in attempt to make a better life for himself,...

From about the age of ten, I have been inexplicably fascinated with the Academy Awards. If pressed to explain the foundation of this obsession with an awards show from what is ultimately just an arbitrary body of members with vastly varying tastes across the many different disciplines it requires to put a competent movie up on the silver screen, I’m not sure I could muster up a satisfactory response.
I suspect at the time my Oscar obsession grew from what seemed like the perfect marriage between the art of cinema and the competition of sports, but even now, these many years later, after hours of voluntary studying of countless Oscar books (to the point where I can name every Best Picture winner chronologically from memory), I still can’t explain it in any way that doesn’t make me sound like some freakish Oscar junkie. Nevertheless, between the Oscar season and the NFL playoffs,...

This Thursday, January 10, the 2013 Oscar nominations will be announced by the show's host, Seth MacFarlane, and Emma Stone at 5:30 a.m. Pt and I need to do a little finalizing when it comes to my predictions before then and today I'm starting with the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay categories as I hadn't updated either for quite some time and some shuffling needed to be done. At the end of last week the Writers Guild announced their nominees for the 2013 Writers Guild Awards and while several Oscar contending screenplays were ineligible for a variety of reasons, the nominations did give a few screenplays a little added attention. Screenplays such as those for Moonrise Kingdom, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looper and even Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master got a little needed attention as it has been fading in the polls as of late. Angelina Jolie has chosen her next directing project, following her 2011 debut "In The Land of Blood and Honey." The actress-director will direct "Unbroken" for Universal and Walden Media. In development for over half a century, the story follows that of Louis Zamperini, a 1936 Olympian runner who became a prisoner of war during WWII. After enlisting, he was captured by the Japanese when his plane went down in 1942; he and another crew mate survived on a raft for 47 days before being captured. Zamperini is now 96. Jolie will oversee the final draft of the script, which is being penned by William Nicholson ("Les MIserables"). Jolie states; “I read Laura Hillenbrand’s brilliant book, and I was so moved by Louie Zamperini’s heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make this film. Louie is a true hero and a man of immense humanity, faith and courage. I am...

Les Miserables Directed by: Tom Hooper Written by: William Nicholson (screenplay), Victor Hugo (novel) Starring: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) ambitious, sweeping epic adaptation of the musical Les Miserables hits full force on all cylinders during the first half, ensuring that it will garner a plethora of Academy Award nominations. However, an unfortunate and disappointing second half sends the film careening off course, and left me scratching my head over what exactly went wrong. Les Miserables (based on the French novel by Victor Hugo) has so successfully ingratiated itself into the world of pop culture that chances are you know the story of Jean Valjean and his lifelong quest to elude the clutches of police inspector Javert, even if you have never read the book or seen a performance. There have been multiple film...

Angelina Jolie has really become a working woman: actress, humanitarian, mother, Un Ambassador (is that still going on?) and, since In The Land Of Blood And Honey, director. Makes me feel like I don’t work hard enough. Now Jolie is set to helm her next directorial project, in the form of Unbroken, an adaptation of a non-fiction book by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand.
The film will follow the true story of Olympic athlete and World War II Pow Louis Zamperini, an American track star who competed in the 1936 Olympics and then served in World War II. When his plane was shot down, he survived with two other compatriots on a raft for 47 days. They reached the Marshall Islands, where Zamperini and the other sole survivor were held captive in a Japanese Pow camp until the end of the war, three years later. But Zamperini did not quite bear a grudge,...

Angelina Jolie is unstoppable. Right after her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey, comes the word that she’s attached to direct Unbroken, an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand‘s book titled Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.
Described as an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, and a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body & spirit, Hillenbrand’s book is actually a story of Lou Zamperini, man who competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and went on to fight in WWII as an Air Force bombardier.
Along with two other crewmen Zamperini survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner of war camp.

The transformation of the beloved Broadway musical, .Les Miserables,. into a big screen event is a daunting task. The filmmakers must satisfy the fans of the stage play and convince the non-believers. I can tell you now that the film adaptation stays true and improves on the Broadway production.
Like many fans, I have seen the Broadway play numerous times, yet I have not felt the story.s full impact until after I saw the movie version. What was once seemingly inferred on stage becomes highlighted on the big screen. The epilogue becomes much richer.
Big credit goes to Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (.The King.s Speech.) who made two important decisions for the film version. First, the movie is entirely sung-through which gives the adaptation an operatic feel. Second, the actors are encouraged to sing live-to-film to add passion to their singing style. The result is a true spectacle...

January 3 marks the day that Writers Guild nominations will be announced--and Academy ballots are due. It's not surprising that scruffy indie "Beasts of the Southern Wild" should be left off the Writers Guild ballot. The WGA always leaves off films that were deemed ineligible, often foreign ("A Separation"), indie ("Pulp Fiction") or animated players ("Up") who either aren't guild signatories or didn't pony up to get qualified. But for Working Title not to qualify William Nicholson's script for big-budget "Les Miserables" is more surprising. (The production is not a signatory to the guild.) In this case Writers Guild cred could be crucial to an eventual adapted screenplay nomination, because the movie is perceived as a version of the stage musical that is all sung. The painstaking changes and adaptations that made the movie possible could use some attention. "The Artist" and "The King's...

Les Miserables opens this month, so we better hurry up with our updates! Today we have four new featurettes, one new poster, and a completely new TV spot for Tom Hooper‘s musical epic, and I’m sure you’re going to enjoy. So, yes, this is definitely worth your full attention!
Hooper directed the movie from a script written by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer. The whole thing is, of course, based on Victor Hugo‘s epic tale of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption.

If there’s one thing that the movie industry loves (besides money, of course), it’s a good David vs. Goliath story. Each year, as the Oscars race heats up, there’s always a focus on whether independent movies in contention can take the prizes from big studio films.
Over the past decade or so, the tide has turned toward indie flicks more than was historically the norm. Recently, though, a situation has developed in which studios are trying harder to get back in the game but sometimes lag behind their smaller competition. This year proves an especially interesting case, since in most of the categories it looks like studio offerings will have a good chance to best the indies.

It had been a while since I last offered a full-fledged Oscar prediction update and in the time between I have seen Flight, Wreck-It Ralph, Lincoln and Hitchcock. So yesterday I went through the current standings and the only topline category I didn't change was Best Supporting Actress where the race is really going to come down to what kind of performance Anne Hathaway gives in Les Miserables. There is a chance Samantha Barks or even Amanda Seyfried may be able to make a case coming out of Les Mis and I'm not going to count Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) out entirely or Frances McDormand (Promised Land), though those all seem like longshots compared to what I've seen so far and the reactions to those performances. That said, what I've put together below is a list of the standings as I see them right now with a few comments where I felt necessary.

Daniel Day-Lewis in LincolnPhoto: Dreamworks Pictures Well, one of the major unknown features of the awards season has been seen and the response is largely positive in many of the right places. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln screened last night as the not-so-surprise screening at the New York Film Festival and plenty of praise has been placed on the film, Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role and lots of love for Tommy Lee Jones who is said to "steal the picture". It should be mentioned the film was said to be an unfinished cut so some trimming may still take place (though it has already been rated PG-13 by the MPAA so changes seem unlikely), but reactions had folks referring to it as a "rock solid monument to Abe", "heavy and heady" and "the best film Roberto Rossellini never made. Also one of the best Spielberg did make." Tony Kushner's...

These are two categories I always have a hard time with considering I don't read scripts before seeing a movie, wanting to go into each and every one of them knowing as little as possible, and I rarely read them after the fact. So what am I basing my opinion on? Gut instinct, buzz around the net, history and anything I can possibly glean from watching the films themselves. To be honest, I don't think the voters are doing anything all that different. While studios do tend to make virtually every single screenplay up for consideration available to read (which I will make available again this year as I have in previous years), I don't read many of them, though I will browse through them on occasion as I did with the screenplay for Martha Marcy May Marlene last year, which drummed up a healthy amount of conversation. I wonder,...

After interviewing a number of experienced candidates for the job, the West Brom owners last week hired former Liverpool number two Steve Clarke to fill the managerial vacancy at the Hawthorns. The Baggies job will be his first as manager of a football team.
Here’s five reasons why his appointment is a huge gamble;
1. Curse of the Number 2
Steve McLaren, Carlos Queiroz, Ray Harford, Les Reed, Sammy Lee, Tony Adams, Terry O’Connor…the list of assistant managers who have failed in the top job could fill every page of a newspaper. The list of successes – including Bob Paisley, Bill Nicholson, Roberto Di Matteo (arguably) – is much shorter, but, importantly, all of them were promoted internally.
Steve Clarke is not only stepping into the manager’s shoes for the first time, but he is also moving to a new club. Roy Hodgson did a steady if unspectacular job at West Brom,...

Everyone looks great in their roles, it will be interesting to see how well they do when it comes to singing. I'm a fan of the story and musical, and I hope this movie does it justice.

We've already seen a few photos from the set of Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. But today Hugh Jackman tweeted out an official photo of himself as Jean Valjean. My dad did a lot of musical theater productions while I was growing up, so I know this musical extremely well. I'm a big fan of it, and I hope everyone involved does it justice on the big screen.

We recently showed you a photo of Hugh Jackman from the set of Tom Hooper's big screen musical adaptation of Les Miserables. Today we give you your first look at Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert, and he looks exactly how I imagined he would in the role. I'm seriously curious to see how all of these actors do with the musical numbers.

Here's our first look at Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in full costume from the set of director Tom Hooper's (Kings Speech) big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Les Miserables. He looks like he going through hell. They must be filming scenes from early on in the story when Valjean is in prison.
The story follows Jean Valjean (Jackman), who is on the run from his nemesis, Inspector Javert, played by Russell Crowe. The film also stars Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, and Samantha Barks.
The script for the film was written by William Nicholson, and yes, this will be the musical version. The musical's original producer, Cameron Mackintosh, is producing the film as well. The original score by composer Claude-Michel Schoenberg will be used for the film, and he even has has written a new song for Jackman to sing in the movie.

Los Angeles (AP) — Dogs seem to be as popular on a canvas these days as they are on a leash, with paintings of dogs drawing big bucks and big crowds.
At the annual "dogs only" art auction held after the Westminster Dog Show, two price records were broken this year, said Alan Fausel, vice president and director of fine art at Bonhams, the auction house that runs the event.
"Dejeuner," a painting that shows dogs and cats eating from a large dish, set a record for the artist, William Henry Hamilton Trood (1860-1899), when it sold for $194,500, Fausel said. That record was broken an hour later when Trood's "Hounds in a Kennel," showing a half-dozen dogs staring at a bird outside their cage, sold for $212,500.
Bonhams' Dogs in Show & Field auction is the only one in the country devoted solely to dogs. It was the best auction in years, Fausel said,...
